3 Welcome natural warmth and comfort to your home Metro fires are proudly designed and manufactured in New Zealand for kiwi homes A Metro fire will do more than simply heat your home. It can also heat water, save on power bills, provide security against electricity restrictions or outages, and can also be used to cook on and boil water for drinking. Metro wood fires are proudly designed and made in New Zealand, using the highest quality materials, workmanship and the very latest manufacturing techniques. Ongoing investment into research and development, rigorous quality control and premium warranties are testament to Metro s commitment to remain at the forefront of the wood fire industry. Wood fires release their heat through a combination of heat radiation, which heats objects, and convection which heats the air. The amount of each varies with most models being predominantly one type or the other. A convection wood fire heats the air immediately around it. Hot air is lighter (less dense) so it rises away from the wood fire and gets replaced with cooler air that is then heated. This convection air-current means that the hottest air in the room rises up to the ceiling with the warmer air remaining in the lower part of your room. Radiant wood fires release heat into the room by radiating an infrared heat directly from the outer surfaces of the appliance onto any object in close proximity. This results in more heat being retained lower in the room. Ideal for older and less insulated (or draughty) homes, and homes with higher ceilings. 4 5 easy steps to choosing and installing a Metro fire in your home There are many factors to consider when installing a wood fire in your home and ensuring you select the correct size and model for your home and heating requirements is key. Choosing the right wood fire and correct operation with good dry fuel will provide you with years of warmth and trouble-free heating. Our 5 easy steps will assist you in choosing a suitable model and your Metro specialist or installer can provide any further advice you require. The fold-out tab inside the rear cover of this catalogue provides a quickfire key to the icons detailed beside each model throughout the catalogue. Check your property size 1 If less than 2ha, you can only install a clean air model If 2ha or more, you can install an LTD or clean air model Check your local council bylaws 2Some councils have more stringent emission requirements than the National Environmental Standards which permits a maximum of 1.5 grams of particulates per kilogram of fuel burnt with a minimum heating efficiency of 65%. Choose the right model Metro fire 3Measure the area (m2) you wish to heat. Homes with a high stud, lack of insulation or installation of a wetback or heat transfer system may require more heating capacity. A Metro specialist can provide further advice. Your Metro fire can be freestanding, insert or built-in. Select the best installation location 4The position of your fire will determine how well it heats your home. Position your fire for optimum flue installation. A Metro retailer or installer should visit your home to advise on the correct model and position for your needs. Use an approved installer 5Metro wood fires should be installed by an approved installer and must be installed to the manufacturers specifications. Your Metro specialist or installer may also manage the council permit process through to completed installation. 3

20 Trusted reliable heat for your home 10 Year Warranty (The Installation/Operation manual included with your wood fire contains full details) Metro wood fires are manufactured in New Zealand, using the highest quality of materials, workmanship and the latest manufacturing techniques, which is why we offer a full 10 year firebox warranty and 1 year parts warranty for peace of mind. Pioneer Manufacturing Limited (Pioneer) warrants the steel firebox against defective materials and workmanship which would render it unfit for normal domestic use, from the date of purchase by the original consumer, for a period of 10 years. Components including panel coating, door retainers, door seals, glass, trim, baffle & bricks are warranted for a period of 1 year from the date of original purchase for domestic use against defective materials and workmanship. In order to achieve the best performance and longevity from your Metro, it is recommended that a full service inspection is carried out at the end of each winter season. This will ensure any sacrifical parts that may need replacing are monitored on a regular basis. The New Zealand Home Heating Association The NZ Home Heating Association was formed in 1985, by a group of wood heating manufacturers and retailers who saw a need to improve the standards of product and workmanship within the industry. Since then the Association has played an active role in the development of appliance and installation standards both nationally and internationally and has become the industry s mouthpiece. It also plays a major role in the development and promotion of clean air standards, and energy and resource conservation. It runs a certification for installer and retailer members to help ensure that the appropriate standards are maintained at all levels within the industry. The Association is affiliated with similar trade groups and organisations throughout the world. The New Zealand Home Heating Association is a trade organisation, comprising most of NZ s leading wood fire manufacturers, retailers and installers, and is dedicated to providing professional services and advice to it s members and their customers. Wood is good for us and the environment Wood is the worlds most sustainable fuel source and great for heating your home. Wood is natural, carbon neutral, and releases the same amount of CO2 when burnt as if it were left to decompose. CO2 produced by burning wood is re-absorbed by plants and trees through the process of photosynthesis, helping the trees grow and producing oxygen for us to breathe. Oxygen is released Carbon Dioxide is absorbed back into the trees Oxygen is released Carbon Dioxide is released New Zealand s climate produces a lush green environment, ideal for pine plantations which ensures there is long term availability of cost effective fuel. Burning wood efficiently and cleanly is good for the environment and is still the cheapest form of heating for your home, even if you have to purchase firewood. By burning dry, well seasoned wood fuel, you release more heat into your home and require less fuel to do so. Take control of your home s heating costs and drive out the cold this coming winter by installing a Metro wood fire and ECO Flue System. Water and Nutrients Wood is burnt releasing energy as heat into the home This diagram shows the process of photosynthesis, which is one reason why wood is the world s number one sustainable fuel and is carbon neutral. No matter how much wood we use, it will always be reproduced without increasing New Zealand s carbon footprint. 19

