Prevents children from altering settings when the heater is in use or activating the heater when turned off. This function will automatically operate the appliance before the programmed start time in order to preheat the room. Energy saving feature designed to control the room temperature and prevent the room from overheating. Temporarily changes the heater operation from on to off, or vice versa, until the next programmed setting is reached. Allows you to program the appliance to come on for two separate periods each day, one in the morning and one in the evening. The dual timer feature means you can set and forget your heater. When the air (fan) filter becomes covered with dust the filter indicator will flash indicating that cleaning is necessary. Raise humidity in the room for extra comfort with the humidifier tray can be filled with water as required. Safety devices Overheat switch Fusible link Flame failure device Electrical fuse Power failure This device automatically cuts the gas off if the heater exceeds a certain temperature. This is normally caused by an obstruction in front of the louvres, or a blocked fan filter. If this switch operates, turn the unit off, remove obstruction (clean filters) and let the unit cool before restarting. Back up to the overheat switch. If a fusible link cuts off the gas a service call is required to repair the appliance and replace the link. If the flame goes out during operation, this device cuts off the unit (lockout). To reset, turn the unit off, then on again. If this happens repeatedly a service call is required. The electrical circuits are protected by an electric fuse. When the fuse blows, the heater will not operate. A service call is required as the fuse needs to be replaced. In the event of a power failure or power cut, the gas valves will automatically close. After the power is reinstated the appliance will automatically restart. The time of day will need to be reset to the current time. 5

This heater must not be located directly below a power socket outlet (potential fire hazard). Do not allow anyone to post articles through into the heater. Children should be supervised at all times to ensure they do not play with the heater. Hand or body contact with the heater must be avoided. Do not allow anyone to sit, lean or sleep directly in front of the heater. Do not cover or place articles on or against the heater. It must not be used for any purpose other than heating. Always turn the heater OFF after use. Keep the heater away from flammable materials. Do not allow curtains or other combustible materials to come into contact with the appliance. 7

8 Safety Do not spray aerosols while the appliance is operating. Most contain butane gas which can be a fire hazard if used near the appliance. Do not restrict the warm air discharge by placing articles directly in front of the heater. Keep flammable materials, trees shrubs etc. away from flue terminal. Areas subject to heavy snow keep snow clear of the flue terminal. Do not unplug the heater while it is still in use or while the fan is on. Do not turn the heater OFF by unplugging it from the wall. A dedicated 240 V 10 Amp power point must be used with this heater. Do not use double adaptors to operate this appliance. Do not place containers of liquid on top of the heater. Liquid spillage can cause extensive damage to the heater and may result in electric shock. This heater must not be built-in. 9 General information Before operation Read these instructions to get an overview of how to operate, maintain and service your Rinnai Energysaver. Electrical connection The electrical connection is to the right hand side of the heater (passes out of the rear of the appliance). A 3-pin plug is supplied, this must be connected to a dedicated earthed power point. The power point must be to the side of the heater and a maximum of 1500 mm (cord supplied is 1500 mm). It must not be above the unit as this is a potential fire hazard. If the supply cord is damaged and requires replacing, it must be replaced by a licensed tradesperson. This must be a genuine replacement part available from Rinnai. Filters During peak operating periods the filters should be cleaned weekly, however if the filter warning indicator flashes, immediately turn off the appliance and clean filters before further use. Refer to `Care of your Energysaver. Floor protection AT LEAST 750 mm The Rinnai Energysaver discharges a large volume of warm air at a low level. Heat emanating from the heater may over time affect the appearance of some materials used for flooring, such as, carpet, vinyl, cork or timber. This may be amplified if the air contains cooking vapours or cigarette smoke. To avoid this occurring, it is recommended that a mat be placed in front of the appliance. Humidifier tray Ensure the access panel and humidifier tray are in place before using your Energysaver. Rinnai recommend you fill the tray to the water level indicator as marked taking care not to overfill. 9

