Multi-Flex Five Layer Composite Pipe Multi-Flex Pipe (P-A-P) consist of five layers. The outside layer is hi-density polyethylene while the inside layer is made up of cross-linked polyethylene. These two layers are tightly bonded with a special melt adhesive in the mid-layer of aluminum, which is longitudinally joined using an ultrasonic overlap welding technique. All these layers are extruded in one step to ensure a strong and solid Aluminum construction. Cross Linked PE The end result is a hygienic and toxic-free product. Bacterial growth is eliminated by preventing water, gas and oxygen permeability. 7 Technical Data for Multi-Flex Pipe Thermal conductivity Coefficient of thermal expansion Bend radius Working temperature Oxygen -permeability Coefficient of roughness Corrosion resistance Burning resistance Hygiene Burst pressure/working Life span/warranty Detectable Static shield UV rating 0.26 Btu (IT) foot/hr/sq.ft./ F inch/(m.k) 5 x D (D = outside diameter) -40 F to 125 F e-5 inch Excellent Grade B1 of GB8624 Excellent 900 psi / 540 psi 50yr / 35yr Walls & underground with metal detector Excellent PPI 5306 according to Arizona weathering standards Description Of Technical Data Thermal Conductivity 0.26 Btu (IT) foot/hr/sq.ft./ F is about 1/100 that of steel pipe and several times higher than that of insulating materials. Heat preservation and energy-saving properties greatly minimize heat loss during water flow. This advantage allows extreme temperatures - especially for surfaces use in extreme cold conditions. It therefore has superior resistance to high temperatures, high pressure, corrosion and fire. Coefficient of Thermal Expansion inch/(m.k) is only 1/8 that of all polyethylene pipe and almost the same as that of steel pipe. See table. This advantage gives the user the option of laying the pipe inside concrete without worrying about a burst pipe or cracked wall. The aluminum middle layer has a very low linear heat expansion coefficient. Bending Radius The uniquely bonded layers of the Multi-Flex Pipe allow it to be bent at five or more times its outside diameter. It is advisable to use a bending spring or pipe bending tool, particularly with larger diameter pipes - but the smaller diameter pipe can also be easily bent by hand, saving both time and money. Working Temperature (F) The pipe has a high temperature and high pressure resistance, and can work under continuous normal working pressure with water temperature of -40 F to 125 F. 7

8 Oxygen Permeability The overlap-welded aluminum layer secures a 100% oxygen barrier and therefore prevents growth of microorganisms and bacteria. This hygienic advantage is especially well accepted and appreciated in the plumbing, medical and food industries. Coefficient of Roughness Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) can be compared with thousands of steel wires that form a cable, instead of a solid steel tube. This smooth inner surface of the pipe reduces flow resistance to fluids and has the ability to convey water 30% more efficiently than metal pipes. Corrosion Resistance Besides eliminating corrosion, especially beneficial in coastal areas, Multi-Flex s multi-layer pipe does not dissolve in any known solutions and is resistant against various kinds of acids, alkali and salt at normal temperatures. Corrosion-resistant properties prevent encrustation build-up in the pipes, enabling the free flow of water and eliminating rust that can cause stains in tubs and basins. Burning Resistance The P-A-P composite structure of the Multi-Flex Pipe has a much better burning resistance than other polyethylene pipes. With the test by the National Fire-Proof Construction Materials Quality Supervisory Test Center, the burning resistance reaches Grade B1 of GB8624, the same stipulations that are used for wire and cable conduit plastic material. Hygiene Multi-Flex multi-layer composite pipe is hygienic, non-toxic, rust-free and prevents growth of microorganisms, therefore protecting against contamination of water and health risks. Burst Pressure The instant burst pressure of Multi-Flex Pipe tested at 900 psi. This is significantly more than is required for residential water recirculation, HVAC, refrigeration and certain gases. Lifespan Under normal operating conditions the Multi-Flex Pipe has a lifespan of 50 years, giving the end user peace of mind - and the installer more credibility. Detectability Metal detectors can be used to detect the pipe underground, in walls and in floors, thanks to the pipe s aluminum content. Static Shield Due to excellent static shield properties, it is often used to cover electrical cabling and computer cabling. 8

