9 Introduction 0-3 General Hot Melt Material Processing Instructions NOTE: Before processing hot melt material, carefully read the material manufacturer s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) or material information sheet. Nordson supplies only general processing instructions and is not liable for hazards associated with or damage caused by the use of hot melt material. Storage Store the material in dry areas at room temperature. Keep it in covered, dust-protected containers. Preparations for Material Application/Coating Keep the substrate at room temperature, dry, and free of dust and grease. Perform tests to determine the suitable hot melt material, optimum operating conditions, and preliminary treatment of the substrate for the application. Some substrates contain plasticizers and other ingredients which dissipate over time. In some cases, surfaces are treated with waxes, anti-stick oils, etc. Without adequate pretreatment, the hot melt bond in these applications may be defective at the time of dispensing. Processing Temperature The application temperature of the hot melt material at the nozzle is crucial for effective bonds. Refer to the material manufacturer s MSDS or material information sheet. Avoid unnecessary thermal stress. If the work is interrupted, reduce the melting temperature. Avoid heating the hot melt material above the prescribed processing temperature. Higher temperatures may cause charring of the hot melt material. This results in downtime. In addition, material may generate dangerous vapors at excessively high temperatures. Remove these vapors by using appropriate exhaust systems Nordson Corporation HMIPUR01_EN_B1294
10 0-4 Introduction Danger of Burns Be careful when using hot melt materials. These materials are solid at room temperature. For proper application, they may be heated to temperatures of up to 230 C (450 F). Refer to the safety instructions in the Safety section. Mixing Hot Melt Materials Avoid mixing different hot melt materials. Refer to Changing the Hot Melt Material in the Maintenance section. Disposal of Hot Melt Material Refer to the supplier s MSDS or material information sheet. Additional Note for Polyurethane (PUR) When processing Polyurethane-type hot melt materials (PUR), you must follow these additional instructions carefully: Use appropriate respiratory equipment when material vapors exceed permissible limit values. If prescribed by the material manufacturer, pressurize the applicator s tank with an inert gas blanket. During production breaks, set the temperature back and close the gun nozzles temporarily with vaseline or dip them into another suitable oil. Do not empty the tank completely. PUR material residues in bores may cure. Before longer standstill periods, purge the system with a fluid recommended by the material manufacturer. HMIPUR01_EN_B Nordson Corporation

26 2-2 Description Safety Instructions Residual Risks Prior to installation and first operation of the system, it is essential to read and follow the safety instructions. The general safety instructions are enclosed as an annex to the documentation folder or they are a section of this manual. The specific safety instructions are part of this manual. Nordson knows of no residual risks. General Information Updated Bill of Material The electrically controlled adhesive guns are designed for the application of water-based adhesives. They are particularly suited to the fast, intermittent, non-contact application of adhesive. After switching on the power to the coils inside the adhesive gun, the nozzle needle is raised, thus opening the nozzle. When the power is switched off, a spring forces the needle down, closing the nozzle. The needle stroke can be adjusted by means of an adjustable pole face which can even be turned during operation. A mounting bracket is available which can secure the adhesive gun in practically all working positions. 27 Description 2-3 Functioning The following figure illustrates the basic method of operation of an adhesive gun within a complete system. Adhesive is to be applied to a substrate (7). The transport belts (8) convey the substrates. When the leading edge of a substrate reaches the photocell (10), the beam of light sent is reflected and the program is started. The control unit compiles all the data according to the speed of the production machine. The encoder (4) is mechanically connected to the transport equipment via a gear and supplies one pulse per mm. The control unit evaluates all the data and establishes the point at which the liquid adhesive guns (5) must be activated. The pump (12) is connected to the compressed air supply (1). It operates continuously and pumps the liquid adhesive from the adhesive reservoir (11) to the liquid adhesive guns (5). A current between 0-20 ma is supplied from the control unit (3) to the proportional pressure control valve (2). The strength of the current is dependent on the speed of the production machine. The strength of the current determines how far the proportional pressure control valve (2) should be opened and the regulator (9) opens accordingly. The adhesive flows to the liquid adhesive guns (5) and is applied to the substrate. The length of the application is defined by the control unit program Nordson Corporation

34 3-4 Installation Setting the Adhesive Quantity, LA 820 The adhesive pattern is influenced by the adhesive pressure and adhesive quantity. The adhesive pressure is determined by the pump control unit according to the application speed. Fig. 3-2 O620 The adhesive gun is equipped with an adjustable pole face to adjust the adhesive quantity (4, Fig. 3-1). Turn the adjustable pole face counterclockwise using an Allen key to increase the quantity of adhesive. Reduce the quantity of adhesive by turning the key clockwise. The upper side of the adhesive gun (Fig. 3-1) is provided with reference points which indicate the setting of the adjustable pole face. Turning the adjustable pole face one graduation point adjusts the needle stroke by 0.05 mm ( ). NOTE: The default needle stroke setting is 0.15 mm ( ). To achieve this setting, turn the adjustable pole face to its bottom setting and then 3 graduations back. NOTE: Increasing the needle stroke reduces the maximum adhesive pressure. When operating at high speeds, the length of the adhesive bead is increased and, therefore, requires greater compensation. Setting the Adhesive Quantity, LA 820 RC The adhesive pattern is influenced by the adhesive pressure and adhesive quantity. The adhesive pressure is determined by the pump control unit according to the application speed. Fig. 3-3 O621 The LA 820 RC adhesive gun is equipped with an adjustable pole face to adjust the adhesive quantity (4, Fig. 3-1). Turn the adjustable pole face counterclockwise to increase the quantity of adhesive. Reduce the quantity of adhesive by turning the key clockwise. Turning the adjustable pole face one click adjusts the needle stroke by 0.02 mm ( ). The reference points are not applicable. NOTE: The default needle stroke setting is achieved by turning the adjustable pole face down fully and then turning it back 8 clicks. The adjustable pole face should be turned back a maximum of 10 clicks and a minimum of 4 clicks. NOTE: Increasing the needle stroke reduces the maximum adhesive pressure. When operating at high speeds, the length of the adhesive bead is increased and, therefore, requires greater compensation Nordson Corporation

