3 INTRODUCTION The Suburban Difference Suburban developed the first gas-fired packaged terminal air conditioner (PTAC) in Now, in its third generation design, Suburban is a leading supplier to the senior housing industry as well as other small commercial markets. Suburban is a giant in small space gas heating. We pioneered push button and automatic solid state spark ignitions, and energy-saving DC motors. Suburban dominates the recreational vehicle market with compact heating furnaces, water heaters, and ranges. Introducing DynaPack To continue the Suburban tradition of providing year-round comfort in a fully self-contained heating and cooling system, Suburban offers DynaPack. This vertical packaged air conditioner features cooling comfort along with high-efficiency gas heat. The DynaPack range of products features cooling from 1-3 tons and efficient 36 to 60 MBTU gas heat. The S-series offers heat inputs from MBTU at 80% efficiency. The H-series offers heat inputs from MBTU at 90% + efficiency. Both series have a cooling EER of DynaPack s sealed combustion furnace draws outside air through the heat exchanger under negative pressure, and vents the products of combustion directly to the outside atmosphere. Solid-state, electronic, spark ignition (DSI) with no open flame is the modern alternative to pilot lights. DSI increases energy conservation while ensuring safety. And, with DynaPack s adjustable exhaust vent pipe, you have the flexibility to utilize wall sleeves from 4" to 22" to accommodate various wall depths. Each DynaPack unit can be ducted for multiple room conditioning, making it ideal for multi-family applications. And, with a built-in condensing unit, DynaPack can easily be installed in multi-story apartments and condominiums. Every DynaPack unit can also be metered for individual apartment occupancy. So, whether your needs require individually zoned PTAC s or ducted, multiple room conditioning, Suburban has the cost effective solutions to satisfy your building specification requirements. 3

The DynaPack unit has been safety certified by Intertek Testing Services to comply with the national safety codes of the USA and Canada. All DynaPack units are certified to operate on natural gas. LP gas is available for S Series only. The DynaPack unit is NOT certified for installation in a mobile home. Installations in the USA must be in accordance with city, county, or state codes and regulations. If local codes do not apply then the installation must be made in accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code and the National Electrical Code. Installations made in Canada likewise must be in accordance with city, provincial, or national codes or the current version of CANI-B149 Installation Code. WARNING! In the state of Massachusetts: This product must be installed by a licensed Plumber or Gas Fitter. When flexible connectors are used, the maximum length shall not exceed 36". When lever-type gas shutoffs are used, they shall be T-handle type. The outdoor fan discharge or the condenser air intake cannot be connected to field fabricated ducting. This unit can only be installed using the factory supplied wall sleeves. MINIMUM OPERATIONAL CLEARANCES The DynaPack unit is approved for indoor installation only and must be installed with one of the factory supplied wall sleeves. The unit is intended to be installed in a closet or equipment room. The unit is certified for 0" clearance to the cabinet sides, cabinet back and the first 3 feet of the supply duct. However, for accessibility reasons it is recommended to maintain at least 1" clearance on the sides for proper installation and servicing. For closet installations allow 4" clearance from the unit door panels to the closet door. For equipment room installations allow 24" clearance from the unit door panels to a wall for servicing. The wall sleeve is intended to be installed flush with the exterior wall. The outside grille would then be mounted immediately inside the sleeve opening, flush with the outside of the sleeve. The installer can apply casing around the grille for a more pleasing appearance. The unit, wall sleeve, and grille are required to be installed certain distances for adjacent doors, operable windows and shrubbery. See Figure 2. FIGURE 1 CAUTION: The unit should be installed level front to back and side to side. Adjust front leveling legs as necessary. 12 (continued on page 13)

CAUTION: Failure to properly adjust the vent can lead to exhaust recirculation and poor combustion. 1. The vent pipe adjustment is accessible from the condenser air discharge portion of the unit. The retaining screw for the vent pipe is located to the right of the condenser fan. 2. Remove and retain the #10 sheet metal screw which attaches the vent pipe to its mounting bracket. See Figure The vent extension tube contains six holes, each of which is intended for a particular wall sleeve depth. Use Figure 3 to select the proper mounting hole for the vent extension tube. 4. Reinstall the #10 sheet metal screw to secure the vent extension tube and exhaust tube to its mounting bracket. FIGURE 3 - S SERIES 14 (continued on page 15)

