4 ( CiARBACiE & RECYCLINCi PICK UP ON'Ts O's on't put broken glass and sharp metal objects in regular garbage. Place in a sealed and clearly labelled cardboard box for garbage collectors. This will contain the glass if it breaks at collection. on't place needles in the garbage. Contact the local pharmacy for a biohazard container or visit healthunit.com/sharps-disposal OR healthsteward.ca for safe disposal information. These materials will not be collected at curbside: -scrap metal (propane tanks, BBQs, bike frames etc.) -construction & renovation materials (drywall, wood) -appliances (fridges, stoves, microwaves) -electronics (TVs, monitors, computers etc.) -loose garbage, tires, CFL light bulbs and tubes -furniture of any kind on't place garbage bags and blue bins on top of snow banks. Clear an area in the snow or leave them in your driveway to prevent them from falling into the streets Put Your garbage and recycling at the curb by 7AM but no earlier than GPM the night before. Use plastic garbage bags. Maximum weight for bags and blue bins is 20kg (441bs). Rinse out containers before putting them in your blue box. Residue left in them can attract animals, bees and wasps posing a health and safety risk to drivers. Break down cardboard to no larger than 2'x2'. 5 ---======= ==-=--=:----:--::=-= SPRINQ/FALL YAR WASTE If you are unable to take your yard waste to the landfill site, please be patient with curbside pickup. In addition to your regular garbage, only 6 bags of yard waste will be picked up per week. ( WINTER COLLECTION Sometimes w inter weather will affect curbside collection services. Snow, ice and wind can be treacherous for all drivers on the road. Curbside collection is rarely cancelled, but may be postponed. 6 WHERE OES YOUR CiARBACiE AN RECYCLINCi CiO? Garbage collected at the curb is directed to the City of Toronto Green Lane Landfill Site. Recycling collected goes to the City of London Material Recovery Facility (MRF). For a video on what happens to your recycling check out: The images to the right are from the City of London's Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF is where the recycling trucks take your Blue Box recyclables to be further sorted and shipped to processing l'e mills (paper mills, steel mills, etc.). This image shows a pile of 'paper products' \:.: and a pile of 'containers.' On close inspection you will see that there are many recyclables that are in the wrong stream because they have not been sorted properly by residents. All of these out of place materials will need to be re-sorted by the MRF staff and placed with the correct stream. Prevent light-weight materials from blowing out of blue boxes by stacking heavier items on top. ON'T OVERFLOW One of the largest contributors to litter is overflowing recycling and garbage containers. Use enough Blue Boxes to contain all of your recyclables. STUFF IT! Stuff loose paper materials into paper bags, envelopes or small boxes. THERE'S NO LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF BLUE BOXES WE WILL COLLECT! Extra recycling bins are available at the Municipal Office ($5.00 each) BAG IT! 17 KEEP THE HOLIAYS GREEN! Help create less waste by using these tips: When shopping use a reusable bag and/or put purchases in a bag you're already carrying Choose no-to-low packaging gifts, such as tickets, gift cards or memberships Use reusable cloth shopping bags, boxes, tins or tea towels as wrap for gifts Recycle greeting cards by cutting out the images to make gift tags Use brown, or packing paper and creatively decorate with drawings or stamps (this paper CAN go in the blue box) Tree-cycle!
