1 SAFETY 1.1 Safety precautions Danger! Repairs should be carried out by personnel from the manufacturer s own technical department. Improper repairs may be harmful to the users. The appliance should be disconnected from the mains before being dismantled. Inside there are parts that are subjected to high voltage levels. After being repaired, VDE 0701 tests should be conducted or else the specific standard regulations of the country concerned should be observed. The main electricity cable may only be replaced by personnel from the technical department, using spare cable Safety precautions during use Danger! Connect and use the appliance only in accordance with the information supplied on the iron s specifications plate. Do not connect the appliance to the power supply in the event of there being visible signs of damage to the cord or the appliance itself. Keep the appliance beyond the reach of children. Only a resilient, steady ironing board should be used. Should the iron fall or show signs of not being watertight, it should be examined by the Official Technical Department before being used again. First unplug the electricity cable from the mains socket before filling the tank with water. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply after each use or whenever checking for defects. So as to avoid potential hazards, repairs and interventions that need to be carried out on the appliance like, for instance, replacing the cord, should only be performed by qualified personnel from the Official Technical Department. When leaving the place where the ironing is being done, disconnect the iron from the power supply by removing the cable from the mains socket. 1.2 Trouble-shooting Warning! Never attempt to carry out repairs by means of an indiscriminate exchange of component parts. Proceed in a systemmatic way and pay attention to the technical documents supplied with the appliance. The electronic plates should not be repaired, but replaced with original parts from the manufacturer. Exceptions are listed in separate documents. When conducting checks with the appliance open, avoid contact with parts that are hot or subject to tension. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 2 von 24

3 OPERATION 3.1 Components In steam generator irons, the steam is produced in an independent device from the iron called the steam generator or boiler, which is connected to the iron by means of a cord that enables electrical current and steam to be transmitted to the iron. Iron Boiler cap Steam ready LED Low water level LED Steam regulator Steam generator 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 4 von 24 ON/OFF switch

3.2 Before using the iron for the first time Remove the base protector. Carefully remove the power cable and the steam connection cord from the cable storage compartments. Only place the iron in a horizontal position on the iron rest! Connect the supply cord attachment device to the appropriate location. Hang the steam supply cord on the attachment device. Place the appliance in an appropriate location next to the ironing surface. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 5 von 24

3.3 Filling the tank and type of water to use Risk of electric shock! Take care when filling the tank with water. Remove the power cable from the plug socket. Unscrew the cap (safety device) on the appliance. Recommendation: Fill the steam tank with tap water. If you live in a hard water area, mix the tap water with distilled or demineralised water. 1:1. By filling the tank with warm water, the time needed to heat the water can be reduced. Do not use more than 1 litre of water; if more than 1 litre is used, the water may leak from the iron and cause limescale problems. 3.4 Using the steam generator iron Connect the appliance to the power supply. Move the power switch to the «I» position. The appliance will begin to generate steam and will be ready for use in 6 or 7 minutes. The indicator will light up. Separate the clothes according to their treatment symbols and always start with the clothes that are ironed at the lowest temperature o. The indicator will be lit up while the iron is heating up and will turn off as soon as the selected temperature has been reached. Once the iron is hot, it can still be used during the re-heating cycles. Warning! In order to avoid damage to the appliance, do not add perfume, vinegar, starch, softening agents, additives or any other type of chemical product to the water. Firmly screw the cap (safety device) back on the tank. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 6 von 24

3.5 Regulating the amount of steam (Depends on the specific model) The volume of steam desired for ironing can be regulated. Turning the regulator control to the left produces the minimum amount of steam and turning it to the right produces the maximum amount of steam. 3.7 Vertical ironing with steam 3.6 Steam ironing Place the temperature regulator switch in the position corresponding to the maximum temperature. Hang the garment to be ironed on a clothes hanger. Hold the iron in a vertical position in front of the garment at a distance of cm. Do not use this function near people or directly in their direction! To iron with steam, move the temperature regulator to between and max. If the temperature regulator is placed between and (the dotted section), do not use the steam for extended periods of time to avoid dripping water. Press the steam button on the iron. Release the button to stop the burst of steam. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 7 von 24

