How to install and use your storage heater Storage Heaters NST.M and NST.A
This manual Introduction First of all, we would like to thank you for having bought an EV product; one that we hope will give you years of reliable heating. Before installing the heater, please read the following instructions carefully. EV is not responsible for any damage or problems resulting from incorrect installation. Once your heater is up and running, please store this booklet in a safe place for future reference. Recycling When you no longer need this heater, please follow the European Directive 2002/96/ CE as regards its disposal. This storage heater can not be put out as normal rubbish. It must either be taken to a special tip or to a distributor offering to do this for you. Recycling electrical appliances separately allows component parts to be re-used and limits the damage to the environment that would otherwise occur. Recycling saves power and resources. To encourage this, the heater bears a symbol showing it can not be put in a normal bin. For further information, get in touch with your local council or the shop where you purchased this product. 5 How to Use your Heater 1. Turning your heater on Getting started We recommend that when you use your heater, for the first couple of times, that you keep the area well ventilated. The heater is likely to give off a slight odour from its time in storage and carriage. This is perfectly normal and will disappear almost immediately. Never cover the heater s grille, nor use it as a storage shelf. In particular, keep inflammable materials such as newspapers, magazines, wood and material away from the heater. Similarly, do not obstruct the bottom of the heater in anyway as this will prevent air from circulating within it. As the heater finishes charging and starts to release its heat, it becomes hot to the touch, particularly the grille. These temperatures are within electrical heating norms and will not cause injury if touched momentarily. 2. Controlling your heater 2.1 Input The storage heater charges up automatically. The thermostat will turn it off when it reaches the temperature you choose. You will find the control dials on the right-hand panel. Simply turn the dial to one of the four positions below to change the charging process: Your heater is turned off and will not charge up. 1 The heater charges over night on this minimum setting. 2 Half-capacity. The heater charges at 50% of its full capacity. 3 Full-capacity. The heater is totally charged. This is the ideal setting for the coldest times of year. We would advise you to take into account where you live, as well as the time of year, when choosing the correct setting. 5
2.2 Output How to Use your Heater A dual-heat source This model of storage heater provides heat in two ways: a) through its panels, like a radiator and b) like a convector heater filling the room with its warm air flow via its grille. A standard safety feature, found in all such heaters, prevents the convector element from working when the heat released would be sufficient to cause injury. As a result, just after the heater is fully charged, usually in the early hours of the morning, the output controls will not allow the grille to be used. Were this feature not to exist, the airflow would, at this [1] point, be hot enough to either scald or burn. The output and input dials are to be found on the right-hand side panel of the storage heater. Both have clear markings and large numbers that indicate the settings chosen. As with charging, there are four positions to choose from when deciding what output you want. The storage heater is working by radiating heat and the grille is not in use at all. As a result the storage heater maintains its heat for longer. This is the best option for those people wanting to turn on the convector and use up the heat left at the end of the day. 1 The storage heater gives out the minimum output through the grille. 2 The storage heater gives out average heat via the grille. 3 Maximum convection output. This setting only kicks in when the heat of the airflow does not present any risk. Even so, the output takes places quickly and there will only be heat for the first part of the day. As with charging, you will need to find the level of output that meets your needs and takes into account where you live. 6
How to Use your Heater 2.3 Automatic Controls (Only available in the NST.A model) The automatic version of the NST.M is called the NST.A. It is identical to the NST.M in terms of design and performance but has the additional benefit of a thermostat. The dial that controls this, is also on the right hand side of the heater, below the output and input dials [2]. The thermostat itself is in the base of the storage heater, where it registers the air temperature as it enters the heater. When this matches, or is higher than, the preset one, the recharging cycle is turned off. The automatic dial gives you three settings: Manual the storage heater charges as normal. Automatic charging depends on the room temperature. When this is more [2] than 20 C, the storage heater will not recharge. Frost-protection the storage heater switches itself on when the temperature drops below 6 C. 3. Practical Tips The following table lists typical faults, with their possible causes and suggested solutions. This check list is designed to help you rectify any problem that is not caused by a technical failure and save you time and worry. 7
