Overview: First Thing First Installation of Gas Appliances should only be attempted by qualified and licensed technicians. There is a very real risk of property and personal damage (including death) if a gas heater is improperly installed. FOR YOUR SAFETY This product must be installed and serviced by authorized personnel, qualified in pool/ spa heater installation. Improper installation and/or operation can create carbon monoxide gas and flue gases that can cause serious injury, property damage, or death. IMPORTANT NOTICE: The installation instructions are intended for the use of a qualified technician, specifically trained and experienced in the installation of this type of heating equipment. Some states or provinces require that installation be licensed. If this is the case in the state or province where heater is located, the contractor must be properly licensed. WARNING: Failure to comply with the appliance and vent package installation instructions and service instructions in this manual may result in equipment damage, fire, asphyxiation, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Exposure to products of incomplete combustion (carbon monoxide) can cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. CONFORMANCE WITH CODES: The heater shall be installed in accordance with all local and state codes. The heater installation must con- form to the latest edition of the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54) and with the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction. Design certification of the heater is in compliance with ANSI Z21.56/CSA 4.7. For Canadian installations, the heater is to be installed in accordance with the standards CAN/CGA B149.1 and B149.2 Installation Codes for Gas Burning Appliances and Equipment and/or local codes and, if applicable, CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code, Part I.
Overview: Gas Definitions Flow: noun-the action or fact of moving along in a steady, continuous stream. The flow of gas through the pipe verb-(of a fluid, gas, or electricity) move along or out steadily and continuously in a current or stream. The gas flows through the pipe Pressure: noun-the continuous physical force exerted on or against an object by something in contact with it. The expansion of gas inside a pipe creates pressure. Pressure is a measure of the force applied over a unit area. Area: The space defined by two dimensions. The area of a circle is ππrr 2.
Overview: Gas Definitions (cont.) Volume: The amount of a substance. The volume of gas necessary for proper fire is determined by the size and number of the orifices in the heater. Static: Lacking in movement, action, or change. Check the static pressure of the gas when the valve is closed. Load: The amount of work assigned to or to be done by a person, team, department, machine, or mechanical system. The gas load on the heater is 250,000 BTUH. Inches of Water Column (IWC): A measurement of pressure based on how high a column of water the pressure can raise. For reference 1 PSI equals 28 inches of water column. Specific Gravity: The ratio of the density of a gas as compared to air. Specific Gravity of air is 1.
Flow vs Pressure
Flow vs Pressure: Explained vs Flow Pressure Gas pressure is what pushes the gas through the piping system. The greater the pressure the greater the flow, and the greater the flow the greater the volume. BUT.. Gas pressure is regulated for safety reasons, so if there is insufficient volume what can be done?
Flow vs Pressure: Explained (cont.) Get a bigger pipe! The gas pressure may be correct, but if the pipe is too small to support the correct volume of gas, the heater will not operate correctly. Conversely, if you have the correct size pipe, but insufficient gas pressure, the flow will be too low to supply a sufficient volume of gas.
Flow vs Pressure: Explained (cont.) What have we learned? Flow is dependent on pressure. Restricting the pipe size will raise the pressure in the pipe, but will not increase the volume. Volume is dependent on pipe size (area) AND pressure. In the end Volume is key. If you have sufficient volume of gas the heater will fire correctly.
Heater Types
Heater Types: Atmospheric Draft Gas heaters can be divided into 3 distinct categories 1. Atmospheric Draft. These heaters rely on the temperature of the exhaust gases to vent them away from the heater, and to create a draft into the combustion chamber that draws fresh air in for correct burn. Millivolt heaters are Atmospheric Heaters.
Heater Types: Induced Draft Gas heaters can be divided into 3 distinct categories 2. Induced Draft. These heaters use a fan to draw air into the combustion chamber. The products of combustion that are exhausted from the heater are drawn through the fan and exhausted from the heater under pressure. Induced Draft heaters can be identified by the presence of a blower on the top of the combustion chamber
Heater Types: Forced Draft Gas heaters can be divided into 3 distinct categories 3. Forced Draft. These heaters use a fan to force air into the combustion chamber and out the exhaust. Forced Draft heaters have sealed combustion chambers since they are under pressure from the fan.
Gas Pressure
Gas Pressure: What Pressure Do I Need? There are 3 different pressures we need to measure! 1. Static Pressure: The pressure of the gas in the piping when the gas valve is closed. Measured on the inlet side of the gas valve. 2. Load Pressure: The pressure of the gas in the piping when the gas valve is open. Measured on the inlet side of the gas valve. 3. Manifold Pressure: The pressure of the gas on the outlet side of the gas valve. Measured on the outlet side of the gas valve..when the gas valve is open.
Gas Pressure: What Pressure Do I Need? (cont.) How do I know what those pressures should be? Look on the data plate But what does it all mean?!?!?!?
