2 control and performance in both constant volume and variable air volume air handlers. AirManager improves comfort levels AirManager constantly monitors and compares conditions, set points, and schedules. It plans ahead and self tunes its control routines to assure the most consistent comfort and optimum air quality. A Temperature Compensated Start function is provided to bring the unoccupied space to an occupied period set point. AirManager will control air handler operation as economically as possible to assure comfortable conditions when occupants arrive. AirManager operates air handlers economically and efficiently AirManager monitors indoor and outdoor temperatures, humidity levels, and scheduling information to determine and initiate the best, most economical occupied and unoccupied free cooling solutions. Indoor air quality AirManager can respond to input from a variety of sensors (which detect CO 2 or volatile organic compounds) to maintain ventilation requirements. At the start of each unoccupied period, AirManager provides an automatic drying cycle for cooling coils, which deters mold and bacteria growth. This can help prevent odors from entering into the building air. In all modes, AirManager provides intelligent operation to eliminate indoor humidity problems. Occupant and building safety AirManager provides a Fire/Smoke Shutdown function which will shut down all fan and unit operation in response to smoke or fire detection systems. This deters smoke from being ventilated through the building and keeps outside air away from a fire. AirManager can also activate a local alarm and report an alarm condition through communication to a Carrier user interface. This allows a fast response to any potentially hazardous conditions. Additionally, AirManager defends your system and building with a variety of safety functions which protect against freezing coils, excessive humidity, and other problems. Universal control for many air handler applications AirManager is a near universal control that is easily connected to virtually any central station air handler. New or previously installed, Carrier (39T, 39L, 39NC) or any other brand, AirManager will be compatible with any application. AirManager can be used in network or stand-alone systems. AirManager is 100% compatible with the Carrier Comfort Network. It is also a free-standing solution, providing remarkably adept operating management. AirManager is even compatible with third-party control systems. Rugged, compact enclosure AirManager s housing is remarkably compact, yet it incorporates transformers, relays, circuit breakers, and terminal blocks. With its remotemounting capability, you can mount this rugged system in an area to suit your convenience. The entire enclosure is listed and labeled by ETL to comply with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Standard 873. A complete solution AirManager eliminates hidden costs by bringing key control components together into a single, prewired enclosure. All accessories (except optional CO 2 sensors) are powered by the standard transformers in the control unit. Parts sourcing and acquisition, installation labor, and troubleshooting are minimized. 6 Accessories (cont) Wall mounted space humidity sensor The space humidity sensor is used to sense the humidity in the conditioned area and can also be used for dehumidification control. The humidity sensor has a range of 10 to 90% relative humidity with an accuracy of ± 3%. The sensor is a 2-wire, 4 to 20 ma output signal transducer, that is converted to a 2 to 10 vdc input signal to the AirManager control. The sensor uses bulk polymer resistance technology, which eliminates the effect of surface contamination and helps maintain sensor accuracy for long periods of time. The wall mounted humidity sensor is enclosed in a decorative plastic case, suitable for mounting in the conditioned area. Duct mounted humidity sensor The return duct humidity sensor is used to sense the humidity in the conditioned area and can also be used for dehumidification control. The humidity sensor has a range of 10 to 90% relative humidity with an accuracy of ± 3%. The sensor is a 2-wire, 4 to 20 ma output signal transducer, that is converted to a 2 to 10 vdc input signal to the AirManager control. The sensor uses bulk polymer resistance technology, which eliminates the effect of surface contamination and helps maintain sensor accuracy for long periods of time. The duct mounted humidity sensor is enclosed in a junction box with the sensing element at the end of a 9-in. probe. Electric heat control/two-position minimum outdoor air damper control The control kit is required for electric heat and two-position damper applications. The package contains 2 SPDT (single-pole, double throw) relays. The relay provides two sets of contacts (one normally open, one normally closed). The relays are used to operate the electric heater control circuits in two stages or to operate a twoposition minimum outdoor air damper actuator. DX cooling coil control The DX (direct expansion) Cooling Control package consists of 2 control relays and an outdoor air temperature sensor. The package is required for DX cooling control applications. The control relays are used to operate the cooling control circuits in 2 stages. The outdoor air temperature sensor is used in conjuction with the control to monitor outside air temperature and lockout the DX cooling when the outdoor air temperature falls below the lockout set point. Filter status kit The filter status kit includes a differential pressure switch, 6 ft of flame-retardant tubing, and 2 tubing