3 General The Hoval Cosmo Combination boiler couples the tried and tested technology of the Cosmo boiler with that of the Hoval CT-plus and Modul-plus (A type) calorifiers. Mounted above the boiler, the calorifier combines with the boiler to provide a fully integrated package. This includes DHW temperature control, pressure-jet burner suitable for firing on gas, oil or dual fuel and optional primary loading pump. Application Its compact design and flexibility are fundamental to the Cosmo Combination boiler, which is ideal for plantrooms with limited floor space or where there is a policy of decentralising boiler plant to point of use. But first and foremost the combination succeeds where there are peak demands for DHW e.g. hotels, leisure centres, canteens and military accommodation. It is here that the Cosmo Combination comes into its own, offering low cost installation in conjunction with optimum energy efficiency. Mix & Match Tailored, special combination packages, as for example, in the case of dedicated DHW generation, are available through Hoval Mix & Match packages. Secondary outlet Primary inlet Design Both the Modul-plus and CT-plus calorifiers used in the construction of the Cosmo-Combination have high grade stainless steel inner vessel(s) with a rippled wall, surrounded by a mild steel primary water jacket. The CT-plus has one single cylinder whereas the Modul-plus is made from a series of interconnected cylinders. The cylinders are wrapped in an insulation blanket within the Cosmo Combination casing. For DHW generation, the Hoval patented rippled heat transfer surface:- gives rapid regeneration of secondary water tempertures even after complete draw off. provides an extended heat transfer surface within the compact cylinder. creates turbulence on both the primary and secondary water sides to enhance heat transfer and prevents dead legs. provides a low intensity, large heat transfer surface, which reduces scale formation. The inside wall self descales due to the expansion and contraction movement of the rippled surface. strengthens the inner cylinder, thus allowing it to run on unvented systems at pressures up to bar g as standard & 0 bar g for high pressure models. From large houses to luxury hotels the Cosmo Combination can efficiently produce both domestic hot water and heating from one space saving unit. With over fifty years experience producing the calorifiers and combination boilers, during which time Hoval have refined the design to make it extremely reliable and easy to maintain. The design is significantly more resistant to scaling than conventional calorifiers due to the large heat transfer surface area and subsequently low intensity across it. Helps protect against legionella or bacteria. All Cosmo Combination calorifiers work on the primary water jacket principle. Whereby the stainless steel cylinder containing the domestic hot water is surrounded by hot primary water from the Cosmo boiler. Thus, the temperatures at the inner wall of the stainless steel cylinder are only marginally lower than the primary medium temperature. So as the kill-time for micro-organism above 0 o C is instantaneous, the cultivation of a bio-film in which legionella or bacteria growth can occur is significantly reduced. With full turbulant flow and low hydraulic resistance through the unit there are no dead legs, this makes the Cosmo Combination the ideal solution for hospitals, homes for the aged, schools and health resorts, where the very highest levels of domestic hot water hygiene are required. Design. Central to the calorifier design is the rippled stainless steel DHW cylinder. The rippled cylinder increases heat transfer across the primary and secondary mediums. It also adds strength, so with a maximum secondary working pressure of bar g (as standard) makes it ideal for unvented DHW systems. In addition as the domestic hot water passes through the stainless steel cylinder the rippled surface promotes turbulence and so naturally destratifies the hot water (no dead legs). The low hydraulic resistance through both the primary and secondary sides of the calorifier also allows the water to circulate through the unit more freely.

