3 EPA Section 608 Certification for HVAC Technicians Study on your own OR Take the formal EPA Certification Class If you would like a comprehensive class to review the material and then take the exam at the end of the class day, see page 10 for our class on November 6, If you would like to take the EPA Certification Self-Study program, here are the details: Review the Registration Information (page 16) and complete the Registration Form (page 17) and send it to Trane. Cost for the self-study program is $150. (You cannot register online for the Self-Study program.) You will be sent an ESCO Institute Study Manual to review. When you are prepared, make an appointment to take the EPA Certification test in either Indianapolis or Fort Wayne, with Denise. ( or dlslack@trane.com) Upon successful completion of Type I, II and/or III (Universal) test, the student will be mailed back certification. With our formal EPA Certification class or the Self-study program, the student should carefully review the study manual provided. Should the student not pass any portion of the exam and be required to take the exam again, there is no discount available, since Trane is charged for every test. 3

4 VRF-Variable Refrigerant Flow Installer Course This two-day class will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the installation of Trane s Variable Refrigeration Flow (VRF) systems. Additionally, an in-depth functional study of the system is conducted as well as a thorough discussion of the theories associated with properly applying installing and commissioning a Trane VRF system. After completion of this course, the attendee should leave with a high level of understanding about how to install a Trane VRF system correctly to ensure full capacity, long term reliability and with full warranty. A certificate will be awarded to those who pass. NOTICE: Accessing a refrigerant system requires an EPA Certification. Who Should Attend? VRF installation contractors and technicians. 5 VAV & Varitrac This one day class is designed to promote understanding of VAV systems and the different concepts in equipment and design in relation to conditioned air movement. The program introduces the systems, valves and the zone controls. Early pneumatic styles up to the electronic boards are covered. VARITRAC covers the newer style of boxes along with the electronic controls used with them. Varitrane and Varitrac boxes are used in both configurations and their application and maintenance will be covered. NOTICE: Accessing a refrigerant system requires an EPA Certification. 6 Voyager & Precedent Rooftops 2-25 Tons There are thousands of these units out there! Understand more about the complexities of these rooftop units! This one day seminar combines the light and medium sized (2-25 tons) commercial equipment Trane offers. Class discussion will cover the general layout of equipment and how this range of equipment is suited for VAV. We will also spend time on the important aspects of compressors, burners, micro electronic control and common FIOPs offered for each piece of equipment. Please note: Accessing a refrigeration system requires an EPA Certification. Who Should Attend? 7 Automation & Controls This one day training class helps to serve as a basic concept class on building automation and DDC controls. The components are identified as the class goes from a basic stand-alone system to gradually more involved systems and finally the capabilities of total building automation systems. The various controllers are discussed along with their capabilities and uses. Tracer Summit is touched on but not covered in individual depth. Summits are designed per individual job specs. Who Should Attend? This class is for owners and contractors who will come in contact with small free standing systems and those who operate them. 8 Intellipak Rooftops Trane Intellipak units are everywhere and you should know more about how this machine is designed and operates! This one day class includes construction of the entire unit along with the internals of the member components. Cooling cycle along with troubleshooting is discussed. Also a look at Intellipak controls including the STATITRAC, VFD, GBAS and VOM controls is included. A description and setup of the Human Interface panel is covered. Finally a look at the unit wiring diagram rounds out this class. NOTICE: Accessing a refrigerant system requires an EPA Certification. Who Should Attend? Facility operation personnel, technicians, contractors and management whose job responsibilities are involved with the operation or maintenance of a Trane Intellipak units. 9 VFDs Variable Frequency Drives This one-day class on variable frequency drives consists of concept, application, installation and maintenance. The course will cover general VFD theory of operation that is not vendor specific. Also discussed are startup, programming, troubleshooting, motor selection and harmonics. Whether it s called a freak, a drive, a VFD or an AFD, what was once limited to very large horsepower-expensive units has found its way into everyday applications. 