5 Gas Ranges Overview 5 Gas is the preferred cooking fuel because it is hotter and retains less heat than electric (non-induction) cooking. Ranges are very different from the last time you bought a range. They are more powerful with many more possible features. 7 What s New 7 Front Control Ranges We will talk about freestanding and slide-in range options, but there is now a third possibility. The front control range combines the easy installation of a freestanding range with the slide-ins backguard free aesthetic. We will discuss all three options in this guide. 8 What s New 8 Wi-Fi Enabled Ranges Samsung has their first Wi-Fi cooktop. The temperature can be monitored remotely on your phone through an app. Look for improvements in GE and LG because they will be introducing new products as well. Photo credit: Samsung

9 W h a t s N e w Finish Options 9 Custom Colors La Cornue and BlueStar have a multitude of different color options. Ilve, ConuFe, and Veromna will have 9 different finishes as well. Black Stainless Steel Black Steel has become very popular. Its dark hue from stainless steel matches all cabinet styles. However, Black Steel is an oxide coating over stainless. 11 Range Terms 11 Sizes Standard ranges are available in 20, 24, 30 and inch is the most common size. Professional range sizes are 24, 30, 36, 48 and 60. Photo credit: Aidan Design via Houzz

13 Range Terms 13 Convection Fan-forced heat for more even temperature and cooking, especially for baking. Sometimes referred to as European convection, True Convection, refers to a third heating element behind the fan. It is more precise than regular convection. 14 Range Terms 14 Bake Element Below the lower rack, heat radiates from this element in bake mode. It is a broiler with greater width allowing for more heat to be transferred. 18 Range Terms 18 Second Oven Instead of a warming drawer, you have a second oven. There are two types of ranges with this feature. 19 Range Terms 19 Dual Fuel Features a gas top for output and electric convection oven for the most even cooking. Be careful before buying as you need a separate 220V line to accommodate the electric oven. 23 Types of Ranges 23 Slide-In Slide-in ranges, unlike freestanding ranges, have no backguard for a cleaner look. You ll see your whole backsplash without any obstruction. Slide-ins also overlap your countertop, so spills won t enter seams like a freestanding range allows. 25 Types of Ranges 25 Front Controls Front control ranges can fit easily in a 30 space like a freestanding range and have the controls on the front like a slide-in. They will still have a seam between the range and the counter.

26 Types of Ranges Comparison 26 Freestanding is the least expensive with Front Control and Slide-In being almost twice the average price. Slide-Ins are better than Front Control for new construction because they eliminate countertop seams. Freestanding ranges should be considered in replacement situations. 27 Types of Ranges 27 Professional Professional ranges are quite simply a commercial looking range with higher BTU s. Pro ranges are available in 24, 30, 36 and 48 with the larger sizes available with grill, griddle and French top configurations. 28 Types of Ranges Pro Range vs. Regular Range 28 VS Pro ranges have always had the higher BTU burners but that gap is narrowing considerably. 30 Cooktop Terms 30 Sizes Available in 12, 24, 30, 36 and 42 sizes. 12 and 42 are uncommon and mostly used in smaller applications or as secondary cooking appliances. 35 Gas Cooktops Cooktops + Rangetops 35 Cooktops are quite simply the burners of the range. What should be a very easy product to purchase is twice as hard to understand because unlike ranges, cooktops are dominated by niche companies like Thermador, Viking and Wolf. VS. The rangetop, like a pro range, has the higher BTU along with griddle and grill capability whereas the cooktop is much less expensive. 39 Gas Cooking How to Buy Range buying may seem confusing, but look at it this way: The basic range is freestanding with four burners The upgrades are a fifth burner, convection, warming drawer, griddle burner and second oven Think about a slide-in or front control range if you want something with a better look A professional range is more powerful, but almost every range has at least one power burner Lastly, buy around the holidays because prices can drop by 35%. Packages also geometrically increase rebates as well. 39

Check review sites like Google and the Better Business Bureau before you purchase. Remember, any store can sell an appliance; the biggest issues are shipping and service.