WHEN INSTALLED, PIPE SHOULD EXTEND PAST GRILLE 2" ± 1/2" VENT PIPE ADJUSTMENT FOR H SERIES UNITS The venting system for the Dynapack H 90% + condensing furnace must be completed in the field using 1-1/2" PVC schedule 40 DWV pipe. The vent pipe will be straight for the full unit width wall sleeves. See Figure 4 for the typical full unit width vent pipe installation. The vent pipe must terminate approximately two inches outside the exterior grille. FIGURE 4 FIGURE 5 15

16 WALL SLEEVE AND GRILLE INSTALLATION The wall sleeve is comprised of several components. The wall sleeve can be fully assembled and installed from inside the building except for the optional outside mounting angles. The wall sleeve can be fully assembled including the outside mounting angles and installed from outside the building if the opening is large enough to accommodate the unit guide brackets. The unit guide brackets flare out slightly from the wall sleeve. Start the assembly by attaching the top panel to the left-side and right-side panels. The ends without flanges face the outside of the building. See Figure 6. Install the divider panel into the wall sleeve with the flanges pointing down. See Figure 6. Determine whether the drain located in the wall sleeve drain pan will face the outside or the inside of the building. Turn the drain pan appropriately and attach the side panels to the drain pan. See Figure 6. Install a unit guide bracket on each side of the wall sleeve. See Figure 7. The wall sleeve can now be installed in the wall from the inside of the room or install from outside if the outside mounting angles are attached to the wall sleeve. See Figure 8 for wall cutout dimensions and cut out opening in wall. The bottom of the opening is intended to be the sill plate, or the wall sleeve may be installed flush with the floor. See Figure 9. NOTE: The wall opening dimensions shown are the minimum allowable dimensions including any corner brackets, nail heads, or screw heads. The wall sleeve can be installed in any type of wall. If installing in a stud wall, start the wall opening flush with one stud and measure over horizontally the appropriate dimension as shown in Table 2. The other side should be shimmed so the wall sleeve can be attached to the wall studs on both sides in three places each. Holes must be drilled in the wall sleeve for the attachment screws. The installer can alternately center the wall sleeve between wall studs and shim on both sides. Before installing the wall sleeve in a wood siding building, it is recommended that flashing (field supplied) be installed beginning on the bottom of the opening, then the sides insuring that the flashing on the sides overlap the bottom flashing so any rain water is directed out of the structure. After the wall sleeve is installed, flashing can be applied to the top of the wall sleeve. In other types of building construction, seal or caulk the gap between the wall sleeve and the structure on all four sides. If the wall sleeve is to be installed on the sill plate, then the end that connects to the Dynapack unit should not extend more than 1 inch past the sill plate. If it does then the sill plate should be extended to fully support the wall sleeve bottom/drain pan. Do not drill holes in the bottom of the wall sleeve drain pan for attachment. Install the wall sleeve into the opening. Check and make sure the drain pan on the wall sleeve is level front to back and left to right. NOTE: IF THE WALL SLEEVE IS NOT LEVEL AND PLUMB THEN THE UNIT WILL NOT BE LEVEL AND PLUMB. Securely attach the wall sleeve to the wall by screwing through the sides of the wall sleeve into the wall. If desired this can also be done when the grille mounting brackets are installed. If it is desired to attach the wall sleeve to the building outdoor siding then also install the mounting angles when installing the grille mounting brackets. See Figure 7. The grille mounting brackets and the outside mounting angles contain small holes for screw engagement. Drill out to a larger size for screw clearance. 16 (continued on page 17)