connectors. The differential status switch monitors the pressure drop across the filter and returns a CLEAN/ DIRTY signal to the AirManager control. The differential switch has a range of 0.05 to 0.50 in. wg. Coil freeze protection A low temperature thermostat is used to protect the coil from freezing by detecting low temperatures. When any 1 foot section of the thermostat detects a low temperature, the AirManager control will stop the fan and close the outdoor air damper. One low temperature thermostat is used for coil face areas of up to 45 sq. ft. A minimum of one thermostat is required for each coil of a split coil unit. Multiple thermostats can be used with one AirManager control. The low temperature thermostat has a range of 34 to 60 F and is factory set at 35 F. Inlet guide vane (IGV) actuators All IGV actuators consist of an electrically reversible motor and gear train mounted in a package designed to be directly coupled to the IGV jackshaft. Each actuator can stop, hold its position at any point in the stroke, and move the inlet guide vanes in either direction. Actuators are available in two sizes: a 133 in./lb actuator for jackshaft sizes from to in. and a 266 in./lb actuator for jackshafts sizes from to in. (for applications with higher static pressures). Typically, for Carrier 39 series units, size 06 through 26 utilize a single 133 in./lb actuator, and all large units through size 92 use a single 266 in./lb actuator. Mixed air damper (MAD) actuators The MAD actuator consists of an electrically reversible constant speed motor, gear train, and a mechanical spring return mechanism, mounted in a package designed to be directly coupled to a damper jackshaft (0.75 to 1.05-in. OD). Each actuator comes equipped with 16 ft of plenum rated cable, factory connected to the actuator. Each actuator can stop, hold its position at any point in the stroke, and move the damper in either direction. The actuator provides 133 in./lb of torque and spring return for use with all dampers. Multiple actuators are used for large damper assemblies. Up to six actuators may be used with a single AirManager control. Typically, for Carrier 39L, 39T, and 39NC units, size 03 through 32 utilize a single 133 in./lb actuator and all large units through size 92 use two actuators. For 39NC units, with vertical dampers (EMB1 sections), two actuators (1 for EXH and 1 for MAD) are used for sizes up to size 21. Three actuators are required on sizes (1 EXH and 2 MAD). Sizes 61 and 74 require 4 actuators (2 EXH and 2 MAD). Size 92 requires 6 actuators (2 EXH, 2 OAD, and 2 RAD). Mixed air damper control The mixed air damper control includes a 24-ft, 10 Kohm multiple thermistor averaging probe, a 5 Kohm thermistor outdoor air sensor, and an outdoor air enthalpy switch. The mixed air damper control adjusts modulating outside air, return air, and exhaust air dampers. When outside air conditions are unsuitable for cooling or the system is in heating mode, the dampers are held to a minimum outside air percentage. When outside air conditions are suitable for cooling, the mixed air dampers are modulated to maintain the space temperature (CV) or supply air temperature (VAV) in an effort to minimize the need for mechanical cooling. Differential enthalpy control (used with mixed air damper control) When added to the mixed air damper control, the differential enthalpy control compares the enthalpy of the return air stream with the outdoor air in order to determine if the outdoor air is suitable for cooling before modulating the mixed air damper. The package consists of a solid-state enthalpy controller with an enthalpy sensor mounted for measuring the outdoor air. A solid-state return air enthalpy sensor, suitable mounting plate, and hardware is also provided for installation into the return air duct. Output converter The output converter provides the capability to convert the tri-state floating point output of the AirManager control to an industry standard 4 to 20 ma analog output signal. The output converter is used to provide two speed motor control for CV applications, using a variable frequency drive. 6

7 Indoor air quality (IAQ) CO 2 sensor The indoor air quality sensor measures the amount of CO 2 present in the air in ppm. The amount of outside air being sent to the space is increased if the reading is above the configured set point. Three types of IAQ sensors are available: duct mount, wall mount, and wall mount with LED (light-emitting diode) display. IAQ sensor calibration kit The IAQ sensor calibration kit contains everything needed to calibrate the IAQ sensor. The kit contains: IAQ sensor calibration software, computer connection cable, calibration blanket, bottle of N 2 gas, bottle of CO 2 gas, pressure regulator, tubes, and clips. IAQ sensor software interface program The IAQ sensor is factory set for an alarm at 1000 ppm of CO 2. The setting can only be changed through the use of the IAQ sensor software interface program. The accessory also comes with a computer connection cable and an operation manual. Linkage thermostat The programmable linkage thermostat accessory package is separately shipped for field installation. The package contains a programmable thermostat with an integral timeclock, a thermostat power supply, and a 24-vac transformer. The thermostat provides unit scheduling for occupancy and allows user defined set points to be programmed for occupied and unoccupied periods. The thermostat also contains a space temperature sensor for local temperature measurement. The thermostat display allows the user to monitor unit operation locally in the space. The liquid