Connections & Fittings Multi-Flex Pipe Systems manufactures a wide range of fittings. Press fittings, compression fittings and clamp fitting are used for a vast range of applications. The press fittings and crimp fittings are the most popular products for water reticulation in residential, commercial and industrial applications. For industrial and commercial applications where large volumes of fluid are conveyed, the clamp fittings are used on the larger-size composite pipe. Multi-Flex Pipe Systems has a full range of press fittings manufactured from brass and nickel-plated brass that consist of a double-layer O-ring system with a stainless steel crimp sleeve. The joining system can be compared to that of a hydraulic system accommodating high pressure. Electrical Corrosion Scientific tests have proven that if aluminum and copper are in contact with each other for more than eight months, obvious aging and electrical corrosion can occur. Multi- Flex Pipe has a polyethylene pad to prevent this. Specifications The Multi-Flex Pipe System must be installed using the Multi- Flex Pipe. All connections must be made using the Multi-Flex press, clamp or compression fittings and must be in accordance with the corresponding Multi-Flex Installation Guidelines. Polyethylene Pad (to prevent electrolysis) Brass Fittings and Valves Multi-Flex Composite Pipe has a polyethylene pad on the bottom of every fitting, completely separating the aluminum and brass fittings or valves. This prevents corrosion and increases the reliability and length of use. 10

11 For normal composite pipe joints, Multi-Flex supplies two types of typical fittings: Press Fitting Series Our press fittings are made of high-quality materials, created through a cold-cut and hot-forged process. They have a new design and attractive appearance, and feature heat-treated technology. Unique joining tools are designed for reliable, faster connections, and press fittings create great sealing for a long working life. Press fittings are useful for a wide range of applications. They are used for hot and cold water supply, heating, inert gases, gas supply, oxygen and air supply, and other challenging environmental applications such as vibration-prone areas. Crimp Sleeve O-Rings Compression Fitting Series Our compression fittings are used in many applications. They work well at higher pressures, and with toxic gases. During manufacturing, a forging method is used to rid the surface of impurities. This increases the intensity and pressure to enterprise standards and makes the fitting particularly effective against leakage. The brass C-Ring in the fitting brings double protection of tightness and non-leakage. 11

General Installation Practices All planning, installation and design work should be carried out in accordance with the national standards and U.S. codes for the specific installation as well as Multi-Flex technical & installation information. Refer to the Hydraulic Calculation Table in the Appendix at the end of the guide to determine the pressure loss when designing the pipe system Handling and Storage of Product 1. Pipes and fittings should be treated carefully during transportation, load and unload. Do not throw, fall, roll or drag any of the products. 2. Store away from any polluted areas, and do not store with oil or chemicals. 3. Do not store in direct sunlight. Keep away from heat sources. Pay attention to fire safety. 4. Pipes should be stored on a flat surface. Avoid pressure which may distort the pipe or cause mechanical damages. 5. Product should be stored and piled in the original packaging. The stacking height for piles should be: Pipes: less than 6 feet high Fittings: less than 3 feet high Marking on packages will be visible and will read Multi-Flex Pipe Systems Before any installation, acknowledge the mark on the pack as well as on the product. 13

Connecting Multi-Flex Pipe to the fitting Step A: Cut the pipe to the required length with the special pipe scissor or cutter. Step B: Ream the pipe by pushing the reamer into the pipe and turning. This cuts the pipe end straight while cutting chamfers on the inside and outside of the pipe end. The design of the reamer will prevent shavings from falling into the pipe. Step C: Inspect the stainless steel sleeve for any cracks, and then fit it over the pipe to be flush with the pipe end. Inspect the fitting to ensure: There are no cracks. That the white collar is: fitted, is intact and is without any lacerations. That the 2 O-rings: are fitted, are intact and are without any cracks or lacerations. O-Ring Collar O-Rings Sleeve Step D: Carefully push the fitting into the pipe until it clips into the white collar without dislocating the O-rings, and without moving the sleeve away from the pipe end. 14