10 General information Installation by a licensed tradesperson Ensure your installer talks to you about the use and care of this appliance and that you understand these instructions. They also need to complete their installer details at the back of this manual and leave the manual with you. Improper installation, adjustment, service or maintenance can cause serious injury, property damage or death. Please ensure your installation is completed by a licensed tradesperson. Maintenance/servicing Rinnai has a maintenance, service and spare parts network with personnel who are fully trained and equipped to give the best advice on your Rinnai appliance. If your appliance needs maintenance or servicing for repair, please call Rinnai ( ) from a land line and select option one for a service centre in your area. For reliable operation the Rinnai Energysaver should be checked (by a licensed tradesperson) every two years (including inspection of the flue system). If located in a particularly dusty environment or subject to excess lint, for example dog hair or where there are newly laid carpets then annual maintenance would be beneficial. Regular maintenance or servicing is not covered by the Rinnai warranty. Do not attempt to carry out any maintenance or service work other than that mentioned in the troubleshooting section. If you have any other faults or problems, please refer to your installer or call Rinnai. Odours coming from your heater When the heater is operated for the first time or after long periods of non use a slight odour may be emitted. This is normal. If odours persist switch off the heater and contact Rinnai. Do not use aerosols, paint, polishes etc. while the heater is in use as this may cause unpleasant odours. Outside flue terminal On cold days steam may be discharged from the flue terminal. This is normal with high efficiency appliances such as the Energysaver range and does not indicate a fault. Regularly check the outside flue terminal to make sure it is clear of plant growth and from other obstructions. 10

11 Heater operation Turning the heater on Press the ON/OFF button. The indicator will glow green, the spark generator will be heard before the burner ignites and the indicator glows red (indicates the heater is alight). When the heater warms up the fan will automatically start. If the heater does not ignite, there may be air remaining in the gas supply line. If this is the case, the spark generator will only continue for 15 seconds. After this, it will be necessary to press the ON/OFF button OFF then ON again. If the appliance fails to ignite after four attempts, contact Rinnai as a service call may be required. Turning the heater off Press the ON/OFF button and the indicator light will go out. The fan will continue to operate (to cool the appliance) for several minutes after the burner has gone out. Do not unplug the heater while the fan is still operating. Adjusting the room temperature Pressing the and buttons will change the preset temperature by increments of 1 C. Temperature will be displayed to confirm that the function has been initiated. The temperature can be preset to: L (Low) continuous combustion on low C (in 1 C steps) combustion rate varies to maintain selected temperature H (High) continuous combustion on high The room temperature sensor is located behind the Energysaver so the temperature on the display may vary slightly from the actual room temperature. 11

12 Heater operation Economy mode The Economy function is an energy saving feature designed to control the room temperature and prevent the room from overheating. The Economy mode can only be operated when the heater is turned on and remains set until deactivated. Press the Economy button to start the economy function, the Economy indicator will glow. Press the Economy button once more to switch off the economy function. Child lock The Child Lock function will help prevent accidental operation as well as prevent small children from altering the controls. To activate, press the Child Lock button, the function is activated immediately and the Child Lock indicator will glow. To deactivate hold the Child Lock button down for two seconds and the Child Lock indicator will go out. During normal operation the Child Lock may be activated and all controls (other than the off switch) will be locked. Deactivating the Child Lock releases all the controls. If the Child Lock is activated while the heater is turned off, then all functions will be locked (including turning the heater on) until deactivated. Fan operation The fan turns on automatically when the heater warms up and when it cools down. This helps prevent cold draughts and maximises efficiency. 12

13 Setting the clock and timers When the appliance is first plugged in or after a power failure, the digital display will show --:-- Setting the clock (example: setting the clock to 10:35am) Press the Set Times button once, the Clock indicator will flash. Press and hold the button, the minutes will change first followed by hours. Release the button when AM 10:00 shows on the digital display. Confirm you have selected AM, a small indicator on the left hand side of the digital display indicates the AM setting. Press and hold the button again and release when display shows AM 10:35. If you go past the time you can use the button to change the time setting in reverse. Press the Set Times button five times to lock in the set time. The Clock and Timer indicators will go out and a small indicator on the display will flash to show the clock is operating. The display will dim approximately 10 seconds after the last control. Setting the ON/OFF timers Before programming the Timers you must ensure the clock has been set to the correct time. If during setting no buttons are pressed for one minute the setting sequence will automatically cancel and the display will revert to the normal display. Example, programming Timer 1 to heat the room by 7:10 am and finish at 9:00 am Press the Set Times button twice. The digital display will show AM 6:00 and the Timer 1 indicator will flash. Press the button until AM 7:00 appears, release the button, then press again until AM 7:10 appears. Press the Set Times button again, the Timer 1 OFF indicator will flash. Press the until AM 9:00 appears. Press the Set Button three times to lock in the programmed time. The digital display will show the current time. Timer 2 is programmed in the same way, remember to ensure that the Timer 2 indicator is flashing when you program the desired setting. button The programmed time must be selected and locked-in within one minute of the timer indicators flashing otherwise the programmed times will not be retained in the system memory. Don t worry if you make a mistake during programming. By pressing the Set Times button you can cycle through the different programming options (clocks and timers) and change if required. 13

