1 TECHNICAL BULLETIN ELFOENERGY LARGE HIGH EFFICIENCY AIR-COOLED LIQUID CHILLER FOR OUTDOOR INSTALLATION WSAT-XEE SERIES Nominal cooling capacity from to kw ELFOEnergy LARGE is a highly energy efficient liquid chiller which is equipped with Scroll compressors, large heat-exchange surfaces and electronically controlled fans. Thanks to its excellent partial-load performance, its ESEER seasonal efficiency is at the top of its category, enabling great savings on management costs over the entire annual cycle. Furthermore, the standard EXCELLENCE version is in energy efficiency Class A at full-load. ELFOEnergy LARGE is also available in the PREMIUM compact version, which has been optimized to reduce on the initial investment. It can be equipped with several built-in accessories, like pump groups, an energy recovery device and an inertial buffer. THE DILEMMA OF MODERN SYSTEM ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS Air-conditioning systems in trade centres influence both the starting investment and monthly management costs, for the whole of their working lives. This theme is even more relevant in residential applications with centralised systems. Furthermore, maximum working flexibility requirements should be added to that, in serving different users while avoiding wasting energy and thus, money. Finally, there are several industrial applications which require chilled water as service fluid, process fluid or vector fluid for operator comfort and for conserving goods and enabling cycles to function correctly. For example, they require a separate system for primary air treatment. They make it possible to adopt various types of terminals in the served environment, from fan coil units exposed or integrated in the furnishings, up to radiant or induction systems. 4 ELFOENERGY LARGE ELFOEnergy LARGE TECHNOLOGY IS THE ENERGY REFERENCE POINT FOR LIQUID CHILLERS MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY IS ASSURED BETWEEN THE % AND THE % OF THE SYSTEM LOAD For maximum loads taking place only for a few hours of functioning per year. The high efficiency at partial loads of ELFOEnergy LARGE makes it much more competitive and efficient than other solutions. THE MODULAR SCROLL IS THE EXCELLENT SOLUTION FOR PARTIAL LOAD * EUROVENT (ESEER) supply times reference and ARI (IPLV) reference for seasonal efficiency calculations. ELFOEnergy LARGE uses Scroll-type high-efficiency compressors, with optimized spirals. VERY HIGH HEAT EXCHANGE EFFICIENCY Thanks to the external ELFOEnergy LARGE coils, equipped with wide frontal surfaces and reduced depth, the following is obtained: An improvement in the working temperature of the chiller circuit and, therefore, its efficiency, since the approach between the air temperature and the temperature of the chiller fluid inside the exchanger is reduced; A reduction in consumption by the fans, thanks to the reduced depth of the exchanger which decreases air flow renewal drops. Furthermore, the automatic fan speed control, supplied in series, minimises the air renewal air requirement to function correctly and therefore further reduces consumption; A decrease in the sound level, since greater surfaces enable slower air speed in the exchangers. ECOBREEZE ELECTRONICALLY-CONTROLLED FAN TECHNOLOGY The external axial fans are equipped with an innovative Winglet blade profile with an integrated deflector, which is able to increase aerodynamic efficiency. This results in a % reduction in consumption. The average acoustic emission is db less then traditional fans. Using ECOBREEZE the external rotary electric motor is operated by a continuous magnetic switching of the stator, induced by integrated electronic control. The advantages are: 0% increase in efficiency thanks to the brushless technology and the special electricity supply; Increase in the working life, thanks to the elimination of the brush wear; Reduction in the electrical consumption by the system, thanks to a drastic reduction of the inrush current for the fans obtained using the integrated Soft start function. Note: ECOBREEZE is supplied as standard in the EXCELLENCE version COMPLETELY AUTOMATIC FUNCTIONING The microprocessor controller manages functioning automatically in line with maximum efficiency criteria, enables up to units to be coordinated in a local network (Master-Slave function) and includes numerous safety functions and the management of any alarms. The interface terminal is equipped with a backlit graphic display and a multifunction access keyboard. The multi-level menu is protected by passwords which are differentiated by different user types. The daily / weekly clock programmer function is standard. 5 ELFOENERGY LARGE ELFOEnergy LARGE TECHNOLOGY ENABLES THE SYSTEM TO BE INDUSTRIALISED ELFOEnergy LARGE can be supplied complete with system components which are often provided as external to units. Thus reducing: Design time: all the accessories are created to guarantee the best overall performance; Installation costs: the accessories which are already connected manually, electrically wired and individually checked are ready to start working immediately; Dimension: integration of system members into the unit reduces technical spaces and increases the space available for other uses. The slim line structure enables it to be positioned even on terraces or in external service corridors. THE ON-BOARD PUMPS ARE VERSATILE, READY-FOR-USE AND RELIABLE The various solutions available are: Standard pump, with a wide range of available heads. Standard pump with emergency pump. The on-board microprocessor balances its working hours and in case of any breakdown signals the fault and automatically activates the reserve pump. HYDROPACK, the modular solution with two parallel pumps. Automatically reduces water flow in critical conditions, avoiding blocks due to overloading and consequential interventions by specialised technical personnel. It is very useful during start-up, during