5 WARNING: Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. This is a propane (LP), direct-fired, forced air heater. It's intended use is primarily temporary heating of buildings under construction, alteration or repair. SAVE ALL WARNINGS AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE Propane gas is heavier than air. If propane leaks from a connection or fitting, it sinks to the floor, collecting there with the surrounding air, forming a potentially explosive mixture. Propane leaks must be avoided, set up the propane supply carefully. Check all new connections or re-connections with a mix of dish soap and water solution and follow all connection instructions herein. Your propane dealer should be available for advice on the propane application and supply installation and should be able to answer questions. This heater was designed and certified for use as a construction heater in accordance with ANSI Standard Z / CSA STD Check with your local fire safety authority if you have any questions about your applications. Other standards govern the use of fuel gases and heat producing products in specific applications. Your local authority can advise you about these. This heater is Direct-Fired which means that all of the combustion products enter the heated space. Even though this heater operates very close to 100% combustion efficiency, it still produces small amounts of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (called CO) is toxic. Humans can tolerate small amounts but not a lot. CO can build up in an enclosed heated space and failure to provide adequate ventilation could result in death. The symptoms of inadequate ventilation are: Headache Dizziness Burning Eyes and Nose Nausea Dry Mouth or Sore Throat Difficulty in Breathing Be sure to follow the advice about ventilation in these operating instructions. Forced Air means that a blower or fan pushes the air through the heater. Proper combustion depends upon proper air flow; therefore all openings of the heater must be left clear and free of obstructions. The heater must not be revised, modified or operated with parts removed or missing. Likewise, safety systems must not be circumvented or modified in order to operate the heater. When the heater is to be operated in the presence of other people the user is responsible for properly acquainting those present with the safety precautions and instructions, and of the hazards involved in its use. GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS 1. Check the heater thoroughly for damage. DO NOT operate a damaged heater. 2. DO NOT modify the heater or operate a heater which has been modified from its original condition. 3. Use only propane (LP) gas. 4. Use only VAPOR WITHDRAWAL propane (LP) supply. If there is any question about vapor withdrawal, ask your propane dealer. 5. Mount the propane cylinders vertically (shutoff valve up). Secure them from falling or being knocked over and protect them from damage. 6. Locate propane (LP) containers at least (USA) 7 ft. (2.13m), (Canada) 10 ft. (3m) from the heater and do not direct exhaust toward containers. 7. The gas heaters must only be used on fire-resistant floors. 8. IMPORTANT Use only the hose and regulator assembly provided with the heater. Inspect hose assembly before each use of the heater. If there is excessive abrasion or wear, or hose is cut, replace with hose assembly listed on parts list before using heater. 9. For indoor use only. Area must be well ventilated. Provide minimum openings of 1/2 sq. ft. (.046 m²) near the floor and 1/2 sq. ft. (.046 m²) near the ceiling (also see "Operating Precautions"). 10. If at any time gas odor is detected, IMMEDIATELY DISCONTINUE operation until the source of gas has been located and corrected. 11. Install the heater such that it is not directly exposed to water spray, rain and/or dripping water. 12. Maintain minimum clearance from normal combustible material (like paper) as follows: outlet-8 ft. (2.4 m); sides-2 ft. (.6 m); top-6 ft. (1.8 m). Locate 10 ft. (3 m) from canvas or plastic tarpaulins or similar coverings and secure them to prevent flapping or movement due to wind or other actions. 13. Due to the high surface and exhaust temperatures, adults and children must observe clearances to avoid burns or clothing ignition. Keep away from children and mentally impaired adults 14. Operate only on a stable, level surface. 15. Do not use with ductwork. Do not restrict air inlet or exit. 16. Use only the electrical power specified. The electrical connection and grounding must comply with National and Local Electrical Codes 17. This appliance has a three prong grounded plug that must be inserted into a matching properly grounded outlet to reduce the risk of electrical shock. Do not defeat this safety feature. Use only a properly grounded 3-prong extension cord. 18. Do not move, handle or service while hot or burning. 19. Use only in accordance with local codes or, in the absence of local codes, with the Standard for the Storage and Handling of Liquefied Petroleum Gases ANSI/NFPA 58 and CSA B149.1, Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code. 5