crystal display (LCD) shows the unit operating mode, current set point, local space temperature, and time. Steam/water valve accessory packages Steam and water valve assemblies are shipped separately for field installation. All factory-supplied valves are fully modulating and capable of being positioned at any point within the travel range of the valve. All valve assemblies have electrically powered actuators. Each actuator has external leads for field wiring. The actuators have 24 vac power wires and a termination box suitable for conduit connection. Each actuator operates its valve through a linear stroke. Valve selections provide both spring return and non-spring return options. On spring return types, if power is lost, a return spring reverses the stroke and returns the valve stem to the normal position. For non-spring return types, if power is lost, the valve holds the last position until power is restored. 7

9 Controls Operating sequence Constant volume and variable air volume units Two-position damper control Two-position damper control opens or closes field-supplied and installed twoposition outdoor-air dampers to provide minimum outdoor air ventilation. If the supply fan is OFF, the damper is closed. If the supply fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control determines if the unit is in the Occupied mode. If unit is in the Occupied mode, the dampers open. If unit is in the Unoccupied mode, the dampers remain closed. Filter status This control monitors the differential pressure between the upstream and downstream side of a filter. When the filter becomes dirty or needs to be replaced, the airflow switches send a discrete signal to the Comfort System AirManager control. This, in turn, generates an alarm locally or at Building Supervisor. Fan control The supply fan is started or stopped based on a network occupancy schedule, temperature compensated start, unoccupied free cooling, unoccupied heating, unoccupied cooling, timed override, or the remote contact input. The start of an occupied period is determined by either the network occupancy schedule, temperature compensated start, or the remote contact input. If temperature compensated start is not used, the supply fan starts at the occupied time entered in the network occupancy schedule or when the remote contact input is closed. If temperature compensated start is selected, the fan starts at the calculated start time. The fan stops at the unoccupied time entered in the occupancy schedule. (Timed override may be used to provide an occupied period from between 1 to 4 hours.) During the unoccupied period, whenever the space temperature (CV) or return air-temperature (VAV) falls at least 1 degree below the unoccupied heating set point or rises at least 1 degree above the unoccupied cooling set point, the supply fan energizes and runs until the space temperature returns to within the required limits. The supply fan can also run during the unoccupied period when the unit is in the Unoccupied Free Cooling mode to pre-cool the space prior to the Occupied period. Whenever the control determines that the fan is no longer required to operate, such as when transitioning into or operating during an unoccupied period, the control determines if the previous operating mode provided cooling. If so, the control first disables any mechanical cooling, then continues to operate the fan for a period of time in order to evaporate the condensate from the cooling coil fins and reduce the supply duct humidity level. Unoccupied free cool Unoccupied free cooling is used to start the supply fan to precool the building s interior using outside air. This delays the need for mechanical cooling when the system enters the Occupied mode. The system determines if the outside conditions (temperature and enthalpy) are suitable for outside cooling. If conditions are suitable and cooling is necessary, the supply fan is energized and the dampers modulate open. Once the space has been sufficiently cooled, the fan stops. If the outside air conditions are not suitable, the fan remains OFF. The unit must be equipped with mixed-air dampers to provide unoccupied free cooling. Unoccupied free cooling can be provided whenever the unit is in unoccupied mode, conditions are suitable, and the unoccupied free cooling feature has been selected. Indoor-air quality (IAQ) This function maintains the correct occupied ventilation rate using CO2 as an indicator of occupancy level or controls the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other indoor air pollutants by modulating the mixed air dampers. Varying quantities of outdoor air are admitted during the Occupied period to maintain the ventilation rate at a set point which ensures the pollutant level does not exceed the configured set point of the air-quality (AQ) sensor. The sensor can be either duct-mounted in the return air duct or mounted within the conditioned space. The sensor will be used to continuously monitor the pollutant level during occupied periods. During the unoccupied period, the damper position is not affected by the IAQ control. During the occupied period, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the AQ sensor input and compares it to the configured set point. The Comfort System AirManager control then calculates the minimum damper position to maintain the set point. If no other control is attempting to adjust the dampers to a more fully open position than the IAQ control, the damper is adjusted to the position determined by the IAQ control. Otherwise, the damper is positioned by the superseding control routine or at its configured