The installation must comply with these installation instructions and all relevant parts of Local and National Building Regulations or Building Standards (Scotland) (Consolidation) Regulations and those relevant recommendations of the following British Standards. BS 5871: Part 2 BS 6891 BS 1945 BS 5440: Parts 1 and 2 DM2 & DM3 (British Gas) IMPORTANT Before the installation of this appliance the total thickness of the outside wall must be ascertained. The distance between the outside of the wall and the outside of the infill panel of the fireplace must not be less than 265mm (10 1 /2 ) or more than 505mm (19 3 /4 ). The flue duct allows for a maximum wall thickness of 325mm (12 3 /4 ) when the appliance is installed on the wall and not inset (Add 25mm to the above dimensions if the spacer frame is not used). 3

2 THE HEARTH (See Figure 1) The hearth should meet the minimum dimensions shown in Figure 1. BALLADE FIRE FIGURE 1 3 BACK PANELS (See Figure 2) a) Any back panel must be able to withstand a working temperature of up to 70 O C. Back panels should not be hard fixed as this could cause cracking with expansion and contraction. b) The fire must not be fitted directly to a plastered wall without any back panel. c) If no mantel shelf is fitted, then the surround must extend a minimum of 300mm above the appliance and 100mm either side. (See Figure2) 4 WOODEN MANTELS (See Figure 3) Note: White painted wood mantels may discolour. Mantels with plastic mouldings above the centre of the fire should be avoided. Adjustable rebated mantels must have all packer pieces removed to minimise the projection over the fire. The minimum distance between the top of the fire and the mantel is 275mm, providing the projection from the front face of the back panel is not greater than 100mm. It is recommended that this distance be increased by 25mm for every 25mm increase in projection. FIGURE 2 4 FIGURE 3

5 To ensure an adequate supply of air for the convector to work efficiently, it is recommended that decorative frets have a minimum of 50cm 2 (8 sq in) of free air space through the ash pan cover. 6 VENTILATION This is a room-sealed appliance; therefore, there is no requirement for purpose made ventilation into the room containing the fire. 7 FLUE TERMINAL POSITION The minimum distances permissible from the flue terminal to obstructions and ventilation openings are shown in Figure 4 and in the table below. FIGURE 4 DIMENSION TERMINAL POSITION MINIMUM DISTANCE A Directly below an opening, air brick or window, etc mm B Below gutters, soil pipes or drain pipes 75mm C Below eaves 200mm D Below balconies or car port roof 200mm E From a vertical drainpipe or soil pipe 75mm F From an internal or external corner 300mm G Above ground or balcony level 150mm H From a surface facing the terminal 600mm I From a terminal facing a terminal 1200mm J From the opening in a carport 1200mm K Vertically from a terminal on the same wall 1500mm L Horizontally from a terminal on the same wall 300mm 5

REMOVING AND FITTING THE BURNER UNIT 1 Remove the glass door from the appliance by undoing the four fixing screws. Place the door carefully to one side for later use, ensuring that the glass is adequately protected. 2 Remove the eleven self tapping screws from the from burner cover taking care not to damage the gasket (See Figure 5) Remove the screws from the positions shown FIGURE 5 3 Place the burner unit to one side ready for refitting once the convector box has been fitted. FITTING THE FIREBOX IMPORTANT: A spacer frame is supplied with every appliance. For some types of surround (e.g. stone) this may be removed, but Verine Ltd will accept no liability for subsequent damage or deterioration resulting from heat generated by the appliance. 1 Measure the height of the hearth and mark a line on the wall to the same height, see Figure 6. 2 Above the hearth level line draw a rectangle 425mm (16 3 /4 ) wide and 560mm (22 ) high. Cut away the plaster and the inner leaf of brickwork at this line to expose the outer leaf. See Figure 7. 3 Screed the floor of the recess to the level of the hearth to allow for accurate fitting of the appliance. 4 On the inside of the outer brickwork, mark a horizontal line 442mm above hearth level, about the centre line. See Figure 6. 5 Remove the cavity box from the convector box by unscrewing the four fixing screws. Insert the cavity box in to the opening and mark the position of the two securing holes. Also check that the hole marked for the flue spigot lines up with the centre of the large hole in the cavity box. See Figure 7. If the distance from the cavity box to the inside of the outer wall is too far to use the two fixing holes in the cavity box, two holes should be drilled through the sides of the cavity box in to the opening in the inner leaf of the cavity. 6

