Merry Maids # 372/373/458/946/947 J.R. Nichols Company, Inc New Employee Training Day 3 Script Module 5 Kitchens, Laundry and Utility Rooms Slide 1 Today you will learn how to clean a kitchen and laundry room. Slide 2 The kitchen and laundry room are often close by but may be in different parts of a home. Slide 3 You will use the six basic steps to clean kitchen. In addition, you ll learn two additional steps. Major appliances is the first new step that comes before glass or mirrors. Sink is the second new step after glass or mirrors. Slide 4 Note to trainer: Say aloud the eight steps to cleaning a kitchen. Then have the trainee say the steps with you. Finally, have the trainee say the steps alone. Give the trainee time to look at the steps and try to learn them. Slides 5-10 Note to trainer: Make sure the trainee correctly identifies the missing steps. Slide 11 Note to trainer: Instead of telling a trainee how to clean items already discussed in previous modules, have the trainee share this information with you. Add appropriate comments as necessary. Slide 12 Pick up and straighten in a kitchen might include rinsing dirty dishes left in a sink and stacking them on the counter. After cleaning the sink, the dishes should be placed back in the sink. Slide 13 Check the light switch plates in a kitchen for any fingerprints or smudges. You may find many fingerprints in a kitchen. Remember to wear gloves when cleaning a kitchen.

Slide 14 Kitchens usually have many cabinets. Use a green microfiber cloth to dust the wood. Be sure to dust any wood inserts, especially on the bottom. If a handle on a cabinet is dirty, use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner to clean it. Slide 15 Wipe a kitchen countertop using a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. A Little Chizler can be used to lift dried-on food. Be sure to lift up any item on the counter, such as a canister or cookie jar, and wipe the item as well as under it. Slide 16 Pull out any small appliance, such as a blender, toaster, or coffeemaker, to clean the counter underneath it. Unplug the small appliance and then wipe it off as well (except a coffeemaker which may have a timer). Slide 17 A dining table is often found in a kitchen. Remember to dust not just the top but also the sides and legs. Use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner to remove water marks or dried-on food. A Little Chizler also can lift dried-on food, but be careful not to scratch a wood surface. Slides Note to trainer: Instead of telling a trainee how to clean items already discussed in previous modules, have the trainee share this information with you. Add appropriate comments as necessary. Slide 22 Major appliances is the fourth step to cleaning a kitchen. A stove is the one the major appliances you will clean. You ll use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. If grease is present, you need Grease cleaner. To remove dried-on food, you may need a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge or the Little Chizler. Slide 23 Start at the top by wiping the stove hood with Multi-Surface cleaner. For grease buildup, use Grease cleaner. Slide 24 Wipe stove knobs but make sure you leave them in the off position. If the knobs can be easily removed, take them off to wipe them better.

Slide 25 Clean the stove top next. Use Multi-Surface cleaner and a yellow microfiber cloth to wipe. If heavy grease buildup is present, you may need Grease cleaner. But don t leave Grease cleaner on any surface too long before wiping it off or damage may occur. Avoid spraying Grease cleaner on any porous surface. Check the drip pans for spills. Wipe these out with a yellow cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. If necessary, use Grease cleaner with a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge or the Little Chizler to remove dried-on food. Slide 26 Now clean the front of the oven. Pay special attention to the oven handle as it often has fingerprints. Slide 27 A refrigerator/freezer is another major appliance in a kitchen. Use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner to wipe it. You may need a safety ladder to clean the top of a refrigerator. Slide 28 Wipe the top of the refrigerator whenever possible. Use a safety ladder to reach it. Sometimes there will be items stored on top of the refrigerator. Wipe around these and be careful not to knock them off. Slide 29 Next wipe the front of the refrigerator. Often photos, notes, and other papers are posted here. If there are only a few items, carefully remove them, wipe the refrigerator front, and then place the items back in their original location. If too many items, then wipe around them. Slide 30 Pay special attention to the refrigerator handles. You ll often find fingerprints or dried food there. Many refrigerators have a water and ice dispenser built into the door. Wipe this area as well, especially the tray. Slide 31 Don t forget to wipe the vents at the bottom of the refrigerator. These are often overlooked and can get very dirty. Slide 32 Be sure to wipe the front of a dishwasher, trash compactor, or any other major appliance found under a countertop.

Slide 33 A microwave is a major appliance we open to clean inside. If the microwave is up high, put on eye protection before spraying. Use a yellow microfiber cloth with Multi-Surface cleaner. For heavy grease buildup, use Grease cleaner. A microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge or Little Chizler can help lift dried-on food. Don t forget to check the roof as well as the corners. Lift up a removable turntable and clean underneath it. Slide 34 After cleaning the inside of a microwave, wipe the outside. Slide 35 Often the laundry room is next to the kitchen, but it could be near the bedrooms and even on a different level than the kitchen. Wipe the outside of a washer with a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. Also, lift the lid and wipe the inside lid as well as the top lip. Wipe the outside of a dryer like you wipe a washer. Slide 36 How would you clean a washer? Slide 37 (Answer may include to wipe the outside with a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi- Surface cleaner. Could also mention to lift the lid and wipe the inside lid as well as the top lip.) Slide 38 How would you clean a stove? Slide 39 (Answer may include to wipe the stove hood, stove knobs, stove top, drip pans, front of the oven, and oven handle. Could also mention to use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. If grease is present, use Grease cleaner. But don t leave Grease cleaner on any surface too long before wiping it off or damage may occur. Avoid spraying Grease cleaner on any porous surface. To remove dried-on food, you may need a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge or the Little Chizler.) Slide 40 How would you clean a ceiling fan with light fixture? Slide 41 (Answer may include to use a microfiber duster. Could also mention to dust not only the bottom of fan blades but the top as well as the motor. Wear eye protection to keep from getting dust in your eyes. You may need a safety ladder to reach high areas.)

