2 GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Monogram refrigerator is a side-by-side configuration with 25.7 cubic feet of storage space for non-dispenser models and 25.4 cubic feet for dispenser models. It is a truly built-in product that is designed to accept custom panels. The models listed in this manual come in six (6) configurations. A non-dispenser with and without an evaporator fan relay. A dispenser model with electronics that comes with a choice of a white or black dispenser recess front. A dispenser model with electronics that comes with a choice of a white or black dispenser recess front and with or without an evaporator fan relay. When connected it makes the fan run 100 % except during a defrost cycle, even if the cold control opens. The fan relay allows the models to meet certain energy requirements. - Currently, the product is shipped from the factory in two separate cartons. One carton contains the cabinet and the other contains the refrigeration unit. This facilitates delivery through doorways and elevators to the consumer's kitchens. Plans are now being made to ship the unit as one complete unit. This would save considerable time in assembly of the refrigeration unit to the cabinet. Because the product is shipped in two pieces, the cabinet and the refrigeration unit have separate model and serial numbers. The cabinet and refrigeration units have separate Mini-Manuals. The refrigeration's mini-manual is located behind the top grille, at the left side taped to the cooling unit's housing. The cabinet's is located behind the grille and taped to the top of the cabinet next to the guide rail. Page \ ~ II

3 INSTALLATION - After the product is delivered to the consumer's kitchen, the hood for the refrigeration unit is assembled to the top of the cabinet. Bolts and washers are used to secure the sides of the hood to the top of the cabinet and sheet metal screws are driven in along the rear. The cabinet is then rolled into position, leveled and permanently built-in, along with the kitchen cabinets. Panels, selected by the consumer, are installed on the doors and sides, as desired. o Rear View A 115 volt electrical receptacle is provided behind the left side of the hood. A copper water supply line is connected to the inlet of the water valve at the right side of the hood. The plastic water tubing, routed from the outlet of the water valve across the top rear corner of the hood, is connected to the fill tube grommet located in the left rear corner of the cabinet top. You must hook-up the water line and fill tube before the refrigeration unit is put into place. Page 2

4 INSTALLATION - (con't) The cabinet top trim is removed before the refrigeration unit is put into place. It is also easier to remove the hinge covers if the top ~rim has been removed. The top trim is held in place with two phillips head screws one in each end of the trim and comes from the factory already installed on the cabinet Refrigeration Unit - After the top trim is removed the refrigeration unit is positioned into the hood and secured with five (5) hex-head bolts which seat the air duct gasket on the top of the cabinet. It is very important that all 5 bolts be secured tightly. The rear bolts are hard to reach easily, so patience will be required when installing them. It is best to use a mirror and a light to see if the holes are aligned properly before tightening the bolts. Do not tighten the bolts all the way until all 5 bolts are started. It is very important that all bolts be tightened correctly. The center rear bolt if not tightened correctly will allow air to escape from the freezer compartment and cause a warm temperature condition, a high run time and possibly a sweat problem inside the refrigeration compartment. 5 INSTALLATION - (con't) After the refrigeration unit has been installed and bolted securely, the electric wiring harnesses must be connected. A wiring harness is connected to the water valve at the right side. There is a connector on the water valve and a connector corning from the refrigeration unit, these must be connected together. The left upper hinge cover must be removed to get to the cabinet wiring harness and the defrost sensor wiring harness, on models with a dispenser. The cabinet and sensor connectors are extended from the left side of the refrigeration unit. The refrigeration unit's wiring harness connector and the defrost sensor's wiring harness connector are connected to their respective harnesses corning from the cabinet. A ground wire must to the refrigeration left front edge. be attached unit at the k:... ~~~~... Ii==- _REFRIGERATION HARNESS _SENSOR HARNESS Mounting Bracket Before plugging the power cord into the electrical receptacle, turn the freezer cold control to the off position. Flange Now connect the power cord to the electrical receptacle at the left rear corner of the unit. Next turn the freezer cold control to position 5 and note if the unit starts and runs correctly. The cabinet's top left hinge cover is reinstalled and then the top trim is reinstalled. Next the front grille is installed. The grille is attached to the refrigeration unit's cover with two phillips head screws. The screws fit into the grille at the upper edge and are screwed into brackets attached to the cover's flange. page 4