6 GENERAL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Asphyxiation Hazard Do not use this heater for heating human living quarters. Do not use in unventilated areas. The flow of combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed. Proper ventilation air must be provided to support the combustion air requirements of the heater being used. Refer to the specification section of the heater s manual or heater dataplate to determine combustion air ventilation requirements of the heater. Lack of proper ventilation air will lead to improper combustion. Improper combustion can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning leading to serious injury or death. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, burning eyes and nose, nausea, dry mouth or sore throat and difficulty in breathing. PROPANE (LP) FUEL GAS ODOR Propane (LP) gas and natural gas have man-made odorants added specifically for detection of fuel gas leaks. It can be described as a rotten egg" smell. If a gas leak occurs you should be able to smell the fuel gas. Since propane (LP) is heavier than air you should smell for the gas odor low to the floor. ANY GAS ODOR OR SMELL IS YOUR SIGNAL START IMMEDIATE ACTION! Do not take any action that could ignite the fuel gas. Do not operate any electrical switches. Do not pull any power supply or extension cords. Do not light matches or any other source of flame. Do not use your telephone. Get everyone out of the building and away from the area immediately. Close all propane (LP) gas tanks or cylinder fuel supply valves. Propane (LP) gas is heavier than air and may settle in low areas. When you have reason to suspect a propane leak, keep out of all low areas. While outside the building call your fuel gas supplier and your fire department. Do not re-enter the building or area in question. Stay out of the building and away from the area until declared safe by the firefighters and your fuel gas supplier. Be sure to have the fuel gas service person and the firefighters check for escaped gas. Have them air out the building and area before you return. Properly trained service people must repair any leaks, check for further leakages, and then have them relight the appliance for you. PROPANE (LP) ODOR FADING - NO ODOR DETECTED Some people cannot smell well and cannot smell the odor of the man-made chemical added to propane (LP) or natural gas. You must determine if you can smell the odorant in these fuel gases. Learn to recognize the odor of propane (LP) gas and natural gas. It can be described as a rotten egg smell. The odorant can fade over time so leaking gas is not always detectable by smell alone. Local propane (LP) gas dealers will be more than happy to give you a scratch and sniff pamphlet. Use it to become familiar with the fuel gas odor. Smoking can decrease your ability to smell. Being around an odor for a period of time can affect your sensitivity to that particular odor. Odors present in animal confinement buildings can mask fuel gas odor. If there is an underground leak, the movement of gas through the soil can filter the odorant but the danger may still exist. Propane (LP) gas odor may differ in intensity at different levels. Since propane (LP) gas is heavier than air, there may be more odor at lower levels. Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor. If you continue to detect any gas odor, no matter how small, treat it as a serious leak. Take immediate action as discussed previously. CRITICAL POINTS TO REMEMBER! Propane (LP) gas has a distinctive odor. Learn to recognize these odors. Reference Propane (LP) Fuel Gas Odor and Propane (LP) Odor Fading sections above. Make all persons aware of the heaters use and to always be consciously aware of the odors of propane (LP) gas. If you have not been properly trained in the use and service of propane (LP) gas then do not attempt to light heater, perform service or repairs, or make any adjustments to the heater on the propane (LP) gas fuel system. A periodic sniff test around the heater or at the heater s connections; i.e. hose to heater and hose/regulator to tank etc., is a good safety practice under all conditions. If you smell even a small amount of gas, CONTACT YOUR FUEL GAS SUPPLIER IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT WAIT! 6

7 GUIDELINES OF FUEL GASES: This heater is intended for the use of temporary heating of buildings under construction, alteration or remodeling. There may also be other local standards or regulations governing the use of fuel gases and heating products. You can get advice from your relevant local authority. Propane and butane belong to the odorless fuel gases family. Normally gas suppliers will add an odor-making agent to help you detect a gas leakage. However, the odor added can fade over time. Fuel gases maybe present even though no odor exists. This heater is intended for use with Propane (I3P). Any other fuel gas is considered misuse and dangerous. To check the leakage of propane (LP) please use a professional gas leakage detector or simply with mix of dish soap and water solution. Never check with a flame! Propane (LP) is heavier than air. If there is a leakage, it sinks to the lowest possible level, collecting there with the surrounding air, forming a potentially explosive mixture. It is prohibited to use these gas heaters in high rise buildings, bedrooms, bathrooms, basements or below ground level. Fig. 1 FUEL GASES Be sure that the heater is only used with correct ventilation. Make sure that no object is obstructing the fan air intake. (Fig. 2) OXYGEN DELETION: The combustion of propane (LP) will consume a lot of oxygen. The minimum ventilation required by these heaters is 30cm³ per kw of heat output is strongly recommended. Never use the heater in an enclosed space. CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) POISONING Even though the direct-fired system of this heater operates very close to 100% combustion efficiency, it still generate small amounts of CO. Some people are more affected by CO than others. CO can build up in an enclosed space and failure to provide adequate ventilation could result in death. The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headache, dizziness, burning eyes and nose, nausea, dry mouth or sore throat and difficulty in breathing. Be sure to follow all advice about ventilation. Fig. 2 VENTILATION 7

8 OPERATION AND USE PREPARE HEATER FOR OPERATION Check the heater, regulator, hose and POL fitting with o-ring thoroughly for damage. Do not use a damaged heater or hose assembly. Be sure the heating area is adequately ventilated, free of moisture and dust, far away from any combustible material as directed in this manual. Always put the propane (LP) gas cylinder behind the heater in a stable position. Never put the gas cylinder in front of the heater (Fig. 3). IMPORTANT User must locate heater at a safe distance from all combustible materials. (Fig. 4.), see specifications section for details. Use only supplied approved gas regulator and approved gas hose. Gas hose should be in its natural form without excessive bending and not twisted or kinked, ensure all connections are gas tight on regulator and hose. Heaters shall not be directed toward any propane (LP) gas container within 20ft. (6m). Fig. 3 When connecting to the gas cylinder, ensure the area is flame free to prevent risk of explosion. Confirm propane (LP) tank cylinder is closed by turning the cylinder valve knob fully clockwise (Fig. 6). Connect small end of gas hose to the heater at the rear of the unit (Fig. 5 (C)). Thread this connection clockwise to tighten. Ensure the connection is gas tight. Thread the POL fitting attached to the regulator of gas hose assembly to the propane (LP) cylinder valve. NOTE: The gas connection to the heater has a reverse left hand thread (threads counter-clockwise to tighten). Ensure the connection is gas tight. Open propane (LP) tank valve slowly. Note: if not opened slowly, the excess flow monitor inside regulator may stop gas flow. If this happens, close propane (LP) tank valve, wait one minute (or until you hear a click) and open the valve again slowly. Check all connections with a professional gas leakage detector or with mix of dish soap and water solution. Never check for leaks with a flame! Close propane (LP) supply before attempting leak correction. Fig. 4 E D B A F C Fig. 5 Do not adjust regulator in any way. Thread the gas hose assembly to the heater ensuring that the rubber hose is not twisted or kinked.! CAUTION Risk of electric shock. TO PREVENT ELECTRIC SHOCK; this appliance has a three prong grounded plug that must be inserted into a matching properly grounded outlet to reduce the risk of electrical shock. Do not defeat this safety feature. 8
