10 How to Recalibrate Your All bimetal Insta-Read dial thermometers may lose accuracy after years of hard use. The hex nut on the underside of the thermometer is used to bring the thermometer back into calibration. First, you need a container of water at a known temperature the closer to the mid-range the better. A fever thermometer is ideal for measuring the temperature of the water. Lacking that, ice water which typically is at a temperature of about 34ºF or boiling water can be used. Please be cautious around boiling water. 1. Immerse the thermometer stem in the water to a depth of at least 2 inches. 2. Hold the dial firmly (pliers may have to be used) and slowly rotate the hex nut beneath the dial. Use the pliers to adjust the next nut. The pointer will start to move. 3. Rotate the nut clock wise to increase the reading. Rotate the nut counter clock wise to decrease the reading. 4. Stop adjusting when the pointer indicates the temperature of the water. GLOSSARY OF TERMS Accuracy: Closeness of a reading or indication of a measurement device to the actual value of the quantity being measured. Bimetal Thermometry: The principal on which bimetallic thermometers work is that a metal changes volume with temperature and that the amount of change is not the same for all metals. Thus, by banding two metal strips together to form a coil, the coil s movement will correspond to temperature change. Calibration: Comparing an instrument s measurement against a known standard. Celsius (Centigrade): A temperature scale defined by 0 C at the ice point and 100 C at the boiling point of water at sea level. Data Hold: The ability to freeze the display on any given measurement. Useful in applications where the instrument is not easily read while a measurement is being made. Fahrenheit: A temperature scale defined by 32 F at the ice point and 212 F at the boiling point of water at sea level. Freezing Point: The temperature at which the substance goes from the liquid phase to the solid phase. LCD, Liquid Crystal Display: A common type of display used on many handheld instruments and electronic products. LCD s are constructed of two thin transparent layers with grooves filled with a polarizing liquid. Resolution: The smallest unit that can be detected and displayed by a measurement device. Distance:Spot Ratio: The proportional relationship between the distance from the surface required for an accurate temperature reading of the surface area of a certain diameter (spot). Volt: The electrical potential difference between two points in a circuit. One volt is the potential difference needed to cause one amp of current to pass through one ohm of resistance.
