2 WARNINGS AND CAUTIONS This product is an electrical heating appliance, and as such can present a fire or shock hazard if not installed or used properly. Please follow these instructions for the installation of your soil warming solution. 1. Installation and use of this product must be conducted in accordance with any applicable local or national electrical code. 2. Only use this product with components, connection and control devices approved by HeatSafe. Failure to do so will invalidate the product warranty and could pose a safety risk. 3. The cable jacket must not be cut, nicked, or damaged in any way, therefore: Do not use wire or clamps to secure the cable in your soil bed; always use the fixing means provided in your shipment. Inspect the cable before installation for any damage that may have occurred during packaging or shipping. 4. Contact HeatSafe if there is any question about the integrity of the heating cable or any of the additional components. 5. Never attempt to repair a damaged cable or connection. Contact HeatSafe for more information and instructions. 6. Do not use for any purpose other than soil warming unless authorized to do so by HeatSafe in writing. 7. Only use for the 120V Electrical Outlet. 8. Ground-fault protection is required for each circuit; this is provided by the included GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) 9. Disconnect all power circuits before installing, servicing or adjusting thermostat set point. Deactivate the appropriate circuit breaker if possible. 10. Keep ends of trace heating cables and kit components dry before and during installation. 11. The presence of trace heating shall be made evident by the posting of caution signs or marking where clearly visible. Please use the included adhesive warning labels for this purpose. 3 COMPONENT LIST HEATING CABLES: Dark Grey in cooler and flat in profile, the cables come preterminated with end seal at one end (shown) and a power plug or socket for attachment to power cables or a thermostat. POWER LEAD/GFI ASSEMBLY and EXTENSION CABLE: Round cable, white in color. Incorporating an inline GFI (white plastic enclosure) terminating via a power supply plug. The remote cable end is fitted with a connector for electrical connection to the heating circuit or an additional extension length, which also will include pre-installed modular connections. THERMOSTATIC CONTROL- An adjustable thermostat AT-A is available if requested during the Solution Designer. This provides additional energy efficiency and control of the soil temperature for different applications or plants. Horticultural Soil Warming Installation Guide Page 3 of 7

4 PRE INSTALLATION PROCEDURES 1. Inspect ALL received components for signs of damage or defect Ensure there are no cuts, nicks, or damage to any of the heating or power cables and that the outer insulation is in good condition Check plugs, sockets and junction boxes (if any) are intact, free from damage and in good condition. 2. Check the area to be heated for any rocks, debris or other hazards that may damage the heating cable once installed. 3. Place a 50mm (2 ) layer of fine sand to serve as a base for the heating cable and attachment strips. This sand layer will provide improved thermal transfer and help to maintain proper soil temperature. 4. It is recommended to use a Hardware Cloth or Wire Mesh to make it easier to secure heating cable in the sand or soil. Cut this to the appropriate size before installation. 5. It is recommended to use cable ties (zip ties) to connect heating cable to the wire mesh. 6. Dig the area to be heated to an appropriate depth (4 minimum) Horticultural Soil Warming Installation Guide Page 4 of 7

5 HEATING CABLE INSTALLATION 1. Run the heating cable edge and lengthwise in a zigzag pattern along your pre-cut hardware cloth or wire mesh. Plan your layout so that the entire are to be heated will be covered with heating cable. 2. Use zip-ties to attach at approximately 30cm 60cm (12 24 ) intervals. More Zip ties may be used before at the midpoint and after bends to ensure a secure attachment. a. Be Careful not to cinch the zip ties to close the heating cable, they should be secure but not tight. b. Once attached zip ties ends should be cut off using a knife or scissors. 3. When reaching the end of the area to be heated, bend the heating cable and route it in the reverse direction with approximately 5cm (2 ) to 15cm (6 ) spacing. Continue with this procedure until the entire length of heating cable is used and the entire area to be heated is covered. 3. The End Seal for the heating cable may be covered in the soil and also attached to the hardware cloth, however, leave enough room at the socket end of the heating cable to reach out of the soil and leave enough slack to allow proper positioning and connection to the thermostat box. 6 CONNECTION PROCEDURES WITH ADJUSTABLE THERMOSTAT 1. Ensure that your power supply plug is NOT CONNECTED to an outlet. 2. If you have a power extension cord, this may be attached between the GFI and thermostat POWER IN socket at the 9 O clock position on the AT/A Box. Please note that the plug socket system will only allow connection in one direction to maintain proper polarity and electrical safety. Fully screw down the protective caps to secure the extension cord connections. 3. Mount the AT-A Thermostat at a location of your choice so that the thermostat probe can be placed directly into the soil. This should be placed into the ground 5cm (2 ) away from any heating cable to provide proper temperature reading. This position may be adjusted later as desired. 4. Ensure that the power cable is NOT connected to the power supply outlet. 5. Connect the POWER LEAD plug to the POWER IN socket of the AT-A Thermostat Box. Fully screw down the protective cap. 6. Connect the HEATING CABLE plug to the POWER OUT socket of the AT-A Thermostat Box. Fully screw down the protective cap. Horticultural Soil Warming Installation Guide Page 6 of 7

7 SURFACE FINISHING AND SYSTEM ACTIVATION 1. Cover the heating cable same fine sand used to create the base layer. (Optional, you may also bury the heating cable directly in soil) 2. Connect the POWER LEAD to your power supply outlet. Please note that depending on your thermostat setting, the heating circuit may not activate until an appropriately cold temperature occurs. 3. Test the RCD by depressing the TEST Button, check that the RCD s activation light turns off indicating that the system is disconnected. Reset the circuit by pressing the RESET button. 4. Adjustable Thermostat (AT/A) temperature may be adjusted using the following procedure: a. Disconnect the Power Supply unit and GFI from the Outlet. b. Open the AT/A outer box using a flat head screwdriver c. Carefully remove the cover, be careful not to put the red Load On wires that are connected to the top cover of the AT/A box. You may pull the LED light bulb from it s housing to allow easier access. d. Set the desired temperature. Note the scale is in Celsius (0 C to 40 C) and the set point is at the 9 O clock position. e. Reconnect the Load On LED light bulb into it s housing f. Close the top cover and screw down with a flat head screwdriver. Horticultural Soil Warming Installation Guide Page 7 of 7