minimum position. IAQ System Protection To protect against freezing coils in cold climates or excessively high space temperature and humidity in warm climates, the Comfort System AirManager control provides four features which override or modify the IAQ control operation. A user-adjustable maximum outdoor air percentage can be used to limit the maximum outdoor air intake during IAQ control operation. Another user-configurable selection is Mixed-Air Temperature Protection. The Mixed-Air Temperature Protection can be used to automatically limit the damper position based on outdoor air conditions, so that the mixed-air temperature is maintained above 48 F automatically. If the unit is equipped with coil-type modulating heat (including face and bypass coil heating), the Comfort System AirManager control will provide supply-air tempering during IAQ operation when additional outside air required by the IAQ control causes the supply-air temperature to drop. The control prevents the supply-air temperature from falling below the supply-air temperature set point. Space temperature and excessive space humidity protection are additionally provided. This function will temporarily suspend IAQ control operation until the space temperature and humidity conditions return to normal levels. Temperature compensated start Temperature Compensated Start is used to heat up or cool down the space prior to occupancy. The space temperature will reach the occupied set point at time of occupancy. The Comfort System AirManager control uses space temperature, 9

10 Controls (cont) occupied set point, and a K factor in minutes/degrees to calculate a start time offset, which is the time in minutes that the system should be started in advance of the occupied time. NOTE: The programmable thermostat option or Terminal System Manager (TSM) is required for the temperature compensated start feature. Fire/smoke shutdown Fire/Smoke Shutdown is used to stop the unit supply and return fan whenever a fieldsupplied and installed fire/smoke sensor connected to the input is energized. The status of the input is continuously monitored by the Comfort System AirManager control. If the fan is operating, it is immediately stopped by the Comfort System AirManager control when an alarm condition is detected. The alarm can be annunciated locally at the alarm output as well as repeated through the network to a Building Supervisor. Constant volume units only Heating coil control The heating coil control adjusts the steam or hot water valve. The valve is modulated to prevent the space temperature from falling below the desired heating set point. If the supply fan is OFF, the heating valve is modulated to maintain a desired minimum duct temperature (fan off value). If the fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space sensor and computes the supply-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature and the heating coil valve modulates to the required position. For those systems where the heating coil is located downstream from the cooling coil, if dehumidification is being provided by the cooling coil control and Reheat has been selected, the valve is modulated in order to maintain the supply-air temperature above a user-configured temperature set point. Face and bypass heating coil control The heating coil control is used to position a set of face and bypass dampers immediately upstream of a steam or hot water heating coil. The damper set is modulated to prevent the space temperature from falling below the desired heating set point. If the fan is off, the dampers are positioned to the full bypass position and the heating control valve is closed. To maintain the minimum desired duct temperature (fan off valve) while the fan is OFF, the heating valve is opened as necessary. If the fan is on, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature sensor and computes the supply-air temperature required to satisfy the desired set point. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature and the face and bypass damper set is modulated to the required position. The heating valve is opened whenever the damper set moves away from the full bypass position. For those systems where the heating coil is located downstream from the cooling coil, if dehumidification is being provided by the cooling coil control and Reheat has been selected, the damper set is modulated in order to maintain the supply-air temperature above a user-configured leavingair temperature. Chilled water coil cooling control The cooling coil control adjusts the chilled water valve. The valve is modulated to prevent space temperature from exceeding the desired cooling set point. The valve remains closed if the space temperature is below the set point or the supply fan is OFF. If the fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the humidity sensor (optional) and compares the value to the high humidity limit. If the humidity is higher than the high humidity limit, the chilled water valve fully opens. If the humidity is below the high humidity limit, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature sensor and computes the supply-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature and the chilled water valve modulates to the position required to maintain desired conditions. Face and bypass cooling coil control The cooling coil control is used to position a set of face and bypass dampers immediately upstream of a chilled water cooling coil. The damper set is modulated to prevent the space temperature from exceeding the desired cooling set point. If the fan is off, the dampers are positioned to the full bypass position and the chilled water control valve is closed. If the fan is on, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the humidity sensor (optional) and compares the value to the high-humidty limit. If the humidity value exceeds the set point, the damper set modulates to the full face position and the chilled water valve is opened. If the humidity is below the high humidity limit, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature and calculates the supply-air temperature required to satisfy the desired set point. