Chemically, BETACURE 100 consists of Methyl Formate, a colorless liquid with a pleasant odor. Methyl Formate is highly soluble in water and is miscible with most organic solvents such as Alcohols, Ethers and Esters. Exposure to both the liquid and the vapor can irritate the eyes and the linings of the nose, throat, and lungs. Exposure to high concentrations of the vapor can cause headaches, drowsiness and unconsciousness. Workers handling methyl formate should wear chemical safety goggles, aprons and impervious gloves. Approved respiratory protection should be readily available for use in accordance with government regulations.

3 SAFE HANDLING PROCEDURES Methyl formate is a flammable liquid. The material should be kept away from heat, sparks and open flame, and the vapor should not be allowed to reach flammable limits (5 to 23% by volume in air). Building and equipment design for handling methyl formate should conform to all applicable National Fire Protection Association standards. Electrical equipment should conform to Sections 500 of the National Electrical Code. 1 No heating apparatus capable of reaching the autoignition temperature (449 C) of methyl formate should be used. The practices recommended in the M.C.A. Safety Guide SG-3 Flammable Liquids: Storage and Handling Drum Lots and Smaller Quantities should be used as guidelines for handling methyl formate. 2 Small hold tanks and containers should be protected from physical damage and stored in a cool, well-ventilated flammable liquids storage area. Bulk storage tanks should be located outside and detached from other buildings and away from inorganic acids and oxidizing agents. Tanks should be kept under slight positive pressure with an inert gas such as nitrogen in order to prevent vapor losses and the formation of flammable vapor / air mixtures. Methyl formate has a vapor pressure of mm Hg at 20 C. The tank should be detached from other tanks outside and should be equipped with proper flame arrestors and vent equipment so that external fires cannot spread to the inside of the tanks. As an extra measure of 1 protection inert gas blanketing of storage tanks is recommended to reduce the fire potential. All sources of flame, spark or ignition should be removed from all storage and handling areas. Storage of methyl formate should be in accordance with the provisions of the National Fire Protection Association 3 Pamphlet No. 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code. Construction materials which can be used with methyl formate are 316 SS, 304 SS, 3003 aluminum, 5154 aluminum or lined carbon steel. Carbon steel is not acceptable from a color and contamination standpoint. In the event of a spill, remove all sources of ignition. Keep personnel away from spill area. Dilute spilled material with large volumes of water. If spill is contained in a relatively safe location, cover with an approved foam as precautionary measure of fire and fume protection. Dike large spills and dump into salvage tanks. Prevent washings from entering all waterways. Disposal should be carried out in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding health, air and water pollution. Notify authorities in the event of major spills. Atomize waste in chemical incinerator.
