5 Short of space? BIOMASS CAN STILL WORK. There is a general misconception that biomass installation need huge amounts of space. Indeed there is a degree of truth in this, especially if you are looking at log or fully automated systems due to either the size of the buffer required or the space needed for a silo. However, Palazzetti the Italian manufacturer has a range of pellet stoves (heat through circulating hot air) and pellet boiler stoves (central heating and domestic hot water) which actually have very small footprints, generally no more than a single kitchen unit (600mm x 600mm). These stoves and boilers are designed to sit within the house and to provide an attractive feature fire (flames can be seen through the glass window) whilst also heating the room and the whole house. The compactness of the units and the small flue size (100mm) allows these units to be installed in virtually any size house including terraced properties if the existing chimney is still in existence so that a liner can be fitted. Being smaller units they do have a smaller pellet store which would require topping up more frequently and some greater occupier inputs are required as they are not as automated as some of the more expensive pellet boilers. Nevertheless, they can provide an affordable solution that provides property owners to benefit from lower running costs and RHI payments.

A thermal store is similar to a buffer tank where the heat is pumped directly from the biomass boiler into the store. Unlike a buffer it contains a coil which is used to warm the customers hot water directly (like a gas combination boiler). Heat from the thermal store is pumped around the heating system and would not require a separate hot water cylinder. What is a buffer? A buffer is a large hot water tank where heat is pumped directly from the biomass boiler. The buffer is used to store energy so that the biomass boiler can run for a longer period of time rather than short cycles which is inefficient. Heat is taken from the buffer unit and pumped around the existing system. A buffer would be used in conjunction with a hot water cylinder. 11 Igneo SLIM CONTROLLER Igneo is a superbly advanced controller that has many features to give ultimate boiler control to the homeowner. Thanks to Igneo s advanced algorithm there are a number of system set ups, reports and logs on offer so the boiler can be truly tailored to a households required use. Igneo fully controls both the heating system and domestic hot water usage. It has a user friendly display that is generously sized for easy operation. Features include operating status and boiler report logs that monitor a variety of parameters including temperature from the burner to boiler and feeder operating times, this allows for optimum fuel control. The controller also displays measured temperatures, i.e. in room, radiators, buffer tank, hot water and outdoor temperature. Igneo can also be controlled remotely via GSM or Modem for the ultimate user control.
