3 With EcoCond EcoCond+, we have created a system that features optimal heat and cold recovery characteristics for advanced energy-efficient air conditioning. EcoCond+ AIR CONDITIONING WITH SYSTEM. EcoCond I EcoCond+ is an energy-efficient heat recovery system for heating and cooling. The economic operating mode of this system helps to sustainably reduce the life cycle costs of air handling systems. The principle: A combination from highly efficient counterflow heat exchangers and a customized hydraulic system configuration. Aiming at a professional climate, the EcoCond / EcoCond+ system implements responsibly criteria from applicable regulations and laws (DIN EN 308, VDI 3803, VDI 6022, Energy Saving Ordinance, Renewable Energy Heat Act, Ecodesign Directive). Their installation depth is smaller than 300 mm, with a fin spacing of 2.0 mm. 7 EcoCond basic version SYSTEM CONCEPT The EcoCond basic version is a full-value highly efficient heat recovery system that has been specifically designed for standard heat recovery applications with high energy efficiency (outside air conditioning, for example). This system mainly consists of counterflow air-water heat exchangers in the supply and exhaust air units, an HP centrifugal pump, hydraulic connections and an integrated control system. Thanks to the use of a customized regulation strategy in connection with an variable-speed supply pump and electrical actuators temperature transfer degrees up to 75% are possible. 9 Energy efficiency verification TEMPERATURE EFFICIENCY TRANSMISSION For highly efficient heat recovery systems, degrees of temperature change are calculated according to DIN EN 308, category IIa in dry conditions (t ODA =5 C, t ETA =25 C at a wet-bulb temperature <14 C). ENERGY EFFICIENCY VERIFICATION The energy efficiency η e is the most important performance characteristic for the assessment of heat recovery systems. It is used to classify systems according to DIN EN Likewise, it is also a criterion for the classification of air handling units into energy efficiency classes (AHU Guideline 01) and describes the minimum requirements in laws and ordinances (such as German Energy Saving Ordinance (EnEV), German Renewable Energy / Energies Heat Act (EE-WärmeG), Ecodesign Directive). Considering the temperature transfer degree, the energy efficiency ηe also includes the auxiliary power P el (fan, pumps, etc.) that are required for heat recovery. 11 EcoCond full version NEW OPTIONS AND OPPORTUNITIES EcoCond full version is the extension of the basic version to a multifunctional highly efficient heat recovery system. Based on a freely programmable DDC control, highly efficient counterflow heat exchangers and a hydraulic concept that is specifically adjusted to the application, a system solution meeting the highest requirements for heat and cold recovery can be created. EcoCond full version can be extended by plate heat exchangers for the supply of heat or cold energies to the heat recovery circuit. This option eliminates the need for classic reheaters or recoolers in the air handling unit. This minimises air-side resistances (=electrical power) and reduces the footprint of the air handling unit. INTERFACE REDUCTION Each multifunctional application of our EcoCond full version is implemented by system extensions in connection with a freely programmable DDC control. This improves the energy efficiency of the whole air handling system and reduces customer interfaces. The options for system extensions are as manifold as the possibilities of air conditioning themselves. All variants are possible from a simple control of an adiabatic extract air humidifier or hydraulic extensions for dehumidification heat recovery (reheating using EcoCond) up to the overall take-over of control and regulating functions for single or multiple air handling units (multi-systems) in a group. Plate heat exchangers for the supply of pumped warm water (PWW) or pumped cold water (PCW) will be dimensioned by BerlinerLuft. specifically for the relevant project. It is also possible to use renewable energy sources (e.g. solar) or waste heat from refrigeration processes, combined heat and power units as well as industrial processes in a flexible and medium-independent manner. 13 EcoCond full version Heating mode with additional plate heat exchanger EcoCond full version is extended by an additional plate heat exchanger in the supply circuit of the supply air heat exchanger in the AHU. The function of the plate heat exchanger is to supply heat energy by means of pumped warm water (PWW) into the system. This increases the supply temperature in the heat recovery circuit and the required supply air temperatures can be reached also without reheater in the AHU (see the application example). At the same time, the mass flow in the heat recovery circuit is optimised to ensure an efficient heat recovery. In heating mode, the DDC control automatically controls the antifrost functions in the heat recovery circuit and air-side anti-icer of the extract air heat exchanger depending on air flow rates and pressure losses. 14 EcoCond full version Cooling mode with additional plate heat exchanger EcoCond full version is extended by an additional plate heat exchanger in the supply circuit of the supply air heat exchanger in the AHU. The plate heat exchanger removes heat from the system by means of pumped cold water (PCW). This reduces the supply temperature in the heat recovery circuit and the required supply air temperatures can be reached also without recooler in the AHU (see the application example). At the same time, the volume flow in the heat recovery circuit is optimised to ensure an efficient heat recovery. In the cooling mode, the extract air heat exchangers are bypassed through the bypass valve at low outdoor air temperatures (t ODA < t ETA ) and the required heat removal is only realised by the plate heat exchanger in the heat recovery circuit. As the temperature difference between outdoor air and extract air rises, the cooling mode with cold recovery will be activated. In this condition, a part of the absorbed heat energy is dissipated through the extract air heat exchanger. 