Standard) certified cooling EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio) of 9.7. This exceptionally high rating assures minimum operating costs and will qualify for attractive utility rebates in many areas. Semi-hermetic compressors The 50HJQ unit uses the Carlyle 06D semi-hermetic compressors. These serviceable compressors are highly regarded, preferred by owners and users, and are offered exclusively on the Carrier high-efficiency 50HJQ016 units. Two 06D semi-hermetic compressors on independent refrigeration circuits are offered on these 50HJQ016 units for 2 steps of capacity control and redundancy. 2 complement of safety devices, including high- and low-pressure switches, over-temperature protection, lowtemperature protection, an electronic cooling lockout device, and crankcase heaters. High static oversized fan motors and variable-pitch belt drives The 50HJQ016 unit has oversized evaporator-fan motors and variablepitch belt drives supplied standard from the factory to provide over 5.76 kpa (1.7 in. wg) of external static pressure at 1.89 L/s (400 cfm) per ton with wet coils and clean filters installed. This increases to 6.77 kpa (2.0 in. wg) with field-supplied pulleys. A 5 hp motor is provided standard. Easy installation The 50HJQ016 rooftop heat pump units are perfect for vertical supply and return roof curb mount applications on new construction, retrofit, and replacement applications. The unique industry-leading compact size and weight are favored by designers, contractors, owners, and users. The compact physical size and weight are not only advantages in terms of minimizing required roof structures on new construction and retrofit jobs, but also make the 50HJQ016 the perfect replacement unit for the original Carrier 50DP,DR (cooling only) or 50PQ (heat pump) units installed in the late 1970s and early 1980s to meet the upgraded job requirements of the 1990s. The new 50HJQ units can be easily converted to horizontal supply and return with Carrier s new fanperformance-boosting, horizontal, high-static regain adapter (part no. 50DP900211). This vertical-tohorizontal supply/return adapter is not only fully factory assembled with a built-in insulated transition duct, it improves fan performance by as much as 2.03 kpa (0.6 in. wg) of static. Efficient operation, dependable performance Built with energy efficiency in mind, the 50HJQ cooling coils feature staggered copper tubes and mechanically bonded aluminum fins to provide top efficiency. A manual outdoor-air damper can be preset to admit up to 25% outdoor air for year-round ventilation. Units equipped with economizer have a thermostatically controlled, fully modulating damper which admits up to 100% outdoor air and provides lowcost cooling. Temperature control governs economizer cooling changeover to provide lowest cost operation in mild weather. Special check valves and fixed orifice refrigerant metering provide improved heat transfer for the best performance possible during both heating and cooling modes. The patented Chronotemp defrost system uses time and temperature to keep the outdoor coil frost-free for economical, dependable cooling operation at temperatures down to 4 C (40 F) as shipped from the factory. Accessory low-ambient kit permits unit operation in cooling at outdoor ambient temperatures down to 29 C ( 20 F). Condenser fans are direct driven, factory-lubricated, and positioned for quiet, efficient vertical discharge. The 50HJQ unit s high technology design features a computer-programmed balance between compressor, outdoor section, and indoor section. Carrier specified semi-hermetic compressors are equipped with crankcase heaters, calibrated circuit breakers for overcurrent protection, and Cycle-LOC compressor protection. If any safety device trips, Cycle-LOC compressor protection prevents short cycling by shutting off the compressor until the Cycle-LOC protection mechanism is reset. Compressor restart is accomplished at the space thermostat. The crankcase heater prevents refrigerant dilution of oil during off cycles ensuring proper lubrication at start-up and prolonging compressor life. Electric heat and an integrated economizer are accessories/options on all units. The weather resistant cabinet is designed for durability under all climatic conditions. GLYCOL COIL HEAD PRESSURE CONTROL MOTORMASTER I The 50HJQ standard units are designed to operate at outdoor temperatures down to 4 C (40 F). With accessory Motormaster control (outdoor-fan speed modulation), units can operate at lower outdoor temperatures. The head pressure controls, which mount in the outdoor-air section, modulate the outdoor-fan motor to maintain correct condensing temperature. Refer to unit price pages for