introducin microwave cookin Always remember the basic safeuards you would follow when usin any cookin equipment or handlin hot food. This pae ives some of the basic uidelines for microwave cookin. If you are unfamiliar with usin a microwave, there is more information at the back of this instruction manual. cookin with a microwave Cookin with a microwave is much faster than conventional cookin and, whilst you should make sure that food is fully cooked, you should be careful not to overcook it. Microwave enery can heat unevenly so stirrin to distribute heat is very important. Always stir from the outside, inwards. If you are cookin a number of individual foods at the same time, such as baked es or small s, arrane them evenly on the turntable plate so that they cook evenly. Never stack food in the microwave. Turn larer foods such as meat roasts and poultry durin cookin so that the top and bottom cook evenly. It is also recommended to turn pieces of meat or poultry, especially if they have not been deboned. Meat and poultry which is cooked for minutes or more will brown lihtly in its own fat. Anythin cooked for a shorter time can be brushed with a brownin sauce to ive an appetisin colour. If you are unsure how lon the food should cook for, bein cookin at the lowest recommended time, then add more time if necessary. The moisture content of food can vary. Ensure food is thorouhly cooked all the way to the centre before servin. Strips of aluminium foil can be used to cover the thinner pieces of food to stop them overcookin before the thicker parts of the food have had a chance to cook. Use the aluminium foil sparinly and wrap around the food or container carefully to stop it touchin the inside of the microwave which could cause sparks. Microwaves cook food usin microwave enery that is similar to naturally occurrin radio waves. Normally, these waves would fade as they disappear into the atmosphere but in a microwave they are concentrated on the food causin it to heat up. Microwave enery cannot pass throuh metal so it can not escape from inside your microwave but it can pass throuh materials like lass, porcelain, plastic, and paper. These are the thins used to make microwave-safe cookin equipment. Microwave-safe cookin equipment will still et hot as the food it contains heats up. The microwave enery focuses on the moisture in the food causin lots of tiny vibrations. The vibrations et so reat that the moisture and the food heat up.

checkin your cookin utensils Most heat-resistant, non-metallic cookin utensils are safe to use in your microwave. If made of plastic or lass, utensils will be marked as microwave safe or similar. If you are not sure and/or there is no microwave-safe markin on the utensil, do NOT use it in the microwave. For the types of utensils you can use in the microwave, please see the Materials That Can Be Used section. Never use equipment made of metal, except aluminium foil in your microwave oven. The microwave enery can not pass throuh the metal so it bounces off and sparks aainst the inside of the oven. Stop the microwave straiht away if any equipment does cause sparks. Remember that some crockery has a metal trim around the ede. Even this trim can cause sparks. Never use scratched, cracked or damaed lass in a microwave. Damaed lass can explode. usin aluminium foil in your microwave It is safe to use aluminium foil in your microwave as lon as you follow these safety uidelines. As with all metals, microwave enery cannot pass throuh aluminium foil, but provided you keep the aluminium foil away from the side of the microwave it will not cause sparks and there will not be any damae to your microwave. Usin aluminium foil is a ood way of shieldin parts of food that you do not want to cook as ly as others perhaps where the food is narrower and would otherwise overcook. Place the aluminium foil over the area you want to shield, takin care that the aluminium foil will not touch the sides of the microwave when the turntable plate rotates. Only use one piece of aluminium foil at a time so that you do not et sparks between the separate pieces. Follow these uidelines when usin aluminium foil in your microwave: Remove aluminium foil lids from containers before usin in the microwave. Some lids are made of card with a aluminium foil coverin these should be removed too. Use a microwave safe transparent lid if possible. Stir food durin cookin if the container has a lid or film cover. Always use the lass turntable plate. Use shallow containers with a lare surface area. Do not use containers that are more than.in (.cm) deep. Use loves when handlin hot aluminium foil containers. Do not completely cover food with aluminium foil. The microwave enery cannot pass throuh the aluminium foil so the food will not cook. Do not let aluminium foil touch the inside of the microwave. Do not use more than one piece of aluminium foil in the microwave at the same time.

materials that can be used in the microwave utensils Aluminum foil Brownin dish Dinnerware Glassware Oven cookin bas Paper plates and cups Paper towels Greaseproof paper Plastic containers Plastic wrap remarks Shieldin only. Small smooth pieces can be used to cover thin parts of meat or poultry to prevent overcookin. Arcin can occur if foil is too close to oven walls. The foil should be at least inch (.cm) away from oven walls. Follow manufacturer s instructions. The bottom of brownin dish must be at least / inch (mm) above the turntable. Incorrect usae may cause the turntable to break. Microwave-safe only. Follow manufacturer s instructions. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes. Heat-resistant oven lassware only. Make sure there is no metallic trim. Do not use cracked or chipped dishes. Follow manufacturer s instructions. Do not close with metal tie. Make slits to allow steam to escape. Use for short term cookin/warmin only. Do not leave oven unattended while cookin. Use to cover food for in and absorbin fat. Use with supervision for a short-term cookin only. Use as a cover to prevent splatterin or a wrap for steamin. Microwave-safe only. Follow the manufacturer s instructions. Should be labelled Microwave Safe. Some plastic containers soften, as the food inside ets hot. Boilin bas and tihtly closed plastic bas should be slit, pierced or vented as directed by the instructions on their packain. Microwave-safe only. Use to cover food durin cookin to retain moisture. Do not allow plastic wrap to touch food.

