First, with a screw driver, remove a floor or wall register, then: 1. Use a small mirror and flashlight -or- 2. Use a digital camera to take a picture inside the duct. If there is visible dust, dirt or debris, you should have your ducts cleaned. SYSTEM MAINTENANCE There are a few things that you can do to maintain the cleanliness and efficiency of your HVAC system. Get good filters - ask your contractor for a recommendation. Clean/change the filters as needed (at least every two months). Even with properly cleaning and changing quality filters, the HVAC system will still become dirty over time. Have your system inspected every 2 years to determine whether your system needs to be cleaned again. Failure to clean all components of the system can result in re-contamination of the entire system, thus minimizing the benefits of cleaning. Just as you wouldn t only clean half of your living room floor, you also would not want to clean only part of your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. As customer awareness of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability grows, so does the interest in and demand for new technology. Heat pumps are the next big thing in terms of heating and cooling technology. HEAT PUMP GOVERNMENT FUNDS The heat pump serves as an air conditioner by absorbing heat from indoor air and pumping it outdoors. Contained inside the pumps are a coil which, in turn, contain a very cold liquid refrigerant. As indoor air passes over the indoor coil, the refrigerant-cooled coil absorbs heat from the air and so quickly cools that air. In addition to serving as an air conditioner, the heat pump contains a reversal valve which reverse the flow of refrigerant and thus allows the heat pump to serve as a heater during cold weather. Even at relatively cold outdoor temperatures, a heat pump is able to extract heat from outside to heat the home. They do not replace a furnace, but do reduce the need for one, especially with B.C.'s coastal climate For homeowners, an investment in a heat pump will save money in the long run as well as help the environment. We can also help our customers qualify for the federal government ECO energy rebates and will include a free energy evaluation with the installation of all furnaces and heat pumps. The Government of Canada encourages their use because in Canada's international commitment to reduce GHG emissions related to climate change.
