Maintaining a clean, uncontaminated recycling stream takes education, effort and vigilance. Contamination, meaning the inclusion of unacceptable materials in the recycling stream, increases the City s costs, lowers the value of recyclable materials and causes unsafe conditions for employees sorting those materials. Plastic bags, trash, yard waste and Styrofoam are some of the unacceptable materials the City sees in carts most often. Residents are encouraged to check out the Curbside Recycling Guide on page 2 to ensure they are recycling like a pro! The City has a bag-free system. Accepted recyclables should always be placed loose in carts. Plastic bags of any kind are not accepted in the City s curbside recycling carts. Employees in a material recovery facility often sort recyclables by hand and are in direct contact with recyclables. When plastic bags are improperly mixed in with recyclables, the bags entwine in the equipment, causing unsafe conditions and increasing costs. Plastic bags are collected at most grocery stores and residents can now recycle Styrofoam at the Polystyrene #6 recycling station, located at the Department of Public Works drop-off site at 1800 E. State Road. Recyclables should be free of food, but there is no need to remove labels, caps, paper clips, staples, etc. All recyclables must fit inside carts with the lid closed. Happy Recycling! 3 2019 Curbside Recycling Schedule JANUARY APRIL JULY FEBRUARY MAY AUGUST MARCH JUNE SEPTEMBER OCTOBER NOVEMBER DECEMBER Recycle Like a Pro No plastic bags, Styrofoam, yard waste, food waste, etc. Carts should have at least 3 ft. of clearance on all sides. All recycling should be contained within carts with lids closed and the lid opening facing the street. Place cart at curb no earlier than 8 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 7:30 a.m. the day of collection. Not sure whether you are in green week or blue week? 4 Document Destruction Day The Old Town Commercial Association and Friedland Industries will host a Document Destruction Day on Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. This free event will take place at 405 E. Maple Street in Lansing. Learn more at Spring Cleaning with Simple Recycling Materials accepted for Simple Recycling s free curbside pickup include textiles, clothing, shoes, pillows, toys, jewelry, small appliances and kitchenware. Residents can simply put their orange Simple Recycling bags next to their curbside recycling cart on their regular recycling day. Free bags are available at East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Hannah Community Center and the East Lansing Department of Public Works. Free bags can also be requested by contacting Simple Recycling at (866) or via simplerecycling.com/supplies. Yard Waste Program Yard waste includes leaves, plant materials, grass clippings, brush and limbs. Containing Yard Waste There are three ways to contain yard waste (no-fee days are exempt from City bag/sticker requirement, all other guidelines apply): City paper yard waste bags Rigid, 32-gallon plastic container or paper bag with City yard waste sticker (do not use Easy Carts, recycling carts or plastic bags to dispose of yard waste) Bundled (with string or twine) with a City yard waste sticker No more than 40 pounds Bags and stickers can be purchased at locations throughout East Lansing. Call (517) or visit yardwaste for details. Yard waste may be placed at the curb after 8 p.m. the day before collection or no later than 7:30 a.m. on the day of collection. Prior to that, it should be stored in a dry location. Disposing of Yard Waste Curbside Yard Waste Collection (April 1-Nov. 18) Curbside collection takes place on Mondays (excluding holidays) from April 1-Nov. 18. Bags must weigh no more than 40 pounds. Bundles may be no more than 4 feet long and 1 foot in diameter and weigh no more than 40 pounds. Individual limbs must be 4 inches in diameter or less. Visit or call DPW at (517) Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to request a pickup. Online requests must be made by 7 a.m. on the Monday of collection and phone requests must be made by 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to the Monday collection. No-Fee Curbside Yard Waste Collection (April 15 and May 13) Dispose of yard waste for free on April 15 and May 13. Yard waste must be placed in a paper yard waste bag, rigid plastic container or bundled and placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. Advanced requests and City bags/stickers are not required. 5 Recycle! East Lansing to Take Place June 1 Recycle! East Lansing, an annual spring recycling event for community members, will take place on Saturday, June 1 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Abbott Center, Abbot Road. Proof of East Lansing residency is required. Numerous household items will be accepted for reuse, recycling or proper disposal, including small appliances, clothing, textiles, books, electronics, scrap metal and wood, polystyrene, bicycles, medication, cell phones and eyeglasses. There will be a charge of $20 each to recycle all TV and computer monitors - cash or checks only. Other electronics can be recycled for free. Lumber and tires will also be accepted for a fee. BWL customers that recycle a working air conditioner or dehumidifier will receive a $25 rebate per unit. Visit cityofeastlansing.com/recycleel for more information. Volunteer to help! Seniors and disabled residents can receive free curbside pickup thanks to the Friends of East Lansing Seniors. Call (517) by May 29 to schedule a pickup. Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste Ingham County s Household Hazardous Waste collections run May-September. Collections are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2-6 p.m., at the Ingham County Health Department, 5303 S. Cedar St. Items accepted include pesticides, oil-based paints and more. 6 Energy Efficiency Rebates for BWL Customers Out & About with DPW Making energy efficiency improvements to a home can help reduce usage and allow customers to take advantage of Lansing Board of Water & Light (BWL) rebates. A variety of incentives and educational opportunities are available for BWL residential electric customers. High Efficiency Products Cash rebates from $5-$550 are available for the purchase and installation of qualifying equipment such as high efficiency ENERGY STAR central and room air conditioners, furnace motors (with new furnace), programmable thermostats, televisions, refrigerators, LED bulbs and more. Rebate applications are available on BWL s website and at participating local retailers. Appliance Recycling Customers can take advantage of free pickup and recycling of older, inefficient refrigerators, freezers, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Customers may recycle up to two of each item per year for a rebate of $25- $50 per working unit. Dispose of these appliances properly and get money back with BWL! Pollinator Friendly Community As a Pollinator Friendly Community, the City of East Lansing is continuing to work to help pollinators thrive in the community. This work has included reducing the use of chemical pesticides in the City, enhancing safe and healthy pollinator forage habitats on City properties and encouraging local businesses, schools, neighborhoods and households to adopt pollinator friendly policies and practices. Residents can help with this effort by reducing the use of pesticides in their yard, planting pollinatorfriendly plants, leaving some areas in yards mulch-free, converting portions of lawns into wildflower meadows and more.
