3 Troubleshooting: Nothing is working If you have a unit with an electromechanical thermostat or an Insta Manual 2001 model, follow the steps on the next page. Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user 1. Make sure the circuit breaker has not tripped and/or the fuses are not burn out; 2. For three phases models, this situation could occur when phases are not in the appropriate order. The green led light on the front panel will not light up; 3. This situation could occur if the voltage indicated on the nameplate located on the bottom or on the side of the heat pump, is not respected Take note: For the situations mentioned above, it can only be verified by an electrician. If the circuit breaker is defective, the phases are not in the appropriate order and/or the voltage indicated on the nameplate of the unit is not respected, the repair will not be covered under the warranty. IMPORTANT If you made the purchase of an automation system (or another equipment not included with the Waterco pool heat pump), make sure that the equipment was properly installed. If the problem is the installation of the other equipment, Waterco warranty will not apply and you will pay the service call fees. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. IMPORTANT If you made the purchase of an automation system (or another equipment not included with the Waterco pool heat pump), make sure that the equipment was properly installed. If the problem is the installation of the other equipment, Waterco warranty will not apply and you will pay the service call fees. 1. Make sure the circuit breaker has not tripped and/or the fuses are not burn out; Take note: In the situation mentioned above, it can only be verified by an electrician. If the circuit breaker is defective, the repair will not be covered under the warranty. 2. For model Insta Manual 2001 only, make sure the switch is in the On position; 3. For units with an electromechanical thermostat only, the position of the electromechanical thermostat must be higher than the water temperature in the pool. Otherwise, change the setting of the electromechanical thermostat. It is completely normal that the pool heat pump stop functioning when the water temperature reaches the desired level. The pool heat pump will start functioning again when the water temperature goes down. No intervention is necessary; 4. For units with an electromechanical thermostat only, make sure the water reaches the pool heat pump and the pool pump is completely filled to the rim. Otherwise: Fill the pool pump with water and verify that the pipes between the pool pump and the pool are watertight (there should not be any air intake); Check the skimmer basket (of the pool and pool pump) and the drain at the bottom of the pool for obstructions; Check the filter cartridges for obstructions (wash or change the cartridges, as the case may be); Make sure that the bypass valves are in the correct positions so that the water flows adequately (consult the section: Adjustment of the bypass valves in the Use and Care Guide); Do a backwash for sand filters (make sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand and verify that it does not have to be changed. Consult a swimming pool specialist, if necessary); Make sure the vacuum robot is disconnected so that the water flows freely; If you have a two speeds pool pump, make sure it works in the highest speed. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. Identify the analyser code that the electronic control displays and refer to the section: Service Analyser Codes ; 2. If the electronic control displays digits, make sure that the electronic control is programmed correctly. In the Use and Care Guide, refer to the section Operation of your pool heat pump and select the programming to do according to the model of the electronic control; Note: This situation could occur if the electrical voltage indicated on the nameplate located on the base or on the side of the unit is not respected. 7 Troubleshooting: Fan doesn t work (the fan blades are not moving) Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user 1. IMPORTANT For safety, switch OFF the circuit breaker; 2. Try to rotate the fan blades of the fan with a rod to see if the motor is jammed or seized; 3. If the fan blades do not turn freely, leave the unit switched OFF and call for service; 4. If the fan blades turn freely, switch ON the circuit breaker and the pool heat pump again. ** Note: The fan motor may have an electrical fault if the blades turn freely when the unit is switched OFF and does not start when the unit is switched ON. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. 8 Troubleshooting: Nothing is working except the compressor Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user For Models Aqua Nature 50, Geyser or Insta Manual 2001 IMPORTANT For all models Aqua Nature XL or XLR 50, Geyser XL or XLR 50 or all older units that the electrical connection goes directly to the electrical panel box on the contactor (inside of the pool heat pump), make sure with your electrician that the connections were done adequately on the terminals L1 & L2 (Fig. 1) of the contactor and not directly on the terminals T1 & T2 (Fig. 2), which would cause this situation. 