December was the warmest on record since January s weather was highlighted by Blizzard Jonas and February has had some very cold days followed by unseasonably warm days. Some mega companies promise the world and say everything right with their million dollar marketing campaigns. Unfortunately, as usual, it is too good to be true. Other industries do it too they pressure the homeowner to sign today for an installation tomorrow. They tell the customer it is great service, but the truth is they don t want the customer to be able to compare prices. We have seen it countless times and can only urge consumers to always get a second estimate. A next day installation may seem convenient, but it is not worth an extra $5000 to $10,000! Tell your friends and relatives to always get a second opinion if the repair is more than five hundred dollars. Some multi-million dollar companies bait customers to get into the house and then find hundreds of dollars of repairs that may be unnecessary. Customers must be wary of these practices. Heating Oil Prices Staying Low So what s been happening with these prices? The rules of supply and demand are really in favor of oil heat consumers currently. Supply is very high when the demand is not growing quickly enough to keep up. There are several factors that have caused this. First, U.S. oil production has doubled in the last six years. Couple that with an increased market share in Asia, creating new competition which has forced Nigerian and Algerian oil prices to drop in order to stay competitive, Saudia Arabia flooding the market with crude, China s slowing economy and you have a recipe for low prices. Also, with investments in alternative fuels as well as increased energy efficiencies, the demand in places such as Europe and developing countries has decreased. All of these factors have led to a dramatic decrease in oil prices. This year, the average homeowner is expected to spend $750 less on fuel costs than last year, allowing them to spend their hard earned money on things other than energy bills the lowest winter bills in over a decade. With lower household energy costs, it is a great time to use the saved money to increase comfort and efficiency of your HVAC systems. We don t have a crystal ball regarding future prices, but some experts believe prices will remain at lower levels for several years. We can only hope! Have your Chimney Lined by Oehlert Bros.! A revolution of sorts has been occurring in the HVAC equipment segment. Variable speed is not exactly a new technology, but it is becoming more and more widespread these days with many types of heating and cooling equipment taking advantage of it. Ductless A/C units installed by Oehlert Bros. use inverter technology that ramps the speed of the condenser fan up and down to closely match the demand.