3.8 Refilling the water tank Risk of electric shock! Remove the power cable from the wall socket and leave the iron base and the appliance (steam generator) to cool. Only clean the iron base with a damp cloth. Rinse the water tank regularly with clean water. Clean the exterior of the iron and the steam generator with a damp cloth. Then rub dry with a clean cloth. Take care when filling the water tank. Warning! Risk of burns! Be very careful when opening the screw cap (safety device) on the water tank hot steam may escape. The indicator on the boiler (steam generator iron) will light up. Press the button and ensure that no steam is generated. Only then can the water tank be refilled. Place the power switch in the O position. Remove the power cable from the wall socket. Slowly open the screw cap with extreme caution. Allow any residual steam that may be present to escape. Refill with water and firmly close the screw cap on the tank (safety device). 3.9 Cleaning the appliance Risk of electric shock! Never submerge the appliance in water or clean it under the tap! Do not use abrasive or dissolvent agents when cleaning the appliance! 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 8 von 24

4.1.1 Steam drum: The purpose of the steam drum is to heat the water to steam temperature, increasing pressure at the same time to approximately 2 bars. For this purpose, a resistor is attached to the base to provide the necessary heat to heat the water that has previously been placed in the drum by the user through the drum cap Electro-valve: The electro-valve is an electro-magnetic water valve that opens passage for the steam from the drum using a coil when the user presses the steam button on the iron. In order to avoid water leaving the base of the iron in the form of droplets, the electromagnet only opens when the water temperature within the drum is correct: when the pressure thermostat in the base of the drum detects a temperature of over 145ºC. On previous models, the presostat also acted as a pressure thermostat, cutting supply to the drum when the temperature of the water is correct for the generation of steam Steam regulator (valve): This is a mechanical valve whose axis is attached to the steam regulator control. By turning this control, the user can regulate the volume of steam that travels through the cord to the iron. When turning, it mechanically opens or closes the passage of steam from the electro-valve to the cord Drum cap: The drum cap serves to close the drum once it has been filled with water and acts as a safety valve against overpressure within the drum. If, through a fault with the pressure thermostat, the resistor does not stop heating the water, the pressure may rise to over 5 bars. When this happens, the spring in the cap will give way and allow steam to escape until the pressure falls back below 5 bars. This situation should not normally arise because it is designed for the thermofuse to act first and cut power to the drum resistor ON/OFF Switch: This switch connects or disconnects electrical power to the steam generator Low water level LED: This red indicator illuminates when, due to a lack of water, the drum temperature rises rapidly and, therefore, the low water level thermostat (normally open) closes. The closure temperature is 165ºC. As soon as the user refills the drum with water, this acts as a coolant and the temperature of the drum will decrease to below 165ºC meaning the low water level thermostat will open and the LED will switch off Steam ready LED: This LED illuminates when the pressure thermostat detects a temperature of over 145ºC. At this temperature, the steam pressure within the drum is approximately 2 bars and it is considered to be at that level when the steam has the appropriate characteristics for ironing Cord: The cord is the connection component between the iron and the steam generator. Through this, electricity is passed to the iron and steam from the drum is passed to the iron base. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 11 von 24

4.1.9 Thermofuse: This is a safety device that disconnects the resistor when, in the event of a fault with the pressure thermostat, the temperature in the drum rises above 185ºC Resistor and pressure thermostat: The resistor is attached to the base of the drum and is supplied via the pressure thermostat, which disconnects the power when it detects a temperature of 145ºC. Given that the disassembly and assembly of the resistor is a laborious task and critical to transmitting and correctly detecting the heat, it is advised to replace the entire drum if a defect is discovered with the resistor. On previous models, the presostat also acted as a pressure thermostat, cutting supply to the drum when the temperature of the water is correct for the generation of steam. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 13 von 24

