2 Introduction Do you know what type of waste your business is producing? This guide will help you find a description and EWC code for your waste materials. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list of waste materials, but the most common waste streams produced by our customers. 3 General Waste Recyclable/non-recyclable waste should be separate to improve recycling/recovery value Household Waste Plastics, wrappers, containers, textiles minimum food waste. Furniture Packaging Chairs, tables, chest of drawers, bed frames (if these are wood/metal) no electrical items as WEEE waste must be segregated (see: Hazardous Waste, page 9). Food wrappers and containers with food residue. Empty boxes, bubble wrap, sorted cardboard, clingfilm, hard plastics, polystyrene. No hazardous waste / packaging that previously contained hazardous substances. Non-Recyclable Waste Ceiling tiles, roof felt, vinyl, rubber, AstroTurf, insulation, foam, fibre glass, carpet, carpet tiles, laminated/shatterproof glass and polystyrene. Bulky items such as mattresses and sofas. 3 QM_0662_CM_V

4 Recyclates Waste types must be segregated or this will be classed as General Waste Cardboard Clean, dry cardboard with no contamination, food residue, or rubble dust. Mixed Paper & Cardboard Clean, dry paper, mixed paper, or paper and cardboard. No contamination, hazardous waste, or residues. Please note that cardboard generally has more value if collected separately. Clean rigid plastics such as bread/cake trays, drink crates, clean and Mixed Rigid Plastics empty 5/25 litre containers (no haz labels), wheelie bins (all metal castors removed), and HDPE No films, polystyrene, strapping, food trays or PVC. HDPE Bottles Clean HDPE natural bottles. Must be empty and washed out. No contamination, hazardous waste or residues. Mixed Bottles Clean HDPE natural bottles and PET drinks bottles. Must be empty and washed. No contamination, hazardous waste or residues. 4 QM_0662_CM_V

5 Recyclates Waste types must be segregated or this will be classed as General Waste Mixed Cans & Bottles Clean, metal cans and plastic bottles only. Must be empty and no contamination with any other waste materials. Mixed Cans Clean steel and/or aluminium cans. Containers must be empty and washed out. Clean, empty glass (no liquids) small amounts of contamination are Glass accepted. Metal or plastic collars on bottles or jars and labels on bottles or jars are accepted. Mixed Card & Film Clean, dry paper, cardboard and large sortable pieces of LDPE film. Dry Mixed Recyclates (DMR) Plastic bottles and cups, cans and milk bottles. Clean, dry paper and cardboard. Clingfilm and shrink wrap. No food residues/liquids or contamination. Clean, dry polythene film clear and coloured. Grade 98/2 only all LDPE Film other grades of film are based on market conditions and may be classed as general waste. Speak to us for advice. 5 QM_0662_CM_V

6 Construction Waste Waste types must be segregated or it will be classed as either non-recyclable construction or mixed construction Mixed Construction Can include bricks, concrete, soil, ceramic tiles, glass (nonlaminated/shatterproof), PVC windows and frames, sheet glass, metal, wood, green waste (no roots or trunks over 20 inches in diameter), clean cardboard, rigid plastics. Hardcore Bricks, concrete, ceramic tiles. Plasterboard Must be clean and on its own in a separate container, with no contamination or hazardous waste. Not foil backed. Green Waste No soil and no roots or trunks over 20 inches in diameter as these are required to be segregated. 6 QM_0662_CM_V

7 Construction Waste Waste types must be segregated or it will be classed as either non-recyclable construction or mixed construction Wood (Grades A-C) No sawdust, contamination with other waste materials or hazardous waste. Metal Segregated from other waste materials, with no contamination or hazardous waste. Non-Recyclable Construction Waste Ceiling tiles, roof felt, vinyl, rubber, AstroTurf, insulation, foam, fibre glass, carpet, carpet tiles, laminated/shatterproof glass and polystyrene. Inert Soils, stone and sand. Tarmac over 6 month old. Bricks, concrete and ceramic tiles. 7 QM_0662_CM_V

8 Hazardous Waste All hazardous waste materials must be segregated into separate, clearly labelled containers and hold a current Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Hazardous Waste is subject to an EA Consignment Note Fee Paint Tins * Solvent based paint tins Mastic Tubes * Aerosols * Expanding and non-expanding aerosols Thinners & Solvents (Packaging) * Waste Oil * Filter materials, absorbents, wiping cloths, contaminated protective clothing, oily rags. Fire Extinguishers * Waste Electrical Equipment * Electrical equipment containing dangerous substances e.g. TVs, computer screens, cables with plugs, domestic appliances and components removed from discarded equipment. 8 QM_0662_CM_V

9 Hazardous Waste All hazardous waste materials must be segregated into separate, clearly labelled containers and hold a current Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Hazardous Waste is subject to an EA Consignment Note Fee Alkaline Batteries * Lead Batteries * Liquid Paint & Adhesive Contaminated Spills Materials * Paints, inks, adhesives and resins containing dangerous substances * For example spill mats and granules Tyres * Fridges * Liquid Solvents * Asbestos * Bonded asbestos only, segregated from other waste materials. 10 Food Waste The below waste types can go into the same waste container Leftover Food Plate scrapings, unwanted food no liquids Tea Bags & Coffee Grounds Tea bags and naked coffee grounds only no packaging Meat & Fish Cooked or uncooked meat and fish Dairy Products Dairy products, no liquids Fruits & Vegetables Can include peelings & offcuts no liquids General Food Waste Can include eggs, bread, cakes, pasta and rice no liquids 10 QM_0662_CM_V