14 Operating the timers The timers can be programmed to operate for any two time periods in 24 hours. Before operating the timer, the clock must be set and a timer start and finishing time must be entered. The two timers operate in the same way. To select the timer(s) to commence heating Press the Set Times button and check the time shown on the digital display is correct. Press the Set Times button again to stop the flashing on the timer indicator(s). Check the ON and OFF times, for both timers if necessary. Press the ON/OFF button to operate the heater without the Clock and Timer indicators flashing. The ON indicator will glow green. Select the desired temperature setting. Press the Timer 1 and/or Timer 2 button(s). The timer indicator(s) will glow and the heater will remain on standby until one hour prior to the time programmed into the selected Timer(s) is reached. When this time is reached, the Timer indicator will flash and the heater will operate. Set and forget operation Your heater can be operated to alternate between the timers automatically during cold weather by selecting Timer 1 and Timer 2 buttons together. Both timer indicators will glow and the appliance will remain on standby between the timer periods. Power disruption If there is a power failure (or if the unit is switched off at the wall) the system memory will retain the Timer programs but the clock will stop at the time the power goes off. The clock will restart when the power comes back on, but the time will be slow by the duration of the power failure. 14

15 Operation: Other features Override This is used to manually override the timers so the heater can be operated outside the timer settings. When selected, the Override indicator will flash. To deactivate press the Override button again, the indicator light will turn off and the heater will return to standby mode. Preheat Automatically functions in conjunction with the timers. When a timer is selected, the heater may operate anywhere within an hour prior to the programmed on time. The preheat function ensures the room reaches the desired temperature by the programmed on time. This is achieved by sensing the room temperature one hour prior to start. Humidifier tray Your heater is fitted with a tray behind the air outlet so you can humidify the air. To fill the tray, open the access panel as shown, and using the spout built into the access panel fill the tray to the water level indicator as marked taking care not to overfill. The high efficiency of the Energysaver causes condensate to form in the flue system, this drains into the humidifier tray. If you notice water in the tray that you have not placed there, don t be alarmed, this is normal. If the humidifier tray is used, it will need filling approximately once a day during the heating season. Humidifier tray may become hot Do not fill the humidifier tray while the heater is operating Do not fill the humidifier tray for at least five minutes after the heater stops Do not operate the heater without the humidifier tray and access panel in place Vertical louvre adjustment When the heater is turned off the warm air flow direction may be altered by carefully inserting a screwdriver or similar tool and gently bending the vertical louvres to the left or right. These louvres are not designed to be adjusted more than six times as the louvres will weaken and break. 15

16 Care of your Energysaver The following information will keep your Energysaver looking good and working efficiently. Before you clean any part of the Energysaver, ensure the appliance is turned off and has cooled down. All parts of the heater can be cleaned using a soft damp cloth and mild detergent, DO NOT use solvents If the humidifier tray gets dirty, wash in warm soapy water Fan filter To protect the appliance from dust particles or lint, a filter is situated at the rear of the heater. If the filter becomes blocked, the filter indicator will flash to indicate that is should be cleaned. The build up of dust on the filter reduces the air flow through to the heater. This reduces the heater s efficiency and can lead to the appliance shutting down. Regular (weekly) filter cleaning during the heating season will stop this from happening. If you do not clean the filter at regular intervals and the Filter indicator is allowed to remain flashing, the appliance will stop (ON indicator will flash and the display will show error code 14). The filter will need to be cleaned before operating the appliance again. Do not remove the filter when the appliance is operating Do not use the heater with the Filter indicator flashing as this may cause overheating How to clean the fan filter Dust: use a duster or vacuum to remove dust Oil: wash the fan filter with a mild detergent, drain off the water and dry the filter Remove filter by pulling straight up and out from appliance. WARNING Ensure the fan filter is fitted back into the appliance after cleaning. DO NOT operate the appliance without the filter in place. 16

17 Error code messages The Energysaver has built-in technology to continually monitor its own performance. If a fault occurs, an error message will flash on the digital display on the control panel. This assists with diagnosing the fault and may enable you to overcome a problem without a service call. Code Displayed Probable Cause Suggested Solution 11 Ignition failure 12 Flame failure As above. In all cases, you may be able to clear the error message by turning the heater off then on again. If the error message remains or returns when the heater is used again, contact Rinnai or a Rinnai Service Centre. Faults caused by an insufficient gas supply, gas quality, installation or operation errors are not covered by the Rinnai warranty. 17

