3 Type J Series Incremental Conditioner True Year-Round Air Conditioning The McQuay Type J Series Incremental conditioner is designed and built for either through-the-wall or overthe-sill installations. These units have their outdoor air connections at the top in order to clear beams or other obstructions within a wall. It can also be used where the ground floor is slightly below grade. Application The McQuay Type J Series conditioner was designed to provide complete four-season air conditioning both heating and cooling for either existing or projected multi-room buildings such as apartment houses, hospitals, hotel and motel guests rooms, office buildings and related applications. This attractive air conditioner is designed to be installed free-standing, and usually occupies less space than the radiator it replaces. The hydronic version uses steam vapor or circulating hot water for heating, electricity for cooling. The electric version uses electricity for both heating and cooling. The McQuay Type J Series is intended to be used in multiples as the key component of Incremental air conditioning for multi-room buildings. It gives each tenant complete, personal control over the room environment. Function The McQuay Type J Series provides all six major benefits of true year-round air conditioning: air circulation for that fresh feeling. controlled ventilation with doors and windows closed. air cleansing for better health. cleaner rooms and less work. automatic warmth when it s cool. automatic cooling and removal of excessive humidity when it s warm with the choice of either heating or cooling at any time. 4 Design Features Chassis The concept of individualized room conditioning began many years ago with the Type J conditioner. Over the years this design has become the benchmark for quality and reliability. Continual research and product improvement has allowed McQuay to remain the leader in the sectionalized unit market. Recent design changes have further enhanced the efficiency and durability of this unit. Many important features have been developed. Those features relevant to this design change are listed below. Figure 2. Cooling Chassis Compressor The power plant for the Type J is a high efficiency rotary compressor. It has a proven track record of efficiency and reliability for low cost and continuous service over many years. In addition to its high efficiency, the compressor includes thermal overload protection and is precision balanced for quiet operation. Figure 3. Compressor Heat Transfer Surface An advanced coil design is employed in all Type J units. The copper tubes have an internal rifled surface to increase the heat transfer capabilities of the refrigerant. Aluminum fins are mechanically bonded to the copper tubes for positive heat transfer. The fins are lanced to increase the air turbulence making the coil extremely efficient. The design of the plug-in device connections allows for quick and easy power disconnection without the use of tools. A convenient amp connector is used to transfer power to the cooling chassis from the control box. The amp connector eliminates hardwired connections that hinder chassis removal for scheduled maintenance. All unit sizes utilize the same amp connector to facilitate interchangeability of spare chassis. High Efficiency Condensing Section The outdoor condenser section uses a reliable PSC motor to drive an efficient centrifugal fan. Besides being quiet, the centrifugal fan is used to dispose of unwanted condensate generated during the cooling cycle, which is then transferred to the outdoor side where it is picked up by the outdoor fan. This condensate is then thrown against the hot outdoor coil where it is dissipated to the outside as vapor. In addition to disposing of condensate without drip, splash, or spray, this re-evaporation helps improve the unit s efficiency by lowering the condenser temperature and improving heat transfer. Outside Air Damper Control A motorized outside air damper is standard on all Type J equipment. A toggle switch is located on the cooling chassis to provide control of the damper. The damper can be set to either of two positions automatic or closed. In the automatic position, the damper will open whenever the indoor fan is energized, except during night setback when it remains closed. In the closed position, the damper will remain closed at all times. The toggle switch is concealed behind the front panel to help prevent unauthorized tampering. Controls The brains to operate the Type J unit are in the control box. The control box is an integral part of the front panel and has a plug-in harness for quick connection to the cooling chassis. The control box is factory overlaid with a tough, polycarbonate membrane to preserve its appearance for many years (see Figure 4). Color coded pushbuttons and large, raised function indicators improve readability for the visually impaired. Figure 4. Control Overlay Heavy-Duty Construction The Type J cooling chassis is constructed of heavygauge steel. It is insulated with a waterproof material to prevent sweating. The dense insulation, combined with heavy-gauge steel, results in low sound levels. Catalog 1330 / Page 4 of 16 (10-07)

