2 Questions I Get Asked Every Fall and Winter, with Plain-English Answers Q: Is it cheaper to keep the house at a constant temperature or lower the temperature and the system has to catch up to a desired temperature? A: Anytime you make the inside temperature closer to the outside temperature you save energy. If you lower the inside temperature to 62 you lose heat at a slower rate because the temperature difference between the inside and outside is not as big. You will not burn any extra energy to catch the house back up to 72. Q: What about just cycling off my heating system so many minutes every hour? A: You will definitely save energy because a furnace or boiler that is off uses no energy. It may cause a comfort issue, but you can t beat zero energy usage. Q: If I set the thermostat up to 90, will it heat my house up faster after setting back? A: No it doesn t heat up any faster. You may feel it is faster like driving at 90 mph, but it doesn t work that way when heating your home. Q: Is it cheaper to heat with natural gas or electricity? A: Natural gas is cheaper at current rates. If you have a heat pump with a gas furnace backup, it is cheaper to turn the emergency heat switch on (a better name is backup heat ); this will lock out the heat pump. But if you only want to heat one room, a portable electric heater may be cheaper to use than a gas furnace heating the whole home. Q: Is hot water heat (i.e. radiators, convectors and heated floors) cheaper to heat a home with or forced air heating? A: That is strictly a comfort question because the heat loss on a home s structure is the same regardless of how it is heated. For the best comfort, use radiators, convectors and heated floors. 3 The Final Countdown You ve been limping along all summer with your older R22 air conditioner, hoping to avoid replacing it even though you know it has a refrigerant leak. So, you have an AC technician out to fill it up with R22 refrigerant, but the cost is shocking, and you re angry. It didn t cost that much last year, so what s the deal? Homeowners and HVAC companies are at the mercy of the rising R22 refrigerant prices. R22 is depleting our ozone layer, making our hot summers even hotter. Because of that, the EPA has prohibited further manufacture of R22 after January 1, 2020, and because the EPA has mandated that less be produced each year until then, the price for R22 has risen 500% already. It will keep going up. If your AC system was manufactured prior to 2010, it probably uses R22 refrigerant, so you should not spend any money to repair it. If you are unsure if your AC system uses R22, we will check it free of charge for you. 4 Determining When to Retire Your Furnace Now may be the time to replace your furnace with a high efficiency system. There are many factors to consider when thinking about replacing your older furnace system. 1. Has your furnace reached retirement age? Furnaces last an average of years, depending on whether they have been professionally maintained or not. Age isn t everything, though. The cost to keep the furnace running will give you additional concrete reasons to consider replacing vs. repairing. 2. Increased cost and frequency of furnace repairs Like an old car, an old furnace that requires costly repairs is signaling that it s near the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced soon. The question then is, How expensive does a furnace repair need to be before it s not worth it? Even for less expensive repairs, depending upon how old your furnace is, you should consider replacement vs. repair. 3. Your heating bills have risen dramatically over the years Even if your furnace has a few years left in it, it may not be cost efficient to keep it if your energy bills during the heating season are high due to the furnace s poor efficiency. A new law is expected to provide significant savings for homeowners by cutting the electricity consumption of furnace fans. After July 3, 2019, residential furnace manufacturers must include energy-efficient electronically commutated motors (ECM s) on their furnace fans, which are expected to save homeowners billions of dollars on electricity bills, and reduce carbon pollution. ECM motors will also keep occupants more comfortable, too. First, they provide more efficient airflow. Second, they reduce temperature swings in the home by allowing the fan to run for a longer time at a reduced speed. You need to assess how much it s costing you just to keep the current furnace you have versus how much you ll save on a new furnace. The Energy.gov AFUE chart can do just that, and we will help you decrypt it. 4. Weigh the factors together As you can see, none of these factors (age, cost to repair, energy efficiency) alone can tell you if you need to replace your furnace. They should be weighed together. 13 A Pinch of Maintenance Prevents a Pound of Problems Maintaining your equipment prevents future problems and unwanted costs. Keep your heating and cooling system at peak performance by contacting us to perform a seasonal check-up. Heating tune-ups are performed between September 1 and February 28, and cooling tune-ups between March 1 and August 31. It really doesn t matter when during each of these two seasons that you plan your tune-up. What matters is getting it done. We recommend you plan your seasonal maintenance around the same time annually to make it easier to remember.