15 Step E: Crimp the sleeve with a REMS crimping tool. 1. Locate the tool s jaws tight against the collar. 2. Compress the sleeve by closing the REMS crimping tool until the handles meet and make a clicking sound. Do this only once. Step F: Visually inspect the fitting, and test the crimp with the crimp tester tool if needed. Step G: Bend the pipe to the desired angle using the correct size-bending spring or REMS hydraulic bender Layout of Pipework for Installations The following requirements shall be considered and applied in addition to any similar specification details that might be introduced by the installer: 1. Connecting pipes shall be firmly anchored to prevent water hammer and the dislodgement of joints. 2. Unless otherwise approved, pipes laid underground shall have a soil cover over the outside of at least 450mm, but not more than 1m, for any pipe of nominal diameter less than 75mm. 3. Where any portion of a pipe is concealed in a floor, concrete slab or wall, the following shall apply: a. Striker plates should be used inside the wall (see fig for examples of striker plates) b. Adequate measure shall be taken to protect the portion of pipe from external pressure or from the transmission of any load to it. c. No pipe shall be installed within the cavity of any cavity wall, nor shall pipe pass through concrete expansion or concrete joints. 4. Multi-Flex pipe may not be used as the safety valve pipe on water heaters. 15

The pipeline will expand with an increase in temperature. This phenomenon is applicable to all pipe types and although it does not have an adverse effect on the performance of the pipe and joint, it must be taken into account when installing hot water systems. b. For both straight laying or non-straight laying pipelines with a pipe diameter of less than or equal to 1 inch, the pipeline expansion compensation is not required. c. To accommodate for the expansion of the pipe within the structure, you must provide insulated expansion bends at least every 30ft. When this has been insured, the pipe can be buried or built into the structure. See diagram below: Spacing between the fixing and supporting brackets Nominal Diameter DE (inches) Vertical Pipe (inches) Horizontal Pipe (inches) Expansion Bend d. It is preferred to always provide the pipes with a protective sleeve or insulation. The sleeve has a protective function, while the insulation not only protects and thermally insulates the pipe - it also prevents the formation of condensation. To determine the insulation thickness, the following rule can apply: 1.5 x L (change in length) e. Pipe brackets must be Fig

17 used when fixing pipelines to the surface. The brackets can be synthetic or metal with a synthetic inner lining for protection of the pipe. The specified maximum distances between brackets must be adhered to. See figure on the previous page. Pipe Brackets L L Support brackets or holder bats must be fitted on either side of all fittings The pipe brackets have a twofold purpose: (1) to support the pipe network, and (2) to accommodate the thermal length changes of the pipeline with sliding and fixed points, usually with correctly calculated expansion bends and expansion loops. The sliding points must be such that the pipe has continuous clearance. The sliding point may not become a fixed point when the pipe expands. The correct placing of sliding points and fixed points is very important when expansion bends and expansion loops are used. In all cases where the pipeline changes direction, expansion bends must be provided for. The minimum length for the expansion bend can be calculated on the basis of the following formula: where: * * L b = C * (D * where: C = material constant = 33 D = outside diameter of the pipe = square root L L LL F F L b L b F 17

