2 AS A HOT MIX ASPHALT PRODUCER you may find important advantages in having your own asphalt terminal. Your terminal may enable you to obtain asphalt from a variety of sources. You will be able to take advantage of reduced prices when a supplier wants to unload overstock. You will likely find deals available only to terminal operators. We can help you build the terminal you need. We provide equipment and services* to build asphalt terminals. We can build your terminal to meet your exact needs. Accordingly, the size of your terminal and its components may be significantly different from other terminals we have built. We do not try to make one size fit all. We can also retrofit an existing terminal for a variety of needs. You may want to replace old or unreliable controls and equipment with new products. You may need to expand your terminal to increase production volume. Or you may need to add equipment for production of polymer products. We can help. Our unique position Heatec occupies a unique position for building terminals. We are virtually the only company that provides a full range of services*, including terminal planning, manufacturing, setup, startup, maintenance, etc. This provides significant advantages for you, the terminal buyer. You only have to work with a single source for the widely diverse products and services involved. It greatly reduces the likelihood of costly reworks due to incompatibility and miscommunication. Source of products Many of the products for a terminal are manufactured in our factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In addition to products we make, we include products made by other reputable manufacturers, enabling us to provide a facility ready for operation. We also engage and direct the work of contractors who do on-site construction of large tanks and related services. Do it yourself options Our customers usually do their own site preparation work and building structures. But we recommend that you engage Heatec to do terminal planning work first. This significantly reduces the likelihood of oversights and costly remedies. Even if you want your own people to do some of the work or use others, we can still provide equipment and services for major portions of the work. The choice is yours. Small terminals Anyone considering a new terminal needs to be aware that you can start with a small terminal and expand it as the need arises. It can be much smaller than the ones shown herein. The terminal can have a relatively inexpensive unloading system for incoming asphalt delivered by tanker trucks. Unloading systems for delivery by rail and barge can be added later, depending on where the terminal is located. And of course, possible addition of storage tanks in the future should be always be considered in the early planning stages. Addition of a polymer blending system and/or an emulsion production system are also considerations for future expansion. Heatec has experience with all those options and can help plan for such expansions. 4 HEATEC EQUIPMENT Manufacturing equipment for heating and storing asphalt has always been an important part of our business. We design, build and service most products we offer. Our products are used extensively at hot mix asphalt plants, emulsion plants and asphalt terminals. Heaters Our oil-fired and gas-fired heaters use thermal fluid to heat storage tanks, heat exchangers, and steam generators. Their capacities range up to 30 million Btu/hour. They incorporate helical coils heated by hot gases from their burners. Thermal fluid is pumped through the helical coils and carries the heat to heating coils in the storage tanks, heat exchangers, etc. Thermal fluid is also an ideal source of heat for heat-traced asphalt piping. (Please see our separate brochures on thermal fluid heaters.) Booster heaters boost the temperature of asphalt above its normal storage temperature. They are fired-heaters, similar to our thermal fluid heaters, except that thermal fluid is not used. The asphalt itself is pumped through the hot helical coil to boost its temperature. Booster heaters range in capacity up to 8 million Btu/hour. Shell and tube heat exchangers We also make shell-and-tube heat exchangers that boost asphalt temperatures. They are not fired. They have tubes housed in a shell. Hot thermal fluid is pumped through the tubes to heat asphalt pumped through the surrounding shell. Steam generators Our steam generators provide heat for rail cars, eliminating the need for a fired-boiler. Their source of heat is heated thermal fluid. It circulates through tubes of the steam generator, heating water surrounding the tubes and converting it into steam. This has significant advantages over a fired boiler. Unlike a boiler, the heated tubes in the steam generator can never get hotter than the thermal fluid flowing through them. This eliminates the explosion hazards commonly associated with boilers. The life expectancy of steam generators is longer than for boilers. Storage tanks A wide variety of storage tanks are fabricated at the Heatec factory. They include tanks for asphalt, emulsions, additives, and fuel. Tanks for heated materials have heating coils and are insulated. Capacities of our factory made tanks range up to 50,000 gallons. We build our tanks to API specifications as an option. Tanks for polymer asphalts have mixers to keep blended materials from separating. Fuel tanks are built to UL 142 Standard and are available with built-in containment walls. (Please see our separate brochures on storage tanks.) We can also provide field-erected asphalt tanks. The table below shows nominal capacities for typical field erected tanks. Weight (tons) = Deg F. Heating coils We make heating coils in our factory for larger tanks that must be fabricated in the field. They are built to ASME code and CRN requirements as needed. Loading racks & scales Heatec can provide loading racks and truck scales. We can customize them to suit your requirements. Automated load-out controls We offer a tank truck load-out system designed so that drivers can safely load the tank truck they are driving without help from others. It can fill two trucks simultaneously with liquid asphalt products. The load-out system incorporates a computer, computer-automated controls, two truck scales, and automated data recording. The controls provide remote operation of the asphalt pumps located at the tanks. Load-out controls for each load-out boom incorporates lockouts to prevent operation of the pumps unless the boom is properly positioned and valves are properly set. Motor control system We can provide a control center that centralizes all electrical power for the terminal and for the motor controls. The controls are housed in a series of electrical racks and panels. Our motor control center is housed in a steel structure, enclosed with metal walls, ceiling and floor. It is Century asphalt terminal in Baytown, Texas. The terminal has rail, truck and barge unloading. Each large tank stores 54,000 bbl. The terminal also has a polymer blending system. Page 6 Page 7
5 designed to rest on a concrete foundation and remain separate from other buildings. It has HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning). Terminal controls We provide conventional PC computers set up to monitor and control terminal equipment. The controls include interlocks to minimize the possibility of operator error. A single monitor on a single computer can show a series of screens that display the status of the various terminal operations and components. For example, status of the load-out system can be shown on one screen. Levels and temperatures of storage tanks can be shown on another screen. The status of valves and pumps can be shown on another screen. Multiple monitors can be included to eliminate the need to switch between screens on a single monitor. Each monitor can display a different screen. Unloading systems for rail and barge We can provide an unloading system for rail cars and barges. The system for unloading rail cars is heated by steam provided by our steam generator. The unloading system for barges can be heated either by hot oil or by electrical trace heating. Polymer blending systems Heatec offers polymer blending systems with a wide variety of options. We can include the system in a new plant or retrofit one to an existing plant. (Please see our separate brochure on these systems.) A booster heat exchanger increases temperature of asphalt for loadout. Heating coils for large asphalt tanks are separated into independent circuits for greater versatility. The truck loading rack with truck scales enables truck drivers to fill their trucks and log their transactions. A steam generator heats rail cars for unloading. Heat for the generator is provided by the same thermal fluid circulating through the asphalt storage tanks. The pump skid contains centrifugal pumps that circulate thermal fluid from the heaters to storage tanks, etc. The thermal fluid expansion tank is also mounted on the skid. The motor control center centralizes all electrical power for the terminal and for motor controls. Fired heaters heat thermal fluid which heats the asphalt storage tanks, piping and steam generator. Factory built storage tanks store fuel, additives and PMAC. The warm oil skid blends some of the oil from the main supply line of the hot oil system with cooler oil. This lowers its temperature for pumps and asphalt piping heat-traced with hot oil. A computer is used for monitoring and controlling various operations and components. Extra monitors allow operators to view several screens without having to switch from one to another. Page 8 Page 9
6 Automated loadout controls enable drivers to safely load their own trucks. Unloading system for barges. Being able to get your asphalt delivered by barges has important advantages. Field erected asphalt piping is uncluttered. Asphalt pipes are traced with hot oil and are insulated.
