2 Heger 1 HEGER compactor systems Compactor systems for expanded polystyrene (EPS), polystyrene foam and dewatering. The German manufacturer and supplier, Heger, has a worldwide reputation for its solutions in the field of compactor systems for EPS, polystyrene foam and dewatering. Now the company is launching their new series of products: The Tiger for EPS The Lion for polystyrene foam The Crocodile for dewatering it separates out solid floating materials and ordinary liquid from other waste materials. The recycled items offer both economic and environmental advantage for both the user and society in general. The Tiger and The Lion: Both polystyrene foam and expanded polystyrene are categorised as problem waste due to their very high volume and low weight. EPS consists of 98 % air and % polystyrene. Polystyrene foam can be compacted at a ratio of 50:1. Many useful products are made from recycled EPS and polystyrene foam. Recycling allows the material to be re-used, offering significant environmental advantage. The recycled material is compressed to form blocks that can be stacked on pallets before being collected by a recycler. In Norway, well over 10,000 tonnes of expanded polystyrene is used every year, 50 % of this being for the fish industry. The rest generally goes for use as transport packaging protection for furniture and electronic goods, or insulation in buildings and the construction industry. Large volumes and low weight mean that there are considerable gains in terms of transport and the environment to be had from compacting EPS and polystyrene foam on site. The Crocodile: compresses waste quantities by separating solid and liquid materials. In addition, residual liquid can be separated from the waste. It is used in plastics production, dewatering of packaging such as plastic cups, Tetra Pak packaging, cans or PET bottles. The Tiger model series from Heger compact larger units economically and efficiently into smaller blocks. It is perfect for where relatively large quantities of expanded polystyrene occur, which is used mainly for packaging, such as in larger electronics and furniture warehouses. It is also effective for food stores which have damp expanded polystyrene or fish boxes, or for storage facilities and industrial premises carrying large quantities of expanded polystyrene. The massive reduction in volume offers a significant cost reduction in storage, waste disposal and transport. Expanded polystyrene can be recycled as high-quality PS granulate and re-used in the manufacture of plastic items such as CD covers, clothes hangers, plastic mouldings and insulation. Its general modular design means that the machine can be customised to match customer requirements. The machines can either be fed manually, using a conveyor or via a hopper. How it works The operator inserts the EPS pieces in the machine hopper. An efficient coarse shredder with twin-tooth rotating shafts reduces the pieces to 0-50 mm size, which are fed into the press channel and compressed together. The blocks exit separately to be loaded individually onto pallets. The principle behind it is a horizontally positioned screw with dewatering channel which compact the dry materials in the press channel. The counter-pressure required for dewatering is generated using an adjustable constriction in the channel, and the residual liquid drains off via a channel section fitted with a sieve. The Crocodile is used by a wide range of industrial manufacturers for dewatering the floating contents of plastic cups, Tetra-Pak packaging, cans or PET bottle, sludge and industrial waste. It is currently also used for dewatering purposes in plastics production. The system is a practical solution for companies in terms of overall economy and the environment.