15 EcoCond full version Dehumidification heat recovery and adiabatic extract air cooling This system extension as a combination from adiabatic extract air cooling and dehumidification heat recovery allows an extra efficiency improvement of the whole air handling system. DEHUMIDIFICATION HEAT RECOVERY For high requirements on air conditioning (temperature and humidity), a significant portion of operating cost can be saved by dehumidification heat recovery. This extension includes an adjustment of the hydraulic unit in connection with an additional heat exchanger in the air handling unit. If cooling with dehumidification is required, the bypass valve opens and the additional heat exchanger takes over the reheating of dry air. In the dehumidification case, the full energy for reheating and the associated supply of pumped warm water (PWW) can be saved in this way. ADIABATIC EXTRACT AIR COOLING Adiabatic extract air humidification allows a reliable base load covering in cooling mode while it reduces the need for external cold energies by up to 40% (see the application example). Humidification decreases the supply air temperature in the extract air heat exchanger (approx. 2.5 K per 1 g/kg air humidification) which makes that more heat from the heat recovery circuit can be delivered to the exhaust air in the cooling mode. The DDC control calculates the supply temperature in the extract air heat exchanger from the extract air condition and the humidifier s efficiency. But the humidifier is not released before a certain difference between inlet of the extract air heat exchanger and outdoor air temperature is reached. This saves valuable resources and prevents the humidifier from being operated inefficiently. Also the use on cold energy can be more efficient. Reheating reduces the supply temperature of the outdoor air heat exchanger in the air handling unit so that the PCW cooler in the air handling unit nearly only needs to ensure a latent heat output (saves PCW). Energy efficiency is the result of the holistic consideration of all components in a system. A multi-functional highly efficient heat recovery system can only be realised if air handling unit, heat exchangers and the hydraulic unit are combined with a control strategy that is adjusted to the overall system. 19 EcoCond+ THE 3RD GENERATION OF HEAT AND COLD RECOVERY EcoCond+, is the extension of our EcoCond system to a multifunctional highly efficient heat recovery system featuring temperature transfer degrees η t 92%. This 3rd generation of heat and cold recovery improves the hydraulic concept by the integration of reversible heat pump technology. This heat pump causes a purposeful and demand-dependent heat displacement with high performance numbers within the heat recovery circuit. The result is a higher heat recovery on the extract air heat exchanger. Compared to a conventional heat recovery system without heat pump, EcoCond+ needs significantly less additional supply of PWW and PCW in the heating or cooling mode. Despite the additional electrical power needed for the heat pump, this makes it possible to increase the energy efficiency of a highly efficient heat recovery system by up to 18%. This reduces the operating costs significantly and shortens the payback period for EcoCond+. NEW PERFORMANCE RANGE, ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY EcoCond+ is based on the proven hydraulic configuration of the EcoCond full version including the freely programmable DDC control. This allows an implementation of customer-specific system extensions, with the effect that each multifunctional use of the system further increases the energy efficiency of the whole air handling system. There is multitude of possible system extensions which can contribute to the reduction of interfaces across all different systems. Any configuration is possible from a simple control of adiabatic extract air humidifiers or hydraulic extensions for dehumidification heat recovery (reheating using EcoCond+) up to the overall take-over of control and regulating functions for single or multiple air handling units (multi-unit systems) in an interconnected group. As an option, EcoCond+ can also work without any supply of additional pumped cold water (PCW). In this case, the hydraulic unit is extended by a refrigeration system where the required cooling energies are generated internally. Air conditioning EcoCond EcoCond+ 19

21 EcoCond+ function description Data according to DIN EN 308 Step 1 At an outdoor air temperature of 5 C, the brine mass flow exits the air-water heat exchanger of the supply air section with a temperature of 8.2 C. Step 2 It enters the hydraulic unit where it is cooled down to 4.6 C by the heat pump s evaporator. Step 3 Given a supply air temperature of 23.4 C under reference conditions without the impact of additional primary energies, EcoCond+ achieves a temperature transfer degree η t = 92% as per DIN EN 308. Considering all auxiliary energies (including driving power for the refrigerant compressor) an energy efficiency of η e 1:1 =83% as per DIN EN results for the application example with EcoCond+. With further system extensions, it is possible to increase the energy efficiency of the overall system once more. In the extract air section, the brine cooled down to 4.6 C absorbs heat from the 25 C warm extract air. This heat withdrawal from the extract air causes that the brine mass flow is heated to 21.9 C. Step 4 In the heat pump s condenser, the brine is further heated from 21.9 C to 26.3 C. Step 5 The brine mass flow having a temperature of 26.3 C enters the supply air section of the air handling unit again and causes a heating of the outdoor air from 5 C to 23.4 C. The brine is cooled down to 8.2 C by this and the cycle starts again. 