Introduction Thank you for purchasing this quality product which is fully patented. No. EP The Oxyvent Tank is manufactured to high environmental standards ISO 14001, System certification ISO 9002, an approved TUV certification of design and CE mark. It is manufactured from high quality 6.5mm mild steel selected by TUV, surrounded with high quality moulded insulation and cased. The Oxyvent Tank has been tested by The Fluids and Heat Transfer Laboratory, Trinity College Dublin and results confirmed there were energy savings and improved comfort. How the Oxyvent Tank works The Oxyvent Tank acts as a highly efficient heat exchanger which maintains optimal temperature conditions for longer. It also allows the boiler to run at lower temperatures with less repeated cycles. All of these benefits contribute towards reducing fuel consumption. Another advantage of the Oxyvent Tank is that it automatically removes air from the system on a continual basis, which prolongs the heating system s life and allows it to run more efficiently. The Oxyvent Tank can be installed in both new and existing heating systems. All Oxyvent Tanks are manufactured and pressure tested to the highest standards using quality materials. We endeavour to bring you the best innovative product money can buy. Important Safety Information - Before installing this product please read this Installation Manual, make sure that all requirements are met. - The Oxyvent Tank is designed for use in open vented or sealed water systems only, to a maximum working pressure of 3 Bar. A three bar safety valve must be fitted to the primary flow pipe and discharged safely. - The Oxyvent Tank is approved as a pressure vessel and should only be installed by a qualified plumber. Caution: Domestic hot water can reach very high temperatures. - Expansion vessel must be fitted to all sealed systems. - This product is heavy. Care should be taken when moving it. - The Oxyvent Tank is approved as a pressure vessel and has a certificate of design approval issued by TUV - Ensure that all units on the central heating system have reached the established standards and recommendations. Manufacturers: VDL Group, The Netherlands Output: 150,000 BTU/Hr kw Maximum Temperature: 90 C Maximum pressure: 3 Bar Volume: 17 Litres 2

Installation of the Oxyvent Tank Position The Oxyvent Tank is placed at the centre of the heating system where flow and return from the boiler, domestic hot water tank and all the heating zones meet. The Oxyvent Tank has connections for 2 boilers and 2 heating zones and it has a total of 7 x 1 tappings. Where more than two boilers are required please contact Oxyvent Ltd. The Oxyvent Tank is approved as a pressure vessel and should be placed level on the floor or on a level stable surface where connections to and from the tank are put under no stress. The Oxyvent Tank must be attended to when the system is being filled and checked for leaks. Water in Radiator OUT Circuit 1 Return to boiler Radiator IN Circuit 1 Dimensions: 375mm high x 295mm sq. Weight: 28kg For a single zone heating system, plumb the radiator(s) into circuit 1 and blank off circuit 2 IMPORTANT There is a thermometer supplied with each Oxyvent Tank. Place the thermometer anywhere on the boilers flow pipe so it can easily be read. Set the boilers water temperature at 60 C using the thermometer. Ensure the flow from the boiler goes to the domestic hot water tank first, then enters the Boiler Flow tapping on The Oxyvent Tank and returns to the boiler. Ensure that all Oxyvent Tanks are fitted with an automatic air vent directly above the Boiler Flow Tapping and piped with approx. dip as shown on diagrams. This allows the trapped air in the tank to be released easily. The primary pump must be fitted on the return pipe to the boiler for greater flow rate. (except when pump is integral to boiler) Insure that all heating zone pumps (6 metre high head) are wired so that they will switch off with the boiler. Ensure that a 22mm by-pass wheel valve is fitted on the flow from the boiler to the return of the hot water tank. Close this valve when commissioning the system and make sure the valve is left fully open when completed. 3

TOWEL RAILS Towel Rails usually heat when the boiler is switched on. In this manual the diagrams show the towel rails connected to the primary pump so that they are on when the boiler is. It is recommended using a separate circulating pump if there are more than two Towel Rails used and of course the distance they are from The Oxyvent Tank must be considered. Please contact Oxyvent Ltd if you have any queries about connecting towel rails to heating systems. SYSTEMS We are all familiar with the common problems associated with radiator systems. These problems could not be corrected until the invention of The Oxyvent Tank. Previous to this the customer just had to accept these inefficiencies i.e. 1. Radiator s not heating to their full potential. 2. Frequent bleeding of radiators. 3. Balancing systems. 4. Radiators and pipes getting clogged up with air and dirt etc. 5. Cracks and noises whilst operating due to rapid temperature change. 6. Burning fuel with little return. The Oxyvent Tank was tested by the Fluids and Heat Transfer Laboratory, Trinity College Dublin. The tests results have shown The Oxyvent System outperforms traditional systems. 1. All radiators heat uniformly and to their full potential. 2. No bleeding of radiators required. 3. No balancing required. 4. No airlocks and corrosion greatly reduced. 5. Cracks and noises practically eliminated due to steady even temperature. 6. Fuel saving in radiator systems plus higher comfort factor. All existing radiator systems must be properly flushed out before installation of The Oxyvent Tank. Oxyvent Ltd will not take any responsibility for systems that are not flushed out. ATTIC INSTALLATIONS It is recommended that there should be a minimum of 1 metre height difference between the bottom of the existing heating system s expansion water tank (vented system) and the top of the Oxyvent Tank. We set out a selection of scenarios with plumbing schematics. These are provided as a guide only. 4