5 Base Heat Section The base heat section for the Type J Series units performs multiple functions. It houses three variations of heating coil steam, hot water, or electric resistance. In addition to housing these three types of coils, the base heat section also serves as the wall sleeve. The base heat section contains the indoor fans and filter so it is possible to install the Type J as a heating only unit for future cooling. This option is especially attractive where heat is needed immediately, but cooling isn t required until a later phase of construction or until the space is rented. Units required as heating only are supplied with an insulated weather panel in the space that the cooling chassis normally occupies. When cooling becomes necessary, the weather panel is quickly removed and a self-contained cooling chassis is slid into the space. Other features of the base heat section are listed below. Wall Boxes The Type J Series unit has an unusual wall box profile. The wall opening location is at the top of the wall box to accommodate piping or other structural interference at the base of the wall. These units were originally designed to supplement or replace base-board radiant heat. It was often impractical to re-route piping to accommodate a floor level wall opening. Older building methods containing floor level I-beam construction also make floor level wall openings impractical. The Type J Series unit provides over 12 of clearance to adapt to these situations. No other unit in the industry provides this type of flexibility. The wall box is coated with a very tough, oven baked powder paint to resist corrosion. The standard color is Antique Ivory that is formulated to blend with any decor. Figure 6. Type J Wall Box Quiet Operation Large forward curved fans are used on the indoor side to provide efficient comfort conditioning with low sound levels. The blow-through design and heavy-gauge sheet metal provide a high degree of attenuation for quiet operation. High Efficiency Motors High efficiency, low sound producing PSC motors are utilized in Type J units. All motors employ extended lube lines for periodic lubrication during scheduled maintenance. Factory Installed Valve Hot water and steam heat sections are furnished with a factory installed valve. Normally open line voltage valves are supplied for hot water coils and normally closed line voltage valves are supplied on steam coils. Figure 5. Base Heat Section Front Panel The J Series units utilize a sloped front panel that is both functional and attractive. Unlike units with top discharge, the slope directs the air away from the curtain to provide increased air distribution. The 45 angle slope also discourages tenants from placing objects on the discharge that could cause operational problems. The sloped design of the Type J front panel adds to the comfort level in the room by eliminating discharge air drafts often associated with front discharge designs. The 45 angle provides a divergent air pattern with adequate throw to supply excellent air circulation in the conditioned space. Figure 7. Front Panel Catalog 1330 / Page 5 of 16 (10-07)

6 IAQ Features Innovative air quality features have been designed into the Type J Series units. In addition to the permanent, viscous coated, aluminum mesh filter, three other filtration options are offered. For applications such as nursing homes, child care centers, hospitals, etc., where ammonia based odors are present, a Zeolite filter is available that is very effective in this environment. For rooms with odors such as cigarette smoke, cooking odors, disinfectants or organic odors like mold and mildew, a charcoal filter with 150% activated carbon is effective. The third optional filter is a washable electrostatic type that is particularly effective in areas where higher than normal dust is present. The electrostatic filter is made of two layers of heavy vinyl mesh that traps dust in a chamber where it is held until it can be rinsed away during scheduled maintenance. The Type J Series unit is also supplied with a sloped drain pan to remove condensate generated during cooling to the outdoor section for proper disposal. By removing stagnant water at the indoor drain pan, the potential risk of microbial growth is diminished. Figure 8. Optional Filters Outdoor Louvers Two styles of exterior louvers are available for Type J Series units. The standard louver is a one-piece, stamped aluminum type that is finished natural. This louver is available as shown in Figure 9 or in a flanged version. Attractive, rugged architectural louvers (Figure 10) are also available as a standard option for all Type J Series conditioners. Architectural louvers are extruded aluminum and are finished natural. Figure 9. Standard Stamped Louver Louvers by others are acceptable as long as they meet factory specifications. They must have a minimum free area of % or a pressure drop not exceeding.05 in. w.g. at 300 fpm face velocity, and a blade design that will not cause recirculation of condenser air. Free area is defined by ASHRAE as the minimum area of the openings in an air inlet or outlet through which air can pass. Application of special louvers or building facade treatments that may affect normal operation of the unit, or restrict free air discharge of condenser airflow, should be referred to McQuay for evaluation. A louver design that restricts the passage of condenser air or causes condenser air to be recirculated will dramatically alter the performance of the unit. Unit capacity and efficiency may be decreased and fan motor and compressor life may be shortened. If the louver does not meet the above outlined requirements, or is only marginally acceptable, a drawing should be sent to McQuay for evaluation. If acceptance still cannot be determined by the drawing, then a sample of the proposed louver should be sent to McQuay for testing and certification. The sample sent for testing must be at least '' high by '' wide. Typical Louver Design The illustrations below show some typical louver designs. The X dimension represents the narrowest dimension through which air must pass. The Y dimension represents the increment of rise between the blades. To calculate the percentage of free area, divide dimension X by dimension Y. Figure 11. Louver Designs Sample Calculation: X Free Area % = x 100 Y Figure 10. 