3 Introduction Heavy Duty Construction for Durability and Quiet Operation The Type K Incremental Room Conditioner was first introduced in 1958 under the Remington brand name, and many of the original units are still in operation today. The Incremental system was the first through-the-wall, self-contained heating and air conditioning system. It is designed to provide ondemand, zoned comfort control for multi-roomed buildings such as hotels, motels, hospitals, nursing homes, apartments, dormitories and offices. Today, Daikin Type K Incremental Room Conditioners continue to set the industry standard for quality. Heavy duty construction, premium engineering, carefully selected components and the highest manufacturing standards assure a quality product. Daikin has a policy of continuous product research and improvement. The Type K unit combines the latest available technology with the long-standing quality features that has made the Type K unit famous. 5 Design Features Chassis The concept of individualized room conditioning began many years ago with the Type K conditioner. Over the years this design has become the benchmark for quality and reliability. Continual research and product improvement has allowed Daikin to remain the leader in the sectionalized unit market. Recent design changes have further enhanced the efficiency and durability of the Type K chassis. Many important features have been developed. Those features relevant to this design change are listed below. Figure 1: Chassis Compressor The power plant for the Type K is a high efficiency rotary compressor. It has a proven track record of efficiency and reliability to insure low cost, and continuous service for many years. In addition to its high efficiency, this compressor is protected against thermal overload and is precision balanced for quiet operation. Figure 2: Compressor Heavy-Duty Construction The Type K cooling chassis is constructed of heavy-gauge steel for unsurpassed durability. It is insulated with a waterproof material to prevent sweating. The dense insulation, combined with heavy-gauge steel, results in a unit with very low sound levels. The design of the plug-in device connections allows for quick and easy power disconnection without the use of tools. A convenient amp connector is used to transfer power to the cooling chassis from the control box. The amp connector eliminates hard-wired connections that hinder chassis removal for scheduled maintenance. All unit sizes utilize the same amp connector to facilitate interchangeability of spare chassis. High Efficiency Condensing Section The outdoor condenser section uses a reliable PSC motor to drive an efficient centrifugal fan. Besides being quiet, the centrifugal fan is used to dispose of unwanted condensate generated during the cooling cycle. Condensate draining from the evaporator coil is atomized and entrained by the condenser blower airstream, re-evaporated on the hot condenser coil where it escapes to the outside as vapor. No slinger rings are used and the condensate never comes in contact with the outdoor blower wheel(s). Re-evaporation also lowers condenser temperature and pressure to increase overall cooling efficiency. Figure 3: Condensate Disposal Heat Transfer Surface An advanced coil design is employed in all Type K units. The copper tubes have an internal rifled surface to increase the heat transfer capabilities of the refrigerant. Aluminum fins are mechanically bonded to the copper tubes to insure positive heat transfer. The fins are lanced to increase the air turbulence making the coil extremely efficient. Outside Air Damper Control A motorized outside air damper is standard on all Type K equipment. A toggle switch is located on the cooling chassis to provide control of the damper. The damper can be set to either of two positions: automatic or closed. In the automatic position, the damper will open whenever the indoor fan is energized, except during night setback when it remains closed. In the closed position, the damper will remain closed at all times. The toggle switch is concealed behind the front panel to prevent unauthorized tampering. Catalog Page 5 of 28

6 Design Features Controls The brains to operate the Type K unit are in the control box. The control box is a separate component that is shipped with the heat section. A plug-in harness is provided for quick connection to the cooling chassis and a receptacle for connection to the heat section. The control box is factory overlaid with a tough, polycarbonate membrane to preserve its appearance for many years. See Figure 4. Color-coded push buttons and large, raised function indicators improve readability for the visually impaired. Figure 4: Control Overlay Constant/Cycle Fan Switch A constant/cycle fan switch is provided in the Type K unit, allowing the fan to run continuously or cycle with the thermostat. This switch is located on the control box and is concealed behind the front panel to prevent unauthorized tampering. When the switch is placed in the cycle mode, the indoor fan will energize when there is a call for heating, cooling, or fan. Placed in the constant mode, the fan will run continuously. Constant fan offers better air circulation and improved fan filtration compared with the cycle option. Figure 5: Long Control Box Individual Room Conditioning The concept of individualized room conditioning began many years ago with the Type K conditioner. Fan Option A fan only function is provided to enable fan operation for improved circulation and increased air filtration. The dual speed fan is controlled by a unit mounted fan speed rocker switch for user convenience. Remote Control The Type K unit can be connected to a wall thermostat for remote control operation. A variety of thermostats