6 REPAIR 6.1 Measuring the temperature With all faults preventing the iron from performing its basic function (fabric stuck to the sole plate, drips trickling out of the steam vents, it doesn t reach the right temperature, etc) measuring the temperature at the geometric centre of the iron is an essential requirement for the correct diagnosis of the problem. Given how important it is to measure the temperature, one of the basic tools for repairing irons is the thermometer. A digital thermometer, available as a spare part with reference , is specially recommended for such purposes. Geometric centre (max temperature) 120 mm For this kind of measurements always use the thermometer with the temperature probe for surfaces (340961): In order to check the temperatura of the iron, turn the temperature setting to maximum. Ignore the first two cycles, in which the temperature of the sole plate will fluctuate between 180 and 185ºC. In high-powered irons (over 2200 W), it is particularly important not to exceed 185ºC at any time, since there is a danger of the thermofuse being activated due to rapid overheating. Attention! Do not use any other type of probe, such as probes for liquids! The displayed result would contain important errors. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 15 von 24

6.2 Setting the thermostat The thermostats for the irons are supplied without being set, since this operation should be done with the thermostat mounted in the steam chamber (sole plate). The easiest way to set them is as follows: 1. Mount the new thermostat on the sole plate or steam chamber. The bottom of the iron should be at ambient temperature. 2. Turn the temperature setting to max. 3. Turn on the power and check the temperature in the geometric centre of the sole plate, ignoring the first two cycles (take the temperature 5 min after plugging the iron in). 4. The cut-out temperature at maximum power ( max position on the temperature setting) should be ºC. If the temperature is correct, seal or tighten the adjusting screw. If it is not correct, re-adjust the screw and check the temperature again after 5 minutes (ignore the first regulation cycles) Attention! When setting the temperature, the bottom of the iron should be at ambient temperature. Geometric centre (maximum temperature) 120 mm 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 16 von 24

6.3 Universal screw set The most usual screws for repairs of irons can be ordered as a spare part set: This set contains following screws: 1 x TOR.AL/EST/TT/M4x6 for BIMETAL (TB11/TDA8) 2 x TOR.AL/TT/STR/M4x6. for TEMPERATURE LIMITER & THERMOFUSE (Steam Station) 1 x TOR.AL/TT/M4x27 for THERMOSTAT (TB11/TDA8, TB24, Steam Station, TDS10) 1 x TOR.AL/TT/STR/ for BIMETAL (TB24) 1 x TOR.AL/M4x8 DIN 7985 for THERMOSTAT (TB24, TB21) 1 x TOR.AL/M4x10 DIN7985 for THERMOSTAT (TB11/TDA8, Steam Station, TDS10) 2 x TOR.AL/TT/M4x7 THERMOFUSE (TB11/TDA8, TB24, Steam Station, TDS10) 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 17 von 24

7 FAULT DIAGNOSTICS 7.1 The iron does not heat up In the event of the iron not working, this may be due to any of the following reasons: The resistor is cut off In order to detect whether the resistor has been cut off, the method to follow consists of using a tester between the two contacts for the resistor so as to measure continuity. If the resistor has been cut off, change the base of the iron The thermofuse is open Despite the fact that this can be seen at a glance, since there is a gap of 1 mm, it can be checked using a tester, by applying this to the terminals of the thermofuse. If there is no continuity, the thermofuse is open and therefore the power supply to the resistor will be cut off. A solution is to change the thermofuse and the thermostat, as the thermofuse can only fail after the thermostat has failed. Attention! Never touch the old one!!! with the connection, preventing the contacts from closing and thus the iron will not be able to heat up. To check this problem, the thermostat should be closed and continuity between the terminals checked using a tester. If there is no continuity, the problem is the dirt and should be solved by cleaning the thermostat or else replacing it with a new one. 7.2 Fabric stuck to the sole plate Fabric stuck to the sole plate is a sign that the sole plate of the iron has reached a temperature that is too high for that type of cloth. When the temperature is too high, this may be due to two reasons: either the thermostat has been set wrongly or the temperature has not been selected correctly by the user. In order to check that it is due to a fault in the appliance (thermostat), measure the temperature in the geometric centre of the sole plate with the setting on max : - If the maximum temperature is between 180 and 185ºC, the iron is behaving correctly. In this case, inform the user that the clothes should be ordered according to type of fabric so that they can be ironed with different settings, as indicated on the labels. Synthetics and particularly delicate fabrics should not be ironed at high temperatures. - If the maximum temperature is above 185ºC, the thermostat should be replaced and set correctly There is dirt between the contacts It may be that with use of the iron fluff and other types of dirt will accumulate particularly around the cap of the chamber. This dirt can penetrate inside the contacts for the thermostat and cause problems In order to remove the fabric stuck to the sole plate, try to take the remains off with a cloth, when the sole plate is hot. If this is not possible, change the sole plate. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 19 von 24