microwave heatin cateories Your microwave has been tested and labelled to meet the UK overnment s voluntary areement on the in of pre-cooked food. The heatin characteristics and output s of microwaves are usually calculated usin a relatively lare portion of food (a ram load, IEC ) but many packs of pre-cooked food are sold in smaller packs, often about rams. The UK overnment, in partnership with food companies and microwave manufacturers, has set up a system of heatin cateories to help you choose the in time for pre-cooked food. W E W is the output of the microwave. (IEC ) E is the heatin cateory for your microwave. Check the cookin times for cateory E on the food s packain to see how lon it should be cooked for. The cateory (a letter from A to E), is desined to help you small quantities of food such as microwave ready meals. The label iven above and also on the oven door ives the heatin cateory and output of the oven. Microwave ready meals weihin up to (lb oz) should have cookin instructions for heatin cateories A to E. Follow the instructions for the letter that corresponds to the heatin cateory of the oven. The hiher the output and heatin cateory of the oven the less heatin time is required. This is shown in the diarams below: Less heatin time required oven output Watts More heatin time required Less heatin time required oven output cateory A B C D E More heatin time required Start cookin at the lowest recommended time, and add more time if necessary. The moisture content of food can vary, ensure food is cooked thorouhly all the way to the centre before servin.

spahetti S S S combo : combo : combo : combo : weiht beverae steam When you microwave food, steam is created as water in the food heats up and evaporates. The steam formed durin microwave cookin is entirely safe. It has to escape from the microwave to prevent pressure from buildin up inside the microwave. It does this throuh the vents on the back of the microwave and from around the door. condensation As the steam cools, you may find that condensation athers in small pools inside your microwave and on the work surface beneath the door and vents. Always dry the microwave after cookin foods with a hih moisture content. Your microwave is desined to let steam escape from the vents and around the door without microwave enery escapin. There is no daner of microwave enery escapin with the steam.

Wipe off rease with a damp cloth and a little deterent. Dry thorouhly. If rease is left to accumulate, it can smoke and even catch fire. Make sure you keep the outlet rids clean. Keep the front of the microwave clean so that the door can close properly. Be careful not to spill water into the vents. Do not remove the wave uide cover: It is important to keep the cover clean in the same manner as the inside of the microwave. If rease is left to accumulate, it can smoke and even catch fire. Keep the inside of the door clean with a damp cloth. Use warm soapy water for stubborn marks and dry thorouhly. The inside of the door has a special coatin and must not be cleaned with abrasive pads or cleanin powders. Clean behind the door lede. Use warm soapy water to clean the outside of the microwave. Do not use abrasive cleaners, pads or powders that could scratch the surface. Unplu the microwave before cleanin the cord and the microwave. Wipe with a damp cloth and leave to dry before pluin it back in. Treat the lass turntable plate as you would any lass plate. After you have used it for more than minutes, allow it to cool down before you use it aain. Do not wash the lass turntable plate in very hot water, doin so could crack it. Wash the turntable support in warm water. Do not use very hot water which could make it warp. Make sure the lass turntable plate and turntable support are dry before you put them back in the microwave. Do not remove any fixed parts from the inside of your microwave durin cleanin or at any other time.

frequently asked questions If a problem does occur, it may often be due to somethin very minor. The followin Q & A may be able to resolve the problem. questions Why doesn t the food seem to cook? Why does the food seem undercooked or overcooked? How can I stop es from poppin? Why is it so important that I allow standin time after cookin? Why does my microwave sometimes take loner to cook than it says in the recipe? Why do I et condensation on the inside of the door? Does the microwave enery et throuh the window on the door? Steam comes out of the side of the door and vents. Can microwave enery et out too? What happens if the microwave is switched on while the microwave is empty? Why doesn t the microwave s liht illuminate? There are sparks inside the microwave when I use the microwave. Will this cause any damae? Liht is showin throuh the vents and door. Does this mean the microwave enery can escape? Why do I et interference on my TV and radio when I use the microwave? answers Check that: the cookin time has been set. the door is closed. the mains socket is not overloaded causin the fuse to blow. Check that: the correct cookin time has been set. the correct settin has been used. When you bake or poach es in the microwave, the yolk can sometimes pop as steam builds up inside it. You can stop the e from poppin by piercin the yolk with a toothpick before cookin. Never cook es that are still in their shells. With microwave cookin, many foods build up enouh heat inside them to continue cookin even after they ve been taken out of the microwave. Because microwave cookin works from the outside of food inwards, standin time lets you cook the centre of the food without the outside bein overcooked. First check that the microwave was set just as the recipe said. Cookin times and heat settins are suestions to help prevent overcookin but differences in the weiht, size, shape and in temperature of food will all affect how lon it takes to cook just as it does with a conventional oven. Use your judement alon with the recipe to check whether the food has been cooked properly. Condensation is perfectly normal, especially when you are cookin food with a hih moisture content such as es. No. The door has a special metal screen with holes in that lets you see inside but stops microwave enery from ettin out. No. The door and vents are carefully desined to let steam out durin cookin but keep microwave enery in. The aps are not bi enouh for microwave enery to escape. The microwave will be damaed. Do not switch the microwave on when there s nothin inside the microwave. It is a ood idea to keep a cup of water in the microwave just in case someone accidentally s the microwave. Open the door. If the liht does not illuminate, the bulb has probably blown. Call a qualified technician do not try to chane the bulb yourself. Yes. Make sure that you are not usin any metal utensils and that your containers don t have a metal trim. You must not use metal in your microwave when you cook (except aluminium foil). No. It is normal for the liht to be visible and is nothin to be concerned about. Microwaves use radio waves similar to those received by TVs and radios. You can lessen the interference by movin your microwave further away from the TV or radio.