9 Troubleshooting: Fan blades turn but compressor is not functioning If you have an Insta Manual 2001, follow the steps in the next page. Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user The pool heat pump has a built in time delay which prevents the compressor from starting immediately. In that case, the compressor will start in 3 to 5 minutes. If the unit is in defrost mode, the compressor will start between 3 to 20 minutes. It can sometimes be difficult to make the difference between the noise coming from the compressor and the noise coming from the fan motor. To avoid unnecessary service call fees, follow the steps below: 1. Check if the air being discharged from the fan blades is colder than the ambient air. If the air being discharged by the fan blades is colder, it means the compressor is functioning correctly; 2. Turn off the pool heat pump then immediately turn it back on; 3. As soon as the fan blades start turning, wait a minimum of 3 5 minutes. The compressor should start up after this time and you will be able to identify a different sound made by the compressor when it starts; 4. If the compressor is functioning but shuts off immediately, consult the troubleshooting: Compressor starts and stops. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. Page 9 / 35

10 Troubleshooting: Fan blades turn but compressor is not functioning For model Insta Manual Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user To restart the pool heat pump, follow the instructions below, in the order stated; Turn the heat pump switch to the Off position; Wait for three (3) minutes to allow the pressure to decrease; Open the switch access panel; Press the high pressure cut out switch; Close the switch access panel; Check the flow of water coming from the pool pump; Turn the pool heat pump switch to the On position. Otherwise: Fill the pool pump with water and verify that the pipes between the pool pump and the pool are watertight (there should not be any air intake); Check the skimmer basket (of the pool and pool pump) and the drain at the bottom of the pool for obstructions; Check the filter cartridges for obstructions (wash or change the cartridges, as the case may be); Make sure that the bypass valves are in the correct positions so that the water flows adequately (consult the section: Adjustment of the bypass valves in the Use and Care Guide); Do a backwash for sand filters (make sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand and verify that it does not have to be changed. 11 Troubleshooting: There is water around the pool heat pump Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user It is normal to see water condensation running from the unit base. There will be an average of 1 to 1.5 gallons (4 to 6 liters) of condensed water per hour being discharged from the unit base. In order to avoid water accumulation, you may use decorative rocks around the concrete slab or a basin under the unit. Make sure that clearances around the unit are respected. To test the unit and confirm you have no pool water leaking from the unit, perform the following test which is best performed early in the morning and continuing for the whole day. 1. IMPORTANT Turn off the pool heat pump from the circuit breaker. The unit must not be in function to perform this test; 2. Turn off the pool pump; 3. Open the bypass valve (Fig. 1); 4. Close the IN water valve (Fig. 2) and the OUT water valve (Fig. 3); 5. Restart the pool pump. The pool heat pump must remain OFF; 6. When all of the water around the base of the pool heat pump has dried off, turn on the IN and OUT valves on the pool heat pump and close the bypass valve to allow full water flow through the pool heat pump. Fig. 2 Fig. 1 Fig If water is now seen running from the outside of the pool heat pump or inside the pool heat pump after a short period of time, call the customer service department. If no water is seen after a short period of time it would be assumed the water was condensation which is normal. ***If the problem persists, call the customer service department. Page 11 / 35

12 Troubleshooting: Compressor starts and stops If you have a unit with an electronic control with no analysis code, follow the steps in the next page. Make sure to follow the diagram below and make sure that the water inlet and outlet of the unit have not been reversed during the installation. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. Make sure that the water inlet and outlet of the unit have not been reversed during the installation; 3. It is normal for this situation to occur at the beginning of the season since the water temperature as well as the outside temperature are cold. Atmospheric conditions should be above 52 F (11 C) and pool water should be above 65 F (18 C) for all models in order to obtain maximum efficiency. 