complete information on low outdoor-ambient operation accessories or contact your local Carrier representative. TIME GUARD II CONTROL Time Guard II Control automatically prevents compressor from restarting for at least 5 minutes after a shutdown. Accessory prevents short cycling of compressor if thermostat is rapidly changed. Accessory Time Guard II device mounts in the control compartment of unit to provide control on circuit 2. Time Guard II control is standard on compressor no. 1. Glycol coil is intended for add-on type applications or new installations where a boiler system is available. Glycol coil and electric heat cannot be installed together. NOTE: Dimensions in ( ) are in millimeters. ELECTRONIC PROGRAMMABLE THERMOSTAT Electronic programmable thermostat provides efficient temperature control by allowing you to program heating and cooling setbacks and setups with provisions for weekends and holidays. Accessory remote sensing package is also available to provide tamperproof control in high-traffic areas. Used in conjunction with factory-installed Apollo communicating control, this thermostat provides a 5-minute recycle timer between modes of operation for short-cycle protection. The 50HJQ units have 2 independent control circuits, each with a different transformer. Due to this advanced design, a thermostat with the capability to handle heating (RH terminal) and cooling (RC terminal) separately is required for proper unit operation. If a jumper is provided on the thermostat between the RH and RC terminals, it MUST be removed prior to unit start-up. 7

8 Options and accessories (cont) THERMOSTAT H C Zone thermostat (24 v) provides 2-stage cooling for control of unit. Matching subbases are available with or without tamperproof switches and automatic changeover. The 50HJQ units have 2 independent control circuits, each with a different transformer. Due to this advanced design, a thermostat with the capability to handle heating (RH terminal) and cooling (RC terminal) separately is required for proper unit operation. If a jumper is provided on the thermostat between the RH and RC terminals, it MUST be removed prior to unit start-up. OPTIONAL FACTORY-INSTALLED APOLLO COMMUNICATING CONTROLS POWER EXHAUST When used with accessory/optional economizer, the power exhaust accessory helps to relieve building over-pressurization. The Apollo direct digital controls are designed exclusively by Carrier, and are used to actively monitor all modes of operation as well as indoor-fan status, filter status, supply-air temperature, outdoor-air temperature, and indoor-air quality. They are designed to work in conjunction with Carrier TEMP and VVT system thermostats. INTEGRATED ECONOMIZER ELECTRIC HEATER Electric heaters are available in a wide range of capacities for factory or field installation. Units equipped with economizer have a thermostatically controlled, fully modulating damper which admits up to 100% outdoor air and provides low-cost cooling. Temperature control governs economizer cooling changeover to provide lowest cost operation in mild weather (down to 13 C [55 F]). 8

26 Controls Sequence of operation Cooling, units without economizer With unit main power on, set thermostat to COOL position and desired room temperature. Set fan switch at AUTO. (on demand) or ON (continuous) position. On a rise in room temperature, cooling contact no. 1 in the thermostat closes. The indoor and outdoor fan motors start. If the 5-minute compressor time-delay (CTD) on the defrost board (DB) is satisfied, then compressor no. 1 contactor is energized and compressor will start. Compressor cycles on demand of the thermostat to satisfy room conditions. Each time the cooling contactor no. 1 opens, the CTD starts the 5-minute delay. With an additional rise in room temperature, cooling contactor no. 2 in the thermostat closes, energizing compressor contactor no. 2. Compressor no. 2 starts and cycles on demand of the thermostat to satisfy the occupied space demands. Cooling, units with economizer Upon a call for cooling, when outdoor ambient temperature is above the temperature control setting, the indoor and outdoor fans and compressor(s) energize. The economizer damper moves to vent position. Upon a first-stage call for cooling, when outdoor ambient temperature is below the temperature control setting, the indoor fan starts and economizer damper modulates to maintain mixed-air temperature. The compressors remain off. Upon a second-stage call for cooling, compressor no. 1 is energized and mechanical cooling is integrated with economizer cooling. Compressor no. 2 is locked out. If the air temperature is below 10 C (50 F), a cooling lockout switch prevents the compressor(s) from running. When