3 1.0 Welcome Thank you for choosing this quality Clipsal product. This manual is intended to help you install this product in a way that ensures the safety of yourself and others. Whilst this Clipsal product is designed to be installed easily, we highly recommend you take the time to read this manual thoroughly before commencing installation. When installed correctly and serviced regularly, this product will provide hassle free operation for many years. 2.0 Safety Warnings THIS PRODUCT MUST ONLY BE INSTALLED BY A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN. BEFORE COMMENCING INSTALLATION TURN OFF AND ISOLATE THE ELECTRICAL SUPPLY. AS THE INSTALLER, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO ENSURE YOU COMPLY WITH ALL RELEVANT BUILDING AND SAFETY CODES (FOR EXAMPLE AS/NZS3000, AS/NZS2293). REFER TO THE APPLICABLE STANDARDS FOR THE RELEVANT RULES. Do not touch the terminal block or circuitry when the fitting is energised. The only user serviceable parts are the lamp and the battery pack. Do not attempt to service other parts of the fitting as this will void the warranty. When installation is complete, please leave this manual with the building s owner/s for future reference. 3 of 8

4 3.0 Installation Instructions The QUICKSMART exit light may be installed as either a ceiling or wall mounted fitting. The light s detachable, easy-connect mounting bracket makes installation easy. To install the QUICKSMART exit light, please follow the steps below: 1. Remove the QUICKSMART exit light from its box and inspect it for any damage or imperfections. If you believe the product to be damaged, or otherwise unsound, DO NOT install the fitting. Pack it back in its box, and return it to the place of purchase for replacement. 2. If the product is satisfactory, proceed with the installation. Remove the easy-connect mounting bracket from the body of the QUICKSMART exit light. 3. If wall mounting the QUICKSMART exit light, drill two holes (between 4-6mm in diameter), in the U shaped niches in the rear of the easy-connect mounting bracket, and cut out the cable access hole also (accessible behind supply cover). 4. Mark four holes in the ceiling for ceiling mounting, or two holes in the wall for wall mounting, then install the easy-connect mounting bracket using the appropriate fasteners (not included). See Figure Strip and connect the mains cable as shown in Figure 2, using a screwdriver. Secure the mains cable with the tape. Please note: The un-switched Active wire connects to the terminal marked A. The Neutral wire connects to the terminal marked N. The Earth wire connects to the terminal marked. Check that the stripped wire ends are completely inserted into the terminal block and no bare conductors are exposed. With multi-strand conductors, ensure that all of the strands are twisted together before inserting them into the terminal block. You must also protect the mains cable with a grommet, gland or bush where it passes through the cable entry hole. 6. Install the desired decals onto the diffuser(s) ensuring that the top and bottom of the decal(s) have been inserted into the groove found on the diffuser. 7. Remove the locking screw and rubber cover (found in the mounting bracket) and slide the body of the QUICKSMART exit light onto the rails of the bracket. Note: Before fitting the body to the mounting bracket, ensure the LED lamp is correctly installed. Push the body into position until it fits snugly and use the locking screw to ensure the body of the QUICKSMART exit light is secured to the mounting bracket. Use the rubber cover to fill the screw hole. 4 of 8

5 8. Connect the QUICKSMART exit light to the mains and check the operation of the fitting to ensure that the installation was successful. When powered up, allow a few minutes to give the battery a small charge, then press the manual test button located on the side of the fitting. When the test button is held down for a few seconds, the exit lamp should light up and stay ON until the test button is released. If the lamp lights, but does not stay on until the test button is released, this means the connections are correct, and the battery requires at least 24 hours to fully charge. If the lamp does not light at all, check the supply, the connections, and then the problem solving procedure on the back page of this manual. When disconnected from the mains supply, the exit light is powered by a battery operated inverter. Due to this, care should be taken when replacing either the battery or lamp. 5 of 8