4. Make sure the water reaches the pool heat pump and the pool pump is completely filled to the rim. Otherwise: Fill the pool pump with water and verify that the pipes between the pool pump and the pool are watertight (there should not be any air intake); Check the skimmer basket (of the pool and pool pump) and the drain at the bottom of the pool for obstructions; Check the filter cartridges for obstructions (wash or change the cartridges, as the case may be); Make sure that the bypass valves are in the correct positions so that the water flows adequately (consult the section: Adjustment of the bypass valves in the Use and Care Guide); Do a backwash for sand filters (make sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand and verify that it does not have to be changed. Clean the evaporator (grill around the pool heat pump) with gentle water spray from top to bottom and the use of a soft brush (do not use high pressure it may damage the evaporator fins). ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. 14 Troubleshooting: Pool heat pump does not heat Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user Atmospheric conditions as well as the pool water temperature should not be below the minimum operating temperatures, as stated below, in order to obtain efficiency and avoid codes from appearing on the electronic control temperature display. These codes are not generally a problem with the pool heat pump at these conditions and is not covered by the warranty. If temperatures are below the minimum temperatures, the pool heat pump should not be operated and must be switched off. For Electroheat SubZero and Reversible (XLR) units, they will automatically stop without human intervention. Model Atmospheric conditions must be above: Water temperature must be above: Electroheat SubZero 32 F (0 C) 50 F (10 C) Reversible models (XLR) 43 F (6 C) 65 F (18 C) All other models 52 F (11 C) 65 F (18 C) Improper installation may cause this situation and will need to be corrected by the owner. 1. Make sure the bypass valves are in the correct position to ensure sufficient water flow. Insufficient water flow will cause the compressor and/or the complete unit to shut off early; 2. If you have installed a timer or the pool heat pump is equipped with an integrated timer; make sure it is programmed to allow the pool pump to work for sufficient time in order to reach the programmed temperature; 3. Ensure the evaporator is cleaned regularly with a light spray of water and allowed to dry before restarting the pool heat pump, to avoid premature ice build up on the evaporator; 4. Waterco recommends the use of a solar cover to retain heat in pool water. Pools without cover lose 2 to 3 times more heat than pools with solar cover; 5. Make sure the electronic control of your pool heat pump has been programmed correctly; 6. If the unit continually fails to reach the desired water temperature, we suggest to complete the following analysis chart and to forward it to Waterco to evaluate the situation and in order to avoid unnecessary service fees. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. These codes are not generally a problem with the pool heat pump at these conditions and is not covered by the warranty. If the evaporator is dusty or dirty, clean it with a light spray of water and allow it to dry (do not use high pressure as it may damage the evaporator fins). Let the evaporator dry before starting the unit again, to avoid the situation from repeating itself; 4. When the unit is dry, you may turn back ON the circuit breaker; 5. Ensure that the clearances around the unit are respected. An improper installation may cause this situation permanently and the installation will have to be corrected. This situation is not covered by the warranty. 6. When the unit has been switched ON, ensure the fan motor is working (fan blades will be turning) and the compressor is operating; 7. If the fan blade does not turn and the compressor is functioning, notify customer service. **If the pool heat pump requires a service, the owner of the pool heat pump will need to make sure the unit has been switched OFF to allow any ice to melt prior to any technician attending. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. 17 Troubleshooting: Circuit breaker trips Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user IMPORTANT: If you have purchased a remote control (or other equipment), make sure that the equipment was properly installed. If the problem is the installation of the other equipment, Waterco warranty will not apply and you will pay the service call fees. 1. The amperage of the circuit breaker AND the electrical wiring must be as the instructions on the pool heat pump name plate, otherwise notify your installer or electrician to correct this problem. This situation is not covered under the warranty. 2. If the circuit breaker and electrical wiring are as stated, make sure the drains, located on each side of the base of the pool heat pump are not obstructed. Circuit Breaker: May vary, according to the model of the pool heat pump, between 20 and 50 amps. Electrical Wiring: May vary between 12 AWG to 6 AWG. 18 Troubleshooting: The pool heat pump is noisy Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user 1. Check that the pool heat pump is levelled and on a solid base to prevent any risk of vibration; 2. Ensure the noise is coming from the pool heat pump, not from other equipment which will not be covered by the warranty (for example: noise coming from the bypass valve, pool pump, etc); 3. An improper installation may cause this situation permanently and the installation will need to be corrected. This situation is not be covered by the warranty. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. Page 18 / 35