Gas Pressure: What Pressure Do I Need? (cont.) Looking at the data plate Propane Gas Type of gas How much gas Minimum Inlet Pressure (Under Load) Maximum Inlet Pressure Manifold Pressure
Gas Pressure: What Pressure Do I Need? (cont.) Looking at the data plate Natural Gas Type of gas How much gas Minimum Inlet Pressure (Under Load) Maximum Inlet Pressure Manifold Pressure
Gas Pressure: What happens If I Don t have Enough? If the Gas Pressure / Supply is too low: 1. A small line can supply pressure, but as soon as the gas valve opens the diameter (area) of the pipe must be able to provide the proper volume of gas required to fire the burners at the desired rate. If the volume is restricted due to pipe size, regulator sizing or meter sizing, the burners can not fire at full rate. 2. Can result in nuisance flame failures and other operational problems. 3. The heater efficiency and output is decreased. 4. Warranty is voided.
Gas Pressure: What happens If I Don t have Enough? If the Gas Pressure is too high: 1. Excessive gas supply pressure can either lock the gas valve or regulator in a closed position or, in the case of extremely high gas pressure; it may override the gas valve, damage the diaphragm and allow unrestricted gas flow to the burners. 2. Extremely high gas pressure can result in a catastrophic failure of the equipment. 3. Warranty is voided.
Gas Properties
Gas Properties: Flame Characteristics
Gas Properties: Propane & Natural Gas Propane is sold and delivered in a liquid state (gallons), but is used by the appliance in a vapor state One gallon of propane contains approx. 91,500 BTU s Propane have a Specific Gravity of 1.52 Natural gas is sold and delivered in a vapor state (ft³), and is used by the appliance in a vapor state. One gallon of natural gas contains approx. 101,000 BTU s One ft³ of natural gas contains approx BTU s Natural Gas has a Specific Gravity of.65 One gallon of propane weighs 4.2 lbs., and contains approx. 36 ft³ of vaporized gas. It requires approx ft³ of air for proper combustion. One gallon of natural gas weighs 3.5 lbs., and contains approx. 83 ft³ of vaporized gas. It requires approx. 830 ft³ of air for proper combustion.
Gas Properties: Propane Propane is a liquid in the tank, but goes to the appliance as a gas. It evaporates in the tank, becoming a high pressure gas. A 1 st stage regulator at the tank reduces the pressure of the gas to around 10 PSI before it goes to the appliance. At the appliance a second stage regulator reduces the pressure further to water column. The larger the surface area of the tank, the greater the rate of evaporation. In addition, the warmer the air around the tank, the greater the rate of evaporation. 65 Gas Pressure: Requirements & Proper Ignition With standard or atmospheric type heaters proper gas supply is required. The problem is they will light and fire on low gas pressure (sooting will occur in time). When going from a atmospheric to a fan driven Low NOx heater, the heater may not fire unless the gas pressure is within range.
Gas Pressure: Requirements for Proper Ignition NOTE: When a Low NOx heater does not light we call that Insufficient Fuel. All new users of Low NOx heaters that have used atmospheric style heaters and did not pay attention to gas supply, you will need to do so from now on.

Gas Pressure: What The Manual Says Figure 16 : GAS PIPE SIZE Follow local gas codes for proper gas line material selection (copper, iron, plastic, etc.) LOW PRESSURE NATURAL GAS PIPE SIZING: (Based upon an inlet gas pressure of 0.5 psig or less at a pressure drop of 0.5 in-wc) Distance from Gas Meter to Heater Gas Valve Inlet Model H150FDN H200FDN H250FDN H300FDN H350FDN H400FDN btu/hr input 150, , , , , ,000 Line Material Iron or Plastic Pipe Iron or Plastic Pipe Iron or Plastic Pipe Iron or Plastic Pipe Iron or Plastic Pipe Iron or Plastic Pipe 0 to 50 ft 3/4" 1" 1" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 50 to 100 ft 1" 1" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 100 to 200 ft 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/2" 1-1/2" 1-1/2" 200 to 300 ft 1-1/4" 1-1/4" 1-1/2" 2" 2" 2"
Gas Pressure: LP Requirements for Proper Ignition Most homes with a 200,000 BTU load requirement can operate off a 500 gallon propane tank at 20%. When You add a 400,000 BTU heater you have tripled the load. At this point you need to keep the tank no lower than 40% to ensure the heater is getting the correct BTU s for operation.
Gas Pressure: LP - Two Stage System Preferred install as line from tank to 2nd stage is 10 PSI. Less problems. 13 WC Max Refer to Manual for Line Sizing.