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature (read from the sensor) and the face and bypass damper set is modulated to the required position. The cooling valve is open whenever the damper set moves away from the full bypass position. Direct expansion cooling control The direct expansion (DX) cooling control regulates the DX cooling system. The DX cooling stages are energized and deenergized to prevent the space temperature from exceeding the desired set point. The stages remain off if the space temperature is below the set point or the supply fan is OFF. If the supply fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the humidity sensor (if supplied) and compares the value to the high humidity limit. If the humidity is higher than the high humidity limit, the DX cooling stages are energized as required to provide maximum dehumidification while also protecting against coil freezing. If the humidity is below the limit, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature sensor and computes the number of stages required to satisfy conditions. 10

11 Once the required number of stages have been calculated, the DX cooling stages are energized to maintain the desired conditions. Mixed-air damper control The mixed-air damper control adjusts modulating outside-air, return-air, and exhaustair dampers. When outside air conditions are unsuitable for atmospheric cooling, the dampers are held to an adjustable minimum outside air percentage. When outside air conditions are suitable for atmospheric cooling, the mixed-air dampers are modulated to maintain the space temperature midway between the heating and cooling set points in an effort to minimize the need for heating or mechanical cooling. The damper set point is automatically calculated from the desired set points. If the supply fan is OFF or operating for unoccupied heating, the mixed-air dampers are kept closed to outside air and open to return air. If the fan is ON and the control is in the Occupied mode, the Comfort System AirManager control checks to see if the system is in the HEAT mode. If the system is in the HEAT mode, the mixed-air dampers are positioned to provide only the user-configured minimum percentage of outdoor air. If the system is not in the HEAT mode, the Comfort System AirManager control determines if the outside conditions are suitable for atmospheric cooling. The Comfort System AirManager control compares the outdoor-air temperature to the space temperature. If the outdoor-air temperature is less than the space temperature, the system does either an enthalpy check (using an outside-air enthalpy switch) or a differential enthalpy check (return-air enthalpy is compared to outside-air enthalpy). If outside conditions are suitable, the Comfort System Air- Manager control compares the space temperature to the damper set point and computes the mixed-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required mixed-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the mixed-air temperature sensor value. The damper is adjusted as required to maintain the mixed air temperature set point. The damper adjustment rate is automatically limited to prevent nuisance low temperature thermostat tripping. Electric heater control Electric heater control operates the electric heater stages as required. The heater is staged to prevent the space temperature from falling below the desired set point. If the supply fan is OFF, all stages of electric heat are turned off. If the fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature sensor and calculates the supply-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature to determine the number of heat stages required to satisfy conditions. If more than one stage is required, the stages are energized one at a time, with a delay between stages. Two speed fan The fan speed control is used with twospeed motors or single-speed motors operated from a variable frequency drive in order to provide energy savings and more closely match the unit s capacity to that of the load. Whenever the fan is off, or if the humidity exceeds the configured high humidity limit, the fan speed is set to LOW. If the fan is ON, the fan speed control determines if the space temperature is exceeding the cooling set point, falling below the heating set point, or if the mixed-air damper is providing maximum economizer operation. If any of the conditions exist, then the fan speed control will operate the fan at the HIGH speed. After the space conditions return to normal and the cooling and or heating loads decrease, the fan speed control will resume LOW speed fan operation. Variable air volume units only Heating coil control The heating coil control adjusts the steam or hot water valve. Heat is primarily used for Morning Warm-Up or Occupied Heating with the valve modulated to maintain desired return-air temperature. If the supply fan is OFF, the heating valve is modulated to maintain a desired minimum duct temperature (fan off value). If the fan is ON, the system determines if it is in the morning warm-up mode. If