Even small quantities of condensate can have a significant and detrimental effect on downstream equipment and processes. For calculations based upon your actual site conditions, please contact your local domnick hunter representative. The problem Condensate is always present when compressing air. Even the smallest system can produce large quantities of oily acidic condensate. Removing condensate from any compressed air system is vitally important. Even small quantities can have a significant and detrimental effect on downstream equipment and processes. Removal using drain valves is simple, however most are purchased on their initial price only, with little thought to their maintenance and running costs. The hidden cost with the most common drain types, lies within their operation, that is they discharge expensive compressed air. Air leaks are often the biggest single waste of energy associated with a compressed air system and are not always from piping, fittings or joints. The real cost Consider the short falls with the most common drain types Manual valves are often left open to discharge condensate, therefore discharging expensive system air at the same time. Open valves also reduce system pressure and may prevent the operation of downstream equipment. Mechanical float drains are sensitive to dirt found in un-filtered condensate and often stick open to permanently discharge air or stick closed leading to downstream contamination from condensate carryover. Disc and steam trap drains, through normal operation, constantly discharge valuable, expensive air, even if no condensate is present. They also emulsify condensate preventing easy on-site separation. Timed drains require frequent resetting of timer settings to accommodate changes in ambient conditions. When incorrectly set, they discharge significant amounts of valuable air or fail to remove all of the condensate resulting in downstream contamination. False economy? Consider the compressed air and energy losses associated with these common types of drain. What appears to be a good purchase could actually turn out to be the most expensive option. For example, a system using a single timed drain, could lose approximately 0.062m 3 /min (2.18 cfm) of air. Over a full year of continuous operation that equates to approximately 32,498m 3 (1,142,669ft 3 ) of air lost! In energy terms that single drain would use 3,581 kw (4,804 hp) of energy per year! Now multiply that by every drain of that type in the system.

5 Operation Compressed air condensate removed from the system enters the drain bowl monitors the liquid level. When the liquid level reaches a pre-determined point, 2 the solenoid valve is opened for a set duration A level sensor located within the drain bowl constantly Liquid is discharged from the drain bowl, under pressure, through the outlet port 4. The pre-set opening time has been selected to allow a small amount of condensate to remain within the bowl after the solenoid valve has closed. This eliminates any unnecessary loss of valuable compressed air. Level monitoring and discharge operation are continuous. The ED200 is shown but operation is identical for all models in the ED Range Alarm Mode Should the drain fail to discharge, due to an excessive volume of condensate or blocked outlet piping, an alarm mode is activated. The alarm mode is indicated by the normally solid green power LED flashing. During the alarm mode, the drain will continue to cycle to clear the liquid in the bowl. When clear, the drain will resume normal operation. Special Features - ED300/ED400/ED500 No unnecessary air loss does not discharge large volumes of air during operation. Standard models suitable for 24V/110V/230 V AC, 50/60 Hz operation. Integral valve protection strainer - Large surface area strainer is more efficient than inline strainers, requiring less maintenance. Correct product selection is critical for the operation of a condensate drain. Failure to correctly specify a condensate drain could result in condensate carryover, air-locking and premature valve failure. Capacities shown in this literature assume installation in two of the worlds major climatic conditions. Should the condensate drain be installed in conditions other than those shown, please contact your local domnick hunter approved distributor/agent for correct sizing. An example of how atmospheric conditions affect selection A 7 bar g, 2.83m 3 /min (102 psi g, 100 cfm) system operating in an ambient of 25 C, RH 65% (77 F, RH 65%), and with a discharge temperature of 35 C (95 F), will produce 1.77 L/hr (0.5 USG/hr) of condensate at the aftercooler alone. Increasing the ambient temperature from 25 C (77 F) to 35 C (95 F), and the discharge temperature from 35 C (95 F) to 45 C (113 F) will increase the condensate produced by a factor of 1.9, to 3.31L/hr (0.87 US G/hr). Increasing the temperatures as above and the relative humidity to 85% will increase the condensate produced by a factor of 2.7, to 4.8 L/hr (1.3 US G/hr). The addition of a refrigeration dryer to the system, further reduces the temperature and dewpoint and increases the condensate volume. The result of a 2 C (35 F) dewpoint can be seen on the previous calculations L/hr becomes 2.54 L/hr (0.5 US G/hr becomes 0.7 US G/hr) L/hr becomes 4.71 L/hr (0.87 US G/hr becomes 1.25 US G/hr). 4.8 L/hr becomes 6.2 L/hr (1.3 US G/hr becomes 1.64 US G/hr). As we can see, a flow rate of 2.83m 3 /min (100 cfm) can produce anywhere between 1.77 L/hr (0.5 US G/hr) and 6.2 L/hr (1.64 US G/hr). Each condensate drain model has a fixed condensate flowrate which cannot be exceeded. The condensate drain must be derated to accommodate the extra condensate produced.