FIGURE 6 FIGURE 7 6 In the positions marked, drill and plug two holes for the rear fixing screws and drill a pilot hole for the flue duct, through to the outside wall. A 152.4mm (6 ) diameter hole needs to be produced for the flue duct. It is strongly recommended that this be done using a diamond core drill, as it will make a neat, accurate job. If a core drill is not available, the hole will need to stitch drilled, about the pilot drill hole, to produce the required hole size. 7 It is suggested that the installer complete the installation of the fireplace before proceeding with the installation of the fire. The gas supply should be routed to the fireplace opening before the fireplace is permanently fitted. (See section 5 below) 8 Measure the distance from the front face of the fireplace infill panel to the outside of the wall and then from this figure deduct 60mm. Record this measurement. Measuring from the terminal of the flue duct assembly cut it to the recorded length. The cardboard fitting which holds the flue duct in the packaging carton has a notch in to support the duct when cutting. See Figure 8. A polystyrene insert is fitted in the flue duct to prevent distortion during cutting. This must be removed before the duct is fitted to the appliance. Debur the cut ends of the inner and outer flue ducts. See Figures 9 & 10. FIGURE 8 7

Plaster Inner Leaf of Cavity Wall Fire Surround Outer Leaf of Cavity Wall Cavity Infill Panel Measure this distance FIGURE 9 Flue Terminal DISTANCE MEASURED (SEE FIGURE 9) MINUS 60mm ** Cut to calculated length CALCULATED LENGTH = FIGURE 10 ** THIS DIMENSION SHOULD BE INCREASED TO 85mm IF THE SPACER FRAME IS NOT USED 9 Fix the flue assembly to the rear of the convector box. To make connection easier, the spigot for the inner duct projects slightly further forward than the inner and therefore, this duct should be connected first. Once both ducts are connected, drill through the holes in the socket in the convector box with a 3.5mm drill in to the outer duct and screw in place with the three self-tapping screws supplied. Seal around the joint with the length of aluminium tape supplied. 10 Slide the spacer frame over the cavity box. Refit the cavity box in to the opening and secure in place through the rear fixing holes. The spacer frame is not attached to the appliance; it is simply sandwiched between the cavity box and the back panel of the fireplace. NOTE: The spacer frame must be fitted with the wider flanged side against the back panel. 8

IMPORTANT: Do not over tighten the screws as the outside of the box may close up, which will prevent the convector box from fitting correctly. Place the firebox in position within the fireplace opening and secure to the cavity box flange with four machine screws. 11 Place a bead of heat resistant sealant between the brickwork and the duct. THE GAS SUPPLY (See Figure 11) 1 The gas supply should be routed from the meter to a point convenient to the appliance. At this point, the installer should reduce to 8mm rigid or semi rigid tubing. 2 ROUTING THE SUPPLY FROM THE REAR OF THE APPLIANCE. It is recommended that, for ease of installation, the 8mm pipe be routed to the fire opening from the rear of the appliance. To achieve this, the hole position at the rear of the cavity box (which lines up with the hole in the convector box) should be marked on the outside wall and an appropriate sized hole drilled to allow the pipe to pass through. The hole must be sleeved before the supply pipe is run through the wall. 3 ROUTING THE SUPPLY FROM THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE APPLIANCE When routing the supply pipe from the right hand side of the appliance, a hole must be drilled at an angle from the supply point to the fire opening. The distance from the front of the opening to the point at which the hole appears should be measured and the appropriate knock out be removed from the cavity box. Measure distance and remove appropriate knock-out Hole through outer brickwork for entry into rear of appliance FIGURE 11 Hole through inner brickwork, drilled at an angle to align with cavity box 4 Once the gas pipe is routed in to the convector box it should be cut to length to suit connection to the burner unit. The isolating fitting should be removed from the burner unit and be fitted on to the end of the supply pipe. See Figure Solder fittings must not be used underneath the burner unit. 6 Refit the burner unit in the reverse order to that described in Section 3. Before the burner unit is inserted, check tightness of nut at the control valve end of the thermocouple. CAUTION - Do not over-tighten. Also operate the peizo ignition to ensure a spark is present. Reconnect the isolating fitting to the burner unit. 9