18 When a long pipe does not change direction, expansion loops are required. An expansion loop is also called a lyra-, omega- or horseshoe bend. The drawings below clarify what an expansion loop is. The expansion loop is, in principle, formed by 2 expansion bends. A fixed point must be provided at the top or bottom in the middle of the loop. Flow Flow Flow Flow The installer must also ensure that pipes can move freely when piping runs from floors to a riser pipe in a shaft, or when piping runs between rooms or buildings through walls or structures. Also here, the installer must provide for change in length due to expansion. This change can be accommodated by expansion bends or loops. Sleeve L b L b Lb If the riser pipe is longer than 30 feet, a fixed point must be provided. It is recommended to have this point in the middle of the pipe because expansion forces generated are smaller. When pipes are fitted through holes in a wall or ceiling, the pipe must at least be protected with a sleeve. In addition, the pipes should never be fitted around a sharp edge, in order to prevent kinking or chafing. The installer should round off any sharp edges. Round edge Sharp edge 18

Insulation Thermal insulation may be required to reduce heat loss through the pipe. The fluid (water) flowing inside the pipe should be prevented from freezing at all times. Snap-on, preformed glass fibre insulation or other approved isolation material with a density of at least 3.75 lb/ft 3 (60 kg/m 3 ) should be used. The insulation thickness shall be as follows: Service Cold water Hot water Nominal Pipe Size (up to 2 inches) 0.6 inch 1 inch Equipment and piping must first be pressure tested before any insulation is installed. It is not always possible to completely prevent static water from freezing. In these cases, it would be necessary to circulate warm water periodically through the pipe system Protection from Ultra Violet Rays In the event that the piping system is exposed to direct sunlight, such an installation should be protected against ultra violet exposure. This protection can be done by covering the pipe. The pipe can also be painted with a UV-resistant paint for protection. It is important to apply an undercoat such as Plascon s Melamine Primer or Rust-Oleum s Pegalink-Universal Adhesion primer before the final UV-resistant coat is applied Installation Requirements According to ICC Listing During placement of cover over the tubing, the tube must be maintained at the greater of 1.5 times the working pressure or 100 psi (689.4 kpa). The tubing installation must be pressure-tested for leaks in the presence of the code official or the code official s designated representative. When installation is in fire-resistance-rated assemblies, evidence must be provided to the code official of compliance with International Building Code (IBC) Section 713 (penetrations), Uniform Building Code (UBC) Section 709 (walls and partitions) or UBC Section 710 (floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling), as applicable. The tubing must not be used as a source of electrical ground. Pipe bends must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer s published installation instructions. When the system is embedded in concrete, tubing must be covered a minimum of 0.75 inch (19.1 mm) and installation must comply with IBC Section or UBC Section , as applicable. The tubing is manufactured in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, under a quality control program with surveillance inspections by ICC-ES. 19

