2 How We Got to Now I recently read a fascinating book with this title by Steven Johnson. It is about six innovations that made the modern world: Glass, Cold, Sound, Clean, Time and Light. 6 When Is Enough, Enough? At Anthony PHC, we believe in preventative maintenance for your furnace. We want to prevent a crisis before it occurs. A cold night in December is not the time to find out that your heat isn t working. Here are 4 questions to consider when deciding if it s time to replace your furnace before you wind up in the cold. 1. How old is your furnace? We say a furnace is old if it is older than 15 years. If your furnace is close to being able to vote, you should consider replacing your furnace, rather than when it stops and you re chilled to the bone. Anthony PHC offers FREE energy analysis and estimates. 2. Are your energy bills increasing? Furnaces lose their efficiency as they age. Like an older automobile, they may still work, but not as efficiently. The furnace may run longer and harder to provide the same amount of heat. New furnaces use approximately 1/6th the electricity of an older model. Saving money on your energy bill is a strong consideration when evaluating a replacement. 3. Are you putting money into your heating system? Have you had to replace one or two parts over the last few years? Furnaces incur more breakdowns as they get older and usually right before the end of their lives. As time passes, it gets harder to obtain the correct parts. When is enough enough? How much more will you invest in an old system versus putting your money towards a new system? 4. Are you comfortable? The question to ask is: Are you comfortable in your home? Are you having to adjust your thermostat frequently? Do you have to wear more clothes than you should to stay warm? These are all signs that your furnace lacks the ability to distribute heat evenly and keep you comfortable. How important is your comfort to you? To Tank Or Not To Tank, That Is The Question... So many questions have arisen about the economics of traditional tank water heaters. The traditional, tank-style water heater uses gas or electricity continuously to keep the entire tank of water hot, even when you don t need water. A tankless water heater is far more efficient because it only uses energy to heat water when there is a demand for it; there is no standing pilot light. Water enters the heater only when hot water is called for somewhere in the home. As long as you have water, you will never run out of hot water! Because water is not collected in the system, corrosion is not an issue. This extends the life of an on-demand, tankless water heater to about 20 years; almost twice that of an average storage tank water heater. The benefits are endless; they only begin at unlimited hot water!
