10 Flush Away Your Worries, Not Your Money Nothing is more shocking and troublesome than receiving your water bill and noticing that it is outlandishly higher than it has ever been before and you have been wasting water all month. Or, having to hold your breath when you flush the toilet, hoping everything goes away as it should! How about worrying if you need to break out the shop-vac to suck up water from a flooded basement. There are several small maintenance checks that you or an Anthony PHC technician can perform that will identify an issue or catch problems before they occur, preventing costly plumbing repairs. 1. Check your Bathrooms Check the toilet for leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring into the tank. If the water in the toilet bowl changes color after 30 minutes, that is a sign that there is an issue with the components in the tank. Then call us to diagnose and repair it correctly. 2. Protect The Sewer Line From Tree Roots Spring showers may bring May flowers, but they also can cause major issues with tree roots blocking the underground sewer piping. Trees sit dormant during the winter months, but when the weather starts to warm up the tree roots begin to reach out to search for water. We have inspection cameras that will identify if there are any tree roots or other obstructions in your drain pipes. 3. Inspect Indoor Faucets A leaky faucet may make an annoying drip sound but can also lead to higher utility bills. Check for moisture around the outside of the faucet. Since a faucet may have leaks hidden from view, it is wise to check under and around the sink for wet spots or warped cabinetry. 4. Evaluate Outdoor Hose Faucets During the winter the outdoor hose faucet is very susceptible to freezing and cracking. Look at the outside of the faucet and down the inside and outside walls of the home to see if there is evidence of a leak. Did You KNOW? > When running grease down your garbage disposal, you should only run cold water. Hot water causes the grease to breakdown and adhere to the inside walls of pipes, eventually causing clogs. By using cold water, the grease droplets float on the top of the water and out to the sewer. > The US Department of Energy (DOE) has set July 3, 2019 as the date that furnace manufacturers must use low wattage motors in all furnaces. 13 Sump Pump Rhythm and Blues The sump pump, while not terribly glamorous, provides tremendous peace of mind for homeowners that is unmatched by any other piece of equipment. Rain and snow saturate the ground around and below your home s foundation. Hydrostatic pressure causes a build-up against the concrete walls and will either cause cracks or overwork your drainage system. Taking the time to maintain your sump pump will ensure it s ready for action when you need it. Follow these simple steps: During dry periods, pour water into the pit to run a full cycle. Make sure the float is unobstructed and working correctly. Make sure water is being pumped out and there are no obstructions in the discharge piping outside. The battery for a back-up pump should be replaced every five years. Even though you have been doing the preventative maintenance listed above you will eventually need to replace it, but what are the signs that the sump pump needs to be replaced? The first warning sign is often a basement floor that goes splash. DON T FLIP OVER A DRIP One of the most wasteful and troublesome faucets in your home is the outdoor hose faucet. How many times have you tried turning the handle off as tight as you can, and it still drips! In many cases, outdoor faucets drip due to old rubber technology that cracks when aged.
