As more and more studies demonstrate the hazards of air-borne wood dust, woodworkers have shifted their purchasing priorities of dust collection equipment from a secondary expense consideration to one of primary importance. When a dust extraction system is designed the ducting pipe diameter is sized to maintain the correct air speed in the pipes and the dust plant is designed to fulfill the correct air volume necessary to operate the number of machines specified while incorporating shutoff gates. When the complete plant is installed and commissioned the operation of the system is transferred into the hands of the staff who, at the same time are concentrating on their work. With many dust outlet points in one or more rooms it would be very difficult for the machine operator too know how many gates are open altogether. Our company has experienced, due to incorrect control of the dust extraction systems, that ducting pipes have collapsed flat, dust extraction plants not filtering correctly and pipe ducting systems filling up with waste wood dust. All these factors add to an unsafe working environment and this is also addressed in the Australian Standards regarding house keeping of workshops and dust extraction systems. The responsibility for correct operation, safety and maintenance of these units, is in the hands of the owner to maintain. The automatic shut-off gate system called Ecogate is a valuable tool in the efficient control and balancing of the dust extraction system and ducting deleting human error in not operating the total dust extraction system correctly. All the operator has to do is turn on a wood working machine and the Ecogate system takes full control of the dust extraction plant. Also with the promotion of carbon credit and power usage becoming more and more important in the future this system can also be upgraded to control the electric motor power supply to the fan and will reduce the motor s power consumption relative to the number of gates operating.