6 5.0 Replacing the Lamp 1. Use only the lamp recommended on the label inside your QUICKSMART exit light. 2. Remove the body from the mounting bracket by removing the locking screw and sliding the body of the QUICKSMART exit light away from the bracket. 3. Remove the diffuser to access the lamp by using a screwdriver at the release points marked on the base of the diffuser. 4. To remove the lamp, grasp both ends firmly, and rotate the lamp 90 degrees. 5. To replace the lamp, ensure that the holder slots are horizontal, then grasp both ends firmly, insert the lamp, and rotate 90 degrees. 6. Replace the diffuser and refit the body to the mounting bracket. 6.0 Replacing the Battery 1. Use only the battery recommended on the label inside your QUICKSMART exit light. 2. Remove the body from the mounting bracket by removing the locking screw and sliding the body of the QUICKSMART exit light away from the bracket. Remove the diffuser to access the battery by using a screwdriver at the release points marked on the base of the diffuser. 3. Remove the ties holding the battery in place, unplug the lead and remove the old battery, which should be disposed of correctly, according to the law. 4. Insert the new battery into its holder and connect its plug. 5. Secure the battery in place using appropriate cable ties. 6. Replace the diffuser and refit the body to the mounting bracket. 7.0 Removal Instructions Before removing a previously installed QUICKSMART exit light, switch off the mains supply to the fitting. Following this, remove the body of the light, then unscrew the un-switched Active, Neutral and Earth cable connections from the terminal block, and then unscrew the mounting screws from the bracket. When you eventually reconnect the exit light to the power supply, it will need time to recharge its battery before it s capable of being used. 8.0 Testing Precautions When the exit light is permanently connected to the mains supply you will need to allow 24 hours to charge its battery. Once the battery is fully charged you will need to conduct a manual discharge test as per the requirements of AS/NZS of 8

7 At the time of printing, the standard requires that new fittings operate in emergency mode for at least two hours for their first test. Further tests are required every six months. It is important that you keep records of the initial test, and ongoing tests, in the building s emergency service logbook. If the fitting is not to be permanently connected to the mains supply at the time of installation, you must give it the mandatory two hour test when you connect it permanently to the mains supply. 9.0 Construction Sites IMPORTANT NOTE: Continuously switching the power supply to the fitting on and off, during or after the installation process (due to other processes being conducted on the building site) could cause the fitting to discharge and charge its batteries many times over a short period, which can impact negatively on the batteries life. Clipsal does not recommend that you connect the QUICKSMART exit light to the power supply if such conditions are prevalent. If you choose to expose the QUICKSMART exit light to these harsh operating conditions, Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd may not honour any warranty on the life of the batteries or of the lamp. The QUICKSMART exit light is designed to undergo regular discharge tests but it is recommended that the intervals between consecutive tests are not less than two weeks. Frequent testing of the exit light will reduce the service life of the battery. In order to prevent damage to the battery, leave the un-switched Active circuit turned off at the circuit breaker until such time as emergency lighting is required on the site Problem Solving Procedures If you have installed and connected the QUICKSMART exit light as per the instructions contained within this manual and the light fails to work properly, please use the following table as a guide to fixing the problem before calling our office. Fault Red LED is not lit. RED LED is lit, but the lamp does not light when the test switch is pressed. Lamp lights, but only temporarily when test switch is pressed or when the main power supply is turned off. Possible Causes a.c. supply is not connected a.c. supply turned off Battery not connected or faulty battery pack. Lamp is damaged Lamp is not inserted correctly Battery pack is damaged. The benefits conferred herein are in addition to, and in no way shall be deemed to derogate; either expressly or by implication, any or all other rights and remedies in respect to the Clipsal product, which the consumer has under the Commonwealth Trade Practices Act or any other similar State or Territory Laws. 2. The warrantor is Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd. With registered offices in all Australian States. 3. This Clipsal product is guaranteed against faulty workmanship and materials for a period of one (1) year from the date of installation. 4. Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd reserves the right, at its discretion, to either repair free of parts and labour charges, replace or offer refund in respect to any article found to be faulty due to materials, parts or workmanship. 5. This warranty is expressly subject to the Clipsal product being installed, wired, tested, operated and used in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. 6. All costs of a claim shall be met by Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd, however should the product that is the subject of the claim be found to be in good working order, all such costs shall be met by the claimant. 7. When making a claim the consumer shall forward the Clipsal product to the nearest office of Clipsal Australia Pty Ltd with adequate particulars of the defect within 28 days of the fault occurring. The product should be returned securely packed, complete with details of the date and place of purchase, description of load, and circumstances of malfunction.