How to Use your Heater PROBLEM ACTION SOLUTION Check there has not been a power cut. Check the input dial has not been turned to off Turn the dial to on and adjust as necessary. The storage heater has not charged up. There is not enough heat. There is too much heat. Marks are appearing on the wall. Check your fuse board. Re-set the relevant fuse. Where you have a timer on your plug, check it has been correctly set. Adjust the timer, so it is working correctly. With the NST.A model, check the dial is on the right setting. Turn the charge dial to a higher setting. Get in touch with the person who installed your heater or Having eliminated all the above, the safety switch may need resetting. call our technical support team. Check what setting you have the input dial on. Turn the dial to a higher setting. Check what setting you have the output dial on. Turn up the convector. Check that the windows have not been open for a considerable length of time. If having done all the above, there is still a problem Close all windows during the next cycle and see how the storage heater works then. Your heater may not be powerful enough for the room it is heating. Check what setting the input dial is on. Turn the dial down a setting. Check what setting the output dial is on. Turn the dial to a higher setting. On having checked both dials, there is still a problem Speak to your supplier or call technical support team. These may stem from dirt from building work and dust around the storage Clean around the storage heater thoroughly every day. heater. These may be due to your pets. Similarly, the may be caused by rugs and carpeting that are too close to the heater. It also possible that if the paint used in your home contains high levels of epoxy or pigments, these may discolour with the heat from the storage heater. Keep pets away from the heater, especially when they are moulting. Move them away from the heater. Run a clean, damp cloth over the area. If the marks do not disappear, it is likely to be the type of paint used. Living close to heavy traffic may also be responsible. Keep your windows closed as much as possible. Storage heaters do not contain any combustible elements. Marks on the walls are unusual and are normally due to other outside factors. Dust and animal hair, when heated, produce a residue found on walls. 8

How to Install 2. Prior to Setting Up To make handling easier, the heater and the bricks come separately. You will find the stand next to the elements, inside the heater. A qualified electrician should install the heater. It is illegal to install this storage heater in workshops where there are gas fumes or any inflammable products. It is advisable to position the heater a certain distance from other objects, in particular doors and wooden furniture. Minimum distances to other objects are: The electrical connection in the fuse board must be through a single phase circuit breaker. This will ensure the necessary minimum distance of 3 mm between contacts. The working voltage is 220/240V and must be earthed. The electrical installation should meet all electrical regulations. The wall you put the heater on must be sufficiently strong to take its weight, as should the floor. If you have any doubts, talk to a surveyor. Make sure the room and where you are siting your storage heater is clear of all dirt and dust. [3] RIGHT VIEW FROTN VIEW 10
How to Install 3. Step-by-step guide to assembly 3.1 Fixing the Heater to the Wall Take the storage heater out of its packaging with care. Instructions for doing these can be found the packaging itself. You will find the feet inside the heater. Undo the bottom screws [4]. Remove the front panel [5]. You will now be able to see the storage heater s core and the fixings for the grille. Now remove the front panel of the storage core by undoing the screws to find your storage heater s feet. The feet simply click into place. They do not require screws. Place the heater upside down, and clip the feet into place. Check they are secure and turn the heater upright and place into position. To fix the storage heater to the wall, remove the front grille. This comes as a single piece, designed to make installation easy. It also means that in the future, replacing the grille, should it be necessary, is straightforward. You unscrew the grille [7], sliding it out as shown [8]. [4] [5] [6] [7] 11
How to Install Place the storage heater against the wall where you want to put it and using a pencil mark where the brackets will go [9]. Move the storage heater to one side. Drill the necessary holes and fix the heater in place. [8] [9] 3.2 Charging the storage blocks At point 7 Element distribution, you can consult the number and brick distribution per model. Be careful when placing the storage heater to leave sufficient space on the right hand side for easy access to the dials [10]. Pull the elements towards you and place the blocks behind them. Return the elements to the upright position, and place the remaining blocks in front of the elements. These blocks match those behind [11]. Check you have the blocks in the correct position. Each block has an arrow showing how it should be placed. 3.3 Connecting the heater to the electricity supply Look at the bottom right-hand side [12]. Unscrew the bottom screw of the electrical connection strip [13]. This can now swing forward, making connecting the cables very straightforward. Pass the electricity cable from back to front, as shown, [15] and connect up in accordance with the wiring diagram provided (see point 4). Screw the connection strip back in place. 12 [10] [11]
How to Install [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] 3.4. Final Checks Before putting the front panel of the otorage heater back on: Carry out an insulation test with a voltage of at least 500 V. The insulation resistance must be 0.2 MOhm Test that the elements work and that they also stop when the input thermostat is turned. Connect the heater and check consumption, tension and intensity, using the following diagram as a guide. Finally, check that all the panels fit properly and that the clips [16] are securely in place. 13