17 Install the threaded studs into the grille at 6 locations. See Figure 15. Install the grille by passing through the lower section of the wall sleeve and securing the grille mounting brackets with nuts and washers. Apply the 1/8 thick gasket to the inside top edge of the base/drain pan. Install the corner gaskets into the corner notches of the base/drain pan. Caulk any gaps in the gaskets between the top panel and the side panels. If the wall sleeve drain is on the inside of the building, now is the time to construct and install the drain using 3/4 PVC pipe and fittings. See Figure 11 for suggestions on the drain routing. Pour water into the drain pan to check for leaks in the piping. Install the DynaPack unit onto the wall sleeve by lifting the unit 3/4" and placing unit bottom flange over the wall sleeve drain pan. See Figure 12. A pallet jack is the best tool to accomplish this. A refrigerator dolly or two wheel dolly can also be used but is not as effective. Raise the unit and temporary prop up with boards. Install a front leveling leg bracket on the front bottom edge of each side using two #12 x 3/4 drill screws on each bracket. See Figure 13. Install two 3/8 nuts on each leveling leg and run them down until the nesting brackets fits under the leveling leg bracket and installs into the slot on the leveling leg bracket. See Figure 13. Secure the Dynapack unit to the wall sleeve by attaching the bracket assembly on each side of the Dynapack unit with two #10 x 1.5 drill screws on each side. See Figure 13. Double check the level and pitch of the unit from side to side and front to back. Readjust the leg leveler screws if necessary. Tighten the leveling leg jam nut. 22 SECURING DYNAPACK TO WALL SLEEVE INSTALLING AND SECURING UNIT TO WALL SLEEVE Before installing and securing the unit to the wall sleeve, make sure that the proper grille kit is installed. Due to the temperatures of the combustion products released from the gas vent, DynaPack gas package units require the use of an aluminum grille kit (see ACCESSORIES on page 36). 1. Double check the installation of the wall sleeve to make sure it is securely attached to the wall opening. Inspect the wall sleeve drain for proper installation if an inside drain is being used. 2. Examine the gaskets on the wall sleeve to make sure there is a continuous seal between the wall sleeve and the unit. 3. Place DynaPack unit onto the wall sleeve. Lift 3/4" and place over the wall sleeve base (see Figure 13). A pallet jack works well for this. Temporarily block the unit up and install front leveling bracket (see Figure 13). Adjust leveling legs to level. 4. Use the two installation brackets and two straps to secure the unit to the wall sleeve (see Figure 16). Verify that the gaskets of the wall sleeve make a complete seal to the unit paying particular attention to top and bottom corners of the unit to sleeve seal. Caulk if needed. This filter can be used if the unit is installed so that the filter is accessible to the homeowner. The permanent filter installed inside the unit must be removed and discarded if a disposable filter is installed in the return air duct. See Table 3 for the minimum filter area required for the DynaPack unit based on unit capacity. It is recommended that air filters be cleaned or replaced monthly to keep the cooling coil and interior duct surfaces clean and able to operate most efficiently. Optional MERV 13 filters are available. 22 (continued on page 23)

26 H SERIES CONDENSATE DRAIN - COOLING The Dynapack unit and wall sleeve each have there own drain. The unit drain is for the condensate developed by the evaporator coil. It needs to be trapped and routed to the building drain system. Use 3/4" pvc pipe and fittings (field supplied). The wall sleeve is equipped with a drain pan that collects rain water entering the wall sleeve and the unit condenser coil area. At the time of installation of the wall sleeve, this drain can be directed directly outside or turned inside and routed to the building drain system. If the wall sleeve drain is routed to the building sewer system then it must be trapped to prevent sewer gasses from escaping. CONDENSATE DRAIN - FURNACE The high efficiency furnace in this unit will produce condensate when operating. In addition, a trap is needed in order to overcome the negative pressure produced by the combustion inducer blower. 1. With the gas valve access panel removed, connect the drain trap to the internal drain hose using the straight barb fitting provided. 2. Install the 3/4" x 3/4" x 5/8" tee fitting in the air conditioner drain line just below where it exits from the Dynapack unit. 3. Complete the furnace drain line by installing the 5/8" 90 degree barb elbow into the drain trap hose. 4. Install a 5/8" vinyl hose between the 90 degree fitting and tee fitting installed in the air conditioner drain line. See Figure 18. The furnace condensate line will self prime on startup. 26 (continued on page 27)