6 GENERAL OPERATING INFORMATION Temperature Control Settings Separate temperature controls for the freezer and fresh food compartments are located up-front, in the respective compartments. Both controls have numbers 1 through 9 and initially should be set at position 5. The freezer temperature control regulates the compressor run time and has an "off" position. The freezer control is an electric sensor control and the capillary senses a change in the air temperature and controls the compressor run time. The fresh food control is an automatic air damper control that regulates the amount of cold air supplied to the fresh food compartment. It has positions 1 through 9 and initially should be set at position 5. The air damper is controlled by a sensing capillary that senses the temperature of the air in the fresh food and adjusts the air damper accordingly. Power saver switch - There is a power saver switch located in the fresh food control console. It is in the right front corner and has two positions. Complete Water and Ice System From the Pictorial, and in order: 1. The water valve location and tube routing. 2. The water supply tank 3. Ice maker 4. Ice cube mold 5. Auger and dispenser bucket 6. Water tubing routed through hinge and inside door panel to recess. 7. Water dispensing location Note the grille over the water tank. This grille directs the fresh food air over the water tank. If the tank is too cold, part of the grille louvers can be blocked with tape on the right side. 7 OPERATION OF UNIT The refrigeration unit contains the complete sealed refrigeration system, the evaporator fan, the condenser fan and the defrost system. Air flow System The condenser fan draws in room air through the grille in the front. Warm ai r, from the condenser and compressor, is expelled through the right side and the front of the grille. The evaporator fan supplies cold air down to the freezer and fresh food compartments through ducts located in the respective compartments. SIDE VIEW Cold air is distributed into the freezer compartment through louvers in the front of the freezer compartment above the freezer control. The temperature control capillary is located in the freezer supply air path. Accordingly, the compressor run time is regulated by the freezer supply air temperature. Warm air is returned to the evaporator through a duct at the bottom rear and partition in the back of the freezer compartment. TOP VIEW FREEZER FRESH FOOD SUPPLY AIR In the fresh food compartment freezer air is also directed over to the fresh food compartment via a channel in the front. Cold air passes through the thermostatically controlled air damper and is directed back to the rear of the compartment and out through this same channel and down into the compartment. Warm air is returned to the evaporator through a passage between the fresh food and freezer liner wall. The air is directed to evaporator via 6 fresh food air returns located in the lower left liner wall. As the air is being returned to the evaporator it passes over the fresh food control capillary end which is placed in the air path via a hole and grommet through the liner wall.the damper senses temperature changes and supplies cold air on demand. 8 Defrost Drain System 1. Drain Tube and Auxilary condenser Defrost water from the drain trough, under the evaporator, flows through a tube that extends to the defrost water pan at the right side of the refrigeration unit. In addition to warm air from the condenser fan flowing across the pan, the auxiliary condenser, positioned under the bottom of the pan, helps evaporate the accumulated defrost water. For access to the defrost heater and the drain trough heater, the evaporator must be completely removed. There is a piece of styrofoam between the evaporator coils and the housing on the right side. This piece of styrofoam may fall down when removing the evaporator and must be replaced when reinstalling. 2. Defrost Heater The defrost heater is positioned into the right side and rear of the evaporator and held securely by brackets at each end. 3. Drain Trough Heater The drain trough heater is positioned on the bottom of the drain trough. The heater is imbedded in an aluminum sheet, and the sheet adheres to the bottom of the trough. The heater can be removed by peeling the aluminum sheet off the drain trough. 4. Defrost Thermostat and Fan Delay Thermostat The defrost thermostat and the fan delay thermostat are mounted, one above the other, to the front of the evaporator. The defrost fan delay is connected in series with the evaporator fan motor. The thermostat closes at 25 degrees and opens at 45 degrees. The thermostat delays the fan for about 10 minutes after a defrost to allow the evaporator to pull down sufficiently. These thermostats must be removed from the evaporator when removing the evaporator from the housing. Page 7 l DRAIN TROUGH / EVAPORATOR HOUSING DRAIN TROUGH HEATER