Connect this end to the supply pipe Disconnect this end from the burner unit Figure 12 LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE (See Figure 13) Your Ballade Balanced Flue Convector is fitted with a Flame Supervision Device that cuts off the gas supply to your fire if, for any reason, the pilot-light is extinguished. The pilot light heats the probe of the thermocouple and allows gas to flow to the main burner. If, due to pilot failure, the thermocouple cools, no gas will flow to the main burner. If the fire is turned off or the flames go out, wait for AT LEAST 3 MINUTES before attempting to relight. 1 Ensure the gas supply is turned on. If the isolating valve has not been left open by the installer, remove the cap from the isolator fitting and unscrew the plug all the way out. Replace cap making sure that the tab engages with the slot in the top of the plug. Tighten cap securely. 2 Push in and turn the control knob anti-clockwise to the PILOT position. As the knob is turned the piezo unit will be heard to operate and a spark will be produced at the pilot electrode. 3 Hold the knob in for several seconds to purge any air from the system. NOTE: If the pilot does not light, keep the knob depressed in the PILOT position for a short period of time - this will purge any air in the system. Once the air has been purged, repeat step 3 as above. 4 Once the pilot flame is alight, keep the knob depressed for seconds and then release. The pilot flame should remain alight. 5 If the pilot flame goes out, repeat the process, keeping the control knob depressed for a slightly longer period. 6 Depress the control knob slightly and turn anti-clockwise to the MAX position. The main burner should now light. 10

7 Turn the control knob anti-clockwise to the MIN position. The flames will get lower but the main burner should remain alight. 8 To turn the main burner off but leave the pilot running, slightly depress the control knob and turn clockwise to the "PILOT" position. The main burner will go out but the pilot will remain alight. 9 To turn the fire off completely, depress the control knob and turn clockwise to the "OFF" position. IMPORTANT After turning OFF, or if the pilot and appliance go out for any reason, wait 3 minutes before attempting to relight. When the appliance is first lit from cold a great deal of condensation is produced. FIGURE 13 This is quite normal but it is unsightly. THEREFORE WE RECOMMEND THAT THE PILOT BURNER IS LEFT PERMANENTLY ALIGHT DURING THE HEATING SEASON. This will considerably reduce the amount of condensation produced and help eliminate staining and interior paint erosion. 10 GAS SOUNDNESS CHECK Once the correct operation of the controls has been proved a gas soundness test must be carried out in accordance with BS

FITTING THE CERAMIC COMPONENTS WARNING This product uses fuel effect pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF), which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres along with fibrous glass and mineral wool. Excessive exposure to these materials may cause temporary irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract; consequently, it makes sense to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum. CAUTION All the ceramic components are fragile and should be handled with care 1 The burner tray and ceramics are illustrated in Figure 14. Place the rear ceramic in position at the rear of the burner tray. Place the centre ceramic in position in the front of the tray making sure the holes line up with the burner ports. The front ceramic locates behind the coal retainer and in front of the centre ceramic. Rear ceramic Middle ceramic Front ceramic Burner unit FIGURE 14 CAUTION: The coal lay described below must be adhered to. If the coals are not correctly laid the resulting flames may impinge on the front sides and top of the firebox causing deterioration of the paint finish and eventual surface rusting in those areas. FIGURE 15 2 With reference to Figures 15, 16, and 17, lay the coals as follows: - a) Note the triangular flat on the underside of the moulded coal. See Figure 15 b) With reference to Figures 16 & 17, place 5 coals in their seats along the front ceramic with the pointed part of the coal facing rearwards. Place a coal each side of this row 12 Point A (see Fig. 18) Note flat at base of coal Base of coal

to make a total of 7 coals on the front ceramic. c) With reference to Figure 16 & 17, place 4 coals in their seats on the centre ceramic. This time the 'points' should face forward. Place a further coal each side of this row to make a total of 6 coals on the centre ceramic. FIGURE 16 d) With reference to Figure 16 & 17, place 3 coals in their seats against the rear ceramic with their 'points' upwards. Place a further coal each side of this row to make a total of 5. 3 Hold the glass fronted door panel in position and secure with four screws. Ensure that any fingerprints or dirty marks are removed from the glass before it is fixed in place. 4 Fit the outer trim into the position on the frame of the appliance using the four magnets provided. Where a brass trim is being used, ensure that the protective plastic coating is removed before the trim is fitted. Care should be taken not to touch the brass as fingerprints may stain the surface. FIGURE 17 TIMBER FRAMED BUILDINGS 1 If any doubt arises regarding the installation into a timber framed building; guidance can be found in British Gas Document DM2 and DM3 (Available from British Gas). 2 If any further information is required the manufacturer should be contacted. 13