7.3 Water leakage in the iron Firstly, identify where the water is leaking from: - Through the soleplate openings: In this case it is not a leak but a possible defect in the steam generation (it does not reach the temperature, condensation in the hose, etc.) - Between the plastic parts: In this case, it is a water leakage. In the majority of the cases, water leakages are due to an incorrect coupling of the hose or a faulty hose (manipulated, porous, etc.) 7.4 Water leak in the steam generator With steam generator irons, a leak in the steam generator gives rise to a pool of water beneath the generator and the main causes of this are: Defect in the cap or in its toric seal: If the spring in the safety valve does not have sufficient strength, it may cause the valve to open at lower pressures than the safety pressure (5 bars maximum), allowing steam to escape at normal pressures. The same effect is produced with a porous or defective toric seal. Cracks in the steam drum: In this case, it is necessary to replace the entire drum. Lack of Teflon on the electro-valve: When changing the electro-valve, it is important to seal the threaded joint with a strip of Teflon. If this has not been done correctly or if leaks appear over time, it is necessary to disassemble the electrovavle and replace the seal correctly. 7.5 No steam is produced Checking the steam generator Misuse by the user: In order for steam to leave the openings on the base, the steam regulator (valve) must be open and the steam ready indicator illuminated. Defective pressure thermostat: If there is a defect with this component, the steam in the boiler can not reach a sufficient steam temperature. Steam drum resistor cuts off: If the resistor in the steam drum does not operate continually, the water will not heat up and it will not be possible to produce steam. In these cases, the entire steam drum must be replaced. Defective electro-valve: If the electro-valve does not open when the steam button on the iron is pressed, and the temperature is correct, then steam will not reach the iron from the drum. In these cases, replace the electro-valve. Defective low water level LED: If the low water level LED does not illuminate when temperatures over 165ºC are detected by the low water level thermostat, the user will not receive information about the need to refill the water even when the steam drum is empty Checking the iron 1. Check the general conditions of the iron base. In extreme cases, limescale residue can obstruct the openings and steam will not be able to leave. 2. Check the operation of the micro-switch in the steam button on the iron. If this does not move correctly, the electro-valve will not receive the signal to open the passage of steam. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 20 von 24

7.6 External parts are broken This may be due to damage in transit or while in use. In this case, decide how the damage has happened depending on the state of the iron. If it is obvious that the iron has been used a lot, because of the presence of scale, etc., the damage has occurred during use. However, if the iron does not appear to have any traces of scale, the cord is wound up as at the factory, etc., the damage has occurred during transit. In these cases, the solution consists of informing the user of the terms of the guarantee. droplets are coming out of the openings on the iron base, this is most probably due to limescale within the steam chamber (inside the base). - Limescale stains (white or brown) around the openings on the base: In these cases, the limescale is more serious and could even block the openings on the base. 7.7 Dirt in the openings A product has been added to the water (e.g. perfume, softener, etc...) In these cases, it will be necessary to check the tank and the dosing assembly because characteristic stains of the product that has been added will normally have been left behind. Inform the user that the terms of the guarantee do not cover repairs arising from the misuse of the appliance Limescale residue The presence of limescale within the base normally gives rise to one of the following symptoms: - Dirty water ( brown ) through the openings on the base: If the user claims that the iron is staining clothes or that brown The way to proceed in these cases is as follows: - If there is a low level of limescale (not blocking the openings): Perform one or more limescale removing cycles using the special limescale remover for irons (Ref ). - If there is a high level of limescale: Replace the iron base. Warning! Given that limescale or dirty water problems are not due to a defect with the appliance but rather a lack of maintenance or misuse by the user, under no circumstances are these repairs or replacements covered by the guarantee. 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 21 von 24