9 Electrical System.. 1R10813 There are 4 different wiring configurations on the 6 models. The schematics shown represent the 4 configurations. A short explanation will be needed to clarify the diagrams. 1. On models presently sold in California there is an evaporator fan relay which controls the run time of the evap fan. The fan runs 100% except when the unit is in defrost. This relay is found on both dispenser and non-dispenser models. Models affected are: Cabinet Non-Disp BIS42CKB Disp BISB42EL BISW42EL unit BCS42CKB BCS42EL " There is a new model which will eliminate the relay and will be sold universally - The Defrost control timer has been changed from a 10 hr - 35 min timer to a 12 hr - 35 min timer. The model affected will be: Cabinet unit Disp BIS42ELD BCS42ELC BCS42CKC - NO RELAY.. (2) (2) (2) (2) (0) BCS42CKB -.. WITH RELAY 2. On all other models there will not be an evaporator fan relay, and the only difference will be whether the unit has a dispenser. The models affected are: Non-Disp Disp Cabinet BIS42CKC BISB42EK BISW42EK unit BCS42CKC BCS42EK " 3. The ladder diagrams are basically the same for all models except for differences noted above. 10 Dispenser The dispenser models are also equipped with electronics. The electronics found on the Monogram models are the same as found on a standard side by side. The electronics portion of the system is included in the mini-manual for that model. You can also reference Part # 162D2928P001 for electronic control console removal, status check list, and control board connections. ~I Do not remove ~--..,.- Freezer Door Panel Trim Removal of Dispenser Recess To remove the dispenser recess from the freezer door, you must first remove the freezer door handle which also serves as trim and panel rail. The handle is held in place with 8 phillips head screws. Do not remove LOWER SUPPORT FOR UPPER PANEL After removing the handle, the recess front cover panel must be pried loose from the outer door. It is held in place with double back sealing tape. Pull the cover forward and using a putty knife work down the insi8e of the cover, pushing back the double back tape as you go. The cover will also be held by guide post but these will slip out of the holes easily. After the cover has been freed from the tape it is still being held in place by the lower panel's upper support rail. Slide the upper decorative panel out of the rails, and set aside. Page 9

11 Removal of Dispenser Recess con't DISPENSER RECESS COVER r- LOWER SUPPORT FOR UPPER / upper Panel's - Lower support Rail The upper panels lower support rail is held in place with 4 screws across the bottom of the rail. To remove the recess cover f rom the trim, remove three screws from the upper panels lower support rail, starting from the hinge side. Leave the last screw in place and after unhooking the terminal block connection behind the cove r, rota te the rai I clock-wise and remove the recess cover. -, LOWER SUPPORT FOR UPPER PANEL Recess Removal To remove the recess completely, first remove the 12 screws holding the dispenser recess in place. Also remove the ground screw located to the left of center above the recess cover. When these screws are removed the recess must be pushed up as far as it will go and then pulled out at the bottom.. Pull the recess out from the bottom first allowing the time delay and insulation to clear the opening. The time delay is the lowest part on the recess, inside the freezer door, and tends to hang on the lower part of the recess opening. If this happens, feel under the recess and pull the time delay over the edge. You can also access the time delay through the rear access panel on the freezer door inner panel. Page 10 I