The suitability of material, optimum working conditions and any necessary pre-treatment of the substrate must be determined by testing. Some substrates contain softeners and other components which may become volatile later. Occasionally, surfaces are covered with wax, isolating oil, etc. The bonding may fail immediately or later if pre-treatment/tests are not carried out. NOTE: Observe any comment sheets concerning the process to the material used. Compatibility of Different Types of Adhesives NOTE: Not all types of liquid adhesive are compatible. The adhesive may become degraded if improperly used, resulting in functional faults and, possibly, equipment damage. In our capacity as suppliers of adhesive guns, we assume no liability for damage to equipment, hoses and guns caused by the hardening of adhesive through improper handling. In case of doubt and/or intended change of adhesive, please contact the adhesive supplier, us or one of our representatives Nordson Corporation
38 4-2 Operation Switching Off in an Emergency Familiarize yourself thoroughly in respect of behavior in emergency situations and with the location and activation of the Emergency Stop operating elements installed in the production area. WARNING: Press the Emergency Stop switch immediately in any emergency situation. Initial Startup 1. Trigger the nearest EMERGENCY STOP element (EMERGENCY STOP button, EMERGENCY STOP ripcord or main switch with EMERGENCY STOP function). 2. Locate and clear the cause of the Emergency Stop situation before switching the system on again. 1. Set the air pressure on the pump so that the max. hydraulic pressure is not exceeded. Liquid adhesive gun LA 820 LA 820 RC Max. hydraulic pressure 20 bar (290 PSI) 25 bar (362 PSI) NOTE: A higher pressure may damage the liquid adhesive gun. 2. Place a collecting vessel underneath the gun and switch on the control unit. 3. Setup the control unit so that the adhesive flows out of the gun nozzle evenly and without any air bubbles. 4. Carry out test gluing and check the adhesive bead. If a thicker bead is required, the pressure can be increased but not in excess of the maximum hydraulic pressure. Daily Startup 1. Check whether there is sufficient adhesive in the reservoir. 2. Release the air pressure for the pump. Daily Shutdown 1. Shut off the compressed air supply to the pump (reduce to 0 bar). 2. Close the nozzle orifices with silicone paste, Nordson P/N Nordson Corporation
39 Maintenance 5-1 Section 5 Maintenance WARNING: Allow only qualified personnel to perform the following tasks. Observe and follow the safety instructions in this document and all other related documentation. The adhesive gun is easy to maintain and, in general, maintenance-free. Under normal conditions, all the components have a long service life. WARNING: Disconnect the power supply! WARNING: Shut off the adhesive supply. WARNING: When possible, always wear protective gloves when carrying out the work. Always observe the following basic points: Ensure that the material to be applied is in a clean, filtered condition. Individual operating conditions and different application materials require a corresponding minimum effort for maintenance. Do not use metallic, sharp-edged tools to clean the outside of the equipment, e.g. nozzle tips, only use soft brushes. When carrying out repair or maintenance work, keep the working space as well as the gun to be repaired as clean as possible. Adhesive guns which are soiled should be thoroughly flushed through when the opportunity occurs. This is possible particularly when the nozzle needle or material nozzles need to be replaced. The adhesive guns should not remain installed for any important maintenance work but be removed from the machine. Depressurize the material supply lines beforehand Nordson Corporation
40 5-2 Maintenance Preventive Maintenance Cleaning the Liquid Adhesive Gun Regular Maintenance It is not necessary to clean the adhesive gun if air is prevented from entering into the hydraulic system and coming into contact with the glue. If this occurs, however, the glue starts to solidify after approx. 30 minutes. The precise time varies according to the adhesive used. Blocked nozzle orifices or guns can be cleaned easily at any time. NOTE: Do not disassemble an adhesive gun in which glue has solidified! It is highly likely this would damage sensitive components. We recommend immersing the adhesive gun in warm water for 1-2 days to soften the glue. Repeat the process several times, if necessary. If the adhesive gun still cannot be disassembled, return it to us for repair. We recommend flushing the liquid adhesive guns with water twice a year. The guns should always be kept clean, residual glue and dirt being removed daily Nordson Corporation
41 Maintenance 5-3 Disassembling the LA 820 Liquid Adhesive Gun WARNING: Disconnect the power supply. WARNING: The system and material are pressurized. Shut off the compressed air supply! Otherwise, there is a considerable risk of injury. Refer to figure Prepare a vessel with water. 2. Ensure that the working area and all the tools are clean. NOTE: Foreign bodies can damage gaskets and seal fits causing leaks. 3. Place a collecting vessel under the application head. 4. Disconnect the adhesive hose from the adhesive connection (14). Seal the adhesive hose with adhesive tape or plugs so that no adhesive can escape. 5. Loosen the two fixing screws (13) and remove the manifold (12) from the adhesive gun.
