8 Situation: Correct: INTAKE HOSE INTAKE HOSE INTAKE HOSE INTAKE HOSE - drain pan fills with condensate - condensate flows into reservoir - intake hose between reservoir and pump empty - condensate level raises float, activates pump - pump self primes, sucks water up from reservoir (in this period pump operates dry and will click loudly) - intake hose purged of air - water enters pump and cools and lubricates - pump runs at low hum - water flows through pump and out discharge hose - water has been discharged from step - air gap equalizes atmospheric pressure - siphoning effect cannot occur - intake hose remains filled with water - drain pan fills up with condensate - intake hose already filled with water - pump immediately cooled and lubricated - pump runs quite immediately - no clicking noise occurs - The pump is operating within the proper parameters and there is no danger of overheating. (note: this is only for instances where the drain hose runs below the drain pan in the evaporator) Incorrect: INTAKE HOSE - water has been discharged from step - weight of the water in discharge hose plus atmospheric pressure at drain pan outlet forces water remaining in the intake hose to flow out through pump - intake is once again full of air INTAKE HOSE - we begin back at step - drain pan fills with condensate - condensate flows into reservoir - intake hose between reservoir and pump empty the cycle will keep repeating itself and eventually destroy the pump - The problem with this situation is every time the pump has to prime itself and purge the air from the intake hose (runs dry- see step ) it sustains a small amount of damage which wears out the pump. - Each time the pump runs dry it takes longer for it to suction the water to cool itself and eliminate the loud clicking noise. - This will destroy the pump! See steps & for proper installation. Guidelines for proper discharge: In order to fully understand the operation of these pumps it is necessary to understand some of their basic principles of operation: All Aspen mini pumps share common characteristics: - They are self priming - They are water cooled - They are water lubricated This means that when they are activated, they will self prime, however during this initial period they will suck in air and while this is happening they will be running both hot and dry. Because of this, they will emit a clicking noise which is entirely normal during the initial start up phase only, (usually around seconds or less) and this will stop when all of the air in the pump intake has been purged and the pump becomes cooled and lubricated by the water flowing through it. If the clicking noise is heard while the pump is operating after the initial start up has been completed, this is an abnormal situation and indicates that there is a problem in that the pump is running without cooling or lubrication and is overheating. This usually occurs in a split pump because the intake hose (the / clear hose between the reservoir and the pump) has emptied itself due to a siphoning effect created by atmospheric pressure. Therefore, it is vital that the intake hose is kept full of water at all times so that no air is present for the pump to suck in when it starts operation. As long as the intake hose remains full of water, every time the pump starts up it is immediately cooled and lubricated by the water flowing through it and will operate as designed, with minimal noise. Each pump is fitted with a thermal overload protector which will deactivate it in case of overheating. However, once it cools down it will begin to operate again, and if the pump is allowed to continue to operate for a sustained period of time in this condition, it will overheat, seize up and destroy itself. In some applications, the vertical distance between the reservoir and the pump can be up to m ( feet) and obviously, the longer this distance, the longer the pump will have to operate hot and dry before it evacuates the air from the intake tube. Therefore, the longer time it will have in which to damage itself. If the discharge hose is run below the level of the drain pain in the evaporator, the weight of the water in the discharge hose, plus atmospheric pressure on the water in the drain pan will cause the water to continue flowing - even after the pump has switched itself off; until all the water in the system has evacuated itself. This is similar to the siphon effect one creates when sucking gas out of a tank in a car, i.e. once you start the initial siphoning effect by sucking on the hose the contents of the tank will continue to flow out as long as the discharge end is lower than the fluid level in the tank. The flow will continue until the tank is empty or until the end of the discharge hose is lifted up higher than the fluid in the tank. At which point the atmospheric pressure equalizes and the siphoning effect stops.