19 Troubleshooting: The temperature shown on the pool heat pump is not the same than the pool thermometer Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user It is possible to have a temperature variation between the one shown on the pool heat pump s electronic control temperature display and the pool thermometer which may be read from different locations. Instructions to be followed only for the electronic control with diagnostics (Fig. 1); reversible electronic control with diagnostics (XLR Fig. 2) and electronic control (Fig. 3) as the images shown here: CEL. With the use of an accurate thermometer, read the pool water temperature; 2. Read the temperature displayed on the pool heat pump electronic control to determine the differential; 3. Subtract the pool water temperature from the pool heat pump displayed temperature (see example below); Example: Temperature of the pool water MINUS temperature displayed on the electronic control of the unit. 26 C (79 F) MINUS 24 C (75 F) Result: Variation of 2 C (4 F) 4. Identify the variation and proceed to the calibration; 5. Press simultaneously the UP and DOWN arrow keys until the programmed temperature is displayed (the temperature you have previously set) then release both buttons; 6. Press the ON/OFF button and release; 7. Using the UP or DOWN arrows, enter the calibration value, (as per example, the electronic control must display the digit 2 for C and 4 for F ); 8. After 5 seconds when all the buttons have remained untouched, the display temperature will show the pool water temperature as per your thermometer. If this is the case, the calibration process was successful. ***If the problem persists, call customer service department. Page 19 / 35

20 Section: Service Analyser Codes Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user Most problems will be detected by the electronic control and a code will appear on the electronic control display (depending of the model of your pool heat pump). Make sure you follow the Remedy / Action instructions when possible, before making a service call request and avoid paying unnecessary service call fees. If the code remains on the display after you have followed the Action / Remedy instructions, please call customer service department. Code Problem Action / Remedy dpd oc2 Sc2 Problem: The intake temperature probe has a loose connection or is faulty. The probe will need to be checked and replaced if required. Action / Remedy: Contact customer service department. FLo FL3 nfl Problem: No water flow, insufficient water flow through the pool heat pump or the water pressure switch needs to be adjusted or is defective. Action / Remedy: If the pool pump is connected to the pool heat pump, make sure the electronic control that runs the pool pump and the pool heat pump are programmed correctly (Consult, in the Use and Care Guide, the section: How to program the Multi Function electronic control timer to control your pool pump filtration ). If the code is still displayed: - Make sure the pool pump is switched ON; - Press SET or ON/OFF depending on the model, to restart the pool heat pump; - On new installations, ensure the installation instructions were respected; - Check that the pool pump is filled with water to the rim and that water is flowing correctly through the pool pump up to the pool heat pump; - Check the skimmer basket (of the pool and pool pump) and the drain at the bottom of the pool for obstructions; - Check the filter cartridges for obstructions (wash or change the cartridges, as the case may be); - Do a backwash for sand filters (make sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand and verify that it needs to be changed. Consult a swimming pool specialist, if necessary); - Make sure that the bypass valves are in the correct positions so that the water flows adequately; - Make sure the vacuum robot is disconnected so that the water flows freely; - If you have a two speeds pool pump, make sure it works in the highest speed. 