IS YOUR HOME SAFE?
IS YOUR HOME SAFE? Read the other side, then complete the list below. Very important: DO NOT touch or try to fix electrical problems yourself! When you have completed the list, show it to an adult in your family. 1. Electric outlets and extension cords are not overloaded with plugs. SAFE NEEDS FIXING 2. Electric appliances that can get hot such as toasters, irons and light bulbs are kept away from things that can burn. 3. Electric cords do not run under rugs, furniture legs, or near hot appliances. 4. Safety caps are inserted in outlets if there are small children in the home. 5. All extension cords, lights, and appliances used outside are labeled for outdoor use. 6. People carry appliances by the handle, not the cord. 7. All cords are in good condition. 8. Small appliances are not used near water.
Is your family using electricity safely? Visit every room in your house and look outside. If you find any of these problems, place a check mark next to NEEDS FIXING on the back panel. Remember, DO NOT touch or try to fix the problems! Show an adult. Electric outlets and extension cords should not be overloaded. An outlet or extension cord with too many plugs can cause a fire. Look closely at the electrical wall sockets. If you find overloaded outlets, mark NEEDS FIXING on the checklist. 2. Electric appliances that can get hot such as toasters, irons and light bulbs should be kept away from things that can burn. Cloth, paper and other things that can burn can catch on fire if left too close. Mark this item NEEDS FIXING if you find this situation in your home.
3. Electric cords should not run under rugs, furniture legs, or near hot appliances. When an electrical cord gets too hot, it can be hazardous. Follow the cords from the outlets. If any cords are near motors or anything that gets hot, mark NEEDS FIXING on the list. Safety caps should be inserted in outlets when small children are around. It is extremely dangerously to stick anything into a plug because serious shock may occur. Crawling babies and toddlers need protection from this type of accident. Mark this item NEEDS FIXING if there are open outlets and small children in your home All extension cords, lights and appliances used outside should be labeled for outdoor use. Only heavy duty cords can be used outside without damage from sun and rain. Look for the outdoor use label and if you don t see it, mark NEEDS FIXING on the checklist. APPROVED FOR OUTDOOR USE
People should carry appliances by the handle, not the cord. Carrying an appliance by the cord or plug will damage the cord. A damaged cord could give someone an electrical shock. If people in your home need a reminder about this, mark NEEDS FIXING on the checklist Make sure electrical cords are in good condition. An electrical cord that is worn or frayed can give you a serious electrical shock. Inspect the cords throughout your home. If you find cuts and worn places, check NEEDS FIXING on the chart. Don t forget to ask an adult to turn off the appliance, unplug it and replace. 8. Small appliances should not be used near water. Electricity and water don t mix! Look at sinks and tubs in the bathroom and kitchen. If you see hair dryers, electric radios, rice cookers or any other electrical appliances close by, mark NEEDS FIXING on the checklist.