it is, the return-air sensor is read and compared to the Occupied Heating set point. If heating is required, the Comfort System AirManager control calculates the supply-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the actual supply-air temperature and the heating coil valve modulates to the required position. Once morning warm-up is completed, heat is not activated again unless Occupied Heat has been selected. During cooling or fan-only operation, heat can also be provided to maintain the supply-air temperature when the amount of cold outside air admitted by the IAQ control causes the temperature to fall below the supply-air set point. If dehumidification is being provided by the chilled water coil cooling control and the Reheat option has been enabled, the valve is modulated to maintain the supply air temperature set point. Face and bypass heating control The heating coil control is used to position a set of face and bypass dampers immediately upstream from a steam or hot water heating coil. Heat is primarily used for Morning Warm-Up or Occupied Heating with the dampers modulated to maintain the desired return-air temperature. If the fan is off, the dampers are positioned to the full bypass position, and the heating control valve is closed. If the supply-air temperature drops below the minimum desired duct temperature (fan-off value), the heating control valve is opened as required to maintain the desired set point. If the fan is on, the Comfort System AirManager control determines if it is in the Morning Warm-Up or Occupied Heating mode. If true, the value of the return-air temperature is read by the Comfort System AirManager control and is compared to the Occupied Heating set point. If heating is needed, the control calculates the supply-air temperature required to satisfy the desired set point. 11

12 Controls (cont) Once the control has calculated the required supply-air temperature, it compares the actual supply-air temperature to the calculated value and modulates the face and bypass damper set as required to achieve this value. Once Morning Warm-Up is completed, heat is not activated again unless Occupied Heating has been selected. During cooling or fan-only operation, heating is also used to maintain the supply-air temperature when the amount of cold outdoor air admitted by the IAQ control causes the supply-air temperature to drop below the supply air set point. If dehumidification is being provided by the chilled water coil control and the Reheat option is enabled, the dampers are modulated to maintain the supply air temperature set point. Chilled water coil cooling control The cooling coil control adjusts the chilled water valve. The valve is modulated to maintain desired leaving-air temperature set point. The valve is closed whenever the system is in Unoccupied Free Cooling or whenever the supply fan is OFF. If the fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the humidity sensor (optional) and compares the value to the high humidity limit. If the humidity is higher than the humidity limit, the chilled water valve fully opens. If the humidity is below the high humidity limit, or if no humidity sensor is supplied, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the supply-air sensor, provided that the return-air temperature has risen at least 1 degree F above the Occupied Heating set point. The control then calculates the desired supply-air temperature set point. Once the required supply air set point has been calculated, it is compared to the current supply-air temperature and the chilled water valve modulates to the position required. Face and bypass cooling control The cooling coil control is used to position a set of face and bypass dampers immediately upstream from a chilled water cooling coil. The cooling coil control adjusts the position of the dampers to maintain the desired leaving-air temperature set point. If the fan is off or unoccupied free cooling is active, the damper set is modulated to the full bypass position and the chilled water valve is closed. If the fan is on, the Comfort Stream AirManager control reads the humidity sensor (optional) and compares the value to the high humidity limit. If the humidity exceeds the limit, the damper set is modulated to the full face position and the chilled water valve is opened. If the humidity is below the high humidity limit, or if no humidity sensor is supplied, the Comfort Stream AirManager control reads the supply air sensor, provided that the return-air temperature has risen at least 1 degree F above the Occupied Heating Set Point. The control then calculates the desired supply-air temperature set point. Once the required supply air set point has been calculated, it is compared to the current supply-air temperature and the dampers are modulated to the required position. Static pressure control The static pressure control adjusts the inlet guide vanes (IGVs) or the supply-fan variable frequency drive (optional) in a variable air volume system in order to maintain the duct static pressure set point. If the supply fan is OFF, the IGVs remain closed or the minimum speed signal is sent to the variable frequency drive. If the fan is ON, the control reads the duct static pressure sensor. The system compares the duct static pressure to the set point and calculates the required signal that is output to the IGV actuator or the variable frequency drive. Electric heater control The electric heater control operates the electric heater stages as required. The heater is primarily used for Morning Warm-Up or Occupied Heating, with the heater staged to maintain the