Home-Run Manifold Systems Protection against concealed leaks: Benefits in High Rise Multi-Family Construction WATER With this system, a main water line feeds the manifold, which is located within the mechanical closet or washer/dryer closet (commonly 3/4 or 1 ); smaller lines run from the manifold to each fixture (commonly 1/2 ). Any fixture in the apartment can be shut off at the manifold. The manifold system removes joint connections at every fitting and decreases the number of connections by approximately 100 to 120 connections per apartment, which in turn greatly reduces the probability and chance for leaks above concealed spaces. Leaks above concealed spaces are detrimental in high rise stacked construction, as damages likely occur on floors below, resulting in displaced tenants, interruptions in rent cycles, extensive insurance claims and poor perception of the quality of the building systems. Leaks above concealed spaces have also caused mold growth and micro-bacterial issues that go unnoticed until a catastrophic leak occurs. A home-run manifold system with Multi-Flex Pipe Systems can help owners mitigate the risk of leaks in concealed spaces and limit the probability of leaks by decreasing connections above concealed spaces - often by over 100 connections. 30 30 A gas delivery system consisting of MULTI-FLEX PIPE offers significant advantages over other gas delivery systems because of its wall dimensions and corrugated design. In contrast to rigid steel pipe, MULTI-FLEX PIPE does not require intermediate joints in most installations because the tubing is capable of being installed in one continuous run, reducing not only the total number of joints, but also the potential for leaks at joints. MULTI-FLEX PIPE s flexibility also affords more installation options because an installer can avoid existing obstacles, and it eliminates the repetitive measuring, cutting, threading and joint assembly that are common with the installation of rigid steel piping systems. Although MULTI-FLEX PIPE provides significant advantages over more rigid gas delivery systems, its wall dimensions may make it more likely than steel pipe to be punctured by a nail or other sharp object, or damaged by other extraordinary forces such as a lightning strike, depending on the circumstances. It is well known that lightning is a highly destructive force. Therefore, the user must ensure that the system is properly bonded and grounded. In order to maximize protection of the entire structure from lightning damage, the user should consider installation of a lightning protection system per NFPA 780 and other standards, particularly in areas prone to lightning. Note that lightning protection systems as set forth in NFPA 780 and/or other standards go beyond the scope of this manual. Users of MULTI-FLEX PIPE should consider all of the limitations and benefits of MULTI-FLEX PIPE for their particular situation. Installers shall provide building owners and electricians with the required information documentation discussing these limitations and benefits Limitations of Manual This document is intended to aid the user in the design, installation and testing of MULTI-FLEX PIPE Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing to distribute fuel gas in residential housing units and commercial structures. It would be impossible for this guide to anticipate and cover every possible variation in housing configurations and construction styles, appliance loads and local restrictions. Therefore, there may be applications which are not covered in this guide. For applications beyond the scope of this guide, contact Multi-Flex Pipe Systems Engineering Department. The techniques included within this guide are recommended practice for generic applications. These practices must be reviewed for compliance with all applicable local fuel gas and building codes. Accordingly, where local gas or building codes impose greater requirements than this manual, you should adhere to the local code requirements. This system and related components should be used only as fuel gas piping where the operating gas pressure does not exceed 25 PSI Applicable Standards & Listings Multi-Flex Gold Gas ICC-ES PMG 1142 Listing AGA - American Gas Association 30

Warnings 1. The installation of MULTI-FLEX PIPE must be performed by a trained, qualified installer. The installer must also meet all qualifications required by the state and/ local administrative authority administering the provisions of the code where the piping is installed. 2. All piping systems using MULTI-FLEX PIPE shall be designed and installed according to the requirements of this guide. 3. Only Multi-Flex components may be used in the system. Components from other systems are not interchangeable. 4. Installation shall be in accordance with local codes, or in their absence, in accordance with the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1 in the USA, and CAN/CGA - B149.1 & B149.2 in Canada. In cases where the requirements of this guide are in conflict with the local code, the local code must take precedence, unless the local authority having jurisdiction approves a variance, or change. 5. Inspection, testing, and purging shall be performed according to the procedures in Part 4 of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, and/or - B149 installation Codes or in accordance with local codes. 6. The gas piping system and related components shall be used only in systems where the operating gas pressure does not exceed 25 PSIG. 7. Tubing with covering may be installed in or routed through air plenums, ducts, or other areas which may be limited by building codes to materials having maximum ASTM E84 ratings of 25 Flame Spread and 50 Smoke Density. Other procedures are to be followed by the installer to meet local building codes with respect to Flame Spread and Smoke Density regulations for nonmetallic materials. 8. Tubing may be routed through concrete floors or walls, provided it is passed through previously embedded conduit. Tubing shall not be buried directly underground. 9. The CSST is typically routed: Beneath, through and alongside floor joists Inside interior wall cavities On top of ceiling joists in attic space 10. Carefully unwind and route the tubing from the reel to the required location, making certain not to kink, tangle or apply excessive force. 11. Tubing end must be temporarily capped or taped closed prior to installation to prevent contamination from foreign material. 12. When installing MULTI-FLEX PIPE avoid sharp bends, stretching, kinking, twisting, or contacting sharp objects. The tubing must be replaced if damage occurs. 31