The user must be advised on the following points; Leave the dust cap loose on the automatic air vent on top of The Oxyvent Tank. If the system is pressurised the user should be informed to watch out for pressure loss and know how to top up the system when required. Check the pressure of air in the pressure vessel annually. Get the boiler service engineer to check the Boiler temperature stat annually as stats can often read false temperatures as they age. The correct shut off temperature for the boiler is 60 C on the outlet pipe. Make sure that all circulating pumps turn on and off with the boiler as pumps operating when the boiler is off will cause defects in the system. Pumps running constantly will give a slight humming noise, be aware of this. 13

TROUBLESHOOTING - S FAULTS Air gathering in radiators POSSIBLE CAUSES Faulty Boiler stat. or boiler stat giving incorrect reading. In some boilers it might be necessary to lower the stat settings to minimum as the water can reach very high temperatures. Check that all circulating pumps turn off with the boiler. Check for leaks on circulating pump valves and radiator valves. Check for a leak in the heating system. Automatic air vent faulty or the cap is on to tight and the air cannot escape. Pressure drop in the system. Top up system. Check that the pipe work is done correctly. Centre lower section of radiator not heating Build up of silt, flush out system. Fit a high head pump on radiator circuit. Pipe size to radiators undersized. Boiler temperature set to high. Radiators taking a long time to heat Boiler size too small - not producing required output. Pipe size to radiators undersized. Boiler burner running for long periods of time and not switching off. The boiler size is too small. Boiler stat faulty or the boiler can not control it s temperature. 14

UNDERFLOOR HEATING Oxyvent Limited is the first company in the world to install tanks in an underfloor heating system with substantial fuel saving. This new design is taking the underfloor heating system to a much higher level than before, with a 70% increase in flow rate. This patented design allows the water to enter the floor at the same temperature as the floor and increase gradually, The floor slab will induce the heat naturally at its own pace therefore having a quicker response on the floor slab temperature. So gone are the days of operating your underfloor heating 24 hours a day when room temperatures can be reached in hours rather than days. The Oxyvent Tank eliminates the need to flush out the air from the system. There are Two Oxyvent Tanks required for underfloor heating systems unless the mixing valve is incorporated into the manifold. Geothermal heat pumps only require one Oxyvent Tank. IMPORTANT A 100% manual underfloor heating mixing valve is placed between the Two Oxyvent Tanks, this must be the only mixing valve installed in the system. When commissioning a first time underfloor system always set the manual mixing valve at its lowest setting usually 30 C to prevent high water temperatures entering the floor. It is recommended to leave the mixing valve at its lowest setting until the floors have dried out. 30 C will give approx. 16 C in room temperature with water temperatures entering the floor at approx. 25 C. No Balancing is required as all ports on the under floor heating manifolds are open full. The average flow rate on each port on the manifold should read approximately 3 litres per minute, if not contact Oxyvent Ltd. If the underfloor heating system is left on constantly 24 hours a day every day, the air is trapped in The Oxyvent Tank and cannot escape. The air can only be released when the system is shut down. In these situations it is recommended to shut down the system for 1 minute every week to allow the trapped air to escape from The Oxyvent Tank. AFTER INSTALLATION It is important to remember that when commissioning an underfloor heating system using The Oxyvent Tank system the water in the pipes entering the floor will remain at the same temperature as the floor and increase gradually. To check and see if the heating is operating check the room temperature rather than checking the temperature of the pipes entering the floor as it operates at a very low temperature and can be misleading compared to existing systems. You should notice a difference in room temperature in approx. 2 to 4 hours. Tiles/ wood floors It is highly recommended to use tiles with underfloor heating as they allow an efficient heat transfer. Wood is an insulator and will obviously reduce heat transfer. It is vital when using wood that you have a direct contact with the complete floor area with no air pockets. To allow for this poor heat transfer water temperature must be increased by up to 20 C depending on how the floors are laid to achieve the equivalent room temperature as tiles. The finished wooden floor must make direct contact with the floor slab to achieve proper heat transfer. Therefore a wooden floor will greatly increase the heating bill. 15

