How does it work? Recycle to earn Green Points This pack contains a recycling guide so you know exactly what can and cannot be recycled in West Norfolk. We measure the amount of rubbish and recycling produced by each of five communities in West Norfolk; when rubbish is going down and recycling is going up we award members of that community Green Points that go towards their community s total. Earn Green Points for your recycling efforts Do more and earn extra Green Points You will be able to earn more Green Points for your community by taking extra actions, reporting what you have recycled and reducing contamination. Head to the website at to get involved and tell us what you ve done. Go online and earn more Green Points
What are the rewards? Rewards for you Every month the resident who has earned the most Green Points for their community will receive a 50 voucher, with two runners up each receiving a 25 voucher. With 15 prizes given away each month there s lots of chances for you to win if you recycle! There are 15 vouchers to be won every month Rewards for your community The more Green Points you and your neighbours earn for your community, the more money you ll receive to donate to a local charity project. After 12 months there will be 6,000 to split between the five communities, with the community that has earned the most Green Points receiving the biggest share. You can view the charity shortlist online and vote for your favourite at to decide where the money goes. Vote for local community projects to receive a share of 6,000
Know your bins Your green recycling bin GREEN GREY Your green bin is for recycling and is collected on alternate weeks. BROWN If you have joined the garden waste scheme, your brown bin is for garden waste and is collected on alternate weeks. Need more information? Call West Norfolk Council on or visit to request a replacement bin, report a missed collection or to find out what the collection dates are in your area. Your grey bin is for food waste and is collected every week BLACK Your black bin is for general waste and is collected on alternate weeks. Please recycle all the items below using your green recycling bin. Items should be placed into your bin loose as plastic bags are not recyclable! Newspapers, magazines & telephone directories Paper & clean cardboard Plastic bottles (such as drinks, detergent, shampoo & plastic milk bottles (leave the lids on)) Steel & aluminium food & drinks cans Empty aerosols Glass bottles & jars (leave the tops on) Plastic food pots, tubs & trays (such as yoghurt pots, ice cream containers & margarine tubs) Waxed cartons & Tetra Paks (such as those used for juices and soups) Foil & foil trays Shredded paper Envelopes (including window type), greetings cards & junk mail Wrapping paper * these items can be taken to Norfolk County Council Recycling Sites. Please, none of these! The following items cannot be recycled and putting these in your green bin may mean that it cannot be collected. Plastic/carrier bags Glass such as drinking glasses, Pyrex ware, & broken window panes * Clothes, shoes and bedding * Food waste (please put this in your food bin) Garden waste (this can be collected via the brown bin scheme) Small electrical items * Disposable nappies Batteries * Books * Rinse and recycle! Please rinse food residue from your recycling before putting it in your green bin. Food degrades the quality of recyclable items and may mean they can t be recycled at all!
Your grey food waste bin and kitchen caddy Your brown garden waste bin Food waste is collected every week, so using your food waste bin correctly is the best way to make sure your bins don t smell! Use your kitchen caddy to collect food inside your property before transferring it to your food waste bin. What food can you recycle? The food waste bin is for all food products. The following are examples of the sorts of things you may put into it: Cooked food Vegetable peelings Leftover pet food Tea bags & coffee grounds Egg shells Bones & shellfish Fruit cores & peel Dairy products None of these, please! Plastic carrier bags Any packaging Non food products Runny oils or fats Pet waste Line your caddy! To keep your bin and caddy clean you may want to use liners, however, you can only use compostable liners that display the compostable logo or newspaper. These can be bought at council offices and other outlets (full list at For only 47 a year you can join the garden waste scheme and be provided with a brown garden waste bin apply online at or call West Norfolk Council on Alternatively, you can compost your garden waste at home or take it to the Norfolk County Council household recycling centre free of charge. What goes in the brown bin? Grass & hedge clippings Twigs & small branches Cut flowers Windfall fruit Leaves Prunings from shrubs Shredded paper None of these, please! Soil Stones or gravel Seed trays or flower pots Kitchen or food waste Pet litter Your black rubbish bin Anything that cannot be recycled in your green bin, food waste bin or brown bin should be placed into your black rubbish bin. This bin is collected alternate weekly and is sent for disposal so using it as little as possible is best!
With your help, we aim to make West Norfolk a clean place to live, work and visit. To do this we need to recycle as much as we can. Follow the instructions inside to start earning Green Points and get rewarded for your recycling efforts. Your activation code is WN98721 Got a question? Get in touch!
