Heat Energy & Transfer

This purchase contains 24 task cards for students to identify conduction, convection, radiation, insulators, and conductors. Students must also evaluate where the heat originates from and which object does it travel to in each example. Perfect for small group instruction or as a group activity. Great for formative assessment! Answer key is included. Graphic Credit:

#1 Sammy wasn t feeling well, so her mom made chicken noodle soup. Mom put ice cubes in the soup to cool it. Sammy then took a spoonful of soup and carefully brought it to her lips. Henry and his friends were telling ghost stories near the campfire. Henry could feel heat, as he put the pot of water onto the portable stove top they had placed over the fire. Who wants hot cocoa? he asked. #2 Jim s dad was grilling hot dogs for their big 4th of July party. When Jim walked outside he noticed the sun was beaming on the grill. Boy it sure is extra hot near the grill Dad, Jim said. #3 Kyla was skiing in the mountains with her family for spring break. As she was soaring down a ski slope, she tripped and fell into the snow. She took her gloves off and picked up a handful of snow. #4

#5 Lisa was getting her nails done for the spring dance at school. When she arrived at the nail salon, the nail tech put hot water in a spa chair and had Lisa soak her feet. While at the nail salon, Lisa noticed that some women whom were getting their nails done were drying their nail polish with these portable drying systems that used UV lighting. #6 Jack was washing his dog, Tank outside on a hot, summer day. Jack used a hose to put water in a kiddie pool and then put ice cubes in the water to keep it cool for Tank. #7 Becca needed to get ready for an afternoon at the movies. First, she took a steaming hot shower. She then used the blow dryer to dry her hair. Finally, she curled her hair with a curling iron. #8

#9 It was Saturday morning and Lucas was hungry. He used the toaster to make toast. Then he smeared peanut butter all over the hot waffles. The peanut butter started to melt. Gina and Timmy were playing outside. Their mom noticed that they were starting to get hot, so she brought them ice cream cones. As quickly as they started eating, the ice cream started melting. #11 #10 Harry s family loved growing gardens in their backyard. His father had recently built a greenhouse too. Every time Harry went into the greenhouse he noticed it was really warm. Paige was home from school because of a huge snow storm. Paige and her brother went down into the family room which was in the basement. When they got downstairs they were greeted with cold air. Turn on the heater, said Paige to her brother. #12

Define conduction. Define convection. #14 #13 Which heat transfer supports the fact that hot air and water rise? Define radiation. #15 #16

#17 #19 Katie and her mom were baking for Katie s bake sale at school. Mom poured her cake batter into a metal pan and Katie poured her brownie mix into a glass pan. Your brownies will take longer to cook than my cake, said Katie s mom. #18 Katie put both pans into the oven at 350 degrees. After 35 minutes, Katie took the cake pan out of the oven using an oven mitt. She checked the brownies, but they weren t ready. Katie noticed that the kitchen was starting to feel warm. As she waited for the cake to cool she cleaned up the mess her and mom made earlier. When she touched the marble countertop she observed that it felt cool. Before Kyla went skiing her mom made her wear 3 layers of clothing and a heavy jacket. She also put on a hat, earmuffs, scarf, and gloves before heading out the door. #20

Penguins on the coast of Antarctica huddle together during the cold winter months. While their eggs are going through incubation, the father penguin keeps the egg buried on feet in thick down coating. At Sally s house there have been some changes. Her parents put rubber around their water pipes, had double paned windows installed, and had air blown between their walls. Why did they make these changes? #22 #21 As Danny entered the car he noticed that the black interior felt very warm. He could feel the leather seat against part of his leg. As he put his seatbelt on the metal part touched his arm. OUCH, he yelled! Make a list of 3 conductors and 3 insulators. #23 #24

Directions: For cards #1-16, identify which type of heat transfer has occurred. Next, tell how the heat traveled. Example: While outside, Kelly held a snowball in her hand. Heat Transfer: conduction. The heat traveled from Kelly s hand/body temperature to the snowball. For cards #17-24 identify any conductors and insulators mentioned and the type of heat transfer that occurred.

Answer Key 1. putting ice in the soup (convection); eating the soup (conduction) 2. Radiation from the campfire; placing the pot on the hot stove (conduction) 3. Placing hot dogs on the grill (conduction), heat from the sun (radiation) 4. Picking up snow (conduction) 5. Placing feet into hot water (conduction) 6. Portable drying device (radiation) 7. Adding ice to water (convection) 8. Shower steaming up the room (convection), blow dryer (convection), curling iron (conduction) 9. Using a toaster and melting peanut butter (conduction) 10. Using a greenhouse (radiation) 11. Heat from the sun melting ice cream (radiation) 12. Turning on a heater (convection) 13. Conduction is the transfer of heat between two objects that are touching. 14. Convection is the transfer of heat within a liquid or a gas 15. Radiation is the transfer of heat without matter to carry it. 16. Convection

Answer Key 17. Metal and glass are conductors. Convection is happening as the cake is cooking. 18. Oven mitts are insulators. Holding the cooking pan is an example of conduction. 19. Marble is an insulator. Touching the countertop is conduction. The kitchen feeling warm is convection. 20. Layers of clothing are insulators. Feeling hot from your clothing is an example of conduction/convection. 21. Down coating on animals are insulators. Placing the egg on the penguin s feet is an example of conduction. 22. Rubber, glass, and air are all insulators. The family is trying to keep their house cool during the summer and warm during the winter. 23. Leather and metal are conductors. When Danny touches them this is an example of conduction. 24. Conductors: copper, diamonds, iron, silver, steel, aluminum, brass, etc. Insulators: cotton, paper, plastic, rubber, wood, etc.