re-start after a pause in working (e.g. a weekend) or after a long period of inactivity. In case of any pump breakdowns, the unit continues to function with 0% of the nominal flow. EVEN THE STORAGE TANK AND THE PRIMARY CIRCUIT CAN BE INTEGRATED ON-BOARD A connection to the secondary use circuit is all that's needed. In this way, the system results even more simple and reliable. The units are complete with rapid connections on the hydraulic side, which further reduces set-up times by eliminating pipe threading operations. Furthermore, other system components are also available as accessories, such as hydraulic attachments reported on the external walls of the unit (as standard with pumps and/or storage tank) and the required water filter. IT EXPLOITS EXTERNAL AIR FOR COOLING WITHOUT ACTIVATING THE COMPRESSORS In the FREE-COOLING configuration, as soon as the external conditions enable it, the unit is able to cool the liquid reducing compressor functioning up to their complete withdrawal. 7 ELFOENERGY LARGE TECHNICAL UNIT FEATURES - EXCELLENCE VERSION COMPRESSOR Hermetic orbiting scroll compressor complete with motor over-temperature and over-current devices and protection against excessive gas discharge temperature. Fitted on rubber antivibration mounts and complete with oil charge. A oil heater is automatically switched on at the compressor shut-down to prevent oil dilution by the refrigerant. The compressors are connected in tandem on a single refrigerator circuit. They have bi-phase equalization of the oil and are equipped with cut-off bibcock. STRUCTURE Supporting structure realised in galvanised steel sheet able to supply excellent mechanical features and long-lasting resistance to corrosion. PANELLING External panels in pre-painted aluminium especially indicated in outdoor installation due to its superior resistance to corrosion avoiding periodic painting. Side panels are easily removable and allow complete access to unit components. Internal sound proof lining reduces sound pressure levels. INTERNAL EXCHANGER Direct expansion heat exchanger, braze-welded AISI stainless steel plates with large exchange surface and complete with external heat and anticondensate insulation. The exchanger comes complete with: - differential pressure switch, water side - antifreeze heater to protect the water side exchanger, preventing the formation of frost if the water temperature falls below a set value. EXTERNAL EXCHANGER Finned exchanger, made from copper pipes arranged in staggered rows and mechanically expanded for better adherence to the collar of the fins. The fins are made from aluminium with a special corrugated surface, set a suitable distance apart to ensure maximum heat exchange efficiency. The coils are complete with integral subcooling circuit which assures the correct refrigerant feeding of the expansion valve. FAN ECOBREEZE device (STD) Helical fans with sickle-shaped blades with "Winglets" at the end, coupled directly to electronic control (IP ), driven by the magnetic commutation of the stator. The brushless technology and the special supply increase both the life expectancy and the efficiency. As a result the electric consumption is reduced up to 0%. Fans are housed in aerodynamically shaped structures to increase efficiency and reduce noise level. The assembly is protected by accident prevention guards. The fans have the variable speed control. B - WATER LOW TEMPERATURE Configuration also known as "Brine". Enables a non-freezable solution to be cooled (for instance, water and ethylene glycol in appropriate quantities) up to a temperature of between + C and C. Includes: - Appropriate exchangers, complete with thick closed-cell insulation; - Electronic-type expansion valve, functional calibration and safety devices adapted to the particulars of use. In the selection phase, it is necessary to indicate the type of function required, and the unit will be optimised with: - Unit with single working set-point (only at low temperature) - Unit with double working set-point. The unit in this configuration have a different operation field, indicated on the previous pages. In the low temperature operation, some partialisation degrees could be not available. D - PARTIAL ENERGY RECOVERY Configuration which allows hot water production free-of-charge during the cooling function, thanks to the recovery of part of the condensation heat which would otherwise be disposed of into the external heat source. This configuration is also known as "desuperheating coil". It is made up of brazed-plate exchanger in AISI stainless steel which is ideal for recovering around a quarter of the heating capacity of the unit (equal to the sum of the cooling capacity and the absorbed power input of the compressors). 25 ELFOENERGY LARGE R - TOTAL ENERGY RECOVERY Configuration which allows hot water production free-of-charge during the cooling function, thanks to the total recovery of the condensation heat which would otherwise be discharge into the external heat source. This solution increases the overall efficiency of the system in all cases in which a high-level of hot water production is requested. It is made up of Stainless steel brazed plate heat exchanger, which is ideal for recovering the entire unit heating capacity (equal to the sum of the cooling capacity and the absorbed power input of the compressors), from the on-of type solenoid valves, the temperature sensors for the hot water circuit supply and return and the relative integrated logic controller with two partialisation steps. 