Replace all parts and panels before operating. Failure to do so can result in death or electrical shock. CUSTOMER COMPLAINT: Interior Moisture, frost and/or ice buildup CAUSE: Migration of moisture into the freezer and/or refrigerator compartments may create the following conditions: Frost or ice buildup in the air baffl e and/or return air duct Frost or ice buildup on the ceiling of the freezer compartment Frost or ice in the evaporator coil (incomplete defrost) Moisture under shelves or in pans To minimize or eliminate interior moisture and frost buildup while minimizing the number of changes being made, it is important to check below for the appropriate failure mode and make only the repairs that can impact that area: CORRECTION: General Corrections for All Internal Moisture Related Service Calls 1. Check that food packages or pans may be holding door partially open. 2. Check that food packages do not block the Return Air Vent Grille. 2 3. Check Door Gasket to Cabinet Flange for good seal. Gasket magnetic surface should have full face contact with Cabinet Flanges. Also, check that doors do not drag against the cavity liner when closing. Check and correct refrigerator level and door adjustment as necessary. 4. Check cabinet Corner Covers for air leaks and seal underneath if leaks are present. See Figure Check Mullion to Deck Rail Flange for gap. If gap is present, use silicone sealant to fill the gap. Seal the Inner Liner to the Deck Rail and up the vertical Cabinet Flanges and Mullion at least 6 with silicone sealant. Check for offset gap between Mullion and Cabinet Flange at top of door opening. Check for gap between Door Gasket and Million. Repair gaps with Spacer Kit # and seal according to kit instructions. See Figure Check evaporator fan motor operation. If the evaporator fan motor is not operating properly or the refrigerator has a slower running production fan motor, replace it with the current replacement motor The replacement is a high-speed motor. The slower running motors are listed below. The numbers can be found on the original motor or repair parts list. Cabinet Flange Replace these motors: Mullion Door Gasket Cabinet Flange and Mullion NOTE: Instruct customer that new motor will move more air, and may increase operating sound level slightly. 3 Specific Failure Modes Listed by Compartment Refrigerator Compartment (RC): RC1 Ice in the Air Baffl e RC2 Ice in the Air Return Duct RC3 Ice on the Meat Pan Duct RC4 Moisture on the Mullion Wall RC5 Moisture on RC Shelves or Food Items RC6 Moisture under the Crisper Pan RC7 Moisture under the Air Diffuser Cover or Grille RC8 Ice or Frost in the RC Air Scoop (Air Scoop is located in Freezer Compartment) RC9 Moisture near Door Gasket or Control Box RC10 - Moisture under Crisper Cover RC11 - Ice between Air Diffuser and Liner Freezer Compartment (FC): FC1 Incomplete Defrost FC2 Excessive Frost on Evaporator Cover FC3 Defrost Drain Frozen FC4 Frost or Ice on FC Ceiling or Ice Door FC5 Light Switch Frozen FC6 Frost on Bottom Door Dike FC7 Frost on FC Packages FC8 Frost near Door Gaskets FC9 Frost underneath In-Door Ice Bucket 4. Reinstall the Return Air Grille. 5. If refrigerator uses a manual baffl e and frost is also present in the Air Scoop, follow procedures in section RC8 - Ice or Frost in the RC Air Scoop (Air Scoop is located in upper FC). 6. If refrigerator uses a motorized baffl e, also check for incomplete defrost and follow procedures outlined in section FC1 - Incomplete Defrost. RC3 Ice on the Meat Pan Duct 1. Completely block meat pan duct from FC side with Air Duct Insert # Instruct customer that the meat pan temperature may be less cold than it was previously. RC4 Moisture on the Mullion Wall 1. If moisture forms a diagonal pattern on the RC or FC divider wall as shown in Figure 8, completely block duct supply inlet from FC side with Air Duct Insert # See Figure 9. Moisture Pattern Air Duct Insert Inlet Above Evaporator Refrigerator Compartment Failure Mode Repairs RC1 Ice in the Air Baffl e 1. Dry out air baffl e. 2. Install Air Scoop Heater # RC2 Ice in the Air Return Duct 1. Remove the Return Air Grille (See Figure 1). 2. Check for and remove frost or ice buildup in the return air duct. Warm water can be used to remove the ice. 3. (Old design only) Use Permagum or silicone sealant to seal the duct to the liner. Note: Figure 7 shows only the old design (plastic) return air duct. Figure 8 Figure 9 2. Instruct customer that the meat pan temperature may be less cold than it was previously. 3. If moisture does not follow the foamed-in air supply ducts, unblock RC air return by redistributing the food load. Instruct customer to not block air return with food packages. 4. If no blockage of air return was evident, check and replace evaporator fan motor according to guidelines in Step 8 of the General Corrections Section. Gap Figure 7 page 3 of 5

4 RC5 & RC6 Moisture on RC Shelves / Food Items or Under the Crisper Pan 1. Unblock RC air return and redistribute food load. Instruct customer to not block air return with food packages. 2. If no blockage of air return was evident, check and replace evaporator fan motor according to instructions in Step 8 of the General Corrections Section. Freezer Compartment Failure Mode Repairs FC1 & FC2 Incomplete Defrost / Excessive Frost on Evaporator Cover 1. Replace the evaporator drain tube in the unit compartment with the P trap drain tube # See Figure 11. RC7 Moisture under the Air Diffuser Cover or Grille 1. Remove moisture and dry the area. 2. Instruct customer that this is normal depending on the ambient humidity level and usage conditions. RC8 Ice or Frost in the RC Air Scoop (located in FC) 1. Install Air Scoop Heater # RC9 Moisture near Door Gasket or Control Box 1. No additional actions required beyond general sealing corrections already listed. RC10 Moisture under Crisper Cover 1. Dry out the crispers and adjust crisper control to the open position. 2. Instruct customer to use sealed storage for food items with high moisture content. Figure Replace the defrost bimetal with # Verify defrost bimetal is properly located. The bimetal should be clipped to the evaporator coil copper inlet transition tube and horizontally positioned directly above coil. See Figure 12. RC11 Ice between Air Diffuser and Liner 1. Remove air baffl e and, if present, remove frost or ice buildup in the air duct or baffl e area. See Figure 10. a. Check air baffl e to see that it opens and closes properly. If baffl e is motorized, run diagnostics mode to check operation. Replace if necessary. Order replacement by model number. b. When reinstalling the baffl e, make sure there is no air leakage around its seal. Use Permagum or silicone sealant to ensure a tight seal. Bimetal Location Figure 12 Permagum or Silicone Sealant 4. Install Kit # Follow the kit instructions for installing the foam seals to the evaporator area to maximize airflow through the evaporator. Figure 10 FC3 Defrost Drain Frozen 1. 5 FC4 FC8 - Frost or Ice on FC Ceiling or Ice Door, Light Switch Frozen / Frost on Bottom Door shelf / Frost on FC Packages / Frost near Door Gaskets No additional actions required beyond those listed in the General Corrections Section FC9 Frost underneath the In-Door Ice Bucket 1. Check and use Permagum or silicone to seal Wiring Harness Grommet in the top left of the ice and water dispenser housing. See Figure 13. If ice chute door hinge tab is broken, order kit # PARTS: If needed, order the following by part number.