supply-air temperature drops below a fixed set point, the economizer damper modulates to maintain the temperature at the fixed set point. A freeze protection thermostat (FPT) is located on the indoor coil. It detects frost build-up and turns off the compressor(s), allowing the coil to clear. Once frost has melted, the compressor can be reenergized. Heating, units without economizer With unit main power on, set thermostat at HEAT position and desired room temperature. Set fan switch at AUTO. (on demand) or ON (continuous) position. On a drop in room temperature, heating contact no. 1 in the thermostat closes, energizing heat relay (HR), reversing valve relay (RVR), reversing valve solenoids (RVS1 and RVS2) and compressor no. 2 contactor. Compressor no. 2 and indoor and outdoor fan motors start. If the 5-minute CTD on the DB is satisfied, then compressor no. 1 contactor is energized and compressor no. 1 will start. On units equipped with electric heat, when additional heat is needed, heating contactor no. 2 in the thermostat closes, energizing W2. Heating, units with economizer With unit main power on, set thermostat at HEAT position and desired room temperature. Set fan switch at AUTO. (on demand) or ON (continuous) position. On a drop in room temperature, heating contact no. 1 in the thermostat closes, energizing heat relay (HR), reversing valve relay (RVR), reversing valve solenoids (RVS1 and RVS2) and compressor no. 2 contactor. Compressor no. 2 and indoor and outdoor fan motors start. If the 5-minute compressor time delay (CTD) on the defrost board (DB) is satisfied, then compressor no. 1 contactor is energized and compressor no. 1 will start. The outdoor-air damper stays at vent position while the indoor fan is operating. On units equipped with electric heat, when additional heat is needed, heating contactor no. 2 in the thermostat closes, energizing W2. Defrost cycle When the temperature of the outdoor coil drops below 3 C (28 F) as sensed by the defrost thermostat (DFT1 or DFT2), the defrost timer starts. At the end of a timed period (field set at 30, 50, or 90 minutes), the defrost cycle will begin. The defrost board energizes terminals O and W2, energizes the defrost relay (DR), deenergizes the reversing valve solenoids (RVS1 and RVS2), and energizes the electric heat. The outdoor-fan motor will stop. The unit continues to defrost either until the coil temperature as measured by DFT1 or DFT2 reaches 18 C (65 F), or until unit completes a 10-minute defrost cycle. During the defrost mode, when a circuit defrosts, RVS will oscillate between heating and cooling modes until defrost mode is complete. This will prevent the head pressure from getting too high. At the end of the defrost cycle, the electric heaters (if applicable) will be deenergized, the reversing valve solenoids will be energized, and the outdoor fans will start. Automatic changeover When the system selection switch is set at AUTO. position, unit automatically changes from heating operation to cooling operation when the temperature of the conditioned space rises to the cooling lever setting. When the temperature of the conditioned space falls to the heating lever setting, unit automatically changes from cooling to heating operation (with a 1.7 C [3 F] deadband in between). Continuous air circulation Turn unit power on. Set system control at OFF position. Set fan switch at ON position. The indoor-fan contactor is energized through the thermostat switch and the indoor fan runs continuously. Cycle-LOC protection If unit operation is interrupted by an open high-pressure switch, low-pressure switch, indoor coil freezestat, or by compressor internal line-break device (overcurrent or overtemperature), and compressor is calling for either cooling or heating, Cycle-LOC protection device simultaneously locks out unit and lights a warning light on the thermostat. Restart the unit by manually turning thermostat to OFF and then to ON position. If any of the protective devices opens again, the unit continues to lock out until corrective action is taken. NOTE: If the unit fails to operate due to compressor overcurrent condition, restart by manually resetting circuit breakers at the unit. Restart cannot be accomplished at the room thermostat. Emergency heat If compressor is inoperative due to a tripped safety device (high or low pressure, indoor coil freezestat, overcurrent, or overtemperature), the Cycle-LOC device locks out the compressor and lights a warning light on the room thermostat. When the switch is on (thermostat is set to the EM HT position), compressor circuit and outdoor thermostats are bypassed, and the second stage of thermostat energizes the indoor blower and the electric resistance heaters. 26