7.8 The sole plate does not reach the right temperature With this type of complaint, first of all it is necessary to check the temperature of the sole plate, there being two possible outcomes: - The temperature is correct: The thermostat is working correctly, if the maximum temperature ( max position on the temperature setting), the thermostat cuts out at ºC. The problem amounts to improper use on the part of the user, who has not been adequately informed about the correct positions of the temperature setting for each type of fabric. - The temperature is inadequate: In this case, the thermostat should be tested and, where necessary, replaced with a new one. 7.9 Dripping through the steam vents Dripping through the steam vents is not always due to a technical fault: - Dripping during the first few seconds of use: As indicated in the instruction manual, this is not due to a defect in the appliance, but to one of the following two causes: o The user has pressed the steam button before the iron has reached the right temperature (pilot light indicating that steam is ready) o There is condensation in the hose due to the iron not having been used for a certain length of time. This phenomenon will disappear after a few seconds. - Constant dripping: This may be due to one of three main causes: o The user does not select the maximum temperature setting (settings oo and ooo) on the temperature dial of the iron. In this case the sole plate of the iron is too cold and the steam coming from the hose condenses and drips out of the iron. o Defect in the state of the steam (the steam is not generated correctly) o Defect in the iron (the sole plate does not reach the right temperature) Checking the iron If dripping is due to a defect in the iron, this is probably because the sole plate does not get hot enough. Check the following: - Plug the iron in and see whether it heats up. If it fails to heat up, check that there is continuity in the element and in the thermo- fuse. If there is a fault in the element, change the sole plate. If the thermofuse has blown, replace the thermofuse and the thermostat (adjust it!) - If the iron heats up, check that when on maximum power (ooo setting on the temperature dial) the iron reaches 180 ºC. If it cuts out below this temperature, change the thermostat and readjust accordingly. - Check the date of manufacture of the iron: in irons with dates of manufacture between FD8705 and FD8801, the steam hose material may be worn, causing a fine layer of silicon to build up in the steam chamber which prevents it from generating steam correctly. In irons with these manufacturing dates and drip problems, change the sole plate and steam hose (the spare parts do not have this flaw). 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 22 von 24

Steam tube FILL THE TANK WITHOUT GOING OVER THE LIMIT. (Max. capacity. 1L) Sole plate Checking the state of the steam In the ironing centre, apart from the faults caused by the iron, the steam generator may also have the following faults: - Initial dripping: It is normal for water to drip out of the iron for a few seconds when steam is released through the sole plate. This is due to the hose being cold: the water condenses on the walls of the tube until it reaches a temperature of over 100ºC. - Fault in the pressure thermostat: If the pressure thermostat cuts out at a temperature below 145ºC, the water inside the drum will not have reached a high enough temperature and may drip through the vents in the sole plate. - Fault in the electrovalve: If the electrovalve is constantly open, the drum will gradually empty out, with the water being evacuated through the vents in the sole plate. If no technical fault is detected, the problem may be due to the user filling the drum with too much water (more than 1 litre). This may cause the drum to fill up completely, leaving no room for the steam. In such cases, the small amount of steam that can be generated is usually accompanied by drops of water. If this happens, the user should: 204_ _ARA_EN_B a Seite 23 von 24