desired returnair temperature. If the supply fan is OFF, all stages of electric heat are turned off. If the fan is ON, the Comfort System AirManager control determines if the system is in Morning Warm-Up. If it is, the return-air sensor is read and compared to the Occupied Heating set point. If heat is required, the Comfort System AirManager control calculates the supply-air temperature required to satisfy conditions. Once the required supply-air temperature has been calculated, it is compared to the supply-air temperature sensor reading to determine the number of heat stages required to satisfy conditions. The required stages are energized sequentially. Once the morning warm-up is completed, heat is not activated again unless Occupied Heat has been selected. Supply-air temperature reset The supply-air temperature reset is used to reset the supply-air temperature set point upward as the return air temperature falls below the Occupied Cooling set point or as a function of an externallysupplied 4 to 20 ma signal. As the return-air temperature falls below the cooling set point, the supply air set point is reset upward as a function of the reset ratio. The reset ratio is the number of degrees of change in supply-air temperature per degree of return-air temperature change. A reset limit specifies the maximum number of degrees the supplyair temperature may be raised. Both the reset ratio and the reset limits are user adjustable. When the fan is ON, and the system is in the Occupied mode, the Comfort System AirManager control reads the space temperature sensor and computes the reset value. If the reset value is greater than the reset limit, the Comfort System AirManager control uses the reset limit as the reset value. The modified supply-air temperature set point is determined by adding the reset value to the configured supply- air temperature set point. This value is then used by the cooling coil and mixed-air damper control algorithm. Mixed-air damper control The mixed-air damper control modulates the outside-air, return-air, and exhaust-air dampers. When outdoor air conditions are unsuitable for atmospheric cooling, the dampers are positioned to provide only the minimum percentage of outside air (adjustable). At all other times the mixed-air dampers are modulated to maintain a mixed-air temperature equal to the calculated supplyair temperature set point minus 4 F. 12

13 If the supply fan is OFF or operating during Unoccupied Heating, the mixed-air dampers are held closed to outside air and held open to return air. If the supply fan is ON, the control is in occupied mode and the system is in the HEAT mode, the mixed-air dampers are positioned to provide only the user-configured minimum percentage of outdoor air. At all other times the system determines if outside-air conditions are suitable for atmospheric cooling. The outside-air temperature is compared to the space temperature. If the outside-air temperature is less than the space temperature, the system performs either an enthalpy check or a differential enthalpy check. If the outside conditions are suitable, the Comfort System AirManager control modulates the damper to maintain the damper set point. The mixed-air damper opening rate is limited to protect against nuisance low temperature thermostat tripping. Linkage thermostat When each Comfort System AirManager control is used with a programmable thermostat, it provides a temperature compensated start feature which automatically calculates the time required to achieve the occupied set point. The feature then starts the unit prior to the scheduled time by that calculated amount, in order to achieve the occupied set point temperature by the occupied time programmed. The thermostat uses CCN Network communications to provide the required information exchange between the thermostat and the Comfort System AirManager air handler control(s). The thermostat can provide several system features which utilize the CCN network. One feature of this thermostat, Global Occupancy Scheduling, allows from one to all of the air handlers equipped with Comfort System AirManager controls to operate to a common occupancy schedule (all Comfort System AirManager controllers must be connected to a single CCN Network). Each Comfort System AirManager control will still use its own set points and space temperature for control. The Linkage feature allows several units to operate from a single common thermostat. This feature can be used if multiple units serve a single common area. The thermostat must be mounted in the common area space for this feature. The Broadcast feature provides the ability to send the value of a common sensor parameter, such as the outdoor air enthalpy, differential enthalpy, or building CO2 levels, over the CCN network to all controllers. This eliminates the additional component costs, mounting costs, and wiring costs of all but one sensor if more than one Comfort System Air- Manager control is being installed. The thermostat does NOT need to be mounted in any specific space for this feature. The thermostat can be mounted anywhere in a conditioned area as long it is connected to the CCN network communication bus. The thermostat power supply, included in the accessory package, provides the required DC voltage to operate the thermostat. The power supply requires 24 vac (Class II) power which can be supplied by an accessory transformer. This transformer must be isolated and provide power only to the thermostat. The transformer and power supply can be mounted within the control box enclosure. The TRANS 4 location can be used for this accessory transformer.