9 Mini Pumps - Technical Summary Mini pumps are not designed to run dry. They are water cooled and lubricated by the condensate flowing through them. They require a float switch to detect the presence of water in the drain pan and activate the pump only when the water is present. Mini pumps always consist of two elements:. Pump body - includes an electronic PCB and the pump motor.. Reservoir - contains the filter and the switching mechanism to activate the pump. This must always be kept level and clean for proper operation of the float switch. The filter must be cleaned regularly. Mini Pump Styles:. Split type - (Orange and Aqua series) are designed with separate pump and reservoir.. Mono bloc type - (Lime or Blanc series) are designed with both the pump and reservoir as one integral unit sharing a common body. Mini pumps have two cable connections:. Power supply cable - colour coded for different voltages. Conductors for volt pumps are white, black and green. Conductors for volt pumps are red, black and green. (V models have grey wires). Overflow switch cable - designed to break the communication wire between the condenser and the evaporator in case the water level in the reservoir rises to an unacceptable level. This cable has conductors: grey (common), purple (normally closed) and orange (normally open). This colour coding is identical for all pump models except the mini Blanc which has grey and purple only. During overflow condition, the pump will continue to operate. Connection of the overflow switch is imperative for safe operation. Correct pump wiring: Mini and Maxi models are available in several voltages. Power supply to the pump should always be connected to the incoming power terminal block on the evaporator (not a separate circuit) to ensure that the pump is powered whenever the evaporator is powered. Some building codes may require a separate circuit for a pump which will override our power wiring instructions Building codes may also require a disconnect switch for the evaporator. The pump must be connected to the load terminals to isolate both the pump and evaporator. PUMP V N L G CORRECT POWER WIRING FOR PUMP IF DISCONNECT IS REQUIRED BY LOCAL CODE EVAPORATOR V WHITE BLACK GREEN DISCONNECT DO NOT WIRE PUMP FROM INCOMING SIDE OF DISCONNECT NEUTRAL Why a breather tube is required: When the pump begins sucking water out of the reservoir, an air lock will be created - unless an air intake opening is provided on top of the reservoir. The reservoir relies on gravity, so it must always be below the drain pan. DRAIN PAN CONDENSATE INLET FILTER WIRE TO PUMP AIR INTAKE PREVENTS VACUUM BREATHER TUBE PUMP INTAKE TUBE Effect of a dirty filter: If the filter is clogged, the condensate cannot pass through to raise the float. If the float does not rise, the magnet will not activate the pump and the condensate will back up until it overflows the drain pan. DRAIN PAN LIVE GROUND CONDENSATE INLET PUMP V WIRE TO PUMP FILTER L L G EVAPORATOR V RED BLACK GREEN DISCONNECT LINE LINE DO NOT WIRE PUMP FROM INCOMING SIDE VOLTS OF DISCONNECT VOLTS GROUND BREATHER TUBE PUMP INTAKE TUBE Operating Sequence of a Mini Pump. Pump is in Standby Mode: Pump is off, float rests on bottom of reservoir, overflow switch status is normal so contacts across grey and purple wires are closed and communication wire from condenser to evaporator remains energized.. Pump Enters Operation Mode: The evaporator condenses water which flows into the drain pan and through the drain hose into the reservoir lifting the float / activating the pump. The pump empties the reservoir, lowering the float, causing the pump to switch off. (A small amount of water will remain in the reservoir) The pump returns to standby mode. Overflow switch status is normal, wires are closed and communication wire from condenser to evaporator remains energized. Cycle repeats indefinitely as long as water level remains within normal limits.. Pump Enters Alarm Mode: The pump enters operation mode. Water level continues to rise due to pump failure, blockage or an undersized pump. The water level reaches /. The overflow switch activates changing the status to abnormal. The pump continues to run but contacts across the grey and purple wire open, breaking the communication circuit to the evaporator, preventing it from producing any more condensate, and shutting down the system. When occupant notices AC is not running they will contact a service technician to investigate and service.. Pump reverts to standby mode: Once the reason for the high water level has been diagnosed and corrected, the pump reverts to standby mode. FLOAT WIRE TO PUMP FLOAT MAGNET MAGNET WATER LEVEL / WATER LEVEL / BREATHER TUBE PUMP INTAKE FROM DRAIN PAN Peristaltic Pumps - Technical Summary Three Major benefits of a peristaltic pumps:. The ability to run wet or dry enables intermittent operation with a reservoir and float switch, or continuous with the evaporator.. The capability to pump contaminated water from an evaporator coil during condensate production.. High level of suction enables remote mounting up to feet away from the evaporator. Peristaltic pump design: Peristaltic pumps operate using a rotor wheel which is electrically turned at a slow speed and has two or more roller wheels spaced at points along its perimeter. These rollers compress a rubber tube, INLET pinching it closed at each roller location. As the rotor turns, fluid inside the tubing is forced to flow in the same direction as the rotor. Before the pinch point is released, another roller pinches the starting point, preventing any back flow of liquid. This peristaltic action produces a high level of suction, but has a limited volume. Peristaltic Styles: Mechanical - uses a float inside a reservoir which is mounted below the drain pan within the evaporator enclosure. Like a mini pumps, the reservoir requires a breather tube to prevent air lock. The pump assembly can be remotely mounted up to feet away and is connected to the reservoir with / id tubing as well as a communication cable. Condensate water entering the reservoir raises the float, sending a signal which starts the pump. The mechanical type peristaltic pump includes the added benefit of an overflow switch similar to the mini pumps, however, the pump comes with a pin plug and the cable to connect the overflow switch to the evaporator must be field supplied. Universal - For installations where a reservoir is not practical or distant remote mounting is required. This pump incorporates a twin lead sensor cable with tips, red and blue, each of which are clipped onto a refrigeration component such as the hot liquid line and the cold gas line of the refrigeration circuit. When a preset temperature differential is detected between the tips, the pump begins to operate and removes any condensate as it is produced. When the temperature differential subsides the pump switches off. This pump does not incorporate an overflow switch for the evaporator.