26 ELFOENERGY LARGE FCD - DIRECT FREE-COOLING Configuration which enables great savings on the management costs of the system in applications which require chilled water even during cold seasons like, for instance, industrial processes, data centres, telecommunications, technological applications and trade centres. When the external air temperature is less than the temperature of the return water in the system, the FREE-COOLING system recovers coolness from outdoor and reduces the compressor working up to their being withdrawn completely. The higher the temperature of the chilled water in the system (e.g. - C instead of - C), the greater the field of application of the FREE-COOLING system and, therefore, the energy saving. USING UNFREEZABLE SOLUTIONS The FREE-COOLING configuration is particularly indicated in buildings where, at least at certain times of the year, the external air temperature also reaches very low values. For this reason, the liquid must be protected from the risk of freezing, typically by adding an appropriate anti-freeze substance such as ethylene glycol. The percentage of glycol in the solution depends on the minimum temperature value foreseen in the installation area, and in any case, remains within the main parameters of the system design. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION In comparison with standard units, Clivet units in the direct FREE-COOLING configuration also include: three-way switching valve with on/off regulation Finned water-air COIL exchanger (FREE-COOLING coil) additional outdoor air temperature sensor and control logic dedicated flush hydraulic connections. MANAGEMENT LOGIC There are three main function modes, which can be differentiated in essence by the position of the three-way switching valve and by the number of active compressors. T AE C (A) SUMMER SEASON In the summer, with external air temperatures greater than the return temperature of the system liquid, the three-way valve is switched in such a way as to exclude the FREE-COOLING coils. The cooling of the liquid is referred to the direct expansion circuit, via the workings of the compressors as in a traditional chiller. (B) INTERMEDIATE SEASON During the intermediate season, or rather when the external air temperature is a little less than the temperature of the return water in the system, when the system senses that the external air temperature conditions are favourable: it switches the position of the three-way valve forcing the solution to transit through the FREE-COOLING coils before reaching the evaporator; it puts the fans to their maximum speed to exploit as much as possible the solution cooling using the outdoor air ; it undertakes the initial cooling of the solution in a "natural and free" way; it supplies any missing capacity through the chiller cycle, using the compressors functioning partially (the absorbed power input is proportional to the level of partialisation). In case of an increase in the external air temperature, the microprocessor automatically converts the unit functioning to the summer setting, guaranteeing the conditions requested by the user at all times. EEV TW out C EEV TW in C T A AE C (C) WINTER SEASON During the winter season, with the temperature of the external air lower than the temperature of the return water in the system, the system senses that conditions are favourable for the FREE-COOLING function: the three-way valve is switched as in the previous case, forcing the solution to transit through the FREE-COOLING coils before reaching the evaporator; the external air temperature brings the solution to the FREE-COOLING coil output already at the temperature requested by the user; the microprocessor management totally deactivates all the compressors supplying all the requested cooling capacity AT NO COST, in contrast to traditional chillers. The difference between the outdoor air temperature and that requested by the user can also be such as to lower the solution temperature at the FREE-COOLING coil output to below the set-point requested for this use. This is a condition which does not compromise unit safety thanks to the presence of anti-freeze in the solution. The microprocessor modulates the fan speed until their withdrawal. If, with all the fans switched off, the temperature continues to go down, the three-way valve automatically positions itself in the summer setting, thus enabling the set-point to be maintained. 35 ELFOENERGY LARGE FANQE - ELECTRICAL PANEL VENTILATION This option is necessary for very hot climates, where the external temperature can be between +0 C and +0 C. It is made up of a forced ventilation system, activated by a thermostat, which provides for the correct usage temperature to be maintained by the components inside the electrical panel. The option includes a thermostat which activates forced ventilation when necessary. The device is installed and tested built-in. This accessory functions at all times even when the unit is switched off as long as the electricity supply is maintained and the unit is not isolated. In order to guarantee that the correct unit operation, the temperature inside the unit must not exceed 0 C. Therefore, during storage or when the unit is already installed but not powered, it is necessary to avoid exceeding the above-indicated temperature. When the unit has been installed, the protection and safety devices are only active with the power supply switched on and the unit not isolated. RE-0 / RE- / RE-0 / RE- / RE- - PROTEZIONE ANTIGELO QUADRO ELETTRICO This option is necessary for very cold climates, where the external temperature can be between - C and - C. It includes thermostat self-regulating heaters which are able to protect the electric panel from condensation and frost, guaranteeing its correct operation. PM - PHASE MONITOR The phase monitor makes it possible to check the correct connection of the phases and their imbalance in units powered with a tri-phase system. If the connection of the phases is not correct, or the threshold of phase imbalance is exceeded, or the voltage is too high or too low for a certain amount of time, the monitor acts on the control circuit and orders the unit to be shut down. As soon as nominal line conditions are restored, the unit is automatically reset. As soon as nominal line conditions are restored, the unit reset is manual.