Slide 42 How would you clean a refrigerator/freezer? Slide 43 (Answer may include to use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner to wipe it. Wipe the top of the refrigerator whenever possible. Be careful not to knock any items off. Wipe the front of the refrigerator, refrigerator handles, water and ice dispenser, and the vents at the bottom of the refrigerator. Could also mention you may need a safety ladder to clean the top of the refrigerator. If there are only a few items posted on the front of a refrigerator, carefully remove them, wipe the front, and then place the items back in their original location. If too many items, then wipe around them. Slide 44 The only window we clean in a home (unless a special request) is the window above the kitchen sink. Use a blue microfiber cloth and Glass cleaner to wipe it. Spray the glass rather than the blue cloth to avoid streaks. Slide 45 Sometimes you ll find a glass tabletop in a kitchen. Wipe the top as you would any glass. Remember to wipe the bottom of the glass as well. Use the Little Chizler to lift off driedon food. Don t forget to dust with legs of the table with a green microfiber cloth. Slide 46 You may find a hutch or china cabinet in a kitchen with both wood and glass surfaces. While glass is the fifth step in a kitchen, you would clean the hutch in the third step. After dusting the wood surfaces with a green microfiber cloth, then clean the glass. Never open a china cabinet to clean inside. Slide 47 Clean the inside of a glass entry door every time. If weather permits, also clean the outside glass. You can more easily see missed streaks and spots by bending down and looking at the glass from an angle rather than straight across. To quickly find streaks, clean one side of the glass with an up-and-down motion and the other side with a left-toright motion. Slide 48 Sink is the sixth step in cleaning a kitchen. To clean a sink, you ll need a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. You also may use a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge, or Scrub N Shine to remove heavy build-up. A Little Chizler can also be used to remove dried-on food or to clean around fixtures. A grout brush also works great as well. You ll use plenty of warm water to rinse the sink.

Slide 49 The first thing to do when cleaning a sink is to scrub it. Use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. For stubborn stains, use a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge, a little Scrub N Shine, and warm water. Use the white side of the sponge for more scrubbing power. The Little Chizler or grout brush can be used for cleaning the drain area and around the base of the fixtures where the knobs and faucet attach to the sink. Slide 50 Be sure to rinse the sink thoroughly to remove any product or loose dirt. Slide 51 Next buff the fixtures with a yellow microfiber cloth. You may need to first rinse and wring out the yellow cloth. Make sure you leave no water spots. Slide 52 Lastly, dry the sink. Remember to place any dirty dishes stacked on the counter back in the sink. Slide 53 How would you clean a window above a kitchen sink? Slide 54 (Answer may include to use a blue microfiber cloth and Glass cleaner. Could also mention this is only window cleaned in a home - unless a special request.) Slide 55 How would you clean a sink? Slide 56 (Answer may include to use a yellow microfiber cloth and Multi-Surface cleaner. Scrub the sink, rinse the sink, buff the fixtures, and dry the sink. Could also mention to use a microfiber scrubber cloth, yellow sponge, or a little Scrub N Shine to remove heavy build-up. A Little Chizler and grout brush can also be used to remove dried-on food or to clean around the drain area or fixtures.) Slide 57 Something new added to customer pleasing in a kitchen is v-folding paper towels. First take the upper corner and fold it down to the bottom edge. Then take the bottom point

and fold it up to the top edge. You should now have a v-fold. To keep the fold in place, add a gold Merry Maids seal. When training in a home, you ll learn how easy it is to do. Slide 58 Note to trainer: Let the trainee explain this slide which was covered in previous modules. Sometimes the trashcan in the kitchen is found under the sink or inside a pantry. After the trash from the whole house is collected, it is often placed just outside the kitchen in a garage or carport. Slide 59 The last step in any room is upholstery and floor. If there are upholstered chairs in the kitchen, you ll need to vacuum them with a Portapower or ProTeam vacuum and the upholstery attachment. Slides Note to trainer: Let the trainee explain these slides which was covered in previous modules. Slide 63 Even if a kitchen is too large to wash on hands and knees, you ll still wash on your knees the food preparation area, around the table, underneath the cabinet ledges, and in the corners of the room. These areas are usually the dirtiest and may not be cleaned well using only a Sh-mop. Slide 67 How would you wash a floor on hands and knees? Slide 68 Note to trainer: The trainee should be able to clearly explain how to wash a floor. If incomplete or incorrect, take more time to review. Slide 69 How would you v-fold paper towels? Slide 70 (Answer may include to take the upper corner and fold it down to the bottom edge. Then take the bottom point and fold it up to the top edge. Could also mention to add a gold Merry Maids seal to keep the fold in place.) Slide 71 How would you wash a floor with a Sh-mop?

Slide 72 Note to trainer: The trainee should be able to clearly explain how to wash a floor. If incomplete or incorrect, take more time to review.