21 Metro climate control systems Create a dry, healthy environment and reduce condensation and dampness in your home. Metro heat transfer systems utilise the excess heat created by your wood fire, and distribute it via a ducting system to warm other rooms within your home. Excess heat from your wood fire becomes trapped at ceiling level where it can reach temperatures of up to 30-35ºC. By distributing this excess heat you can easily warm your entire home. 1 Room 1 Room Heat Transfer System Ideal for smaller homes or if you are only requiring one additional room to be heated. 24 Peak performance from an ECO flue system Maintain a warm home with no heat loss and reduce fuel consumption Metro have dedicated years of development and testing to deliver the best performance and efficiency from a flue system. A Metro ECO Flue System will retain the warmth from your Metro wood fire in your home, and reduce your fuel consumption at the same time. Standard with every ECO Flue System, is the easilyrecognisable Metro ECO Cowl. The rocket shaped ECO Cowl operates on a vertical discharge principle, and induces updraft to the flue gases to increase draw within the flue pipe. Metro offer both the ECO Base Flue System and the ECO Option Kit with optional stainless steel liners for a superior look and finish. The Metro ECO Flue system is superior to a conventional flue system as it draws its cooling air into the flue liners from either your home s ceiling cavity or from outside your home (ECO Option Kit required). This reduces your fuel consumption and ensures the heat produced by your wood fire is retained within your home instead of escaping up the flue. The energy savings achieved by the ECO Base Flue System are impressive. Lab testing of a conventional flue system resulted in the heated air produced by a wood fire being drawn out of the home at an astounding rate of 450 litres per minute. Metro ECO Option Kit The Metro ECO Option Kit is designed for installation in combination with the Metro ECO Base Flue System. The ECO Option Kit enables homes without a vented ceiling cavity, or with a sloping ceiling, to still achieve the same performance and efficiency benefits the Metro ECO Base Flue System provides. Conventional Flue Systems Conventional flue systems draw their cooling air from the room that is being heated by your wood fire. This results in the heated air from your wood fire being drawn out of your home. This heated air is then replaced with cold outside air drawn back into your home. On a cold winter s night this hugely inefficient system can empty an average sized room once every hour of potentially 28ºC air. It replaces it with the outside air which in some regions can be below zero. 26 Insert and built-in specifications Floor Protector Requirements A floor protector must project from behind the fascia the distance specified (I) in the table below, and 200mm from each side of the door opening. Minimum projection is the distance from the front of the wall lining (behind the fascia) to the front non combustible point of the floor protector. Smart Insert Requires an insulating floor protector with recommended construction of tiles on 26mm thick eterpan or equivalent. The forward projection is dependent on the height of the fireplace insert above the combustible floor, which is detailed below. ECO Trend Insert On properties less than 2 hectares, the ECO Trend Insert must be installed with Metro s thermo fan which is a single speed, thermostatically controlled device. The ECO Trend Insert only requires a non-insulating ashhearth floor protector. Recommended construction is tiles on 6mm thick non combustible board, but any noncombustible material fixed directly to a combustible floor is acceptable, including glass, steel or aluminium sheet. LTD Trend Insert Requires an insulating floor protector. The forward projection is dependent on the height of the fireplace insert above the combustible floor. The schedule of projections listed for heights of 0mm to 41mm+ can be achieved by the thickness of the floor protector, raising the insert or a combination of the two. Recommended construction is tiled eterpan with a combined thickness as detailed below. Mega Smart Built-In Requires an insulating floor protector with recommended construction of 18mm thick eterpan board or equivalent, finished with a non combustible tile or similar. The floor protector must be a minimum width of 1057mm with a minimum overall projection of 505mm. 27 Freestanding specifications Minimum clearances All Metro wood fires comply with AS/NZS 2918:2001. Minimum clearances shown below are detailed in millimetres, with a Pioneer double flue shield fitted to the appliance. Measurements are taken from the following reference points as illustrated. From the nearest combustible wall or surface (A, B, D, E, G, H) From the Metro s flue centre (A, B, C, D) From the Metro s cabinet/heatshield outermost point (E, F, G, H) To the edge of the ash floor protectors non-combustible surface (C, F, I, J, K, L, M) AS/NZS 2918:2001 allows for a reduction in minimum clearances as detailed in tables 3.1 and 3.2 of the standard. Some Metro models have undergone additional testing which allows for reduced clearances. Please see the footnotes below the table for the applicable models. Specifications were correct at the time of printing, but may alter and those detailed should be used as a guide only. If in doubt, please consult your nearest Metro retailer. Wetback connections taken facing the Metro/wall Tiny models are 92mm left of the flue centre. Wee models are 226mm left of the flue centre. Classic model is 183mm left of the flue centre.