18 Troubleshooting Check the following information before making a service call as some performance characteristics are a normal part of operation. If you are still unsure or concerned after reading this section, please contact Rinnai. Using the heater for the first time or after long periods of non-use Ignition may not occur the first time it is operated due to air in the gas pipes. If ignition does not occur within approximately 60 seconds the appliance will attempt to re-light. If ignition does not occur the unit will switch off automatically. Try operating the heater again if this occurs. The heater may make noises after ignition or switching off. This is due to expansion and contraction of the internal components and is normal. General heater characteristics Characteristic When turning on Warm air does not start when the burner lights. Smoke or strange smells are produced when first operating the appliance after installation. Explanation The room air fan starts automatically after a short delay. This is to allow the appliance to warm up, helping avoid cold draughts. This is caused by grease, oil or dust within the appliance. This will stop after a short time. Sharp clicking noises at ignition, or when the unit thermostat modulates to a lower or higher setting, or shuts down. This is expansion and contraction of the heat exchanger and is a normal part of operation. During operation Clunking noise when the thermostat operates. This is the sound of the gas valve opening and closing to regulate the flow of gas. When turning off Fan continues to run after the heater is turned off. This is to remove residual heat from within the appliance. This stops once the unit cools. Other Steam is discharged from the flue terminal outside. High efficiency appliances tend to discharge water vapour on cold days. This is normal. Heater doesn t start when the ON button is pushed and thermostat is on High. Check timer. Timer must be in the OFF position for manual operation. Room temperature is hotter than the High setting. Timers Timer(s) do not operate at the set time. They may be inactivated or incorrectly programmed. Check timers are set correctly and the clock is on the correct time. Timer operates for a short time and then cuts out. Room temperature may be higher than the set temperature. Increase temperature if desired. 18

20 Installer information The following section of this manual is intended for the licensed tradesperson installing the Energysaver. It should be used in conjunction with the Energysaver Flue Installation Manual. Before installation The Energysaver and supplied components (securing brackets, rear cover set and bolt pack) are supplied in one carton. Unpack the appliance and flue components (purchased and supplied separately) and check for damage. DO NOT install any damaged items. Check all components have been supplied and that you have the correct gas type. 23 Positioning, gas and electrical supply Positioning When positioning the unit, the main points governing location are flueing and warm air distribution. This heater must not be installed where curtains or other combustible materials could come into contact with the appliance. In some cases curtains may need restraining (refer p. 8 for clearance information). This heater is not recommended for installations in unusually dusty environments such as hair salons or where there are a large number of pets (will cause continual blockage of the fan filter). Gas supply The gas supply terminates outside the heater at the rear of the appliance. The gap required between the wall and the heater body is 85 or 200 mm depending if a back spacer set used. Gas pipe sizing must consider the gas input to this appliance as well as other gas appliances in the premises. The gas meter and regulator must be specified for the total gas rate. An approved sizing chart such as the one in NZS 5261 should be used. All foreign materials such as filings must be purged from the gas supply as they may cause the gas control valve to malfunction. Electrical supply The electrical connection is to the right hand side of the heater (passes out of the rear of the appliance). A 3-pin plug is supplied, this must be connected to a dedicated earthed power point. The power point must be to the side of the heater and a maximum of 1500 mm from the heater (cord supplied is 1500 mm). It must not be above the unit as this is a potential fire hazard. 24 Flueing: General IMPORTANT For all installations a Rinnai Energysaver flue system MUST BE used. The flue system must be fully assembled and secured in place before the heater is installed. For detailed flueing instructions refer to the Energysaver Flue Installation Manual supplied with all Rinnai Energysaver flue kits. Flue terminal locations Must be compliant with Clearances Required for Flue Terminals from NZS Flue terminal should be positioned away from flammable materials. Do not flue into natural draught flues or fireplaces Do not flue into other rooms, roof spaces or under floor spaces Flashings Are not part of the flue kits or components and must be specified. Clearance to combustibles All Energysaver flueing components have zero clearance EXCEPT for the flue transition connections (transition casting, elbow adaptor and vertical adaption transition), these components require a minimum clearance of 25 mm from combustible materials. Flue transition connections (circled) Due to the heat produced from the appliance, the first 300 mm from the back of the heater must be metal (not plastic). All Energysaver flueing will start with one of the flue transition connections above (metal construction). 24