Gas Applications Multi-Flex Gas Pipe Multi-Flex Gas Pipe (yellow) is used underground up to the gas meter. Transition Risers are used to connect the underground pipe to the aboveground Corrugated Stainless Steel Tube that is used throughout the system. A gas delivery system consisting of Multi-Flex Pipe offers significant advantages over other gas delivery systems. No sleeve is needed for underground piping and in contrast to rigid steel pipe, Multi-Flex Pipe does not require intermediate joints in most installations because the tubing is capable of being installed in one continuous run, reducing not only the total number of joints, but also the potential for leaks at joints. GAS Multi-Flex Pipe s flexibility also affords more installation options because an installer can avoid existing obstacles, and it eliminates the repetitive measuring, cutting, threading and joint assembly that are common with installation of rigid steel piping systems Transition Risers Transition Risers offer a safe and simple method of connecting and transitioning Multi-Flex Pipe to steel pipe. They offer the ability to transition Multi-Flex Pipe from a below-ground application to an above-ground piping system. Compression fittings allow the user to connect and/or transition P-A-P to steel without the need for fusion equipment. Proper installation of these fittings provide a mechanical joint that is stronger than the PE pipe itself. These fittings have been safely and effectively used in Natural Gas Plumbing, Pool and Spa applications and LP Gas. Transition Risers and Compression Fittings can be selected from a group of standard items or can be manufactured to meet the customer s specific requirements Features and Benefits PE-to-Steel transition joint is stronger than the PE pipe. The riser utilizes an O-Ring design for added protection (one-piece design). All products are protected with an electrostatically applied fusion-bonded epoxy powder coating specifically designed for the exterior of gas petroleum pipelines. 32

Take care to avoid damage to the outer layer. Avoid over-bending, which can cause the inner tube to crack or tear. Immediately remove any part of the pipe that is damaged by cutting it out. Keep to the instructions in the training manual. After installation, always conduct a pressure test to eliminate possible leaks. Only LPGA-certified installers are allowed to use the pipe for gas installations Installation Requirements Pre-Installation: Design, construction and final inspection of the installation must be in accordance with the LPGA standards. Keep out of direct sun as CSST coating is not UV resistant. Visually inspects the outer layer to verify it is not damaged, as it protects the inner stainless steel from acid and water with a PH less than 7. Use the correct tools to cut both the inner and outer layer. After cutting the CSST make sure it has no sharp edges that can damage the washer inside the fitting. Use a file (Second Cut File) to remove all the sharp edges that may be caused by the cutter. Remove all filings as they may cause blockings in the gas appliances. Stay within the limits of the prescribed bending radius. (Fig.3) 43

44 During Installation: CSST pipe can be used from the source from which the gas is drawn to the appliance that uses the gas. This includes the following; Outside ( Not UV resistant, always cover the tube) Under floor Concrete Inner wall Ceilings Stay within the Bending Radius as indicated below Nominal Diameter 10A, 13A, 15A Minimum Bending Radius (inside radius in inches) 3/4 (0.787) Inside Radius = R 18A, 20A 25A 32A 1 (0.984) 1 1/6 (1`.181) 1 3/5 (1.575) CSST pipe must not be exposed to: Open flames Direct sun (not UV resistant) Space within 6 inches of the appliance or the chimney (excessive heat) Only a single pipe line may run from the control box to an individual gas appliance. Do not T-off to more than one appliance per pipe line. The Control Box is the distribution point from where gas is distributed through a single pipe to all appliances inside the building structure. The control box is always situated outside the building and must have a lock to prevent unauthorized access CSST Characteristics: The corrugated stainless steel tube is manufactured out of high quality stainless steel and the outer layer consists of a fire-resistant polymer composite material. Stainless steel with a high corrosion-resistance content is used that ensures safety and a life span of 50 years or more. The CSST is flexible with a maximun bend of 120 degrees. Available in lengths up to 165 ft. 44
