4 INFORMATION FOR THE AIR CONDITIONER WITH R40A REFRIGERANT This room air conditioner adopts an HFC refrigerant (R40A) which never destroys the ozone layer. Pay particular attention to the following points, though the basic installation procedure is same as that for R conditioners. As R40A has working pressure approximate.6 times as high as that of R, some special tools and piping parts/ materials are required. Refer to the table below. Take sufficient care not to allow water and other contaminations to enter the R40A refrigerant during storage and installation, since it is more susceptible to contaminations than R. For refrigerant piping, use clean, pressure-proof parts/materials specifically designed for R40A. (Refer to. Refrigerant piping.) 4 Composition change may occur in R40A since it is a mixed refrigerant. When charging, charge liquid refrigerant to prevent composition change. Raising position of the oil back hole enables to back the Since refrigerant and refrigerating oil are compatible each, refrigerating oil backs to the compressor through the lower position oil back hole. refrigerating oil of the upper layer to flow back to the compressor. Suction muffler Suction muffler Compressor Oil back hole Refrigerating oil Compressor Oil back hole Refrigerant Refrigerating oil /Refrigerant NOTE : The unit of pressure has been changed to MPa on the international system of units(si unit system). The conversion factor is: (MPa [Gauge]) =0.(kgf/f [Gauge]) 4

5 Conversion chart of refrigerant temperature and pressure (MPa [Gauge]) R40A Saturated liquid pressure R NOTE : The unit of pressure has been changed to MPa on the international system of units(si unit system). The conversion factor is: (MPa [Gauge]) =0.(kgf/f [Gauge]) (:).Tools dedicated for the air conditioner with R40A refrigerant The following tools are required for R40A refrigerant. Some R tools can be substituted for R40A tools. The diameter of the service port on the stop valve in outdoor unit has been changed to prevent any other refrigerant being charged into the unit. Cap size has been changed from 7/6 UNF with 0 threads to / UNF with 0 threads. R40A tools Can R tools be used? Description R40A has high pressures beyond the measurement range of existing Gauge manifold No gauges. Port diameters have been changed to prevent any other refrigerant from being charged into the unit. Charge hose Gas leak detector No No Hose material and cap size have been changed to improve the pressure resistance. Dedicated for HFC refrigerant. Torque wrench Yes 6.5 mm and 9.5 mm No.7 mm and 5.88 mm Flare tool Flare gauge Yes New Clamp bar hole has been enlarged to reinforce the spring strength in the tool. Provided for flaring work (to be used with R flare tool). Vacuum pump Provided to prevent the back flow of oil. This adapter enables you to use New adapter vacuum pumps. Electronic scale for It is difficult to measure R40A with a charging cylinder because the New refrigerant charging refrigerant bubbles due to high pressure and high-speed vaporization No : Not Substitutable for R40A Yes : Substitutable for R40A.Refrigerant piping Specifications Use the refrigerant pipes that meet the following specifications. Pipe For liquid For gas Outside diameter mm 6.5/ Wall thickness 0.8 mm/0.8 mm 0.8 mm 0.8 mm.0 mm Insulation material Heat resisting foam plastic Specific gravity Thickness 8 mm Use a copper pipe or a copper-alloy seamless pipe with a thickness of 0.8 mm. Never use any pipe with a thickness less than 0.8mm, as the pressure resistance is insufficient. 5

6 Flaring work and flare nut Flaring work for R40A pipe differs from that for R pipe. For details of flaring work, refer to Installation manual FLARING WORK. Pipe diameter mm Dimension of flare nut R40A R Refrigerant oil Apply the special refrigeration oil (accessories: packed with indoor unit) to the flare and the union seat surfaces. 4.Air purge Do not discharge the refrigerant into the atmosphere. Take care not to discharge refrigerant into the atmosphere during installation, reinstallation, or repairs to the refrigerant circuit. Use the vacuum pump for air purging for the purpose of environmental protection. 5.Additional charge For additional charging, charge the refrigerant from liquid phase of the gas cylinder. If the refrigerant is charged from the gas phase, composition change may occur in the refrigerant inside the cylinder and the outdoor unit. In this case, ability of the refrigerating cycle decreases or normal operation can be impossible. However, charging the liquid refrigerant all at once may cause the compressor to be locked. Thus, charge the refrigerant slowly. 65 Fan motor does not operate or stops operating shortly after starting the operation. G Check of outdoor fan motor MXZ-A8WV Start Check the connection of connector CN85 in the fan motor relay connector and outdoor electronic control P. C. board at the noise filter P. C. board and connector CN90 in the noise filter board. Disconnect the fan motor connector, and measure the resistance of the fan motor winding to check the winding characteristic. Normal Abnormal Replace the fan motor.. Disconnect the lead wire leading to the compressor. minutes after turning on the power supply, start EMERGENCY OPERATION.. Check the voltage between pin and pin 4, pin and pin 5 at the fan motor connector. Is there voltage of 0V AC? No Yes. Turn off power supply of the indoor and outdoor unit, and disconnect the connector (CN85).. Is the voltage 0V, when the voltage between CN85 pin (+), pin7 (-), pin6 (-) are measured after the power supply is turned on the outdoor unit? Yes minutes after turning on the power supply, start EMERGENCY OPERATION. Is there voltage of V DC between CN85 pin (+) and pin6 (-)? Yes Replace the noise filter P. C. board. No No Replace the oudtoor electronic control P. C. board. MXZ-A6/AWV Start Check the connection between the connector CN9 and CN9. Is the resistance between each terminal of outdoor fan motor normal? Yes Disconnect CN9 from outdoor electronic control P.C. board, and turn on the power supply. Rotate the outdoor fan motor manually and measure the voltage of CN9. Between (+) and 5(-) Between (+) and 5(-) Between (+) and 5(-) No (Fixed to either 5V or 0V DC) No Replace the outdoor DC fan motor. Does the voltage between each terminal become 5V DC and 0V DC repeatedly? Yes Does the outdoor fan motor rotates smoothly? Yes Replace the outdoor electronic control P.C. board. 65

66 When the operation frequency does not go up from lowest frequency. H Check of HPS MXZ-A6/AWV Start. Disconnect the connector CN68 in the electronic control P. C. board.. Check the resistance of HPS after minutes have passed since the outdoor unit power supply was turnd off. Check the resistance between each terminal. 0" Infinity Replace HPS. Reconnect CN68 to former. Turn on power supply to the indoor and outdoor unit. minutes lator, starts EMERGENCY OPERATION. Yes Is HPS protection displayed immediately after compressor starts? Yes Normal No Replace the electronic control P. C. board. I The other cases MXZ-A6/AWV In the case that the indoor fan and outdoor fan operate but the compressor does not operate, it causes that the high pressure switch can be operated once. First of all, check the high pressure switch can be shorted, turn OFF the power and turn ON again minute later. MXZ-A8/A6/AWV Indoor unit dose not operate. (different operating models in multisystem) When you try to run two indoor unit simultaneously, one for cooling and the other for heating, the unit which transmits signal to the outdoor units earlier decides the operation mode. The other unit indicates as shown in the figure below. When the above situation occurs, set all the indoor units to the same mode, turn OFF the indoor units, and then turn them back ON. Though the top of the indoor unit sometimes gets warm, this does not mean malfunction. The reason is that the refrigerant gas continuously flows into the indoor unit even while it is not operating.
