2 ELEMENTAL CREATIONS Brass and Clay represents a unique collaboration between some of today s most important Italian designers and bathroom producers. Though these two industries sit side by side in any bathroom design, the world of the brass worker and the potter could not be more diverse. Here for your convenience we combine the two worlds of Brass and Clay. Central to brass production is the forging of molten metal followed by its mould casting and machining. The manufacture of ceramic, on the other hand, is characterised by the mould drying of raw clay slip which is then glazed before being baked in an oven to set. Such are the time-consuming and often arduous processes which lead to the formation of items we recognise as taps, showers and sanitary ware. If the use of moulds and fire is common to both industries, this is where the similarities end since the manual and artisanal skills required to create the final products are, in fact, polar opposites. Whereas one entails force and mechanical working, the other requires a practised eye and delicate human touch. Consequently the areas of concentration for these two opposing skill-sets are often contained within particular geographical regions, due to tradition, the presence of natural resources and local economic requirements. 3 Novara noun: a metal alloy made of copper and ELEMENT zinc, the proportions of which can be varied to create brasses of different properties. Brass from Novara For the brass element of the range, there was only one place to go. Situated in the Piedmont region of northwest Italy, Novara has approximately 104,000 inhabitants and is an important commercial centre within the Padan Plain or Po Valley. Well known for its agricultural heritage, in particular the cultivation of rice and maize, extensive industrialised irrigation of the area in the 1900s created an upsurge in metallurgical production which resulted in it becoming the central focus of the Italian tap industry. The subsequent proliferation of factories and workshops making all manner of faucets and water fittings has encouraged excellence and stimulated innovation with traditional craftsmanship working in harmony with modern technologies to produce designs which embody that hard to define yet instantly recognisable quality, Italian style. Civita Castellana Clay from Civita Castellana Thanks to the geology of the region with its abundance of natural raw materials, it comes as no surprise that Civita Castellana has long been regarded as the Italian centre for pottery and our favoured source for the sanitary ware side of the range. The town, located in the Province of Viterbo in central Italy about 65 kilometres (40 miles) north of Rome, is perched on a spur of volcanic tuff rock between the mouths of two tributaries of the river Treja. Even back in the 8th Century B.C., the area was gaining a reputation for excellence in the forming of functional and decorative vessels, a skill made possible due to plentiful supplies of quality clay and water. Centuries of long practice and refinement of technique with skills passed down through the generations led to the setting up of early ceramic factories in the 1800s reinforcing that entrepreneurial spirit which continues to this very day in our partners desire to challenge material boundaries and set new industry standards. 33