are compatible with this unit including many programmable varieties. Multiple Unit Control Large conference rooms and hallways can be conditioned by many units using a single thermostat. One unit is designated as a control unit and up to seven units can be connected to the control unit for synchronized operation. Any unit can be designated as the control unit with only minor field wiring modifications to make the other units into the controlled units. Heat Section There are three types of heat sections available for the Type K units: hot water, steam, and electric resistance. Like the cooling chassis, these sections are built to last. There are many unique features of the Type K heating section that have contributed to its popularity. The heat section is independent of the cooling chassis. Unique features of the Type K heat section are listed below. Quiet Operation Large forward curved fans are used on the indoor side to provide efficient comfort conditioning with low sound levels. The blow-through design and heavy-gauge sheet metal provide a high degree of attenuation not found in draw-through designs. High Efficiency Motors High efficiency, low sound producing PSC motors are utilized by Type K units. All motors employ extended lube lines for periodic lubrication during scheduled maintenance. 7 Design Features Factory Installed Valve Hot water and steam heat sections are furnished with a factory installed valve. Normally open, 2-way line voltage valves are supplied for hot water coils and normally closed 2-way line voltage valves are supplied on steam valves. Figure 6: Short Control Box (sizes shown) The discharge grille of the room cabinet is equipped with individual four-way adjustable steel grilles. This feature allows the owner to force the air in various directions to prevent stagnation. An extruded aluminum discharge grille is optional. This grille is available to further enhance the unit's appearance. The Type K room cabinet is factory furnished in a variety of depths to accommodate every wall thickness. The entire cabinet is powder coated with an epoxy Antique Ivory finish and comes complete with a handsome Oxford Brown reveal around the perimeter for accent. Figure 9: Cabinet Figure 7: Electric Heat Section Figure 10: Extruded Aluminum Discharge Grilles Figure 8: Hydronic Heat Section Filtration The filter is a permanent, cleanable wire mesh filter that is designed to provide superior dust collecting abilities. Room Cabinets The room cabinet is designed to complement any room decor. The heavy-gauge steel is coated with an attractive appliance grade powder paint which is then oven baked for durability. An adjustable kickplate is provided to accommodate various wall opening locations. The standard adjustment is +/-1". The room cabinet is designed to completely encompass the unit and conceal any piping or electrical connections from the room occupant. The front panel is removable for service access of filters, valves or electrical connections. Hidden latches are supplied to prevent unauthorized personnel from opening the front panel. 8 Design Features Wall Boxes The Type K wall box is made from heavy-gauge steel and coated with a tough epoxy powdered paint for corrosion protection. The wall box is designed to be placed into the wall during construction to assure a snug fit. The standard wall box can accommodate a wall depth of 13⅝'' without modifications. It can be easily adapted to deeper walls with minor factory modifications. Wall box/ sleeve extensions are available for field installation through your Daikin sales representative. The dimensions of the wall box have not changed since the unit was originally designed in Therefore, if the existing wall box is in good condition, the old chassis or heat section can be easily replaced without additional wall modifications. Consequently, the unit can be replaced to provide high efficiency operation with minimal disruption or downtime. Figure 11: Wall Box - Inside Figure 12: Wall Box - Outside View with Louver Louvers by others are acceptable as long as they meet factory specifications. They must have a minimum free area of % or a pressure drop not exceeding 0.05 in. w.g. at 300 fpm face velocity, and a blade design that will not cause recirculation of condenser air. Free area is defined by ASHRAE as the minimum area of the openings in an air inlet or outlet through which air can pass. Application of special louvers or building facade treatment that may affect normal operation of the unit, or restrict free air discharge of condenser airflow, should be referred to the Application Engineering Department for evaluation. A louver design that restricts the passage of condenser air or causes condenser air to be recirculated will dramatically alter the performance of the unit. Unit capacity and efficiency may be decreased and fan motor and compressor life may be shortened. If the louver does not meet the above outlined requirements or is only marginally acceptable, a drawing should be sent to the Incremental Application Engineering Department for evaluation. If acceptance still cannot be determined by the drawing, then a sample of the proposed louver should be sent to Daikin for testing and certification. The sample sent for testing must match the wall opening for the unit selected. Typical Louver Design Figure 15 shows some typical louver designs. The X dimension represents the narrowest dimension through which air must pass. The Y dimension represents the increment of rise between the blades. To calculate the percentages of free area, divide dimension X by dimension Y. Figure 14: Sample Calculation X Free Area % = Y x 100 Where: X = Y = Free Area % = 1.50 x 100 = 75% Figure 15: Louver Designs Outdoor Louvers The standard louver is a one-piece, extruded architectural aluminum type with a natural finish. 