21 Section: Service Analyser Codes Preliminary Troubleshooting steps End user (continued) Code Problem Action / Remedy FS FS4 DEF Problem: Normal defrost cycle. The fan blades are turning but the compressor has stopped. For Electroheat SubZero and Reversible model, the fan blades do not turn but the compressor runs. For Electroheat SubZero model: If the unit carries out 5 consecutives defrost cycles of 15 minutes or less, the pool heat pump is then put into protection mode and display FS4. During this mode, the fan blade turns but the compressor will not work for 30 minutes in order to cool down the evaporator. The unit restarts automatically when the external temperature is at 34 F (1 C). For Reversible (XLR) Model: If the unit performs 4 consecutives cycles (heating and defrost) within 1 hour, the unit goes into protection mode and alternately displays the water temperature and the DEF code. The fan motor runs for 30 minutes to cool down the evaporator and then stops. The compressor is always off. The unit restarts automatically when the outside temperature is 43 F (6 C) and more. Action / Remedy: This situation is normal during the defrost cycle. Atmospheric conditions as well as the pool water temperature should not be below the minimum operating temperatures, as stated below, in order to obtain efficiency and avoid codes from appearing on the electronic control temperature display. These codes are not generally a problem with the pool heat pump at these conditions and is not covered by the warranty. If temperatures are below the minimum temperatures, the pool heat pump should not be operated and must be switched off. For Electroheat SubZero and Reversible (XLR) units, they will automatically stop without human intervention. Action / Remedy: If the LP3 code is displayed, press the SET button before getting to the next step; Atmospheric conditions as well as the pool water temperature should not be below the minimum operating temperatures, as stated below, in order to obtain efficiency and avoid codes from appearing on the electronic control temperature display. These codes are not generally a problem with the pool heat pump at these conditions and is not covered by the warranty. If temperatures are below the minimum temperatures, the pool heat pump should not be operated and must be switched off. For Electroheat SubZero and Reversible (XLR) units, they will automatically stop without human intervention. If the HP code is triggered and displayed 3 times, this will cause the pool heat pump to shut down automatically. The HP3 code will then appear permanently (except for electronic control with diagnostics and reversible (XLR). IMPORTANT: When the HP3 code is permanently displayed, before performing the steps below, press the SET button for the Multi Function Electronic Control and ON/OFF button for the electronic control with diagnostics and the reversible electronic control with diagnostics (XLR). Note: The pool pump will stop functioning only if the internal time delay of the pool heat pump is being used. Action / Remedy: Make sure the water reaches the pool heat pump and the pool pump is completely filled to the rim. Fill the pool pump with water and verify that the pipes between the pool pump and the pool are watertight (there should not be any air intake); Check the skimmer basket (of the pool and pool pump) and the drain at the bottom of the pool for obstructions; Check the filter cartridges for obstructions (wash or change the cartridges, as the case may be); Make sure that the bypass valves are in the correct positions so that the water flows adequately (consult the section: Adjustment of the bypass valves in the Use and Care Guide); Do a backwash for sand filters (make sure that there is a sufficient amount of sand and verify that it does not have to be changed. Consult a swimming pool specialist, if necessary); Make sure the vacuum robot is disconnected so that the water flows freely; If you have a two speeds pool pump, make sure it works in the highest speed Page 23 / 35

Action / Remedy: Reprogram the desired water temperature setting to a higher setting for the Multi Functions Electronic Control. For the electronic control with diagnostics and the reversible electronic control with diagnostics (XLR), press the ON/OFF button. PSD oc1, Sc1 Problem: The water temperature probe has a loose connection or is faulty. The probe will need to be checked and replaced if required. Action / Remedy: Contact customer service department. Problem: Water temperature is higher than 45 C (113 F). This code is only displayed on the ot electronic control with diagnostics and reversible electronic control with diagnostics (XLR). 27 Flow switch adjustment The flow switch is located in the electrical box (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 You must turn off the breaker before opening the electrical box. On the front of the flow switch, you must push up the black plastic tab to unlock the adjustment pressure wheel (Fig. 2). Fig. 2 IMPORTANT The pool pump must be turned off to be able to correctly adjust the pressure. Turn the adjustment wheel (Fig. 3) until there is no more electrical continuity between the common and the contact normally open. Fig. 3 The adjustment must be repeated until the desired pressure is reached. When the desired pressure is adjusted, push down the plastic tab to lock the adjustment wheel. Page 27 / 35