12 Recess Removal con't The whole recess will now be available to work on. The repair procedure is the same as standard side by side refrigerators with recess dispensers. Most of the recess parts can be reached by removing the ~ear access panel on the freezer door's inner liner. The access panel is held at the top by two snap on clips which can be easily pulled free from the upper edge of the access opening. Once the snaps are free the panel can be raised up and off of the bottom holding clips. Reinstalliing the Dispenser Recess - To reinstall the dispenser recess, you should use the same procedure as the removable but in reverese order. If insulation hangs on the bottom edge of the opening tap the bottom with the heel of the hand and the recess will pop into place. Make sure edges are sealed to avoid air leaks into the freezer. When reinstalling th~ recess, make sure that all sensors and components are returned to initial locations for proper operation. Page 11

13 Defrost Control The defrost control is located in the mid front of the refrigeration unit behind the center baffle. The control is mounted to a bracket at the right side of the evaporator housing. To remove the control you must first remove the center baffle which is attached with three (3) screws. Refrigeration unit The refrigeration unit must be removed for access to all other electrical components. The unit weighs more than 100-pounds and requires 2 persons for safe removal. A label on the front of the unit outlines the removal procedure. On the models being discussed, the evaporator housing is on the left side of the refrigeration unit, and extends to the rear of the unit. The defrost control is in the center and attached to the evaporator housing. The drain tube and drain pan are in. the middle of the refrigeration unit behind the defrost control. The wiring connectors for the evaporator fan, defrost heater, thermostats, and drain trough heater are located in a junction box that is attached to the right side of the evaporator housing just above the drain tube and drain pan. The condenser is on the right side of the refrigeration unit. The condenser fan is behind the condenser and the compressor is located behind the condenser fan. CENTER BAFFLE ACCESS COVER Page 12

14 Evaporator Fan - The evaporator fan assembly can be accessed after removing the evaporator housing front cover. The wiring harness will have to be removed from the front cover before it can be removed. The harness is held in place with two (2) phillips head screws in two (2) holding clips. The cover is held in place with four (4) phillips head screws. There is a gasket attached to the cover to seal between the cover and the housing. Four spacers are provided which fit onto the screws to ensure proper spacing between cover and housing. Once the cover is removed the fan assembly is exposed. There are four (4) phillips head screws holding the fan assembly in place. These screws are located in each corner of the evaporator fan assembly and attached to the evaporator housing side walls. Evaporator - The evaporator is exposed once the evaporator fan and housing have been removed. To remove the evaporator assembly all wiring grommets must be removed. The defrost thermostat and the defrost fan delay must also be removed because these are mounted one above the other to the left front side of the evaporator. The defrost heater and the drain trough heater connection must be disconnected if the evaporator is to be remove from the housing. The drain tube must be disconnected from the evaporator. The drain tube is connected through a hole on the right side of the evaporator housing. The tube is held in place with a clip and a phillips head screw. The evaporator can now be pulled from the housing. You should carefully lift up on the evaporator while removing so the drain trough does not catch on the air duct opening in the bottom of the housing. Page 13

15 Refrigeration System The refrigeration system consists basically of: o a reciprocating type compressor - Most models are using a Matsushita, rated at 1191 BTU/hr o a fin-and-tube type evaporator with a header o a fin-and-tube type condenser o an auxiliary condenser All of these components are available for replacement separately. Copper tubing is used throughout the refrigeration system except for the compressor case and its tubing stubs. Accordingly, in many instances where a leak develops, a repair can be made without having to order a replacement component. Fresh Food Light Shield The fresh food light shield can be removed by holding the light shield at the rear and pushing forward, at the same time pulling down from the rear. There are two tabs in the rear of the liner which hold the light shield in place. Once removed, the lights, and fresh food control housing are accessable. Door Hinges and Closure Mechanism To remove the fresh food door, first remove the grille and the cabinet top trim. Next, remove the upper hinge cover, and loosen the top hinge screws. Remove the top hinge. Then, as you open the door lift it off of the bottom hinge. The door closure is the same type as is used on other side by side models. It uses the cam closure. The freezer door is removed the same way except the wire harness at the top and the water fill tube at the bottom must be disconnected first on dispenser models There is a cover over the fill tube on the hinge bottom which must be remove before removing the door.