28 ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS/WIRING ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS The DynaPack unit is approved using copper conductors only. See the unit data plate for unit minimum circuit ampacity. Size the wire based on the unit circuit ampacity, type of wire used, and method of wiring, in conduit or open. If the electrical supply is 208 volt, then do not exceed 3% voltage drop based on the length of wire run. See the National Electrical Code or the Canadian Electrical Code for more information. When 208 volt supply drops below 197 volts, a field installed start assist kit will be necessary. The typical electrical supply is two phase wires where voltage measured is volts phase to phase. An additional wire for unit grounding is required. See the unit data plate for the maximum fuse or circuit breaker size. It is recommended that time delay fuses or a two pole HACR breaker be used in order to prevent nuisance trips. Alternately, the DynaPack unit may be wired with one phase wire where the voltage measured is volts phase to neutral. In this case, the phase wire should be connected to L1 on the contactor. An additional wire for unit grounding is required. CONTROL WIRING The room thermostat should be installed on an interior wall and near the return air for the unit. It is recommended that a 5 conductor thermostat wire be used in case the room thermostat needs power from the unit transformer. The low voltage pigtails for the thermostat wiring must be routed to the outside of the DynaPack unit for connection. The DynaPack unit contains a second knockout above the control box for this purpose. The National Electrical Code requires that low voltage wiring be kept separate from high voltage wiring and cannot be routed through the same knockout or conduit. Local codes may also require that an electrical box be installed on the low voltage knockout to contain the electrical connections. Follow the thermostat manufacturers instructions for mounting and wiring. The low voltage is grounded inside the unit control box. See the wiring diagram - Figure 19 on page 29. On 208 volt systems the transformer wiring needs to be changed. Swap the red transformer wire for the orange wire for 208 volt operation. A disconnect should be installed next to the unit so the electrical power can be turned off for servicing or maintenance. 28 (continued on page 29)

29 FIGURE 19 29

30 GAS SUPPLY AND PIPING GAS SUPPLY * LP gas available for S Series only. All DynaPack units are built to operate on natural gas. The unit must be converted using the manufacturers conversion kit in order to operate on LP gas*. WARNING! Any conversion of a natural gas unit to liquefied petroleum (LP) gas* must be done by qualified personnel using a conversion kit available from the manufacturer, following the instructions in the conversion kit. If done improperly, over firing of the burners and improper burner operation can result. This can create carbon monoxide which could cause asphyxiation. Minimum gas supply pressure for purposes of input adjustment: Fuel Minimum Maximum Natural Gas 5" Water Column 10" Water Column Liquefied Petroleum (LP) Gas* 11" Water Column 13" Water Column (Available for S Series only) GAS PIPING The DynaPack unit has a 1/2" pipe connection for the gas line. The size of the gas piping must be based on the length of the run and not the connection size. See Table 8 for reference pipe sizing. Consult with the local gas utility or code authority for gas piping installation. If local codes allow the use of a flexible gas appliance connector, always use a new listed connector. Do not use a connector which has previously serviced another gas appliance. The gas piping should contain a manual shut off valve with test port near the furnace in addition to a drip leg and a ground joint union for servicing. The test port needs to be upstream of the manual shut off valve for leak testing and adjusting the supply pressure regulator. The manual shut off valve must be rated for the gas piping test pressure. If not, then the shut off valve must be removed from the piping system during testing. Once the gas piping up to the shut off valve has been tested, the remaining piping to the unit gas valve must be tested. Do not exceed1/2 psig or 14" water column for this test or the gas valve may be damaged. CAUTION: Suburban does not recommend the use of flex tubing to make the gas connections to the unit unless the flex tubing is a high quality stainless certified by CSA and approved for use by local code. 30 (continued on page 31)