9 Application Considerations The wall opening for the Type J unit is 12 1 / 2 above the floor level to accommodate piping or other obstructions that are present. For existing buildings, a hole must be cut in the wall for the condenser section to protrude outdoors. If this is impractical, the Type J outdoor section can protrude through a window. Depending on the window sill height, the unit may have to be mounted several inches above the floor. There are two ways to install the unit either recessed or nonrecessed. Figure 15 illustrates a typical nonrecessed unit with only the rear extension projecting into the wall. Figures 16 and 17 show variations in the amount of recess with Figure 17 depicting the maximum recess depth. The rough-in dimensions for the Type J also vary for recessed and nonrecessed installations. Figure 14 shows the rough-in dimensions for a nonrecessed unit and the rough-in dimensions for recessed units. Note: It is not required to install the unit above the floor line. However, if a kick space is desired, the unit can be installed above the floor as needed. Rough Opening Dimensions Figure 14. Nonrecessed Recessed Figure 15. Figure 16. 11 Heating Capacities at Nonstandard Conditions The hydronic coil can be used with either hot water or steam. To determine the correction factor at nonstandard conditions using hot water, use Figure 18. Follow the known flow rate to the corresponding EWT curve and read to the left to determine the heating correction factor. Apply this percentage to the standard ratings shown on page 9 (Performance Data). Figure 18. Hot Water Heating Correction Factor Curve For conditions at temperatures other than 65 F, determine the correction factor using Figure 19. From a known entering air temperature, follow up to the line and then go left to determine the correct percentage. Apply this percentage to Figure 18 (when using hot water) before plotting the heating correction factor. Figure 19. Heating Capacity Correction Factor Curve To determine the water pressure drop (WPD) at nonstandard flow rates, enter known GPM on Figure 21. Follow to conditioner line and read left for appropriate WPD. To find the WPD of the valve, repeat procedure. Add the WPD of the valve and the WPD of the conditioner to get the total. For ratings at nonstandard conditions using steam, refer to Figure 20. Follow the known steam pressure to the curve corresponding to the known entering air temperature. Read down to determine the correction factor. Multiply this number by the standard rating found on page 9 (Performance Data), to determine the rating at nonstandard conditions. Figure 21. 15 Energy Saving Options Guest Room Control (GRC) This additional control, widely used by hotel/motel operations, can be provided for use on Type J equipment. GRC allows the owner to substantially reduce energy consumption by de-energizing the equipment in unoccupied spaces. The Incremental units are wired to a central location, usually the front desk, where they are controlled by a toggle switch in a control panel (supplied by others). The units remain de-energized until the room becomes occupied, at which time the clerk can energize the equipment from the front desk (see Figure 22). Night Setback Control (NSB) Additional savings can be achieved through use of the night setback control (NSB). NSB incorporates an additional unit mounted thermostat to maintain a minimum, predetermined room temperature. The temperature is set at the factory to 55 F. This setpoint is adjustable by the owner to activate anywhere between 45 F and 55 F. If the room temperature drops below the owner selected minimum temperature, the heat cycle and indoor fan are energized until the night setback thermostat is satisfied. NSB overrides the unit control even if it is placed in the stop position or inadvertently left in the cool position. Figure 22. Guest Room Control Switch #1 Switch #2 Switch #3 Occ. Unocc. Occ. Unocc. Occ. Unocc. Central control panel (by others) Low voltage transformer (by others) Conditioner #1 Conditioner #2 Conditioner #3 Relay Outdoor Air Dampers Type J units are furnished with an automatic outdoor air damper as standard. The automatic damper is wired in parallel to the indoor fan relay. The automatic damper feature can be overridden by placing the automatic damper switch in the off position. In this position, the damper remains closed during all cycles of the unit. The outdoor air damper is also overridden during NSB if the unit is so equipped. This prevents cold air from entering the occupied space when the unit is simply bringing the room back to the night setback temperature. Since NSB is used when the room is unoccupied, there is no reason to introduce outside air during this cycle.
