3 General Information This catalog contains checklists which summarize the provisions of ANSI Z358.1 with respect to each type of emergency equipment. These "ANSI Compliance Checklists" are found at the beginning of each section of this catalog. The checklist can be used to assist in the proper selection, installation and maintenance of emergency equipment. It can also be used in performing an audit of existing emergency equipment. LOCATION To comply with OSHA regulations, emergency eye wash and shower equipment must be installed in close proximity to any location where hazardous materials are handled. As a rule of thumb, the ANSI standard suggests that the distance from the hazardous materials to the emergency equipment not exceed 100 feet or 10 seconds walking time. However, emergency equipment should be located closer to the hazard if particularly injurious chemicals are being handled. In such cases, equipment should be located within 10 to 20 feet of employees. The location which is selected for emergency equipment should be free from obstructions and should be accessible from three sides. Users of the equipment should not have to walk around machinery or other obstacles to reach the unit. WATER SUPPLY Proper operation of emergency equipment requires the availability of a large and continuous supply of potable water. The water supply must, at a minimum, be capable of delivering the volumes of water required by the ANSI standard. Piping should be at least as large as the inlet size of of the unit to be installed. The water supply line must also be capable of delivering an uninterruptible flow of water of at least 30 PSI flow pressure. FLOW DATA The effectiveness of any piece of emergency equipment in rinsing away contaminant depends solely upon two factors: the volume of water produced, and the pattern in which it is delivered. Sellstrom units are engineered to provide superior performance in these two critical areas. CORROSION PROTECTION Emergency equipment is often installed in areas where it is exposed to corrosive materials. In these instances, it is advisable to use equipment which is corrosion resistant. Sellstrom offers a protective epoxy coating as an optional feature. Sellstrom also offers units which are constructed entirely of stainless steel or PVC. Selection of the appropriate corrosion resistant unit depends upon the materials to which the equipment may be exposed. Please call for additional information. 5 SentryWash EMERGENCY SHOWERS ANSI COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST The American National Standards Institute has issued ANSI Standard Z which establishes minimum performance requirements for emergency showers. This Standard also helps employers develop an emergency shower program by providing information that pertains to the installation, testing, training and maintenance of emergency equipment. This checklist summarizes the requirements of ANSI Z358.1 relating to emergency showers. Section references are to ANSI Z Use this checklist to evaluate the showers in your plant area. Shower head shall be between 82" and 96" from floor surface. (Section 4.1) "Hands-free" stay-open ball valve activates in one second or less. (Section 4.2) Shower must provide 30 gallons of water per minute. (Section 4.1) 20" Easily located, accessible actuator. 11 ANSI COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST ANSI Standard Z358.1 provides that drench hose units may supplement, but may not be used in place of, dedicated eye wash units. We offer a series of units which meet the requirements for both an eye wash and a drench hose. These dual purpose units can be used to combine an eye wash and a drench hose into a single versatile, economic unit. SentryWash EYE WASH/DRENCH HOSE UNITS This checklist summarizes the requirements for both eye washes and drench hoses. Section references are to ANSI Z (Section 5, Eye Washes and Section 8, Drench Hoses ). Where the requirements of these sections overlap, the more stringent of the two is stated. Use this checklist to verify the proper installation, performance and maintenance of dual purpose eye wash/drench hose units. Outlet heads shall be protected from airborne contaminants. (Section 5.1) Unit must deliver at least 3.0 gallons of water per minute for 15 minutes. (Sections 5.1 and 8.1) Controlled, low velocity flow completely rinses eyes and is not injurious to user. (Section and 8.1) Outlet heads shall be positioned between 33" and 45" from the floor and at least 6" from the wall or nearest obstruction. (Section 4.5) Shower valve must be simple to operate and go from "off" to "on" in one second or less. (Section 4.5) Shower head must be 82" 96" above floor surface. (Section 4.1) Shower actuator must be easily located and readily accessible to user. (Section 4.3) At 60" above floor surface, the water pattern must be at least 20" in diameter. (Section 4.5) Outlet heads must be positioned between 33" and 45" from the floor and at least 6" from the wall or nearest obstruction. (Section 5.4) Protect outlet heads from airborne contaminants.