12 Engineering Data Heating Capacities at Nonstandard Conditions The hydronic coil can be used with either hot water or steam. To determine the correction factor at nonstandard conditions using hot water, use Figure 16. Follow the known flow rate to the corresponding EWT curve and read to the left to determine the heating correction factor. Apply this percentage to the standard ratings shown on page 9. Figure 16: Hot Water Heating Correction Factor Curve For conditions at temperatures other than 65ºF, determine the correction factor using Figure 18. From a known entering air temperature, follow up to the line and then go left to determine the correct percentage. Apply this percentage to Figure 16 (when using hot water) before plotting the heating correction factor. Figure 18: Heating Capacity Correction Factor Curve To determine the water pressure drop (WPD) at nonstandard flow rates, enter known gpm on Figure 19. Follow to conditioner line and read left for appropriate WPD. To find the WPD of the valve, repeat procedure. Add the WPD of the valve and the WPD of the conditioner to get the total. Figure 19: Water Pressure Drop Curve For ratings at nonstandard conditions using steam, refer to Figure 17. Follow the known steam pressure to the curve corresponding to the known entering air temperature. Read down to determine the correction factor. Multiply this number by the standard rating found on page 9 to determine the rating at nonstandard conditions. 23 Accessories and Options Remote Mounted Thermostats Type K units can be controlled by a remote mounted, low voltage wall thermostat. Several variations of low voltage wall thermostats are available. The most common types used are manual changeover and automatic changeover. Figure 30 and Figure 31 illustrate the typical wiring schematics for proper connection of the Type K series units to the wall thermostat. Figure 30: Manual Changeover (MCO) R N/A G Y W 24V Power 24V Common Fan Cool Heat MCO T' Stat Figure 31: Automatic Changeover (ACO) Thermostat (10551) Jumper R R C G Y1 W1 C R C A G W2 Y1 W1 Factory installed jumper Control Unit Terminal Board Master Unit Control When using remote mounted thermostats, it is often necessary to control more than one Type K unit from a single thermostat. Figure 32 illustrates schematically how a controlling and controlled unit(s) are connected to a single thermostat. Note that the jumper between terminals C and A of the control Figure 32: Multiple Unit Control with Each Available Thermostat Jumper R R C G Y1 W1 Jumper R R C G Y1 W1 Jumper C C R H R C G Y1 W1 Thermostat Choice (See Figure 32) R C Factory installed jumper A G W2 Y1 W1 Control Unit Terminal Board unit is removed. This takes the controlling unit's transformer out of the circuit allowing it to duplicate the operation of the controlling unit. The controlling unit's transformer handles 50 VA power draw. Each controlling unit has up to 5.6 VA power draw. Up to seven controlled units can be connected to the controlling unit without danger of overheating the main transformer, although it is unlikely this many controlled units will be connected to one controlling unit. CAUTION Be sure to check the amperage rating of the wall thermostat to prevent exceeding the maximum amperage of the thermostat contacts. 24 Energy Saving Options Guest Room Control (GRC) This additional control, widely used by hotel/motel operations, is provided for use on Type K equipment. GRC allows the owner to substantially reduce energy consumption by de-energizing the equipment in unoccupied spaces. The Incremental units are wired to a central location, usually the front desk, where they are controlled by a toggle switch in a control panel (supplied by others). The units remain de-energized until the room becomes occupied, at which time the clerk can energize the equipment from the front desk (see Figure 33). Night Setback Control (NSB) Additional savings can be achieved through use of the night setback control (NSB). NSB incorporates an additional unit mounted thermostat to maintain a minimum, predetermined room temperature. The temperature is set at the factory to 55ºF (13ºC). This setpoint is adjustable by the owner to activate anywhere between 45ºF and 55ºF (7ºC and 13ºC). If the room temperature drops below the owner selected minimum temperature, the heat cycle and indoor fan are energized until the night setback thermostat is satisfied. NSB overrides the unit control even if it is placed in the stop position or inadvertently left in the cool position. Outdoor Air Dampers Type K units are furnished with an automatic outdoor air damper as standard. The automatic damper is wired in parallel to the indoor fan safety. If the unit is placed in the cycle mode, the fan and damper cycle as the thermostat cycles. If the unit is placed in the constant mode, the fan runs continuously and the damper is always open. The automatic damper feature can be overridden during NSB if the unit is so equipped. This prevents cold air from entering the occupied space when the unit is simply bringing the room back to the night setback temperature. Since NSB is used when the room is unoccupied, there is no reason to introduce outside air during this cycle. 