There are several points to consider before choosing and installing a stove: Heat Output It is important to choose a stove with the correct heat output for the area in which it is to be installed as

3 Choosing the right stove... All of our stoves are of a high quality and would be expected to last for many years when used and cared for properly. Since a stove is likely to be a focal point in your home for such a length of time it is important to make an informed decision to ensure you choose the right one. There are several points to consider before choosing and installing a stove: Heat Output It is important to choose a stove with the correct heat output for the area in which it is to be installed as they burn at their cleanest and most efficient when they are burning well. Choosing a stove that is too small can lead to over firing which will damage firebox components whilst burning a large stove with the dampers constantly closed in an attempt to cut heat output will cause dirty and inefficient burning of the fuel. You can work out roughly what size stove you require using this rule of thumb. 3 Maximum Kilowatt Output Figure = Room Area m (Width x Depth x Height) / 10 This calculation will give you a rough maximum heating requirement figure in kilowatts which will assist in choosing a stove. Most stoves are rated towards the top end of their maximum output. The figure can be increased where rooms are poorly insulated, exposed or have adjoining staircases or open plan areas. Burning Technologies There are many different designs of stove, each with unique burning technologies employed within them. Most of the stoves currently on the market employ one or more of 4 main technologies. Standard design The simplest stoves will allow air into the combustion chamber through a single control on the stove. The amount of air let into the firebox will control the rate of burning. Secondary air & air wash When burning wood air needs to enter the firebox above the fuel bed to avoid over-cooling of the wood ash. This is commonly combined with an air wash system on stoves with a glass window which directs air down the glass in order to prevent excessive staining from the fuel. Pre-heated air wash A more effective method for keeping the stove glass clean is achieved by bringing air through ducts in the stove which pre-heats it before directing it down the glass window. The heated air discourages condensation on the glass. Tertiary air Tertiary burning systems inject air into the firebox around the top of the flame path in order to burn off the excess gasses rising from the fuel bed. This adds to the stoves Stovax Brunel 1A (3kW - 5kW) efficiency as well as creating an attractive flame pattern in the firebox. page 2

Cast iron? Steel? or Convector? Good quality cast iron is frequently used in stove manufacture as it is strong and easily molded to create attractive designs.

Steel bodied stoves do not distribute their heat in quite the same way as cast iron stoves but do tend to be more resistant to corrosion and cheaper to manufacture.

It also has an impressive capacity for retaining heat meaning excellent heat convection. Sheet steel is also a frequently used material. Steel bodied stoves do not distribute their heat in quite the same way as cast iron stoves but do tend to be more resistant to corrosion and cheaper to manufacture. Although steel won t hold heat in the same way cast iron will, steel stoves will heat up quicker. Convector stoves incorporate air channels in the outer skin of the stove. As the air in these channels is heated by the firebox, it rises, pulling cold air up from below. This results in an increased flow of air around the room heating larger and adjoining areas more effectively. The outer skin of the stove will also remain cooler than normal radiant stoves meaning convector stoves can often be placed slightly closer to combustible materials and furniture. Installation The proper installation of any stove is vitally important and will in most cases account for a large part of the overall budget. Flue pipes, linings and components need to be well manufactured using high quality materials in order to withstand years of high temperatures and acid erosion. For this reason they are all fairly expensive. We have carefully chosen what components we stock based on their cost and performance. All items are of a high quality but we can pass on discounts negotiated with our suppliers meaning we can sell at very competitive prices. In order to give the best possible price we offer free advice and detailed estimates for all our installations. Treating each installation separately assists us in foreseeing problems and providing accurate estimates. Aesthetics There are many different stove designs available in all sorts of different colours and finishes. As a focal point in any room it is of course important to choose a stove which you like the look of and which suits its surroundings. This pricelist includes pictures to give a good idea of what different designs of stove are available. The advantages of a stove as a space heater are obvious but it can also make good sense to utilise some of the heat for domestic hot water and / or radiators. Stovax Stockton 8 (8kW - 9kW) - Several boiler options available There are a lot of good stoves available with different boiler sizes meaning there is nearly always one to suit. Choosing a suitable stove If you are looking use you stove to heat some hot water there are many models which offer clip in boilers as optional extras. For central heating applications there are some excellent integral boiler stoves especially designed for the purpose. Below is some of our best advice for you to consider when choosing a boiler model stove: - Adding a boiler into a stove of course means some heat will be taken away to the water so it wont give as much heat out to the room as a dry stove of a similar size. So be sure to pick a stove with a suitable output to keep you warm during those winter months! - There are some important practical aspects to consider when connecting a stove to hot water systems. You will need a hot water cylinder if you don t already have one and it will need to be above the fire, within around 5 metres horizontally in order for the water to circulate freely. If you are currently on a combi boiler system there are ways of linking in. - If you already have a central heating system and want to use it in conjunction with a boiler stove you can do! Thermal store cylinders offer the best method of doing this although there are other devices available such as neutralizers. - Try and estimate as accurately as possible how much heat you will require from the boiler. most households will require between 8,000 and 10,000btu s for domestic hot water. Tip: This price list gives further details on the boilers available on certain models of stove. LOOK FOR THE BLUE WRITING! We have given a rough guide to the amount of radiators you can run from stoves with sufficient output. In our guide DHW stands for domestic hot water and the approximate number of radiators given is based on 600x1000 double radiators (5,900btu) unless otherwise stated. The radiator sizes you will need will of course depend on your house so be sure to measure up carefully! Solar water heating The addition of solar panels to a solid fuel heating system makes perfect sense! Harnessing the suns energy to give you hot water during the summer months will mean there s no need to use expensive electric immersions or your traditional gas or oil boiler. It is however very important that your stove is installed correctly to avoid fire risk and risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Because of the potential dangers involved it is currently against the law to install a new solid fuel appliance without having it signed off by a qualified HETAS engineer or the local County Council. We have a dedicated HETAS registered installation and servicing team operating in Pembrokeshire and the surrounding area. Our expert advice is free to anybody who needs it and we have a range of services available. Installation costs Below is a list of jobs we typically undertake. All installation prices are intended as a rough guide to the costs of an installation including all flue components, registration fees and VAT. We are proud of our work and absolutely will not compromise on the quality of materials or workmanship. We provide a completely free estimation service for all our customers to allow you to see exactly how much the necessary materials cost prior to installation. Stove installation in to an existing suitable flue: approx Connecting a stove to an existing or newly installed flue will typically require flue pipe and various adaptors to ensure an air tight connection. We will have to confirm the flue s suitability and installation costs will vary depending on what components are required. Stove installation with stainless steel flue lining: approx Older stone or brick flues will typically require lining for use with a stove to avoid fume escape into the property. The simplest method of lining a flue is to use a stainless steel flexible flue lining. All our linings and fittings are tried and tested and of an extremely high quality. Installation using 316g flue lining (10-20 years lifespan): approx Installation using 904g flue lining (15-30 years lifespan): approx Flue liner insulation: 300 approx Insulation a flue liner will increase performance when you are lighting your fire and increase rigidity meaning less movement during sweeping which can increase life expectancy. Twin walled flue systems: 1,000-2,000 approx No chimney? No problem! Twin walled flue systems can run up through a house or out and up an external wall allowing you to have a stove installed where there is no existing flue. Our twin walled flue system is one of the highest quality and neatest systems currently available on the UK market. Prices will vary drastically depending on what components are required.