25 Flueing: General Maximum length and number of bends Condensate Total flue length can be up to nine metres and contain a maximum of three 90 bends (90 bend = 1 m of length). The flue transition provides a connection between the flue spigot and air inlets of the heater with those of the flue system. For all flueing installations (except horizontal direct flueing) it is counted as a 90 bend. A condensate trap is required for any vertical flue installations to ensure condensate generated during combustion is trapped and drained to prevent it from entering the chamber. For horizontal and down and out installations there must be a continuous fall of at least 2. This equates to approximately 20 mm per metre to the termination point to drain condensate. For standard direct flueing the Rinnai flue kits have an inbuilt 2 fall. Rinnai flue components Co-axial Flue Pipe 900 mm, order lengths as required (can be cut to size). Vertical Adaptor Flue Kit, includes condensate trap. Back Spacer Kit, required for sideways and down and out flueing configurations (unless in-wall). Adds approximately 200 mm of extra depth. Direct and direct extended Flue runs directly from the appliance to the termination point in a horizontal direction. A: Direct B: Direct Extended Direct Flue Kit Direct Flue Kit Co-axial Flue Pipe 900 mm Sideways Flue runs along the left or right hand side of an internal wall behind the heater. If retrofitting and there is a requirement not to go in-wall, the flue can run alongside the wall. In these applications the flue is usually boxed in along the floor or behind a 125 mm false wall. If not going in-wall, flue configuration requires additional clearance off the wall Back Spacer Kit required. This adds approximately 200 mm of extra depth. Sideways Direct Flue Kit Co-axial Flue Pipe 900 mm Back Spacer Kit Sideways In-Wall Vertical Adaptor Kit Co-axial Flue Pipe 900 mm Wall Terminal External wall or roof termination with bend Flue runs directly from the appliance to a termination point further up the wall or vertically to a termination on the roof. Typical installation examples for this type of flue configuration is for Energysavers installed against solid brick walls, or where a direct flue terminal cannot be used (i.e. due to flue clearance restrictions). 27 Flueing: Installation configurations In-wall vertical The in-wall vertical co-axial system is installed within a stud wall (minimum cavity depth of 90 mm) and is run vertically upwards. This type of installation is usually completed at the framing stage. This adds approximately 200 mm of extra depth. Flue must terminate 300 mm above the ground. 28 Energysaver installation Connect Energysaver to the gas pipe Remove the plastic protection cap from the threaded gas inlet located at the rear of the appliance. Position the appliance gas inlet in line with the gas supply from the wall. Attach gas supply pipe to the appliance gas inlet and tighten (finger tight). Appliance has a R½ male fitting (15 mm). Mark flue position On the wall behind the appliance, mark the vertical centre line of the heater. Mark the flue penetration position in accordance with the instructions in the Energysaver Flue Installation Manual. Undo the gas connection and remove the heater. Cut flue penetration(s). Attach securing (wall) brackets 1. Mark out the securing bracket screw holes using the heater centre line as reference. 29 Energysaver installation Install flue Install the flue as per the Energysaver Flue Installation Manual. Return the Energysaver to its final position and connect to the flue. Connect gas supply line and fully tighten connection. Use a soapy solution to test all gas connections. If a leak is present bubbles will form at the leak point. When finished remove any residue with a rag. Prevent any soapy solution from coming into contact with the electrical components. Fit rear panels Fit left and right cover panels to the rear of the appliance by clipping the panels onto the location tabs then fastening into position using the two 6 g x 8 mm self tapping screws. Clip the top panel onto the wall brackets at the same time as attaching it to the heater, secure in place with screws provided. WARNING Before attempting to remove any panels ensure the heater is isolated from the mains power supply. To remove the front panel: Unscrew the five louvre retaining screws and carefully lift out the louvre assembly. Firmly grasp the front cover, lift up and away from the heater body, lifting the panel off from the location tags that affix and locate it to the heater body. Ensure you leave the completed checklist with the customer. Explain to the customer about the use and care of the unit and that they understand the instructions and operation of the Rinnai Energysaver. It is the responsibility of the installer to check that under normal conditions of the appliance, all flue gases are exhausted to the atmosphere and that there is no spillage of combustion gases into the room. If the appliance cannot be made to perform correctly, please contact Rinnai. 29