COMMISSIONING BRIEFING THE USER 1 Demonstrate the full operation of the appliance to the user. 2 Explain to the user that for a period of time after the appliance is first used it will give off an odour as the paint cures. 3 Inform the user that all cleaning procedures should be carried out ONLY when the appliance is cold. 4 Leave these instructions, and the user's instructions, with the user. 5 Advise the importance of having the appliance serviced on an annual basis. 14

USERS GUIDE USEFUL TIPS & RECOMMENDATIONS Once your fire has been fitted, the following recommendations are made to ensure you enjoy the best results from your purchase; 1 The installation of this appliance must be carried out by a qualified installer and in accordance with the requirements of the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 2 As with any fire, certain components will become hot in use, e.g. the decorative front fret. Care should be exercised when using the control of the appliance when it is hot. We also recommend that a fireguard, conforming to BS 6539 or BS 6778, be fitted for the protection of young children, the elderly or infirm. 3 When new, the ceramic coals may produce a slight odour, but this will completely vanish after a few hours of use. 4 Never leave the house unattended, with the fire alight, for long periods. 5 To obtain the best results from your fire we recommend that the fire be serviced. In order that the terms and conditions of your warranty (see page 18) are met, this must be undertaken annually and the Service Engineer must complete the Service Record. (Page 19) 6 These instructions are provided to assist you to operate the fire correctly and should be kept in a safe place. CLEANING YOUR BALANCED FLUE CONVECTOR 1 Ensure that the fire is cold before undertaking any cleaning. Remember the heat is retained for some time after the fire is switched off. In normal use, your convector requires only minimal cleaning. 2 The trim on the front of the fire is held in place with magnets. Should you wish to clean the trim, simply pull it off of the fire, clean using a slightly dampened cloth and then replace, ensuring that the magnets are positioned correctly. (Ensure that the fire is cold before carrying out this procedure) DO NOT USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS. 15

SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE 1 BEFORE ANY SERVICING IS CARRIED OUT ENSURE THE GAS SUPPLY TO THE APPLIANCE IS TURNED OFF. AFTER REFITTING THE APPLIANCE, CHECK FOR GAS SOUNDNESS. WARNING This product uses fuel effect pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF), which are man-made vitreous silicate fibres along with fibrous glass and mineral wool. Excessive exposure to these materials may cause temporary irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract, consequently, it makes sense to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum. CAUTION All the ceramic components are fragile and should be handled with care. 2 After removing the glass door panel the coals and ceramics should be taken off the fire and all unwanted debris and soot removed from the ceramics and burners, this can be done by using a vacuum cleaner. The burner ports should be thoroughly cleaned. 3 When carrying out servicing work, care must be taken to avoid damage to the gaskets on the appliance. Should excessive damage occur, gaskets should be replaced. Only original manufacturers gaskets may be used. 4 The coals must treated gently. Remove each one by hand and clean with a soft brush. 5 Badly damaged coals should be replaced. Replacement coals are available from our stockists. 6 Check that there is no impairment to the electrode spark or pilot burner. 7 Inspect the HT lead to ensure it is sound. Should it appear unsound, it should be replaced. Only the original manufacturers part can be used for this purpose. The lead should be pulled off the electrode on the pilot assembly and be disconnected from the plug on connector by sliding off the rubber sleeve and unplugging the two connectors. The replacement should be fitted in reverse order. The rubber sleeve must be refitted correctly or shorting may occur, preventing a correct spark from being produced at the electrode. 8 Check that the pilot flame is satisfactory. If this is not the case remove and clean. If the flame is still unsatisfactory replace the pilot burner. 9 Rebuild the coal lay as described on pages 12 and Make final adjustment to coals to obtain a satisfactory visual effect. 11 Make sure that that the terminal and flue-way are clear. 12 Replace the glass door panel and secure with four screws. 16

WATER MARKING INSIDE THE FIREBOX Due to the fact that the interior of this balanced flue appliance is directly exposed to outside conditions and that burning gas produces large amounts of water vapour, rust marks may appear within the firebox. Whilst this can detract from the appearance of the fire it is not particularly harmful as the firebox is constructed of heavy gauge steel. During the annual service these marks can easily be rubbed down and painted over using an aerosol can version of the original paint available from the stockist where the appliance was purchased.