TROUBLESHOOTING - UNDERFLOOR HEATING FAULTS Rooms not reaching required temperature POSSIBLE CAUSES Raise mixing valve temperature setting Where timber floors are installed this will greatly reduce heat transfer, to allow for this inefficiency the water temperature must be increased at the mixing valve depending on how poor the heat transfer is. Poor flow rate showing on underfloor manifold Make sure the underfloor heating pipe and manifolds are fully flushed out and all air is eliminated before commissioning the system. Check that the pipe size feeding the manifolds is correctly sized. Check circulating pump speed settings and size. Make sure all the loops on the manifold are open fully as there is no balancing required. Noise in the system Automatic air vent faulty or the cap is on too tight and the air cannot escape Check that all circulating pumps turn off with the boiler Check for a leak in the heating system Pressure drop in the system, top up system. Check that the pipe work is done correctly. 18

UNDERFLOOR HEATING Information for the user This manual must be left with the owner. - No balancing required so make sure all the ports on the underfloor manifold are fully open. - Make sure that you understand how to operate the room stats especially the digital ones. - Get your Installer to show you the settings on the manual mixing valve. The Oxyvent Tank release the trapped air when the system shuts down, therefore if you are operating your system 24/7 then it would be necessary to shut off the system for one minute once a week to allow the trapped air to escape. - The underfloor heating system does not have to be on constant as the heat recovery on the floor is rapid. - Make sure that all circulating pumps turn off with the boiler. Pumps operating when the boiler is off will cause defects in the system. Pumps running constantly will give a slight humming noise be aware of this. - Leave the dust cap loose on the automatic air vent on top of the Oxyvent Tank. - If the system is pressurised check the system pressure and watch out for pressure loss. - Make sure you have an isolating switch or time clock to turning off the underfloor as Oxyvent recommend using the underfloor system only when you require heat and not have it operating constantly. - Set the boiler temperature at 60 C 19

GEOTHERMAL HEAT The advantage of installing the Oxyvent Tank to a geothermal heat pump system is to increase the flow rate and blending the water temperatures before entering the floor. Oxyvent cannot guarantee a specific fuel saving in geothermal heat pumps as it would depend on the floor area of the building and the output of the pump etc. EXPANSION VESSEL HEAT DHW TANK HEATING ZONE PRIMARY BYPASS (WHEEL VALVE) FILL VALVE Fig. 21: Shows geothermal heat pump domestic hot water tank and U.F.H. manifold. 20

DOMESTIC HOT WATER Shortage of domestic hot water is the one item that everyone can relate to. The Oxyvent Tank has a very unique way of addressing this situation, when the heated water leaves the boiler it goes to the hot water tank first when it is at its hottest, heating the hot water tank uniformly from top to bottom. It isolates the hot water tank from the rest of the system putting it on a single primary line before the heated elements are connected, once the hot water tank is heated it cannot cool. This is not the case with other systems. It produces twice as much hot water and zones the radiators and underfloor heating systems from it. OIL COOKERS Oil cookers are notoriously inefficient and it is virtually impossible to regulate the temperature of the cooker. The water is constantly boiling in the cooker resulting in over heating and having to dump this heated water into the elements of the system such as radiators etc. The Oxyvent Tank increases the flow rate, moving the water out of the boiler as fast as possible, controlling the temperature of the cooker and preventing the dumping of heated water, eliminating the necessity of having a radiator or underfloor heating on when the cooker is operating. This results in excellent baking and cooking properties, with a 50% fuel saving. Oxyvent are not responsible for the following: - Boilers that are unable to control their own temperature. - Other products on the heating system that hold trapped air. - Boilers that do not produce their required output. - Boiler stats that give false readings. - Semi pressurised systems. The correct system should either be: 1. An open vented system, which has a small tank in the attic with an open pipe, bent in over the top of the tank. 2. Pressurised system has an expansion vessel, fill valve and pressure gauge reading approx. 1 Bar. Semi Pressurising: Not Recommended Semi pressurised system has an expansion vessel and it gets its feed from the domestic water tank in the attic, it has an non-return valve fitted which stops the water in the heating from entering the domestic water system. If this non-return valve has a leakage or gets stuck the water in the boiler and radiators would seep back into the hot and cold water contaminating the water. This system is bad practices, dangerous and should be corrected immediately. The Oxyvent Tank will not operate correctly if the system is semi pressurised; this is a very important feature of The Oxyvent Tank as safety always comes first. It is vital to have your house properly Insulated in order to maintain maximum benefit and savings from the Oxyvent Tank. When a house is not properly Insulated, a significant heat loss will occur. 21