25 Engineering Guide Specifications General Furnish packaged incremental comfort conditioners of the sizes and capacities shown on the schedule and/or specifications. The units shall be located as shown on the drawings and each shall include a wall box, room cabinet, separate cooling chassis, heating section, separate control box, and outdoor louver. All units shall be ETL listed for safety. Units shall be tested and rated in accordance with ARI Standards 310 and 3. Units shall be Daikin Type K Model designated with prefixes PKES (cooling chassis) or PKHS (heating section) or equals. Units shall be designed to operate on (115) (208) (230) (265) volts, 60 Hz, single-phase power. The minimum energy efficiency ratio (EER) in Btu per hour per watt for each packaged incremental comfort conditioner must be 8.0 for all sizes. Cooling Chassis Cooling chassis shall be slide-in, plug-in with a self-contained, hermetically sealed refrigerant circuit. All chassis sheet metal parts shall be constructed of heavy-gauge steel. The chassis shall be insulated with a waterproof material to prevent sweating and reduce sound levels. The cooling chassis shall consist of the following components: Vibration isolated, permanent split capacitor, rotary-type compressor with built in thermal overload; rifled copper tubed evaporator (indoor) and condenser (outdoor) coils with high efficiency raised lance aluminum plate fins mechanically expanded to the tubes for maximum heat transfer and a capillary restrictor type refrigerant metering device supplemented with a constant pressure automatic expansion valve. Coils shall be factory tested at 600 psig. Condenser airflow system shall consist of a separate, single speed PSC motor with an aluminum blade centrifugal fan. The motor shall be totally enclosed and permanently lubricated with external oilers for prolonged life. The fan shall be forward curved and statically and dynamically balanced to provide for quiet and smooth operation. The cooling chassis shall also be furnished with a positive closing, automatic, motorized outdoor air damper that opens whenever the indoor fan is energized, except during night setback operation. A toggle switch shall be provided for manual override of the damper. During the cooling cycle, the compressor and both the outdoor/condenser and indoor/evaporator fan motors shall be energized. Condensation accumulated in the indoor/evaporator drain pan shall be drained into the outdoor section of the unit where it is to be completely removed by evaporation. Evaporation shall be accomplished by uniformly distributing the condensate over the condenser coil via airflow generated by the outdoor/condenser fan. Condensate shall not come in contact with fan or fan motor. Slinger rings and propeller fans are not an acceptable solution for condensate removal. Heating Section The heat section shall be separate from the cooling chassis and shall incorporate an indoor/evaporator fan assembly. This assembly shall consist of two centrifugal fans that are forward curved and constructed out of aluminum with steel hubs and directly connected to a two-speed motor. Fans shall be statically and dynamically balanced to provide for quiet and smooth operation. The indoor/evaporator fan motor shall be two speed, permanent split capacitor, totally enclosed and permanently lubricated with external oilers for prolonged life. Built-in overload protection shall come standard with the motor. (Electric Resistance Heat Only Models) During the heating cycle, only the indoor/evaporator fan motor and electric resistance heaters are energized. The outdoor/condenser fan motor and compressor shall not be energized. Heaters shall be open wire type with quick response and high limit cutout. Electric resistance heaters shall be sized to meet heating requirements as shown on the schedule and/or specifications. Electric resistance heaters must not be visible or accessible through the indoor discharge grill. An electrical junction box shall be furnished for connection to field supplied power source. Additionally, a disconnect plug shall be factory installed for quick connection to the control box. (Hydronic Heat Models) The heating coil shall be suitable for hot water or steam supply and have a factory furnished (normally open) (normally closed) 2-way control valve. During the heating cycle only the indoor/evaporator fan motor, the control valve and automatic fresh air damper shall be energized. The outdoor/condenser fan motor and compressor shall not be energized. The heating coil shall have copper tubes with aluminum fins mechanically bonded for maximum heat transfer. Return piping shall be 5 /8 " O.D. plain copper tube. Control Box The control box shall be a separate component with plug-in connections to the heating section and cooling chassis. For sizes up to 14,000 Btuh, a concealed switch shall be furnished to automatically cycle or provide constant operation of the indoor fans. When placed in Cycle mode, the indoor/evaporator fans shall be automatically controlled by the thermostat when the HEAT, COOL, or FAN modes are selected. When placed in Constant mode, the fan shall run continuously except when the STOP button is depressed. Unit sizes above 14,000 Btuh shall always be furnished with constant fan operation only. The control overlay must be designed for the visuallyimpaired by containing large, raised function indicators and color-coded selector buttons placed on a white polycarbonate membrane. Raised function indicators must conform to standards set by the National Federation of the Blind and comply with the federally mandated American Disabilities Act (ADA). Catalog Page 25 of 28

26 Engineering Guide Specifications Room Cabinet The room cabinet shall be made of heavy-gauge steel and coated with oven baked polyurethane powder paint for maximum protection. To accommodate various wall opening locations and floor irregularities, an adjustable kickplate shall be furnished with a standard adjustment of +/- 1". A removable front panel shall be supplied for service access of the filter, electrical connections, cooling chassis and heat section. Hidden latches shall be provided to prevent unauthorized personnel from removing the front panel.