The installer must fit a secondary drain connection in the cold feed between the unit and the isolation For applications where some degree of standby is necessary, the installer should consider either fitting an immersion heater or where DHW outputs are crucial, two or more units should be installed as shown on the right. Heating circuits Summer Operation The use of boiler plant for all year round operation makes best use of capital investment. Using a combination boiler, illustrates this point with the close matching of the boiler output to the calorifier output. In the summer, for example, the DHW load (and possibly a small heating load) will be required. Where two or more combination boilers are installed it is therefore desirable for all calorifiers to be served by a matching boiler output, usually from just one boiler. The above can be achieved using one of the following typical schemes: Primary connections via low loss header. () -port valve on unvented calorifiers 9 only. Heating the calorifier primaries via a low loss header is one way of providing both heating and DHW standby. If no heating is required during the summer, isolate the header from the heating system(s). Twin primary pumps () available on request. Primary connections via main flow and return headers. Connecting the calorifier primary pumps and pipework to the main flow and return headers. If no heating is required during the summer, isolate the flow and return headers from the heating system. Primary connections via main flow and return headers. A -way valve can be used to control the flow of primary water to the calorifier. # Where the main heating pump has sufficient head this can be used to charge the calorifier, otherwise a separate pump () is required. 10 Installation Information Delivery and assembly All Cosmo combination boilers are delivered with calorifier, burner, insulation, casings, control panel and (where ordered) pump kits packed separately for fitting by the installer. Any ancilliary items such as safety valves, immersion heaters, altitude gauges, drain valves, gas boosters etc will also be supplied separately for fitting and wiring (where appropriate) by the installer. As standard, the boiler and calorifier will be supplied as two separate units for the installer the mount on site. It may be possible to do this in our factory prior to delivery, please consult Hoval Technical to discuss. Before mounting the burner, the front casing must be fitted. Likewise before connecting the flue, the rear casing must be fitted. 11 Installation Information K Minimum Access L W T Plantroom Layout. Wherever possible, space should be left around the boiler to enable all parts to be examined and the cubicle casings to be fi tted or removed easily. Front clearance: Space for the burner and the servicing of the equipment, must be accommodated. Ideally, front clearance should equate to the length of the boiler. This will permit the cleaning and removal of boiler tubes and also the extraction of DHW immersion heaters and where required sacifi cial anodes. The installer is advised to avoid creating obstructions which may hinder opening the boiler door, or the fi tting of an acoustic shroud. These obstructions include; other plant, extended boiler plinths, extensive gas pipework, and rigid oil lines / burner power supplies. Boiler plinth should not obstruct the shroud. K = (W T) x L T = (W K) x L T = Door opening K = Corridor width W = Boiler width L = Boiler length Hoval recommend the boiler plinth does not project beyond the front of the boiler as this will prevent a wheel-over type shroud from encapsulating the burner. Also, in some circumstances a plinth may be necessary to increase the firing height of the boiler to accomodate a particular burner. The installer must avoid, wherever practicable, the fi tting of pipework within the swing of the boiler door. If this is not possible, a removeable stool piece with a shut off valve upstream must be fi tted. Side Clearance: Generally a minimum clearance of 00mm is required at the side of the boiler to fi t and remove the side casings. Space to one side of the boiler is required to swing the boiler door with the burner fi tted, (standard to the right, optional to left), whereby when the door is open 90 o, the length of the burner+0mm will be at the side of the boiler. Where gas burners are fi tted consideration should be given to the gas train (and booster if specifi ed). Normally the gas pipe mains are run either from high or low level. In both cases an elbow has to be fi tted off the gas train to connect back to the header. Where gas trains fall within the width of the boiler this elbow has to be taken into account. Rear clearance: is required for the fl ue and system connections and access to the cleaning door. Consideration for the fl ue and calorifi er connections should be made to ensure these do not clash. Top clearance: is required above the unit to fit safety valves, automatic air vents and to access the calorifi er. Shorter clearances are possible subject to cleaning methods and plantroom layout. Please consult Hoval technical. Unvented systems: Where the DHW system is unvented, an unvented system kit must be installed. Unvented systems can be fed either directly from the mains or through a cold water booster set. Both require an unvented system kit. Hoval s standard kits are sized to suit the calorifi er. Where balanced hot and cold water services are required, valves sizes may have to be increased. In addition to the unvented system kit, a hand reset limit stat and primary -port valve must be fi tted. Mains fed unvented system kit: With a mains fed unvented system kit Hoval supply the following:- - Strainer. - Pressure reducing valve with gauge. - Double check valve. - Expansion vessel with combined lock shield / drain valve. - Expansion relief valve with tundish. - Temperature and pressure relief valve. Boosted unvented system kit: With a boosted unvented system kit Hoval supply the following:- - Double check valve. - Expansion vessel with combined lock shield / drain valve. - Expansion relief valve with tundish. - Temperature and pressure relief valve. - Pressure reducing valve with gauge (not necessary on systems with inverter controlled booster sets or where this is part of the booster package). Space should be allocated for siting the expansion vessel off the cold feed pipework. It is recommended that a lock shield / drain valve should be installed in the leg to the expansion vessel. Common unvented system kit: Where two or more Cosmo Combinations are installed it is possible to fi t a common unvented system kit in the main cold feed prior to teeing off to the calorifi ers. The following items are sized to suit the output of all the units and the total system volume including the cylinder volume: - Strainer, - Pressure reducing valve with gauge, - Double check valve, - Expansion vessel with combined lock shield / drain valve. The following safety valves must be fi tted to each calorifi er: - Expansion relief valve and tundish - Temperature and pressure relief valve(s). There should be no means of isolating the expansion relief valve and the temperature and pressure relief valve(s) from the calorifi er.