10 EPA Certification Review & Exam This is the only opportunity this Fall to take this course! This class is designed to prepare the student for the EPA Section 608 certification with the exam given on the same day, at the end of the class. It covers procedures and governmental regulations associated with servicing refrigeration equipment and the recovery and recycling of refrigerants. It also familiarizes the attendee with ozone depletion and refrigerants. Objectives of the course include: Identify the proper safety precautions, including eye and hand protection, used while performing refrigeration operation and service. Identify examples of CFC, HCFC & HFC refrigerants, the expected replacement for commonly used refrigerants and the expected operating characteristics of the replacement. Demonstrate the use of the Temperature-Pressure Chart to identify refrigerant. Identify the common terms and the damaging process associated with ozone depletion. Distinguish three common refrigerant cylinders and proper use and maintenance for each. Review expected procedures to conserve and contain refrigerants and retrofit. Proper procedure for using manifold gauges to connect a vacuum pump, vacuum gauge and refrigerant supply to a refrigerant cylinder to evacuate and precharge the cylinder. Learn proper use of manifold gauges to connect a recovery unit to a refrigeration system to recover refrigerant in the vapor state. When you register for this class, you will be mailed a study manual, which you should review prior to class to ensure passing the EPA exam. The exam will be sent in for grading and cards will be issued and mailed back to those who pass. 11 Air Conditioning Clinic The course is a comprehensive battery of 15 sessions designed to give an overview of air conditioning fundamentals and associated systems. Each session deals with a specific area of the many disciplines required to successfully design and install air conditioning equipment. Upon completion the attendee will have a better understanding of the various equipment and systems used to provide comfort cooling today and be able to identify the individual components and their operation. Booklets on the topics are provided for the attendee to do further study. Topics include: Air handler systems, psychrometry, heat load estimation, refrigeration system components, refrigerant piping, absorption chillers, centrifugal chillers, helical-rotary chillers, fans, VAV systems, HVAC controls, chilled water systems, water source heat pumps and ice storage systems. Each student receives a manual with 17 Clinic presentations, psychrometric charts and a ductulator for reference and study($215 value). For more information on Topics, see Page 12. Who Should Attend? 14 HVAC for Property & Facility Managers This course is designed to help property and facility managers gain a greater insight in the management of HVAC in their facilities. It familiarizes them with air conditioning principles, system components, functionality and operation. Attendees will learn basic refrigeration principles, the inter-relation of components of an air conditioning system, basics of heat and heating systems, pumps, zoning, air handlers, power distribution, fundamentals of controls and other pertinent information. Class Overview: Describe an air conditioning zone and the concepts used to determine zoning needs. Identify the components and operation of a low-pressure hot water and a steam heating boiler and the associated heating coils, radiators, hot water converters and humidifiers connected to them. Describe a basic refrigeration cycle, common refrigeration applications, chiller, water cooled condensers, cooling tower, and low-pressure centrifugal chiller. Identify the factors that affect human comfort and their impact on building occupants. Describe the strategies used to manage indoor air quality and list some of the common sources of contamination. Describe a basic air conditioner air handler operation, including components, economizer cycle, control strategies and safety controls. Describe the basic operation of various single and multiple zone air handlers, including some VAV system options that improve comfort. Define basic air measurement terminology and describe the characteristics of various fans and of series and parallel piped pumps. Define basic control terminology and describe the role of the unit, system and building management level of controls. 15 Instructors n Map Instructors Elmer Franklin Elmer has been working in the HVAC industry for over 45 years and has been teaching in this trade for 35 years. He is a graduate of the Michigan Mott College s Applied Science Mechanical Technology program and the Air Force Refrigeration Specialist program. He s NATE certified and previously specialized in the building operation and maintenance field, providing technical training for 600 employees that maintained 4000 Ameritech buildings. Kyle Chapman With over 30 years in the HVAC/R industry, Kyle has worked both for Trane and Carrier in the past. Kyle has held multiple roles as an HVAC instructor, teaching for FMC, Trane Parts and Supply and also for Ingersoll Rand. He is a member of ASHRAE and ASTD (American Society of Training Development) and holds a certification for DDI Learning Systems.