22 Comparison to the highly efficient HRV Principle of efficiency enhancement ISSUES OF HIGHLY EFFICIENT HEAT RECOVERY SYSTEMS The development of heat recovery systems with efficiency factors between 45% and approx. 75% is mainly based on an enlargement of the heat transfer surface area in combination with an improved internal hydraulic connection (counterflow principle). Heat exchangers with higher output are the basis for a multifunctional use of highly efficient heat recovery systems. But an enlargement of heat transfer surface areas is limited by design and hygienic aspects (VDI 6022). Moreover, the supply of pumped warm / cold water causes a reduction of the system efficiency. In heating mode, for example, the supply of pumped warm water results in higher supply temperatures in the extract air heat exchanger. This causes lower temperature differences on the extract air heat exchanger and thus a reduction of the heat recovery from the extract air. SOLUTION BY REVERSIBLE HEAT PUMP TECHNOLOGY This is exactly the point where EcoCond+ comes into play. An integration of reversible heat pump technology increases the temperature differences on the extract air heat exchanger in any operating condition of the system. This increases the recovered output from the extract air while reducing the required supply (= operating costs). This efficiency increase from EcoCond to EcoCond+ can be seen from the application under reference conditions. 23 EcoCond+ Heating mode with additional plate heat exchanger EcoCond+ is extended by an additional plate heat exchanger in the supply circuit of the supply air heat exchanger in the air handling unit. The function of the plate heat exchanger is to supply heat energy by means of pumped warm water (PWW) into the system. This increases the supply temperature in the heat recovery circuit and the required supply air temperatures can be reached also without reheater in the air handling unit (see the application example). At the same time, the brine mass flow in the heat recovery circuit is optimised to ensure an efficient heat recovery. In heating mode, the DDC control automatically controls the antifrost functions in the heat recovery circuit and air-side anti-icer of the extract air heat exchanger depending on air flow rates and pressure losses. The reversible heat pump supplies additional heat energies in the heat recovery circuit. This causes that the brine mass flow is already heated from 16.9 C to 19.8 C in the application example and EcoCond+ needs 23% less external heat energies from pumped warm water (PWW) than a conventional highly efficient heat recovery system having a temperature transfer degree of η t = 75%. 24 EcoCond+ Cooling mode with additional plate heat exchanger EcoCond+ is extended by an additional plate heat exchanger in the supply circuit of the supply air heat exchanger in the air handling unit. The plate heat exchanger removes heat from the system by means of pumped cold water (PCW). This reduces the supply temperature in the heat recovery circuit and the required supply air temperatures can be reached also without recooler in the AHU (see the application example). At the same time, the brine mass flow in the heat recovery circuit is optimised to ensure an efficient heat recovery. In the cooling mode, the extract air heat exchangers are bypassed through the bypass valve at low outdoor air temperatures (t ODA <t ETA ) and the required heat removal is only realised by the plate heat exchanger in the heat recovery circuit. As the temperature difference between outdoor air and extract air rises, the cooling mode with cold recovery will be activated. In this condition, a part of the absorbed heat energy is dissipated through the extract air heat exchanger. The reversible heat pump additionally withdraws heat energies from the heat recovery circuit. This causes that the temperature of the brine mass flow is already reduced from 27.4 C to 22.2 C in the application example and EcoCond+ needs 55% less external heat energies from pumped cold water (PCW) than a conventional highly efficient heat recovery system having a temperature transfer degree of η t = 75%. 25 EcoCond+ Integrated cold generation and adiabatic extract air cooling This system extension as a combination from adiabatic extract air cooling and integrated cold generation allows an extra efficiency improvement of the whole air handling system. INTEGRATED COLD GENERATION For an integrated cold supply, the hydraulic unit of EcoCond+ is extended by a refrigeration system. A plate refrigerant-water heat exchanger is used for direct evaporation instead of the plate heat exchanger for the supply of pumped cold water. Further, a condenser is integrated in the extract air section of the air handling unit to deliver the withdrawn heat energy from the heat recovery circuit to the exhaust air. With the integrated cold generation, the supply with cold is distributed in each air handling system allowing a considerably higher failure safety in cooling mode. ADIABATIC EXTRACT AIR COOLING Adiabatic extract air humidification allows a reliable base load covering in cooling mode while it reduces the need for external cold energies by up to 40% in the application example. Humidification decreases the supply air temperature in the extract air heat exchanger (approx. 2.5 K per 1 g/kg humidification) which makes that more heat from the heat recovery circuit can be delivered to the exhaust air in the cooling mode. The DDC control calculates the supply temperature in the extract air heat exchanger from the extract air condition and the humidifier s efficiency. But the humidifier is not released before a certain difference between inlet of the extract air heat exchanger and outdoor air temperature is reached.