Venting
Venting: Basics Outdoor: Follow all National, State and Local Codes. Follow installation clearance guidelines!!! Products of combustion can lead to serious injury or death even when the heater is installed outdoors. These products of combustion can enter the house if the heater is improperly placed. LOCATING THE HEATER: Locate the pool/spa/hot tub heater in an area where leakage of the heat exchanger or connections will not result in damage to the area adjacent to the heater or to the structure. When such locations cannot be avoided, it is recommended that a suitable drain pan, with drain outlet, be installed under the heater. The pan must not restrict airflow. This heater must be installed at least (5) feet from the inside wall of a pool (in-ground or aboveground)/ spa/hot tub unless separated from the pool/spa/hot tub by a solid barrier. The heater must be installed such that the location of the exhaust gas vent assembly outlet relative to adjacent public walkways, adjacent buildings, openable windows, and building openings complies with the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54) and/or CAN/CGA B149 installation codes. Outdoor installation and service clearances: The heater must be installed outdoors such that the installation and service clearances from combustible materials shown in Table 2 are maintained. This heater may be installed on combustible floors. 1. The heater is self-venting when installed outdoors and does not require additional vent piping. 2. Do not install in a location where growing shrubs may in time obstruct a heater s combustion air and venting areas. 3. Do not install this appliance under an overhang less than (3) feet from the top of the appliance. The area under the overhang must be open on (3) sides. Diagram courtesy of Zodiac 4. Do not install the heater where water spray from ground sprinkler can contact the heater. The water could splash on the controls causing electrical damage. 5. Do not install under a deck.
Venting: Basics (cont.) Indoor: Follow all National, State and Local Codes. Follow installation clearance guidelines!!! Know if your installation is positive or negative venting. Follow all guidelines on vent pipe materials, both from the appliance manufacturer, and from the vent pipe manufacturer. Don t do it if you aren t qualified and licensed!!! Clearances: The heater must be installed such that the installation and service clearances from combustible materials shown in Table 4 are maintained. This heater may be installed on combustible floors. Do not install heater in a closet. Table 4 Indoor Installation Clearances Heater Panel Top Front Back Water Connection Side Side Opposite Water Connection Required Clearance 36 inches 24 inches 6 inches 12 inches 6 inches
Venting: Gas Heaters Proper Vent Size and Material Vent Pipe Diameter MUST Be as Required by the National Fuel Gas Code Z Undersize pipe can result in Inadequate Venting Oversize pipe can result in Vent Condensation Either Case can Result in Release of Combustion Products to the Indoors Causing Serious Injury or Death by Carbon Monoxide Poisoning or Asphyxiation If Connecting to an Pre-Existing Vent System Make Sure the Vent System Meets the Requirements of the Heater Manufacturer
Venting: Negative Pressure Negative Vent Pressure: By definition, gases inside a negative pressure vent system are under no pressure to escape. These gases will simply exit upward (since hot air rises) through a properly designed, mostly vertical Negative Vent System. Negative Vent Systems do not need to be gas tight, but may need to be taped if required by local or state codes. Negative Vent Systems always terminate vertically.
Venting: Negative Pressure (cont.) Category I Non-positive / Negative Vent Static Pressure Vent Termination - Vertical Vent Extending Through a Roof Vent Must be Listed Double Wall (Type B) Vent Must Pass Through an Approved Roof Jack or Roof Thimble Vent Cap Must be Listed and Used Vents Less Than 8 ft Horizontally from a Vertical Wall or Similar Obstruction Shall Terminate Not Less Than 2 ft Above Any Portion of a Building Within 10 ft Vents More Than 8 ft Horizontally from a Vertical Wall or Similar Obstruction Shall Terminate Above the Roof a Distance H Based on the Roof Pitch (See Fig. 3 and Table 6)
Venting: Positive Pressure Positive Pressure Vent: By definition, gases inside a positive pressure vent system are under pressure to escape. These gases will find any exit possible. All seams and joints in a positive pressure vent system must be sealed. The vent pipe used on positive pressure vent systems is especially designed for this type of system. Positive Pressure Venting Systems can be terminated vertically or horizontally.
Venting: Air Supply One ft³ of propane requires 30 ft³ of air for proper combustion. One ft³ of natural gas requires 10 ft³ of air for proper combustion. One opening shall be within 12 inches of the top and one within 12 inches of the bottom of the enclosure. CAUTION: Chemicals should NOT be stored near the heater installation. Combustion Air can be contaminated by corrosive chemical fumes which can void manufacturers warranty

Troubleshooting: Basics The majority of gas heaters today have onboard diagnostics that will alert the user to issues. Read the troubleshooting guide in the heater manual to familiarize yourself with the error codes you may see. Check gas pressures routinely as a many issues are related to incorrect gas pressure. Keep heater combustion chambers clean All heaters have a minimum water flow requirement. Most are protected from dry fire by a water pressure, or water flow switch. Ensure that the proper flow of water is being delivered to the heater when it is running. Improper pool chemistry is the death of heater heat exchangers. Keep pool water maintained. Check for spider webs in orifices when a heater will not fire.