32 START UP/SYSTEM PERFORMANCE UNIT START - UP CAUTION: This furnace is equipped with a direct ignition control. Do not attempt to manually light the burners. BEFORE OPERATING, smell all around the appliance area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor. If you smell gas STOP. Open the windows and doors to clear out any gas. Recheck all gas piping and connections for leaks. To check the unit operation: 1. Make sure the gas valve is switched ON. Remove the gas compartment door. Turn the gas valve knob or move the switch to the ON position. See Figure 20. Do not use any tools to turn the knob. If you are unable to push in and turn the knob by hand then call a qualified service technician for assistance. Replace the gas compartment door. 2. Turn on electrical power to the unit. 3. Switch the room thermostat to heat. 4. Raise the set point to above the room temperature. 5. The thermostat will call for heat and the combustion blower will begin to operate. 6. The combustion blower will operate for 15 to 20 seconds before the ignition controls begin sparking, then the gas valve will open and the burners will light. The burners can be viewed through the sight glass in the door panel. 7. The room air blower starts 30 seconds after the burners light. 8. Once the room reaches the set temperature, the burners turn off and the room air blower turns off 90 seconds later. 9. Switch the room thermostat over to cooling. 10. Lower the set point to below the room temperature. 11. After a slight delay the room air blower will begin to run and the compressor will start. NOTE: There will be a 5 minute delay in the compressor starting if the thermostat set point was raised and then lowered again. 12. Once the room reaches the set temperature, the compressor will turn off and the room air blower will turn off 30 seconds later. 32 (continued on page 33)

33 TO SHUT DOWN UNIT To turn off the unit switch the room thermostat to OFF. Turn the electrical power off and close the manual gas supply valve before performing any service to the unit. Heating Adjustments 1. Turn off the unit at the room thermostat and shut off the manual gas valve. See Figure Connect a pressure gauge with suitable range (0 to 10" for natural and 0 to 15" for LP*) to the inlet pressure port on the gas valve. See Figure Open the manual gas valve and turn the unit on. 4. Once the furnace is operating, check the inlet gas pressure. Adjust the pressure regulator to obtain an inlet pressure of 5" to 7" water column for natural gas and 11" to 13" for LP gas*. 5. Turn off the unit and shut off the manual gas valve. 6. Move the pressure gauge to the manifold pressure port on the gas valve. See Figure Once the furnace is operating, check the manifold pressure. Adjust the gas valve pressure regulator to obtain a manifold pressure of 3.5" water column for natural gas and 10.0" water column for LP gas*. 8. On natural gas installations the input to the furnace must be checked to insure safe operation. Any other gas appliances that use the gas meter must be turned off including the pilot lights. 9. With the DynaPack furnace running, count the time it takes for the gas meter to make one revolution. Also record the gas meter rate of cubic feet per revolution. You will also need the average heating value of the natural gas for your location. Plug these factors into the equation below to calculate the gas input rate to the furnace in BTU per hour. BTU/HR Input Cubic Feet Per = Revolution Number of Seconds X 3600 X Per Revolution Heating Valve 10. Your recorded value on input must be within + or - 2% of the rated input. If it is not then adjust the manifold pressure lower to reduce the input or higher to increase the input. Do not go outside of 3.2" to 3.8" water column. 11. The only adjustment for LP gas* is to maintain the 10" water column manifold pressure. 12. Turn off the unit, close the manual gas valve, and remove the pressure gauge. Make sure the gas valve pressure port plug screws are tightened along with the gas valve regulator cap. Replace the burner compartment door. 13. Open the manual gas valve and turn on the furnace. 14. Place a thermometer in the return air along with one in the supply air as close to the furnace as possible. Once the supply air temperature is constant, record both temperatures. Subtract the return air temperature from the supply air temperature. This difference is the temperature rise of the furnace. 15. Compare the measured temperature rise to the nameplate range. If the measured rise is lower than the nameplate minimum, then select the next lower blower speed for the heating speed. If the measured temperature rise is above the nameplate maximum, then select the next higher blower speed for the heating speed. 16. If a new blower speed was selected then re-measure the temperature rise and repeat the adjustment if needed. * LP gas available for S Series only. (continued on page 34) 33
